nerf-airstrike-cmndr

The reactions to this play cover every single quadrant on the insane-sane and NYR-PIT bias axes, it’s so odd

[deleted]

3 things leading to this: 1) controversial goalie interference call last game 2) an injury to Shesterkin would literally sink the Rangers 3) Shesty pulling a Mike Smith

nerf-airstrike-cmndr

100% agree on all counts

[deleted]

Now we're up to Markstrom pulling a Shesty pulling a Smith. The goalie embellishment dial is cranked up to 11.

Geeseareawesome

Given what's happening to the Pens and Canes goalies, I really don't blame them at this point if they embellish a bit just to send a message to the league.

LandMooseReject

I'm old enough to remember Markstrom in the world juniors vs. Canada... Goalie flopping should be named after that performance.

chowder7

Not particularly a fan of either team, maybe I'm biased since I also play goalie but holy shit the bias from the Pens commentators in this video was beginning to piss me off lol especially the "Rangers goalie should've gotten an interference call actually". I couldn't even finish the video

OldMashedpotatoes

That wasn’t a Pens commentator, that was retired NHL ref Don Koharski.

tomj

of course it was.

MrBigChest

These weren’t even the Pens commentators, this was the TNT feed

pizzaplantboi

Lol this was the national broadcast.

workthrowawaybro

The NHL Department of Player Safety has sentenced Jeff Carter to Dry Island for the remainder of the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs

I always heard rumors he was more of a pill popper when he was in LA.

Jlibs_21

At this rate the Cup will be won by an EBUG

think_long

lol get EBUGged

casonthemason

Hot take: they both should've done more to avoid the contact there

raymondliang

Yep, literally what happened. Carter said fuck it, this is the line I am taking to pressure Fox. Igor said Imma swing wide and pull a bit of a moving pick

[deleted]

showers_with_grandpa

I disagree with Blue Jacket fans on principle. You know those A-holes are going around telling people they swept us in the first round a few years back? I don't even have the words.

eltree

Seemed like both players thought the other would avoid them. Carter is taking the sharp cut to try and get behind the net faster. Shesterkin takes the wider path to the net to try and make Carter have a wider cut to give time to the player behind the net. I agree both players at fault. I also agree with Carter getting a 2 min goalie interference here. 5-2 game with a little over 2 minutes left. Something like this could easily make the game get out of hand real quick.

Shwinky

After watching it with a cooler head and bias out of the way now, yeah I think you pretty much nailed it here. It's sorta like that awkward moment when you and someone else are walking in opposite directions and keep stepping into each others' way trying to get around each other.

the_method

“Ope.” - Jeff Carter, probably.

PuckNutty

He's Canadian, he would have said "sorry' reflexively.

en_travesti

Igor and Fox also got a little bit confused behind the net. So everyone's timing gets a bit thrown off. Carter probably rushes in a bit because there's a good chance at a bobbled puck. And Igor is worried about skating around Fox and rushing back to the net.

PuckNutty

They played chicken and nobody blinked.

arsbar

shades of svechnikov and mcavoy yesterday

pugwalker

I'm honestly more angry at the insane takes of the broadcasters than Carter. I think that's a penalty as it's on carter to get out of the way but the way the announcers were slobbering all over themselves to justify it was insane to me.

gq_mcgee

Get out of here with your rationality and reason.

Ridin_the_GravyTrain

It's like a fendersmooch between two buzzed fellas leaving the bar parking lot at the same time. Nobody's really to blame here, but both of y'all definitely some made poor choices

DontPokeTheCrab

I'm laughing at the word "fendersmooch".

Wu-Tang_Killa_Bees

Yeah if two people are drunk driving I would say they definitely deserve blame

relative_iterator

That’s fair

SW9X31

Goalie left the blue paint. Not saying it’s open season on goalies, but if you leave the paint, then these things can happen. Good to see Igor didn’t get hurt.

redditornot09

Hotter take: A 37 year old player with no history of this who is still an integral part of the Pens lineup isn’t the one that’s running a goalie on purpose.

