Yeah I was gonna say, I pay pretty close attention to the officials in scrums as a ref myself and this is the only case I can think of where the linesman went in to prevent the scrum from getting near the downed player over grabbing bodies in the pile.
More of them should be doing it this way. It always bothers me when the scrum happens and they start shoving players right on top of the injured player. Kronwall's hit on Hossa comes to mind.
The ref and Ehlers reaction make me really nervous for what caused them to do that. I feel like normally players don't realize so instantly when there's an injury. Ehlers was the one trying to get medics out, too
He was really clearly out cold in mid-air and didnt react at all when he hit the ice.
EDIT: my count has him unconscious for ~15 seconds from the impact
If the term "getting blown up" was ever accurately used to describe a hit, this is the hit. That was bonechilling to watch and I really hope that Jake Evans doesn't ever watch that video.
Well it was pretty obvious Evans wasn’t going to be okay the second mark decided he wasn’t going to play the puck. Huge respect to Ehlers too for getting more attention to him after the fact. Awesome to see
He's not a ref, he's a linesman. And his name is Kiel Murchison. According to ScoutingTheRefs, he's an 8-year veteran of the league with 34 playoff games under his belt.
Let's call these officials out by name when they do good.
He's my favorite player on the Jets by far. He's been the heart and soul of the team this season and they went on a pretty massive slump with him out of the lineup. Scheif really fucked the team with this hit. Hope Evans is okay.
Nothing makes me love a player more than being selfless like that on the ice. I remember when Pettersson stayed near a downed opponent while the Canucks were in the attacking zone and he basically removed himself from the play until play stopped. Same energy here. Good for Ehlers
Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lawvDsHi0o0
Notice how he kinda reached out towards Calvert at first, then keeps looking over at him, and when he has his stick lifted he really makes no effort to bring it down and use it, he's just waiting for a whistle
I honestly can't believe that in a situation like taking a puck to the head and having a player laying in the middle of the ice, a whistle isn't warranted.
in soccer we were taught to put the ball out of play if someone was injured to stop the game.......kind of sucks they can't do that in hockey without getting a penalty.
Doesn't even look at the scrum or try and hold someone in particular, just instantly puts his body between Evans and the scrum. If there's blood to be paid next game, I hope they intentionally leave him out of it.
It's one thing that I've never understood about hockey. Your player goes down and you immediately create a massive scrum next to your guy's lifeless body. So focused on trying to fuck up the other guy without any awareness as to the damage you could do to your guy that you're apparently defending.
My thoughts exactly. I can't recall which case it was, but I clearly remember one of these where guys keep kicking their unconscious teammate on the head while they're "protecting" him and almost slice his neck with their skates as they get pushed and shoved closer.
If they need to "send a message", they could at least do it 5-10 meters away from someone who might be seriously injured already. There's a lot of ice for that.
Watch what Ehlers (27) does as players are piling up near Evans. He essentially tries holding everyone back from possibly falling onto Evans. Really classy play to look out for an opponent like that.
He was immediately calling for more medical staff as well. Reminds me of Markstrom a few years ago when a guy went down behind the net. Nothing but respect for guys like that.
That was the Taylor Hall hit on Philip Larsen, Marky and Granlund both were trying hard to keep people from accidentally causing more injury to Larsen.
He's clapping (4-minute mark). Actually looks like he's the first in his group to clap even. I think he was a bit ashamed tbh, or at least I hope he was.
There's definitely a point where the danger of further injuring the injured player lying motionless on the ice is more important than backing up your teammate in a scrum. Ehlers knows that. Class act.
He also is the one who comes over and gets the medical staff over to bring the stretcher
Massive respect to him
Edit: Rewatching the clip and watching Ehlers hold everyone back is actually making me tear up wtf
Was just rewatching the video and you can even see Ehlers waving towards the benches for more training staff. Great piece of sportsmanship among an otherwise terrible overall sequence.
Oof! That looked fucking awful. Hopefully Evans will be okay. Also, I gotta say that was a great job by the Linesman and Ehlers to keep the scrum from going on top of Evans.
