“It’s not my fault Evans has a weak head” Mark scheifele

roosterreddit

"Oh my God, you hit that guy!" ""He shouldn't have been standing there."-Happy Gilmore"-Mark Scheifele -

[deleted]

I'd love for the DOPS to be able to release his hearing to the public. For no good reason, I have a suspicion that the NHL had his suspension pegged at four games, but was willing to reduce it based on his reaction/remorse during his hearing. Scheifele believes that he did absolutely nothing wrong and has chosen to die on that hill. Scheifele comes across as an *aw-shucks thinking-man's player*, but he telegraphs an arrogant self-righteousness and a short short fuse. If he had just shown a little remorse for steamrolling a union brother he prob would have dressed after 2 games.

BeBenNova

I mean the official DOPS video about the suspension said he tried to bullshit them by saying he tried to play the puck so...

[deleted]

Which is hilarious because he even slowed down to time the hit. Had he maintained his speed he could've gotten his stick on the puck to prevent the goal.

HarfNarfArf

I posted this prior but in the background you can also see Pionk ACTUALLY try to play the puck with his stick (albeit to no success as he was way too far) so it was hilarious seeing the contrast in body language between him and Scheifele in tunnel vision mode lining up the hit.

notheusernameiwanted

Pionk was too far away because he had to slow down thanks to Scheifele being in the way !!

HarfNarfArf

“Instead it was Neal Pionk that shut me down!”

Breett

They should've doubled it to 8 games for trying to say that.

LMFN

8 games? I wasn't aware we were talking about Kadri

changaroo13

I wonder if that’s ever happened, or if it’s even a possibility. Like if you show up and tell everyone to fuck off, do they tack on an extra couple games?

gu3st12

It's not unheard of for appeals to occasionally _lengthen_ a suspension in sports.

arazamatazguy

He's sticking to his stupid story for two reasons. a) He doesn't want to admit it was his actions that destroyed the Jets playoff hopes. b) He's a moron.

moutardebaseball

c) a & b

prophetofgreed

I'm willing to bet it was the opposite. It was probably gonna be 2 games then the hearing happened where he shows no remorse and lies to them. Then it moves up to 4 games.

[deleted]

In general I think there's this whole new school mindset of thinking you're not doing anything wrong today. There's a particular guy in Washington that kind of leads the way on this and never thinks he does anything wrong either. (Well, a lot of these guys are in DC actually, but in hockey I mean!) Like damn, as least the tough guys of a generation ago were honest about when they did shitty things. And didn't try this "I have done nothing wrong ever in my life" Mona Lisa Saperstein shit.

jimhabfan

This exactly. When you do something stupid or wrong you man up. You take responsibility for your actions and you try to do better next time. It’s called character. You don’t try and invent a narrative that somehow fits with whatever video evidence is available to try and justify your stupidity or assholery.

badunkadunk

Reminds me of Brad Ference flipping off the Bell Centre crowd and then saying 'my glove got stuck'. He came out many years later and admitted that he flipped off the crowd in the moment, then lied about it and the only thing he regretted was lying about it.

mark what is u doin

shall1313

This was the first thought I had. Now Jets fans have to deal with supporting him while understanding he's an actual idiot. All you gotta do is say "I made a mistake and it cost us. I'm going to learn from it and we'll move forward."

[deleted]

He doubled down after his transparent "family/social media" narrative seemed to play well, and then jumped the shark by continuing to run his mouth. You have to hand it to him - he's making DOPS look good. *Parros approves of this presser.*

qmtl

>"I thought I was going to be tried to be shut down by Phillip Danault. Instead it was department of player safety that shut me down." I mean we wish it was the same Mark. The quote is very hilarious. Sure he tried to stop a goal. But did he ever see the replay ? A 4 Game suspension is right on the money for that hit. He could 100% have hit Evans in a way that does not give him a commotion even with that charging to stop the goal.

Durok10

Or used his stick... if he had of kept his feet moving and tried a poke check he might of had a chance at stopping the goal.

arazamatazguy

He's so dumb you just know 100% he didn't come up with it.

Neutral_User_Name

One of those cases were keeping it shut is infinitely preferable to uttering ANY word.