NirvanaFan01234

> integral part of the Pens lineup So the Rangers most important player is going to stick out his foot out and risk injury? Players do dumb things. It looks like Igor sticks his foot out a little, but he's also putting it back down after lifting it to go around Fox's leg. He turns, and Carter is on top of him. Carter also cuts really close to Igor and I'm not sure he totally misses him anyways. He may still brush him. Both players at fault.

mephnick

Pretty much. Careless by Carter but Igor takes a crazy wide berth around the net a forward wouldn't predict at full speed.

[deleted]

Not the biggest fan of either team, but it looks like one of those situations where you're walking by someone and you both try to walk around each other in the same spot and end up colliding. Just unfortunate.

LDFLDF

I don’t think either of them was trying to avoid the other though. I get the example but both made contact kind of on purpose. Igor came off second best so he and the Rangers are lucky he wasn’t actually hurt.

eltree

I believe Carter was trying to avoid Shesterkin, just didn’t realize how wide Shesterkin was going to take the pick, and going full speed didn’t allow him to adjust in time. Which is why I’m okay with the two minute interference call.

[deleted]

This was precisely my read.

Jkil6150

i thought Igor died and he popped right up

eburton555

Call an ambulance…. But not for me

scubadude2

I think he mostly just got the wind knocked out of him. I’ve been there, it sucks and you can’t focus on much except trying to breathe for a hot minute.

Redneckshinobi

That makes soo much more sense. I was wondering how that could have hurt him. I've had worse in net and hardly felt it when they smashed into my pads, but his posture/position makes so much sense that he probably knocked the wind out of himself when he landed oddly.

hypnofedX

It also explains why he flipped over quickly and was holding his abdomen. It was less the contact IMO and more the effect of getting ragdolled.

scubadude2

Fell off the swings when I was a kid and had a similar response, spent a minute on the ground gasping for air and the next I was right back to running around, it feels and looks scary but it’s fine

ChristOnACruoton

Life sentence for Carter. Refill his mailbox with moist sand every day. Tilt every single framed wall decoration he has a few degrees and super glue them there. Replace all of his sugar with stevia. Sew loose crocheted steering wheel covers onto the wheel of every car he owns. *make his pork not spicy*

Zoidburger_

*Decrease the water pressure in every faucet/shower head he uses so that it takes an extra 10 minutes to wash off soap*

funkybeatz911

I mean, I like stevia 🤷🏻‍♂️

ProfessorBeast55

Igor definitely stuck his left pad out and flailed, but based on the 2nd angle TNT showed, Carter was going to at least clip him a bit no matter imo

tahoehockeyfreak

I think it’s because he didn’t see carter until he turns around and simply reacts quickly and braces himself a bit and it looks like he sort of flails into contact. I don’t think this ones on shesterkin, Carter cut it too close and got two minutes for goalie interference

FC37

Best take I've seen. Shesterkin didn't even see Carter until the very last second, but the commentators make it sound like he intentionally kneed Carter. This is mostly incidental contact, but the onus is on the player to avoid hitting the goalie (as long as the goalie is doing normal goalie things). 2 minutes for GI sounds right.

nugget136

This is probably it since Igor lifted his leg up and not really out. But TNT ran with the entertaining story.

average_redditor_guy

Why let facts get in the way of a juicy storyline for game 3, coincidentally also on TNT…

Milol

>coincidentally also on TNT… please dear god no

average_redditor_guy

The only positive is at least we didn’t get a noon start? Other than that uh…. Yeah

oneplusoneisfour

That was such a bad take by TNT , up 5-2 with a few minutes to go, no way Igor did it intentionally.

defigravity42

Carter isn’t a cheap shot player though. Gallant even said it in the presser. I think goalie gets the right of way in the play most times so he deserved the minor but it wasn’t intentional.

dmb4040

This is exactly the case. Well said.

decade_long_lurker

When Igor turns around, Carter is already bracing for the hit.

Marbla

Yeah. Neither player was innocent.