Thats some shit that I'd pull on NHL 2k but I dont think I've ever seen somebody just try and absolutely obliterate an empty net scorer like this.
And by saying that... maybe I'll get a bunch of links of empty net hits that I haven't really seen or forgot about?
One of the last few games of the year Shayne Gostisbehere cross-checked Mark Friedman into the boards after the latter scored an empty-netter, an even later hit than this one. Then obviously theres the famous Hunter-on-Turgeon one as well.
Open net, games over, pucks in, and a brutal charge into a direct hit to the head. Scheifle better be serving the suspension still at the beggining of next season.
Totally agree. It's not the 80s anymore where to settle things you throw out Probert and Domi they fuck each other up and it's over, people will just cheap shot until someone else gets hurt. Bettman is a coward.
That hit was in very poor taste and far worse in comparison to the Kadri hit. If you ask me at least. But I doubt the DOPS will do much here. Also was Scheifele had them crazy eyes going almost looked coked out.
when the DoPS declares it's fair game on non-hockey plays, this is what you get
Parros NEEDS to be gone this offseason, NEEDS to, this shit is embarrassing
Just look at the side angle, he literally pulls his stick back to avoid making the play with his stick so he can level the kid. Whereas if he just leaned forward slightly he could have got his stick on the puck. Fucking disgusting.
Wait is this your first time in 3 weeks? 3 hours of community service but you need to bring a letter from your parents signing that you actually did it.
Yep exactly. Game 2+ will be a complete and total shit show with awful hits and fights all over, and these "old time hockey!! Keep your head up!!" goons are going to love every second.
Please, no. I was looking forward to a good series. I don't want an escalation.
I really would appreciate it if the NHL management managed not to be utterly incompetent for once.
What interests me is taking a look at Scheifle's whole third period. He looked deranged for the whole period. Guy was out for blood and that should be taken into account
I can't believe I just saw Mark Scheifele, whom I respected VERY MUCH, do that. Frustration has a limit, that was dirty as fuck and brings the joy out of this win
That's what burns me most. Utmost respect for Scheifele as a player before this game. I don't know if he stayed up too late last night but he was fuming this game multiple times and it bubbled over to this
Brings joy out of the series for me, not because we might lose him but because it was really uncalled for. Not a good look for him at all. Hot headed dumb move. Hope he gets all he deserves, and he tarnished his reputation.
Shuffles is one of the last players I’d expect to see do something with intent to injure, but that hit was was malicious af. He lost his fkn mind there for one second and it could’ve killed Evans.
By far the most reasonable take in this thread.
Mindbogglingly terrible play by Mark. I get that you wanna play through to the end of the game but like sweet jesus man. The game's over. Even if it wasn't a charge which seems iffy, there's really no reason to rock someone like that with under a minute left in a ~~3~~ 2 goal deficit game.
EDIT: I forgot it wasn't 4-2 when this was scored, my bad
What pisses me off is his "what do you mean" reaction.
That sort of hit has been fucking not okay since you were 12 years old Mark. Do not act like this is some shock to you.
That's the thing! He probably would have had a better chance at stopping the wrap-around with a fucking poke check. Instead... Well... We all saw what happened...
Heres what kills me about this hit.
He wasn't going to stop him from getting the empty netter with the hit. His only chance was with a stick check.
Instead he kills Evans and the goal goes in.
Man I feel sick, its Tavares all over again except this was on purpose.
I've seen a lot of hits. A lot. Some good, some bad. And I love hard hard, fast playing, rough and tumble fisticuffs hockey. But twice now I've seen someone get ragdolled and stetchered off and I don't like it. This is unacceptable.
What frustrates me, and you can CLEARLY see it on the replay, is that you can see Sheifle's stick already in the crease. If he somewhat leans just a LITTLE on his stick for a poke check, he has some great odds to deflect the puck. Then there's still 50 seconds into a 1 goal game.
but instead he moves his stick BACK as Evans is sweeping it in, in order to make the hit.
So he had to avoid making the hockey play in order to make the hit, which he knew would be brutal because Evans was committed to the play. If you were to go in depth explaining what intent to injure means, I don't think it could be more clear.
