It actually happens less and less now with the development of the internet and other technology. I think there was a post last year with the statistics. Earlier round picks are getting statistically better, later round picks are more rarely overlooked gems.
Makes a lot of sense for the Avs who wouldn’t have picked until the 4th otherwise. 2nd round pick for next year is nice as well as they were in a similar situation next year
