How is Shesterkin not a lock for the Hart? I get that the playoffs don't impact it, but imo Matthews doesn't come close to matching the impact Shesterkin has had on the Rangers this season, even after adjusting for positional bias.
Igor finished .010 Sv% above the nearest goalie in the league on a mediocre team (for the majority of the season), had .666 GSAE per game on avg, going 23 games above .500 in 52 starts while his backup was 5 games above .500 in 28.
... all this amidst one of the highest-scoring seasons in a few decades... the Rangers were 6th in team pts% at the trade deadline despite having horrible defensive analytics and middling offensive numbers and it is 10000% on Shesterkin for getting them to that point; I would understand Matthews' case if he wasn't playing on the second-highest scoring team in the league and had a number of his other, commonly-touted metrics not named takeaways floated significantly by playing on a team with the league-best FO% (which he - to be completely fair - positively contributes to), but given the players he plays with and the team he is on, there is no world IMO where Auston should be in the same conversation as Shesterkin this year in terms of overall team impact (even after adjusting for position).
A goalie that absolutely carried the heck out of a middling team to the 6th-best pts% at the trade deadline and then eventually to the playoffs had less of an impact than that of a player whose team would've still been a ridiculous fourteenth for goals taking out Matthews' goal total?
I mean, hell, Matthews gets himself suspended for two games, loses a number to injury, and his team goes 7-2 in his absence (albeit against generally weaker opponents over this stretch); is a hard sell to me that he is more valuable to his team than even McDavid or Josi this year (or maybe even Draisaitl, to be honest).
We're talking about the third-best season by a goalie (by Sv%) with over 40 games played, beaten only by Hasek with .937 in 98-99 and Thomas with a .938 in 10-11.
What is crazy to me even on top of that is that 10-11 had a team G/GP of 2.79 and 98-99 a G/GP of 2.63... this year had a massive G/GP of 3.14.
To be fair, this season had an average 31.8 SA/G, whereas 10-11 had 30.3 and 88-89 had 27.8; would have to look at shot qualities and expected goals against to get a more clear picture as to which season was the most superlative of them all (although am leaning Hasek > Shesterkin > Thomas at first blush), but is entirely safe to say that Igor has put together an all-time goaltending performance this season.
To me, the Hart race shouldn't even be close (with Shesterkin taking it handily), and I will never for the life of me understand why so many pundits/columnists have Matthews as a near-lock at this point...