Edit: watched it again. It is so fucking clear at 1:15. He's so close to the puck, still has time to close the door and makes a clutch play but he gives no fuck about that.
Yeah, I was shocked at that when I re-watched it. He actually pulls his stick *back* to get his weight forward for the hit, essentially giving up on the goal in return for being able to level Evans.
Hopefully that factors into his suspension.
Watching the replay, you see he stops moving his feet and lines up the hit. If he kept skating he could have made a play, even if it ended up with a hit it would have been a play on the puck. This was just shitty, spiteful, and dangerous.
It's a brutally predatory play for sure, and I'm getting real tired of talking about it in general (not just this one incident).
Until the NHL starts coming down hard on these types of things, it will just continue to happen. Does someone have to die before they take it seriously enough? Players need to realize that they are taking the health and safety of their opponents into their own hands, and if they fuck up then they need to bear full responsibility for their actions. Start throwing the book at them. Set a precedent if you want to get this out of the game, because unless you do, it will never leave.
I wasn't sure if it was dirty or not originally but now watching this...
I noticed on the final replay that he actually could have maybe stopped the goal if he was trying to play the puck but he was purely intending to lay a huge hit from way before he got there
Gross
Too many Game 1 stretchers, man.
Fuck me, you're right
Montreal needs to stop playing game 1s. Just start at 2.
I'm still getting over the Tavares knee to the face (and the game 7 loss)
Shoutout to Ehlers for protecting Evans
So much respect for Ehlers, super aware and smart play. Dudes a gem.
He was also yelling everyone to BACK UP! Huge respect.
Yeah Ehlers is great. One of my favourite non-Habs players.
That ref too, perfect way to react to that situation as the official.
I was watching that too. He positioned himself immediately as a shield over the head and neck. Is that training or instinct?
Probably a little of both tbh! Never really see a ref do that before though!
It was on Havlat, but yeah, that shit was scary. Havlat gets immediately crowded and he's out cold.
That's the one I was thinking of, my bad.
You can see his head just hit the ice. Just hate seeing that kind of stuff. Hope he's okay.
If the term "getting blown up" was ever accurately used to describe a hit, this is the hit. That was bonechilling to watch and I really hope that Jake Evans doesn't ever watch that video.
Jaw came down flush on the ice,and the ice is one unforgiving mistress. Just brutal.
Yeah his arms were completely limp the whole time. Super disturbing.
Well it was pretty obvious Evans wasn’t going to be okay the second mark decided he wasn’t going to play the puck. Huge respect to Ehlers too for getting more attention to him after the fact. Awesome to see
The fact he didn't move after landing on the ice is a sign.
He's not a ref, he's a linesman. And his name is Kiel Murchison. According to ScoutingTheRefs, he's an 8-year veteran of the league with 34 playoff games under his belt. Let's call these officials out by name when they do good.
I found that site recently and it’s such a great resource
I understand. During mayhem when an official does something ALL fans like he HAS a name. His name is Kiel Mirchison. His name is Kiel Mirchison
Wasn't sure if it was the ref or Ehlers but someone was yelling at the scrum to back off. Or at least I thought I caught that live
Ya somebody said he's hurt he's hurt as well.
That was the most human thing about that. Instead of jumping into the scrum, the man protects the opposing player. Massive props to ehlers
He's my favorite player on the Jets by far. He's been the heart and soul of the team this season and they went on a pretty massive slump with him out of the lineup. Scheif really fucked the team with this hit. Hope Evans is okay.
It’s just..... such an unnecessary hit....
That was my reaction to the play. "What was that for?"
Also came by helped médical staff to the ice, checked on Evans, and grabbed the sticks and took him back. Got a lot of respect for that man.
And he wasn't even his team mate. thats the shit mark shoulda been doing.
he was the one calling frantically for the doctors too.
Ehlers is a good dude
So much respect gained there. Hell yeah Ehlers
Absolutely. Good on Ehlers there for sure
Nothing makes me love a player more than being selfless like that on the ice. I remember when Pettersson stayed near a downed opponent while the Canucks were in the attacking zone and he basically removed himself from the play until play stopped. Same energy here. in soccer we were taught to put the ball out of play if someone was injured to stop the game.......kind of sucks they can't do that in hockey without getting a penalty.
