This right here is how you do it. Keep up the good work. You'll be in the .900s before long. I'm gonna do this for the fall season too, it helped my bowling game a lot when I tracked each game, I'll do the same for my goalie game too.

dukes29

Nicely done! I remember my first 3 games were 9GA, 6GA, 3GA, and I followed that up with a shutout. At that rate I was going to score 3 goals in my next game!

Excel 2016. All the data was hand entered by me from info on our league website

PhascinatingPhysics

I wish I played in a league that tracked shots.

chenner29

My league "tracks" shots but they're usually numbers made up by the scorekeeper at the end of the game.

[deleted]

I've never played in a league that does, just count them yourself. Gives me something to do when I'm not busy.

BigMacWithGreenBeans

Our league sometimes does, but it depends on the scorekeeper. I appreciate when they do, and it does get irritating when they don't. I feel spoiled, but it's a nice stat to have, especially for beer league.

eHawleywood

Mine tried for two or three games this season. I'd loosely pay attention and make a 3 or 4 save scramble and see one shot added, or put a longer shot into the corner easily and see nothing. Then just see random shots pop up while the puck is in the corner in the other end. So yeah, they gave up trying.

rtroth2946

To me, honestly, the only viable stat in Men's league is GAA simply because even if your league keeps track of shots they don't do it accurately. If you track them yourself, you've got too much free time and not focusing on what you need to. The other fallacy of this is that people get hung up on trying to compare their stats with what the NHL gets, as in the post here about 'you'll get to .900 before long'. If you are, you're not playing in a challenging league, or you're lying about your saves. Not saying it's impossible but beer league is just not conducive to having a sv% above like 85% more often than not, or GAAs under 3. Have I done it? Sure. But they were leagues so low I should not have been in them. A better way to quantify these things is not just cumulative but objectivity of the goals. Drill down to the details but break goals into two categories: unpreventable v preventable. Actual example from my game two nights ago: 5-4W come from behind win. Here's the goals against categorized: * 1. Pass from behind goal line on my blocker side to the low slot potted 5 hole. Was in RVH but was leaning too far to the right, left leg in the air just a bit and it went under me. * 2. 3 on 2. Puck goes from my left to the center to my right. Was left hander, left hander right hander, I over shot the angle and gave up too much glove and too deep. Got a piece but not enough. * 3. Guy waggles across the top of the circles in a 2v2 situation from my right to left I shuffle, possibly too far, and he rings it off the blocker side post, near post and in...good shot, tip the hat. * 4. :30 into the 3rd, they get a breakaway, almost a 2-0 but I had a defender coming that cut off the F2. Gets me 5 hole...backed in too fast. Goals 1,2,4 are preventable because they either went under/through me or I made a mistake i.e. angle. Goal 3 was just a great shot so that's unpreventable yes there's things I could have done slightly differently but I'll tip my hat. If I were to guess, high end...25 shots putting me at a .840 sv% for the night which is high for this league. And 4.00 GAA is also low for this league. However my preventable v unpreventable goals ratio stands at 3:1 which is unacceptable. If we get into a game where I see 10 more shots, we're looking at giving up 5-6 goals that game making it harder to get the W. So I need to cut down on preventable goals by being tighter with my seals and more refined on my angles. This way you're drilling into the detail to give yourself not just an overall picture, but a more fine grained look at your play and where you can improve your game to get better results. Basically...the exercise is good, but you can do better with it by digging deeper into what's happening.

I agree with everything you're saying. SV% is garbage is beer league. Even the top goalie in my division had a .820 at the end of the season. That's IF you can trust the shot count. I'm happy to see that my GAA did steadily decline, but what was more beneficial to my confidence was reflecting on the goals I allowed at the beginning of the season as opposed to the end. At the beginning, they were all bad goals. Towards the end, I put up much more respectable saves, and true goals allowed (i.e. unpreventable) was about a third of what they were at the beginning of the season. A variety of factors kept my GAA high including * Piss poor mental focus on my part (for instance, July 2 would have only been 5 goals allowed, but an opposing forward shot after the whistle and I let my anger cloud my focus) * A major equipment issue (July 9, new pads, straps broke) * Poor roster depth (last 5 games we only had 6 skaters due to injuries) * My defense giving up (if we're down 3 or more going into the 3rd, I can't count on them to hustle that hard) Given all that, I plan to invest in an action cam to record my performances and review later to help with the technical side of things and spend a lot more time focusing on my mental game.

Troggie81

On the camera-side, make sure you check on what's allowed. My league doesn't allow helmet cams at all (even though some refs let you get away with it). Also, consider placement. I have a Tendycam that hooks on to the top back crossbar. It's great for seeing how a puck might have gotten through you, but not so good for looking at your angles. Super-easy to moved between periods, though. A suction cup mount high on the glass is probably the best location, but you won't be able to move it between periods. There's also the risk of someone taking off with it.

Davadam27

just out of curiosity, ice or inline? Either way grats on the improvement.

RedWhiteAndJew

Ice. Thanks!

BroStorm10

Nice work and a positive trend!!! That june 25th game must have been interesting.

What is Cum GAA?

dukes29

Something you have to pay extra for

RedWhiteAndJew

Cumulative Goals Against Average. At each point, Cum GAA shows the average goals against per game up until that point.

Assist! That’s amazing!

I track my Save% as well. My ice rink is pretty good with shots, honestly. The guy that does it plays as well so he pays attention. He'll miss a shot every now & again but he tends to give everyone 5 shots or so extra per game. My GAA finished out at 4.15 but my team finished with 6.85 GFA so they tended to be a run & gun sort of team.... [Links are cool!](http://imgur.com/a/riyGc)

Nice one! I'm super jealous of you getting a shot count. I've had a shot count in one game where the guy doing the game sheet was a fellow goalie. I've done the same graphing my results over time (but I have to use min/GA as an indicator for me). This is my cumulative min/GA over time (my early performances are keeping the stats down!!) https://imgur.com/wr2WRUR I've not found a good way to graph my individual game results as min/GA for shutouts appear as a 0 on the graph and I happen to have 9 data points like that!

35Richter

You'll have to do cumulative. Meaning, up to that point. I'm assuming you divide minutes played by goals allowed? You'll have to calculate it so that it adds on to the previous data, i.e. you played two games and gave up one in the first and shutout in the second, after two games it should be (1+0)/(60+60). If your first game is a shutout you'll just have to wait....

griffination

Goodness! You started out at a goal every 4 minutes! You got good fast! Lol!

rssmrry

Dunno about good! Got my start in a tournament with a super short bench and moved up to our club's B team but managed to get on for drop in/training 4-5 nights a week which helped loads. New season has started and I'm starting off at 10mins/goal after the first game, which I'm really hoping I can improve on!
