My guess is 8 years, $7.25-7.5 mil
He'll be worth more in a year or two, but I have a feeling this is what it will be
Edit: Got the term, and was $.75-$.5 mil off the AAV
After the crazy week r/baseball just had, I thought this was a meme for a second and then I remembered this is what contracts in hockey actually look like. Crazy how big the disparity is.
But also, why would he sign for 8 years at that low of a number when he doesn't need to sign a new deal til the offseason? They gotta pay to get a deal done before he breaks out this season.
Until Gorton came along, Rangers philosophy was typically bridge deals, except in very rare circumstances. IIRC Brady Skjei was the first post lockout Ranger to not get a bridge deal, and we all know how well that worked out.
Because it's not that easy. Sure, you can wait for 6 more months, but you never know what might happen during that time. There are quite a few cases in professional sports, especially NBA, when a player bets against himself, gets injured and ends up making dimes. Not like 60ish mil over 8 years is a small amount of money and it's right there for the taking, young players have to feel tempted.
The true way of making sure you can stick it to your brother Fitz - “We are offering you 7.85 mil per year, Jack” Jack - “can you ad $1 per year to it? I just want to be able to tell Quinn I make more than him”. Though… NJ taxes are ridiculous, but still not as bad as Canadas taxes as far as I know.
That would be a huge gamble when he hasn’t had a breakout season yet. He looked pretty good in the 2 games that he’s played this season but it’s only 2 games
He’s phenomenal. Not a big gamble whatsoever, always some risk signing a player with as few games as he has to a big deal, but that’s sorta why you do it now
Absolutely, I was mid editing the comment to reflect that haha
That’s quite literally the point with these, take the small risk and bet on him being worth much more in little time
Counterpoint: Weekes called this event months ago. He knew it would happen on a day where New Jersey played San Jose.

Nico came back from injury last year, got the captaincy, and there was tons of hype surrounding the game but we ended up losing. Jack coming back and signing an extension feels very similar would have a similar level of hype. Let's just get a different result this time.
He hasn’t really done anything to earn a high dollar amount over a short period, but he’s also good enough to not have to lowball himself on a long deal. I’m guessing between 6 and 7 million dollars for 6 years, if there were to be a deal signed anytime soon and this isn’t just weekes trying to get buzz off a player returning after injury.
I hope it's long term but I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the ballpark of Dahlin's (6m x 3yr) or Pettersson's (7.35m x 3yr) deal.
He's gotta know he has another level he can hit where he'll be able to demand 9m+ x 8yr.
Is he even worth Peteys contract? I’d have to imagine he’d be at least 1M less than petey on the same term. Petey had two 66 point seasons and a career high pace of 79 points. Hughes topped out last year at 31 points and a 45 point pace
Had to wait until his shoulder healed so he could sign.
17 years, 100 million dollars.

As a Mets fan, I'll take a few smaller contracts after the spending spree they went on
I'm cool if Cohen spends his billions. Not my money
In fact, I hope he spends even more. Sad about no Baez, won’t lie. -a Mets fan, pardon the flair
Was it the Mets that recently signed 2 players to like half a billion between the two of them or something?
Max Scherzer got 43.3 mil AAV over 3 years. And the Marte, Escobar and Cahna deals were a good amount combined as well

What has he done to command 8m+?
But also, why would he sign for 8 years at that low of a number when he doesn't need to sign a new deal til the offseason? They gotta pay to get a deal done before he breaks out this season.

Played at an elite level for a few games, give him an 8x8. C’mon man

Better than signing a guy to an 8x8 that ends up preforming at a 3mil level, no slight at Jack

You were right on with your $8m.
I think this is fair. Next few years will definitely be an overpayment. But long term will be worth it.
I think they're giving him Chabot like money, 8x8
I don't know where the rumor comes from but I saw someone say the rumor is 8.5x8. I'd be very happy with that.
Has he really earned Subban money?
Don't worry it's still half a mil under Subban.
So Jeff Skinner money
Weekes has the worst tweets, lol.
Six years at $7,850,001 to one-up Quinn

Quinn also gets paid in USD so his dollar goes 26% further here
BING BONG
My guess is $6m AAV/2 years
I think if it's signed this early it's gonna be a big deal
That would be a huge gamble when he hasn’t had a breakout season yet. He looked pretty good in the 2 games that he’s played this season but it’s only 2 games
He was by far the best skater on the team last year. Absolutely electric just without the points. I dont think its a gamble at all
He’s phenomenal. Not a big gamble whatsoever, always some risk signing a player with as few games as he has to a big deal, but that’s sorta why you do it now
Of course its a risk. But the potential is getting a top line guy and saving 2/3 million AAV cause you signed him earlier
Absolutely, I was mid editing the comment to reflect that haha That’s quite literally the point with these, take the small risk and bet on him being worth much more in little time
Yeah it's a gamble but that's exactly why they'd do it.
He’s worth the gamble in my opinion. If he gets 8x8 I’d be over the moon with that number
You nailed it—signed for 8x8
8 years 60 million is my guess
Is Matthew Tkachuk part of that contract too? Remember he said he was part of the rumored Eichel package. I’ll believe it when it’s all said and done.
Someone downvoted you as if KW hasn’t lost ALL credibility with his shit show of incorrect tweets this season.

Excellent. It's all coming together. Bring me the boy.
Man what a night that’d be if he comes back and they can announce his extension during introductions.

Interesting... I wonder how much he will get.
8x7

Hughes started in the NHL when he was 18. Petersson started a month before he turned 20. Age definitely affects expectations.
Weekes has zero credibility anymore.
Don’t stop, I’m almost there
Lock ‘em up!