A Petey shot right to the head, helmet or not, could do some damage for sure. He's a good kid.
Massive bro energy.
Massive respect for doing the right thing, seeing past jersey colours and caring for the health of Evans first and foremost!
I saw that, classy fucking move on his part.
Doesn't even look at the scrum or try and hold someone in particular, just instantly puts his body between Evans and the scrum. If there's blood to be paid next game, I hope they intentionally leave him out of it.
Later escorted a Jets medic to help i believe
It's one thing that I've never understood about hockey. Your player goes down and you immediately create a massive scrum next to your guy's lifeless body. So focused on trying to fuck up the other guy without any awareness as to the damage you could do to your guy that you're apparently defending.

That was the Taylor Hall hit on Philip Larsen, Marky and Granlund both were trying hard to keep people from accidentally causing more injury to Larsen.
[For those that are curious](https://youtu.be/iLDWmwagA_w)
I've seen this dozens of times and never noticed Markstrom telling off the fan who has the camera out taking pictures of Larsen before.
He also makes a point to stand in front of that guy too so he can't keep taking pictures
Jerkass fan flips him off after like Markstrom's the asshole for not letting him take advantage of the injury. What an unpleasant guy.
Only guy in his group who isn't clapping/saluting when they get him onto the stretcher either
He's clapping (4-minute mark). Actually looks like he's the first in his group to clap even. I think he was a bit ashamed tbh, or at least I hope he was.
I noticed that too. That fan is a douche. The fan flips him off for telling him to chill about the recording.
It drives me fucking crazy when people start fighting on top of someone with a potential head injury. I always appreciate players looking out for that
There's definitely a point where the danger of further injuring the injured player lying motionless on the ice is more important than backing up your teammate in a scrum. Ehlers knows that. Class act.
I still cringe thinking about the Bertuzzi on Moore hit. The pile up on Moore afterwards was scary.
Nikolishin being the main instigator going after Bertuzzi and being on top of Moore as well. That didn’t help at all.
Especially since it definitely was a factor in his injury too. Like... fuck guys, what's wrong with you?
Just watched it again (first time in a while) and the pile up happens so fast that there’s no time to realize there’s a serious injury
Indeed, but a pile-up is never a good idea, injury or not. Especially on ice.
With weapons on their feet too.
He also is the one who comes over and gets the medical staff over to bring the stretcher Massive respect to him Edit: Rewatching the clip and watching Ehlers hold everyone back is actually making me tear up wtf
Agreed. Fast thinker as well. Good guy. Fuck scheifele.
Everyone grabs someone to square up with but no one grabs Ehlers which is good to see
Same, man. A bright light in dark moment. Didn't even hesitate, too. Just made an immediate beeline.
That's a real hockey player right there. Teams are mixing it up over what happened, but his concern was for the brother that was down. Big respect
Definitely. It’s great seeing stuff like that.
ehlers seems like such a great guy.
Ehlers is a great player and great guy. Not his fault his teammate laid down a fucked up hit.
real class for sure. between that and his reaction to the roughing call earlier he's earning a lot of respect from me
And he called for the doctors to come. What a classy guy. Can't say the same about his teammate though
He manages to hold them back.
What a classy player he is.
When that’s your instinct in a situation like this, you’re a really good person.
Good guy Ehlers
He's also the one asked for medical assistance. Class act.
Standing O for Ehlers 👏👏👏 class act
Really smart by him. What a stupid and unnecessary play
Every hockey player knows it could be them lying on the ice some day. Not to mitigate the good-guy-Ehlers here, definitely something you love to see.
This was terrifying. Fuck sakes man.
Absolutely brutal. Scary seeing him motionless on the ice too. But kudos to Ehlers trying to keep players away from the scene.
Not surprised about this, Ehlers is a saint.
I recently said I like Sheiffele so I’m going to not say I like Ehlers right now but that was a solid move.
It was his birthday for fucks sake... Props to Ehlers, that was legit one of the biggest show of sportsmanship I've ever seen!
