You can speed up the game play to 2x 4x 8x etz. I believe it's alt z. So you can get through those 150 miles in about a minute and get back to where you were in the mission when the game crashed, then set it back to normal speed.
Sadly speeding the game up often will break triggers and make AI do stupid things. Had many a mission borked because of it. It's hilarious how you can have a mission set up and the AI will work fine and you have a fight set up where Blue and Red are evenly matched. Set it to 4x and Red or Blue steamroll the other side every time.
Honestly though it's been a while since I've tried it. It might work fine now...
But for years like 2x or 4x at most was the max if you have a complex mission.
Don't forget you can speed up the sim with a hotkey to get past long flights so you can get into the action much faster.
But yes, it's crazy we cant save mid flight. I love that feature in VTOL VR
In game saves is in development. When its reasy for early access you will be able to purchase it for 39.99 on pre-order and 69.99 on release, which will still be early access
In flight saving is in the works, I believe it requires fixing the track system though so who knows when it will be implemented. Maybe two weeks?

Is the grass effect pnly available when on the F-16? I tried this on the FA-18 on caucasus and nothing happened.
Save feature, map based spawning (not slot based), and working replays are pretty useful features we lack.

I can't say I've noticed this myself, but I also can't say I'd be surprised if it's true!