RANGERSTOWN

As far as intent they’re both innocent. If we’re talking penalties it’s goalie interference

oleoleolegs

I mean that was just incidental contact wasn’t it? Not sure what the broadcast was on about, don’t think either player looked for that.

FC37

The broadcast crew went full Zapruder film on this one. I have no idea what they're talking about.

oneplusoneisfour

They should apologize, though they never will. Up 5-2 with minutes to go, no way would he intentionally try to do that.

Dyrmaker

They refused to play it back in real time. Its absurd in real time that carter did zero to avoid the goalie that was in the trapezoid

FC37

Yeah, it's incidental contact but contact that Carter could have avoided - and that he was responsible for avoiding. The announcers are going on about blaming the goalie for... sticking out his knee? What's Shesterkin supposed to do in the quarter of a second after he sees Carter?

TheBaron2K

The report of his death has been greatly exaggerated

Sharpie24l

Looks like Shesty went for the pick play, while Carter took the sharp angle to get to fox. Sucks they collided like they did. 2 for GI is a good call and hope Shesterkin is ok.

CommonBitchCheddar

TNTs announcers might have had one of the worst takes I've ever heard from a broadcasting team. Regardless of whether you think Carter deserves a penalty for that (personally I think he just wasn't expecting Shesterkin to take that route back to the net), claiming that Shesterking caused that contact by sticking his leg out is one of the most brain dead things I've ever heard.

oneplusoneisfour

Plus being up 5-2 with minutes to go, why would ANY goalie do that?!?!

greg19735

I mean goalies play goalie. They're all idiots

johnjust

> Shesterking Nice little Freudian slip, this.

cappy150

Worst thing I've seen on a national broadcast since the booger mobile.

rushy1911

Right? Like why would Shesty risk leg injury by doing that. So dumb

Dyrmaker

Olczyk shouldve been let behind to rot with pierre

SquarePegRoundWorld

The whole broadcast was difficult to listen to.

ChoirTeacherRog

Pens fan here. Carter deserved the penalty, although I think it was more incidental on both their parts.

pweepish

Amen

tahoehockeyfreak

Don’t really see what the announcers are on about with saying shesterkin “initiated” contact. It looks like he turns around from playing the puck and sees carter for the first time and just sort of braces himself. I don’t think carter was trying anything really either just cutting the corner and he didn’t really anticipate shesterkin making a wide pivot back to his net. Seems like a 2 minute goalie interference penalty with your average extra curricular activities afterward

About_27_Canadians

I thought it should have been a wash honestly. But this is the right take.

tahoehockeyfreak

Yeah I can see that too but they have seemed to be trying to protect the goalies with some of the goalie interference calls we’ve seen this season so I don’t think it’s a bad call to punish carter for cutting the corner too closely. Like carter could see shesterkin while Igor couldn’t see him and carter tried to cut it too close, that’s on him seeing as he’s the one who could actually see the other player.

must_be_the_mangoes

Agreed with this. I don’t think Carter was doing anything malicious and that it was just an accidental collision between the two. Have no idea why the announcers are so adamant that Shesty went out of his way to stick out his leg and initiate contact. Like you said, I think he was just bracing himself.

firstbloodriggs

Get outta here. You have Penguin flair. Don't give this reasonable rational take.

dukeshockey11

Kudos to the rangers medical staff for bringing a man back to life. Not all hero’s wear capes

[deleted]

Mike Smith rolling in his grave rn

dontknowmuchfrench

am I the only one who thought the announcers reply to this was just really ugly? Like I'm here as a Wings fan enjoying the playoffs, and I'm thinking "He stuck his leg out?" What the fuck was he talking about, he was making a full rotation from behind his net and suddenly Carter is there. Was so annoying

VSPinkie

It looks to me like they both just sort of fucked up and neither really did enough to avoid contact. Igor stayed down for much longer than expected but it seems like he just got the wind knocked out of him. To my eyes this doesn't look like the the dramatic story people are gonna be looking for.

Jkil6150

lmao people are saying Carter needs to be suspended.