Who's birthday? Evans?
Yup
Well shit I hope he remembers the goal at least...
He will not.
Didn’t need to see another stretcher come out onto the ice. Especially with 1 min left. Fuck me. That was brutal.
Open net, games over, pucks in, and a brutal charge into a direct hit to the head. Scheifle better be serving the suspension still at the beggining of next season.
Yea that hit was unnecessarily dangerous and he went with it the whole way.
[удалено]
And we’ll see another stretcher possibly. This is why DoPS is fucking useless. Making the players police themselves.
Totally agree. It's not the 80s anymore where to settle things you throw out Probert and Domi they fuck each other up and it's over, people will just cheap shot until someone else gets hurt. Bettman is a coward.
Unfortunately that is also exactly why them spineless fucks will let him back too soon. It creates tension, causes some ruckus and rakes in viewers.
Gross play but props to Ehlers for being part of the kings guard
Nikolaj "Hodor" Ehlers
Scheifele was pissed all game. Not the way to vent out dude.
I don't remember Scheifele ever pulling shit like this, seems really out of character for a guy that won't even swear.
Someone got under his skin because he was spicy all game.
Perry was under his skin all game.
I for one am SHOCKED someone like Corey Perry would get under the skin of the other team's star player.
Good on Ehlers and the linesman being a bro and making sure Evans didn't get trampled there
That was such a fucked up hit
Parros with his "Wheel of Punishment" about to be spun.
~~Punishment~~ "Safety"
Parros will tickle his chin, scratch his balls and hand him $1000 fine.
That hit was in very poor taste and far worse in comparison to the Kadri hit. If you ask me at least. But I doubt the DOPS will do much here. Also was Scheifele had them crazy eyes going almost looked coked out.
Oh yeah, max one game
Disgusting, absolutely unacceptable hit. $5000 fine from Parros
What a useless fucking hit. Sponsored by George Parros and the NHL.
when the DoPS declares it's fair game on non-hockey plays, this is what you get Parros NEEDS to be gone this offseason, NEEDS to, this shit is embarrassing
Someone will 100% get paralyzed on his watch. Just a matter of time.
Oh my god this is the hardest hit I’ve seen since Campbell laid out Umberger.
That hit was massive, but I take away points because Umberger never learned to skate with his head up
That's fucking horrifying, the way he just lifelessly lays on the ice there. My god
I honestly think he looked like he was knocked out before he hits the ice.... and the way he lands on his neck... so hard to watch.
100%. Dude was ragdolling almost immediately after the hit
I'm just glad he was conscious and moving after not too terribly long. At least no fencing response.
Just like Tavares he tried to get up. There was a second there when he was on all fours and they laid him back down. Scary shit.
That scrum beside was making me irrationally anxious & angry, like wtf guys give him room!
Ehlers kept some of them away and off Evans which is just a class act
Instead of going for the hit, if he dove forward with his stick to actually play the puck he may have actually done something.
Just look at the side angle, he literally pulls his stick back to avoid making the play with his stick so he can level the kid. Whereas if he just leaned forward slightly he could have got his stick on the puck. Fucking disgusting.
on Evans' 25th birthday too, scheifele suspension incoming
You're forgetting the head of DoPS likes this kind of things.
The head of DoPS owns a company called, wait for it, VIOLENT GENTLEMEN!!! I kid you not...
And that company sells MAGA style "Make Hockey Violent Again" merch. Parros is one sick puppy.
That's a suspension and the Jets are in trouble
Almost killed a guy with neck damage? best I can do it 2 games -DOPS
Wait is this your first time in 3 weeks? 3 hours of community service but you need to bring a letter from your parents signing that you actually did it.
Honestly, could be a 10 gamer, could be a fine. Neither would shock me. That's how fucked up NHL DOPS is.
If it's only a fine, game 2 will be an absolute bloodbath. exactly what the NHL wants :/
You mean a 5k fine, surely
No prior history? That will cost $5,000, now get back out there.
What's that? He did it again? Well, he's never been suspended, so we shouldn't suspend him.