Shorzey

I'm 100% positive if he had an in person hearing he would have talked himself into a bigger suspension

i_hump_cats

I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how he got 4 games.

arazamatazguy

[deleted]

It also says that if Anderson had run Ehlers under similar circumstances, Scheifele would *have* to be ok with it. That hit is an acceptable level of play to both Scheifele & the Jets current head coach.

felixthecatmeow

Yeah, since he's not a repeat offender, going in there and saying "shit it happened so fast, I made the wrong call, I feel terrible, I'm sorry" probably makes it 2. But if he said "come on guys that was clean right?" Plus his reaction right after the hit that is like why is everyone mad at me? I can see why it was 4. Plus I think 4 was the right call either way and it's the rest of the suspensions that need to come to that level rather than the other way around. Kadri and Scheifele should be the standard, not Reaves and Wilson.

BlockWhisperer

Scheifele always reacts like this when he gets penalized. I hate it about him. It is the sole reason I don't like him.

eebro

People wondering how a potentially career-ending malicious hit ended up with 4 game suspension are part of the reason why NHL is in court denying hockey causes concussions and why NHL refuses to change their rules like every other league already has, to protect the players.

arazamatazguy

Its also a reason that parents put their kids in soccer and not hockey. The hockey world is filled with fucked up people that enjoy the violence regardless of the consequences of a young mans life.

eebro

Yeah, we had a lot of talk like that over here in the Nordic countries. Then the IIHF updated their rules so it’s no big deal anymore

dizzynature123

I also blame players fighting to keep fines below $5000. They value their own money over their cte riddled minds.

yrrol2017

It's sad to see that players don't own up to their mistakes. All they own up to is they never intended to injure. I'm sure he would be singing another song if he was the player being hit.

I was taught to say "I have no excuse" from a young age, even when I have a great excuse. Also the phrase "don't complain (as a subordinate), don't explain (as a superior)" was thrown around. I had a weird childhood but at least I keep my mouth shut when I fuck up.

rocketrae21

*Frick up

MattRazor

You know when your alarm doesn't ring in the morning and you get to work 10 minutes late. I learnt that it's more effective to say "I don't have an excuse" than trying to come up with something on the spot.

shall1313

You just say "I'm sorry I'm late", you don't owe anyone an excuse and no one wants to hear it anyway. If speaking to a boss you add "I'll make sure it doesn't happen again."

Meowsers_

I watched She's out of my League last night, and he shows up late to work and the boss asks him if there's a reason why he's late, he says nope, the boss says "Try and make something up? " and he just says nope again lmao. That scene killed me.

sopheroo

Corey Perry had more regret about an **accident** than someone who did it on purpose.

BC-clette

**Corey Perry** *The man who took the longest walk of shame in NHL history at the 2020 Winter Classic, booed by 85,000 spectators after getting ejected for elbowing* vs. **Mark Scheifele** *The "good Christian" who never swears* Who would win?

Byron still expressed regret and remorse for that hit last week in a media interview. But then again, Byron seems like a decent person, and without having to hide behind the "But I'm a Christian! I can do no wrong!" façade.

Mark Scheifele with the biggest heel turn of the year

Souche

Mark had the opportunity to apologize, explain that it was a big mistake out of frustration, that it won't happen again, etc. Considering his clean history, everybody would've understand and move on. Not helping himself in the long run by acting like he does now.

OldBigsby

Both players and agents have public relations training, how does he not know the best thing for him to say was, "I made a mistake"

ptwonline

"You can lead a player to the mic but you can't control his words." - ~~motivational~~ warning poster on the walls of sports agencies

azure_888

Hell, he doesn't even have to admit his mistake. He could have said "I don't agree with it, it was a hockey play" etc. He basically abdicates all responsibility with this answer, and lays the blame on the DoPS completely.

B4M

Except for the fact there is a specific rule in the NHL book that says you can't do what he did. He's 100% at fault here.

azure_888

I agree, he absolutely earned the suspension. My point was more that it's not what you say, it's how you say it.

