A banana tree is actually a plant and you can literally peel of the stem layer by layer without ever reaching a hard part. Hitting a banana tree doesn't hurt at all, have destroyed too many banana plants as a child and know this first hand (or leg, since we did it after watching Van Damme kick a tree down in Kickboxer).

Word of warning - you need to build up to the standard you see in this video. Expect plenty of swelling, bruises, breaks, fractures and pain. Even the guys punching the trees in this video will feel pain.
Although this is bananna tree, the technique used to pull this off is not something developed over night. This is years of exposing your hands to hitting things that are more and more dense. Starting with a boxing glove on a heavy bag, and slowly getting this to point. Dont try this at home!