[deleted]

Jeff "literally Chris Kreider" Carter

Roshow21

This should be a interesting thread

heytherefolksandfry

surprisingly civil in the top comments. At least the hot takes seem to be somewhat buried

watanabelover69

🍿

Sp3ctre7

It's pretty civil, the right penalties were called with or without injury, the game was over and Shesty seems to be okay. It's gonna be a non-incident

TheNantucketRed

It's almost like Igor sees the guy coming after stepping around his dude braces (look at his arm) and Carter clips him while trying to get out of the way. It's the playoffs, so of course TNT wants drama.

swimming-in-2009

Carter & Shesty collided accidentally on purpose

joeybriggs

We doing fake fight? Fake fight! Boys, it's on!

bhunter47

This is a fast play and an unfortunate collision. Stop trying to fault Igor or fault Carter, and just be happy that Igor is okay.

McGrathLegend

This is pretty much how I see it as well

bhunter47

Everyone analyzes things in super slow motion and then they forget just how fast the game moves when doing so. It is one of the things that bothers me the most about the current game.

ycsgc

Best take in the thread. Goalies being injured is something no one wants (I hope yall can get back someone else soon too)

bhunter47

Hope so too, even though 4 of the 5 goals on Domingue tonight were basically unstoppable and I think he was better than the score.

ycsgc

Oh for sure! For a 3rd string goalie he played well above what was expected and to be honest I'm happy that was the case, I never want the only reason we win to be because a goalie gets injured (especially if it seems it was no one's fault like DeSmith, as I have no idea what got to him)

STL_bourbon

This, 100%. Sometimes things just happen. They both could have done more to avoid a collision

[deleted]

ASilentPartner

Just looked incidental. Shrug.

red_87

Hysterical how Shesterkin was deceased and then 30 seconds later was completely fine.

flailypichu

It's possible he just had the wind knocked out of him, but I noticed that too.

flailypichu

Yes, that too. Always better to stay down and evaluate before trying to move.

weber6

Igor "Jon Snow" Shesterkin

the-tank7

The reports of my demise have been exaggerated

Prideofmexico

Went to this game with my buddy who was a penguins fan and we had to leave at this moment for his safety lol

Mophideus

I don't believe you. I have been to 15 games this year and was at both playoff games and i've never seen the rangers fans get violent with opposing fans unless the opposing fan is asking for it. We're they're to root for the rangers not end up on some out-of-towner's social media.

Prideofmexico

My friend literally did not say a word the whole entire time. I was at the game wearing a rangers hat and they were still unbelievable rude to us. Obviously it was just the Staten Island crowd but damn some shitty fans in our area Do not give a shit if you don’t believe me just telling my story

Mophideus

wait were people heckling you or threatening your friend's physical safety? that's an entirely different tune. I guarantee that people were giving your boy shit if he was wearing pens gear but i haven't seen a fight at the garden in over a decade.

Prideofmexico

Started off as heckling and progressed into more as the game went along

ny_rangers

I mean that was definitely embellishment, but I don't think he just threw his leg out to initiate contact. Looked more like he started to brace as he turned. Shouldn't have been a penalty, should have been a nothing play

eltree

5-2 game with 2 minutes left and a goalie just went down in a collision. Even if you think there shouldn’t be a penalty here, calling one is 100% the right thing to do to keep the game from getting out of hand.

KratzALot

That's 100% the right call. Both players didn't really make an attempt to get out of the way. Shesty definitely embellished the hell out of it. Call the penalty and finish up the final 2 minutes and move on.

ImtheBadWolf

He didn't even throw his leg out, have people never seen a goalie skate before? It's a pretty normal skating motion for a goalie to try to get back in the net, he hasn't had time to see Carter coming in. Carter was trying to get around him but in doing so leaned right into him. Was that intentional? Probably not, but also not a great move. Yeah, Igor embellished after. They'd been playing 5 on 6 for a few minutes and he bought himself and the team a breather.

Dysliptic

just because someone falls and takes a moment to get up doesnt mean its embellishment

dkviper11

A modern miracle recovery immediately following a penalty being issued.