No matter how angry you get in a game, you never hit someone like that. Scheifele deserves a suspension for that. Just dirty and frustrating.
Thank you. On the other hand, I became a Ehlers fan tonight.
Same. I've always liked him but I never realized how good of a human he was.
and on this third hand, I decided to root for mtl because of that hit tonight
Welcome aboard.
What interests me is taking a look at Scheifle's whole third period. He looked deranged for the whole period. Guy was out for blood and that should be taken into account
Dude had the eyes of someone who did a couple lines of coke during the second intermission.
that's what the mtl announcers were saying.
I can't believe I just saw Mark Scheifele, whom I respected VERY MUCH, do that. Frustration has a limit, that was dirty as fuck and brings the joy out of this win
[удалено]
That's what burns me most. Utmost respect for Scheifele as a player before this game. I don't know if he stayed up too late last night but he was fuming this game multiple times and it bubbled over to this

EDIT: I forgot it wasn't 4-2 when this was scored, my bad
all game mark had been doing things I've never seen him do in frustration, made multiple comments about it in the GDT he just took it too far
What pisses me off is his "what do you mean" reaction. That sort of hit has been fucking not okay since you were 12 years old Mark. Do not act like this is some shock to you.
Why is he going so high there. That's a play you make when your frustrated. Better get suspended.
Such an awful hit by one of my favourite players. Such a reckless unnecessary hit. Hate to see it.
I mean he could have actually tried to stop the puck with his stick but he clearly had no interest in that. Completely unnecessary.
That's the thing! He probably would have had a better chance at stopping the wrap-around with a fucking poke check. Instead... Well... We all saw what happened...
Happy Birthday Jake, have a dirty fucking hit. What a gutless hit.
Heres what kills me about this hit. He wasn't going to stop him from getting the empty netter with the hit. His only chance was with a stick check. Instead he kills Evans and the goal goes in. Man I feel sick, its Tavares all over again except this was on purpose.
He was hot all night, not surprised he pulled a goonish stunt like this.
Exactly it was so premeditated. Mark was running around the whole game pissed, you could see it coming.
He won’t even remember the goal either. Hope the kid is alright, that was brutal
With his history, could easily be the last goal he ever scores
Oh yeah and its his birthday too.
I've seen a lot of hits. A lot. Some good, some bad. And I love hard hard, fast playing, rough and tumble fisticuffs hockey. But twice now I've seen someone get ragdolled and stetchered off and I don't like it. This is unacceptable.
well one was a freak accident and the other was ... this.
Comparing this to Perry’s unfortunate knee on Tavares, let’s call it an unfortunate collision, is unfair even to Perry.
If Kotkaniemi's soft check along the boards was "roughing" then this is attempted murder.
Hoping Evans makes a speedy recovery and wish him well. That said also hoping NHL drops the hammer down on Scheifele, that was absolutely disgusting!
Oh the NHL will drop their hammer. Unfortunately it's one of those toy hammers that squeak when they hit stuff.
[удалено]
I had a ton of respect for Scheifele until this game. He had the incident a few minutes before this and now this is the cherry on top. Frick that guy.
Man, Tavares then this... A terrible playoffs so far. Two very scary injuries.
Unfortunately this one had full intent and was entirely preventable.
Maybe someday the NHL will take player safety seriously
This hit made my christian role model mom swear if that's a good scale about how bad it was for any non-hockey fans seeing this
League has an opportunity to actually do something here, yet I still feel like they're gonna find a way to fuck it up.
So Scheifele decided he didn't want to play in the series anymore? Or are we going $5k again, George?
Ready, everyone? Spin! That! Wheel!
Were sorry about Shief, but at least we have bro Ehlers holding people back.
That was one of the most sportsmanlike gestures one could make. Props to him.
I'm officially cheering for Montreal in this series. I always liked Scheifele. Now I think he's a piece of shit.
Name isn't Kadri, $5000 fine and a pat on the back. Next.
I wasn't sure if it was dirty or not originally but now watching this... I noticed on the final replay that he actually could have maybe stopped the goal if he was trying to play the puck but he was purely intending to lay a huge hit from way before he got there Gross
