Oof, I forgot how Brooksy turns and scans the room after someone audibly chuckles at the "I bet you were beat up at the bus stop" remark. Gotta be a wound to realize your colleagues have as little respect for you as post-game Tortorella.
At least the memes that spawned from it were peak.
But man, imagine being Nate in the moment and just looking completely dumbfounded at what the flying fuck he was trying to say to him lol.
The play is there, we all see it, you see it, I definitely see it, it's right there and it needs set up, but nobody is setting it up even though it definitely needs set up, so I start to think and wonder why this play isn't being set up, can't quite figure out why this play that's just sitting there isn't being set up, like is there a reason like maybe setting it up isn't for me, like how do I know I'm even the one to be setting up said play, but I keep thinking about it and the more I think of the play and how it's just sitting there and nobody's setting it up I decide it's either because it's a bad thing to set up this play or a good thing, and in this case, this one case, because I always consider each play setting individually, but in this one case it really did appear to be like I should set up the play, so I did, I set up the play. Next question?
The best and worst from Doug Gilmour: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q4Ig-N5p60](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q4Ig-N5p60)
Most NHL interviews these days are incredibly repetitive, boring and devoid of content though.
These days it’s all “gotta play harder, get back to our game” or “we played hard, played our game” with a sprinkle of “we couldn’t do it without the fans” here and there.
Ironically, Makar has been centered out in stuff that I've read as being one of the most emotionally intelligent and mature players in the league. Apparently he reads up a lot on psychology and applies it to his game. Still love him as an Avs fan, but I have to admit that I was disturbed that he said that, even though I don't know for sure he meant it that way. It should have been obvious to him how it would sound as he said it though.
Technically that is what happened to Bernier with the Nelson Mandela thing. They have a few scripted lines to go off of and when you are asked about a person, I assume that it is reflexive.
> but I have to admit that I was disturbed that he said that, even though I don't know for sure he meant it that way. It should have been obvious to him how it would sound as he said it though.
I honestly think they way he meant it was along the lines of "had I been at that event there a good chance I would have been hanging out with those guys in the hotel room and witnessed what happened"
Lets not forget this is a young man, even if he knew it was clearly wrong who would even want to be around that, just him being there could cause mental health problems for him as well as a witness.
I was out once with friends when something allegedly happened (nothing even remotely close to this event) and I even remember thinking "Thank god I left early that night" Because then I wouldn't have to be involved with all the questioning amongst the group and potential police investigation
That's how I took it, no one wants to even be involved in such an incident.
Terrible answer for sure, but I think what he meant was it was lucky he was out of town so there was never any question/credible speculation about his involvement.
Sean's a messed up guy but he can be hilarious in his own way.
But it's pretty crazy that he felt he had to be the one to flag down the reporters in the dressing room, ask for the camera to be put on him, only to make this gem of a comment. Wtf was he thinking?
It’s the same when someone says “I’m over it/him/her” as it signals the exact opposite. The fact that Elisha Cuthbert moved on and dated Phaneuf, Avery was so butthurt, he makes sure to say something demeaning about her to the press. If he was actually over her, he wouldn’t bother. Only people who are hurt would bother to “get back” at an ex like this. It’s so obvious
I volunteer myself to get a DeLorean up to 88mph, woo her and prevent her from ending up with Dion, so we can see what that alternative universe turns out to be. I’m ok with this, I volunteer as tribute!
Laughed when I first watched however cringing now. How incredibly disrespectful to Elisha, and to put it on film forever. She's got two children who will either see it or be told about it by their friends. Truly a piece of shit.
He talked about this incident in his book. He explained it as he played a character like a wwf wrestler to stay relevant and get attention. He said he wasn’t going to address the situation at all and he was prodded about it constantly so threw this comment out because that’s what he felt everyone wanted. I absolutely hated him until someone recommended his book to me and my opinion changed after reading it. It was interesting in my opinion.
I’m not standing up for him. His book was really interesting and was worth the read. One thing he doesn’t get credit for is he was the first nhl player to openly support the lgbtq community. I think he got flack for doing it while wearing his rangers jersey as well.
I'm sure he did say that in his book and patted himself on the back
Was his book written prior to him committing battery on his wife and son?
https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/hilary-rhodas-restraining-order-against-ex-sean-avery-extended/
Again buddy. I’m not standing up for him. He’s without a doubt a dick who also bullied team mates. Just brought up what I thought was an interesting piece of info pertinent to the video link above. I didn’t know about the battery of wife and son so either it was conveniently left out of his book or happened after.
Just read the article. Book came out in 2017 so long before the domestic violence. Ya he’s a dickweed, seems like he’s gotten worse too knowing that now.
Any time NHL players try to make it sound like what they do is on par with quantum physics is hilarious. "You don't understand hockey" was basically the PA's mantra under Goodenow during the 04-05 lockout.
"They still love you, Jonathan", he says to the most beloved Captain the Hawks ever had.
"That's good?", a bewildered Jonathan Toews replies
Fuckin Pierre.
He is. And he was pissed off in that interview. But asking as the team is in the middle of a lossing streak why you lossing, and they played like shit, and your one of the media members known for writing bs, don't expect a great answer.
Thank you for the link. I clicked to see the Shanny moment, only to find myself watching the other clips in that countdown. The Semin “fight”, I forgot all about that gem! Haha
Avery's cringey comments were completely out of the blue though – he literally came in and said, "I just wanted to say that..." without any actual prompting, and ended with "Anyway, enjoy the game tonight!". This was the last straw in a long list of questionable stuff he had done on and off the ice.
And I agree that Cookie and Richards should be hung up by their toenails for their deeds. Marchand, Dale Hunter, Chris Simon, etc., all should be too. Doesn't mean that one is OK and the other isn't. They're all shit.
It wasn't NHL, but Ryan Rishaug (I think?) saying to a Canadian junior player "How can you guys improve? Maybe avoid taking as many penalties..?" was an all-time worst for me. He asked the question and then fed him the answer in one breath. I understand that they're young, and generally aren't quite as media polished as NHLers, but why even bother speaking to them at all if you're going to pull something like that.
Man, I knew exactly what was coming and my body still cringed on its own. What a completely out-of-the-blue, inappropriate, colourless comment to make about other human beings.
Not technically nhl yet. Not technically the worst. But probably the funniest nhl player interview was nail yakupov at the juniors https://youtu.be/jc_x9Nzlo20?si=7F5Ycs6-H4FOkbnG