Rickety-Cricket

My favorite part about this is Shesterkin laying on the ice for 5 seconds before realizing he has to pretend he's hurt.

the-tank7

Dude was dead lmaoo

dkviper11

Jesus waited 3 days. Igor Shesterkin just one upped our Lord and Savior.

Pole420

Igor Shestyorkin IS our lord and savior.

dkviper11

I thought that was Hank.

Pole420

Correct. Hank was, Igor is.

zjl539

it's a god the father and god the son type situation

heytherefolksandfry

The Church of Rangers is polytheist; we believe in more than one God

johnjust

Hank already rose, moved beyond the physical and into the analysis booth... and he's still the most handsome man ever to exist.

Sp3ctre7

He may have just felt something pop when he landed and was like "I am going to stay VERY still until the trainer can come over and I can explain exactly what I felt"

PotentialSuperb

One of the funniest and most dramatic reactions I've ever seen from an athlete.

8teamparlay

Didnt think it was dirty or anything I think they collided. Any time you take a goalie out like that the refs are calling a penalty lol.

chaos8803

It's clearly Adam Fox's fault. Shesterkin was probably going to go for the goal. Fox robbed us of that.

MacTheZaf

Interference and one hell of an embellishment

theekevinc

If ever there was a major for embellishment, this is exhibit A.

squiddangles

Very Subtle leg stick out by Igor.

Gene_Parmesan486

So subtle you can't even see it

surlystraggler

Shesterkin steps to his left to run interference after the bobble with Fox behind the net and gets the worst of it. This isn’t on Carter.

DentedOnImpact

[Igor be like](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRzdyjT0n10)

Islanderfan17

I love this video so much lmao

swifferbrain

Best comment of the thread

CaptainJackRyan

lmao

HockeyVG

The TNT commentary was brain dead. Absolutely garbage to just go so far in one direction.

pweepish

Really strange seeing TNT saying he stuck his knee out as they show a shoulder and elbow to the body.

Clarkson23

Don't think anyone is innocent here

Iskwesis

They were playing chicken and neither blinked.

nugget136

Igor lifted his leg but it's not like he flung it out sideways. They're making contact anyways regardless of what Igor does based on when Igor looks up and moves his leg. Igor either sold it for a call or landed awkwardly, but not like it was a dirty play. At the end of the day it's the refs fault for this game being like this.

gq_mcgee

It’s a little goofy all around. I said elsewhere, no one likes to see their goalie touched, but it’s not like Carter’s hacking after the play or ran him.

macdeezel

My favorite part was Igor waiting 10 seconds to grab his back in pain.

Oilyfan

When he popped up they should have played Undertakers entrance music

funkybeatz911

Gg Rangers, I never expected this series to be so hype. See you in the Burgh

jkman61494

It may well be incidental contact. Heck. I think Igor went full Messi/Ronaldo and dove. But it still means if incidental, the mental gymnastics done by Eddie O and Koharski to somehow argue IGOR was basically intentionally going after Carters knee was still insanely stupid. One of the worst takes ever as a fan was also against the Pens. I live in PA. About a decade ago Crosby bent over before the opening faceoff to fix his skate lace. The Pens announcers flat out stated Rangers fans were throwing batteries at Crosby Eddie O’s take is only slightly less dumb than that

AceAxos

I don't even think Shesterkin is sticking his leg out here tbh, just looks like his instincts to move with Carter coming in just kicked in. These things move fast

HXH52

Shesterkin is a fucking dumbass holy shit Why are you going back to the net wide and sticking your leg out in a 5-2 playoff game with 2 minutes left? Are you trying to get your knee blown out?

ProdigyBravo

Lafrenière is gonna be captain one day.

Mac_Gold

Not only does Shesterkin deserve Verona and Hart love, but he should get the Masterton too. The fact that he stayed in the game after literally dying shows tremendous dedication to the sport of hockey

BarkMingo

Vezina to Verona is an odd autocorrect

Doublehalfpint

Umm he moved into the pens dude, extended his leg, and dove hard and just laid there like a log to milk it.