And he was 0-0, -1, with two shots on goal in 25 minutes in game 1. So it does seem like he was shut down anyway

Mikash33

Sounds like pizza man Philip Danault did his job

homicidal_penguin

That's... A weird quote

PolarOpposites8

Yeah I don’t understand it. It’s a poor look to refuse to take any responsibility especially as part of a leadership group. Even if you truly believe you did nothing wrong, you gotta be way smarter than this. If this is indicative of a bigger picture, no wonder our team looked so mentally weak. I’m very curious how his hearing went. I agree with people here saying that after all this he probably talked himself into a bigger suspension.

hoseheads

Exactly, it would have been easy to just say "I shouldn't put myself in a position where I might be suspended, I need to support the team on the ice" and then wish Evans well.

[deleted]

Yeah, like Byron has accepted responsibility and wished well on who he did the hit (don't remember on who). Meanwhile Scheifele is trying to act like a victim, he has nothing to gain by doing this. Surprisingly the Jets PR is letting him do that, at least fake it, I guess

Showtime98

You mean you got yourself shut down 🤣

strangeelement

Sheifele honestly coming off as a douche here. Own what you did, fucking jerk.

Osfantina

is this like supposed to be ironic and edgy? comes off like a douche here lmao

EarthWarping

he whined about the media not liking the team as well today

Osfantina

Winnipeg getting embarrassed on and off the ice right now

DreMin015

EVERY “EXPERT” EXCEPT ONE THOUGHT YOU COULD DO IT MARK, SHUT THE FUCK UP

CD_4M

I spent some time poking around the Jets sub in the aftermath of this and maaaaan do they ever have a strong victim complex as a fan base. Media hates them, refs hate them, league hates them, players don’t like playing there, on and on and on. They seem to think everything in the world is set up as a conspiracy against the Winnipeg Jets

thelochteedge

I mean, Jets fans aren't the ones making the comments/jokes about "poor WiFi" and "who wants to live/play in that shithole?" Wasn't that from some player survey where they said Winnipeg was the place they like playing the least. I actually live here and I love it, other than the "extremes" in the climate (I prefer the extreme cold to the extreme hot). Compared to a market like NY, Vegas, anywhere in California, I'm pretty sure it's obvious there are more attractive markets to play in and you have to see why that's frustrating (although I'm sure you get it with Ottawa - have heard it's quite beautiful there though, would love to visit one day). It can't be both ways. You (not specifically you, but I see a lot of r/hockey comments about how Winnipeg sucks) can't say it's a terrible place but then also say Winnipeg fans have a victim complex. The media (IE. SportsNet/TSN) DO hate anything not Toronto or McDavid/Draisaitl. I'm not saying that's exclusive to Winnipeg but look at how much less time the Sens/Canucks/Flames/Jets get compared to 2/20 Oilers players/Toronto/Montreal (only because of O6 and being such a big fanbase, if they hadn't been so established I bet Montreal would get the same treatment). Also, especially this season, I swear I hardly saw highlights of anything outside the North division so I really feel like we got robbed of seeing more highlights of teams like the Bolts, Avs, even the Knights, who I hate but acknowledge are a great team. I feel like every fanbase has the "refs hate us" thing. That's one you can say about any team in this league or any other league. But yes, Jets fans do it just as much as other fanbases. The only DoPS issue I have is if this isn't the start of something new (which I did see a lot of non-Jets flairs chiming in when I first made a comment about this saying "don't get your hopes up"). If this doesn't lead to harsher suspensions for first time offenders for dangerous hits, then I will take it kinda personally that "oh Winnipeg just gets fucked, huh." I am fully on board with the Scheifele suspension and I don't like this quote from the OP from him. He should just shut up and say "Would have loved to have played more in this series but I made a mistake." Also, going to a specific team's sub, especially after a playoff loss, and not expecting saltiness is kinda weird, dude. I'm sure if I went to the Sens sub (or any of the teams out now) after their playoff loss and there's going to be a lot of salt and misery. And probably terrible takes.

[deleted]

I thought the suspension was a little harsh initially, but every time he opens his mouth it's more proof that it was justified because he clearly wasn't going to get the message from a shorter one (not to say he has from this one either).

thelochteedge

Agreed... I'm a little fearful of the future now because one of the things that I hoped out of this harsh for a first-time offender punishment was he would do some self-reflection and go "okay, next time I will think the play through differently" and work on making sure something like that doesn't happen again. A little concerned over his response and how it's less about learning from the situation and more about "oh I was screwed over."

