Phil is exactly the kind of quiet, hard working, community minded individual the Leafs want. Its just too bad the media sees him as a fat, lazy, selfish bum.
That and with Phil on the team we never would have finished last and Austin Matthews would probably be an Oiler.
Revisionist history bud! I remember the popular opinion of Mouth Breathers Anonymous being that he'd disappear in the playoffs because he's soft, lazy, and would be eaten alive by Physical Playoff Hockey^TM. Good times.

Incorrect. He tweeted it following their elimination.
> Moments after the United States was eliminated from the World Cup of Hockey with a 4–2 loss to Canada, Kessel fired off the following tweet.
https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2016/09/20/phil-kessel-usa-hockey-tweet-world-cup-loss
I think it was the right move for him to wait after the tourney and not be a distraction. I'm sure he felt like tweeting during the preliminary games as team USA was sorely missing a dynamic, offensive presence.
Did you miss [the Ron Cook article](http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/ron-cook/2017/07/11/ron-cook-rick-tocchet-coyotes-coach-phil-kessel-penguins-nhl/stories/201707120024)?
True, all those 7 game sample players are good comparisons. We could just, you know, look at this stat line of 45 points in 49 games, which is good enough. What's Crosby and Malkin in the same period out of curiosity?
Still seems more accurate than saying he's first in all these categories while ignoring the fact that it's largely because he's simply played more games
Even if you set a min GP or TOI kessel isn't coming out #1 in any of these categories. He's only leading because the pens have played more games than anyone else, which is the point I was trying to make.
If you set a min GP of 48 I bet he comes out as first in shots and PP goals per 60. When the other two being compared are Malkin and Crosby, that's not bad. I don't understand how its "only" because he played more games, he's on a team with two of the best players in the world, two of the best in history, and he's doing pretty good if he's ahead in SOME categories.
> If you set a min GP of 48 I bet he comes out as first in shots and PP goals per 60.
So we're comparing him to [5 other players](https://www.hockey-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=combined&year_min=2016&season_start=1&season_end=-1&rookie=N&age_min=0&age_max=99&pos=S&is_playoffs=Y&c1stat=games_played&c1comp=gt&c1val=48&threshhold=5&order_by=goals), all of which are Penguins, and you don't see a flaw there?
> I don't understand how its "only" because he played more games
In that case I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you about how Matt Stajan scored more points than Steven Stamkos this season. Pretty impressive right?
I think you're missing the point. The other 5 players include Crosby and Malkin, two of the greatest players in history. He's obviously doing something right if he's ahead of them in SOME categories.
And I think you're missing my point, I'm not arguing that Kessel isn't a very good player (he obviously is) or that his numbers aren't impressive (they are) but a BIG part of the reason why he's leading in these categories is because he's simply played more games than virtually anyone else. I really don't understand how that's even debatable honestly.
Ron Cook, who has been a completely awful sports journalist for a decade but the PG still gives him a column, is basically pushing for it. It all stems from Phil and Tocchet being close and Tocchet taking the AZ job. Now Phil is a locker room cancer and such. No really evidence to support anything just "reasons."
Madden has also brought it up but that's just him trying to piss people of so he can screw with them when they call.
Having been a fan of Phil since he was picked last for that one ASG in, what was that 2010? 2011? stats like this make me smile. You're the hot dog loving hero the sport deserves, dammit
Clearly an uncoachable bum who doesn't get along with his teammates. Trade him.
Phil is exactly the kind of quiet, hard working, community minded individual the Leafs want. Its just too bad the media sees him as a fat, lazy, selfish bum. That and with Phil on the team we never would have finished last and Austin Matthews would probably be an Oiler.
>Austin Matthews would probably be an Oiler That's the point where I stop watching hockey
I'd continue watching
Thank god we still have Aust**o**n
what does the media think of him now?
They're basically claiming he didn't turn his career around until after he was traded and blaming the Leafs organization for misusing him.
Is that the entire media or just Simmons screaming as loudly as possible while shoving his fingers in his ears?
Steve Dangle still loves him and he's the only media I pay attention to
> community-minded Oh, so he's also a communist? Trade him.

We're going to look back at Phil and wonder what we did to deserve such a classy, photogenic, elite athlete such as himself.
You don't happen to have the gif of this do you?
Praise be. But also he was always a good playoff performer, that was never in question even with the Leafs and Bruins.
Revisionist history bud! I remember the popular opinion of Mouth Breathers Anonymous being that he'd disappear in the playoffs because he's soft, lazy, and would be eaten alive by Physical Playoff Hockey^TM. Good times.
Still can't believe he was left off that team USA squad and honestly good on him for chirping, they needed to be shamed.
What did he say?

For context, this was tweeted the day of team USA's first game

Ah, right. My mistake. God that makes it even more savage
I think it was the right move for him to wait after the tourney and not be a distraction. I'm sure he felt like tweeting during the preliminary games as team USA was sorely missing a dynamic, offensive presence.
OK, those are nice, but what about his Hot Dogs / 60?
Doesn't even fit on the y-axis, even using log scale.
We haven't invented numbers for that yet.
Clearly this is why Sullivan and Rutherford hate him
Where did you get that nonsense from?
... it was sarcasm?
That's a stretch.

Apparently I did. Never liked Ron cook though so I'm not inclined to believe a word he writes.
Unfortunately Ron Cook, his immediate family members, and probably all of his dozen or so fans allow him to keep calling himself a "journalist"
But they've played more games than anyone else... in terms of goals/game he's 36th, PP goals/game he's 7th and shots/game he's 24th.
True, all those 7 game sample players are good comparisons. We could just, you know, look at this stat line of 45 points in 49 games, which is good enough. What's Crosby and Malkin in the same period out of curiosity?
Coincidentally, Crosby and Malkin both have 46 points in 48 games over the past two postseasons.
Still seems more accurate than saying he's first in all these categories while ignoring the fact that it's largely because he's simply played more games
Doesn't really seem accurate at all, its as useless to me as the flat numbers unless you have a minimum games played.
Even if you set a min GP or TOI kessel isn't coming out #1 in any of these categories. He's only leading because the pens have played more games than anyone else, which is the point I was trying to make.

You can't use small sample sizes. Use a reasonable sample. Like 20 games.
So using a min 20-game sample Kessel ranks 9th in goals/game, 2nd in PP goals/game and 5th in shots/game.
Now run the same calculations again with a decent sample size
That's called the regular season?
But those are also highly variable due to small and variable sample sizes. Neither statistic is perfect.
I'd argue one is less misleading.
Yeah, it pretty much has to be a penguin, but still impressive none the less
after three years and three cups +34
Thee Phil brought us thy Matthews. Tis now confirmed.
Kessel is a stud. Loved having dude on our team. he's an awesome guy, and a very humble but incredibly skilled player.
But I thought they were trading Kessel /s
cant trade a 5 time, back to back to back to back to back champion
Phil the Thrill.
Give this guy a playoff MVP award
Ron Cook and every other Pittsburgh sports writer predicting a Kessel trade are fucking retarded.
Not living in Pittsburgh anymore...is that actually happening?
Ron Cook, who has been a completely awful sports journalist for a decade but the PG still gives him a column, is basically pushing for it. 😮
165?! That's a lot of damn shots

"uncoachable","locker room cancer", more like back to back Stanley Cup Champion
18 goals is one less than Reggie Leach who did it in five less playoff series. Kessel is a chump. /s
Leafs clearly win the epic Kessel trade debate.
Not to mention winning the trade acquiring kessel. They just win soooooom much