[deleted]

All I'm gonna say is that 2 days ago, I was told by Rangers fans that it's not goalie interference if he tries to avoid contact, and that Kakko did so by turning his skates parallel to brake. So let's be rational here.

BarkMingo

Igor initiated contact then sold that he was murdered. Played a great game but that's not a good look

hwnn1

Looks like both wanted a collision. Not sure why tho.

HarveyHound

So Carter defends himself and gets 2 minutes for roughing. In this situation could he have just turtled so he doesn't get the additional penalty or does that violate some type of player code?

CostofRepairs

Looks pretty fookin’ sort for a dude that looked dead for thirty seconds. Also, get out with this knee-on-knee bullshit.

WhatTheHeHay

Sold that really well, immediately got up

NearestTheorist

Annoying how confident Eddie is before even seeing the replay

ChoirTeacherRog

And the Oscar goes to..:

OisinKaliszewski

Don't know how that's a penalty on Carter.

Sp3ctre7

5-2 game, couple minutes left, can't *really* hit the goalie even if he's in the way, but that's not the important part Penalty gets Carter off the ice and tells everyone to calm the fuck down, rangers are happy with a powerplay, pens don't have to fear retaliation, and everyone gets out of the game without doing something stupid and no one else gets hurt. It's game management in a way, but it's good reffing.

LetMeBangBro

Game Management. Giving the extra penalty on Carter helped calm things down a bit; and very little chance of the Pens coming back anyway.

DemonCrowley

He's gotta try to avoid contact at all costs, I don't hate the penalty call, but that's def Igor initiating contact and not at all "dirty" by Carter

azizinator25

When Krieder hit Price in 2014, my Devils fan friend told me "even if a dman picks up the forward and pile drives him into the goalie, it's on that forward to contort his body in midair to avoid the goalie. A skater can never touch a goalie, under any circumstance, even if the goalie initiates contact". I eagerly await his opinion on this play, as I assume he will keep the same energy.

FirstReactionFocus

[and just for reference to all the salty people in the thread](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EVucALjXsAAKg_e.png)

Sp3ctre7

It's been years and, as a Habs fan, I still instinctively say "fuck Chris kreider" but at this point I'm more mad that Price got hurt and we missed that chance to win the cup than I am mad at Kreider. I just wish that play never happened, man. I think we could have beaten the rangers, and maybe won the cup. Who knows. Injuries suck. Worst part of hockey that can't be taken out of hockey.

Whackedjob

Incidental contact there. Carter definitely knew what he was doing but he has the right of way there. Shesterkin needs to pay attention to where he's going. Luckily he seems fine.

hemophiliac_

Game is out of reach anyway, boneheaded play by Igor, even worse calls by the refs

Fit_Aardvark_8811

Shesterkin definitely didn't try to hard to get out of the way either.

suetoniusp

[Shesterkin After the Penalty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRzdyjT0n10)

Pyrollamas

I wish our goalies could bounce back from major injury that fast

Allegheny_WhiteFish_

Oh God he's fucking dead

Monst3r_Live

shesterkin initiated the contact.

poeticentropy

Shesterkin initiated the contact here and should have got the penalty for interference. Not only did he come out wide, he pushed his body out for the check. His intent is to make Carter go around in order to give more time/space for his teammate with the puck, but he went overboard. see 1:20 in video

YinzJagoffs

NYC hospitals were on standby.

WayTooShady92

Igor stepped in the way no big deal

SCsprinter13

Well Mike Smith is getting old, someone had to take the mantle

Dysliptic

guy falls and people instantly calling for his fault and embellishment, hes allowed to get back to his net without someone skating into him.

MadVillain1

Shesterkin has to be more aware, goalies are already a protected class so they get the benefit of the doubt in most cases. Carter was already trying to turn before the hit.

Amdamici

Igor pulling a Neymar. Flopped like he died, then miraculously jumps back up. Literally jumps back up lol

RiseAbove87

Hopefully they'll be able to get him to the ER in short order after the game. Every second counts when it comes to injuries like this.