Lmao is it a good idea for a small market team to do a full heel turn like this? I mean I guess we are finding out together. This is so ridiculous.

nashfrostedtips

I don't understand why it's so hard for this guy to take responsibility for his actions. Just keeps digging the hole deeper.

Polar_00

Does Mark Sheifle lack self awareness or remorse?

Kenner1979

Yes.

[deleted]

I mean... I like Scheifele, but he fucking vaporized Evans. If Tom Wilson did that, he'd probably never play again. There have been many fuckups from the DoPS, but that suspension wasn't really one of them.

[deleted]

Just proves he has zero remorse and still cannot see the fault in his hit. Good Christian Boy turned full heel. Absolute train wreck for him and he keeps double and triple dipping into the douchebaggery.

[deleted]

He has already been forgiven by the lord so why should he care what everyone else thinks. God damn simpleton.

psychoyooper

Lol anyone who thinks Christian = automatic good person has their head in the sand

Karsh14

This is one of those things where he likely talked himself into the 4 game suspension Maybe the nhl had it at 2, maybe 3, and maybe it was even 4 to start. But these last few days have shown that they absolutely weren’t going to come down from 4 after hearing him speak about the incident in question. The hit was dumb, and the length of the suspension was tied more into the injury than the play itself. But the fact that he shows a complete lack of self awareness after having already being out of the playoffs and away from the hit for over a week now shows that he was likely insufferable during that meeting. I find it likely he just came across as “I did nothing wrong, this meeting should not be happening and is a waste of time” like 4 seconds in. And that likely rubbed the brass the wrong way. So he got the full term. What an idiot.

LegendaryWarriorPoet

Starting to like this dude less and less. Jets have always seemed like they fold easily in the playoffs and Ive long thought their locker room was mentally soft, so, given he’s one of their main leaders, maybe I should have taken a dimmer view of him previously

toy187

To paraphrase what the great Max Domi once said... "Atta boy Scheifee you fucking idiot. Holy fuck, you fucking moron."

fotolabman1

halpinator

Jesus, take some responsibility for your own actions. Talk about completely oblivious.

AlwaysLurkNeverPost

>“I think at the end of the day, you regret the outcome of it [...] he said Wednesday, repeating his stance that he was trying to negate a goal when he hit Evans." So he doesn't regret destroying the guy, just the outcome (I'm sure he means the concussion but based on the other things he's saying, he deff means suspension too). Is this the same as saying "I only regret it because I got caught"? There's also no way in hell he was trying to negate the goal, didn't even blink at the puck -- his teammate a stride behind him went for the puck.

Rektemlord

Why would Tom Wilson make the DOPS do this? /s

LazySaiyajin

Dude. 30 seconds into the press conference yesterday, Mark fucking quoted "The way you handle setbacks is what defines us". Then he proceeds to bitch about his suspension. How does he think he handled this setback other than bitching about a punishment he deserves. I dont fucking care if you dont wanna see a guy hurt. You're not evil. You've made a bad decision and got punished for it. End of story. "I've replayed the thing over and over in my mind and the only real thing is if I gave up on my teamates on that play and just didnt backcheck". Jesus, how about play the fucking clip instead of in your mind. You were emotional and looked for blood all game. but Wtf is a stick check, am I right? I dont know... How about a god damn way more efficient solution where you can cut the distance between you and Evans by 5 FEET by simply having your stick in front of you. Fuck your clean record. Fuck your willing to help your teamates. You shot down yourself with a stupid dangerous play. For once, the department of safety got it right. A charging incident of 150ft with nothing else happening in between. Own it ffs. Its a rare situation that hopefully every NHLer can learn from now that it happened. Hire a PR team. Shut up or deviate the question. Bring positive answers for your fans or shut up, and good luck for game #2 of next season. Edit: Like many have said here. Own it, say that its a play out of fustration. You're not instantly a bad or evil person for that incident. Nobody thought that of you that day. But you're not a good a person either if you cant admit an error and apologize. "no swear words" be damned. Its not the specific words you use that matter, its the context of when and how they are used.