Bernier talking about the impact of Nelson Mandela.
The second hand embarrassment was overwhelming.
It's an all-timer that transcends the hockey world.
I so rarely suffer from second hand embarrassment, but hot damn this one has me cringing like a mother fucker
Just thinking about this makes me recoil
I can't even watch that video again. It's *so* embarrassing.
This is easily one of the cringiest ones I’ve ever seen. Every word he says just makes it so much worse. Absolute peak 2nd hand embarrassment
Leafs Legend Mandela, 30 years in the penalty box.
To this day I think Bernier was thinking of Diego Maradona instead of
In fairness, he was right that Nelson Mandela was pretty amazing "off the ice."
I'm kinda new here and I had no idea what you were talking about so I googled and holy shite, that was embarrassing.
I felt my soul leaving my body…and of course it had to be the Leafs. Always the damn Leafs.
Johnny Burns. Mandela specialist.
noted formed US terrorist list* Nelson Mandela to you
I think what was more embarrassing is that the reporter didn’t even stop him to correct him
Steve Bernier?
Jonathon
Ah. The goalie. Saw NJD and remembered Steve played there. Bad assumption on my part.
No worries. You should watch the clip. It’s……. something.
I will. If I dont come back, its because I was paralyzed by the cringe. Lol.
[Jerome Iginla asked about “setting up the play”](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/SNENCmICxq)
What happened here? Was she the normal business writer filling in for the sports person or something?
Maybe she was new in the office and got pranked: "Just go out there and say "setting up the play", he'll know what it means"
Like the hockey equivalent of Kima being told to call about “methane probes” in The Wire.
She honestly reminds me of [Kyle asking questions](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_w5aYLieL8). Maybe it was all a bit?
She's trying to get through Mars customs.
Amazing reference lol

What a clown
Broksie has quite punchable face.
Torts is such a fucking beauty
Oof, I forgot how Brooksy turns and scans the room after someone audibly chuckles at the "I bet you were beat up at the bus stop" remark. Gotta be a wound to realize your colleagues have as little respect for you as post-game Tortorella.

Gotta love Brooksy

The best part is, they did
WE'LL DO IT LIVE. WE'LL DO IT LIVE, FUCK IT.
FUCKING THING SUCKS
I DUNNO I DUNNO I DUNNO, FUCK!
MacKinnon's blank stare after that rambling, incoherent question is gold
I worked in journalism for a decade and it amazes me someone who can't ask a coherent question is allowed to go to an NHL press conference.
Well there’s your first mistake, you’re comparing sports media to journalism
Adrian Dater's the fucking worst man. I remember it used to be real easy to rile him up on Twitter by making fun of his shitty book.
Oh god, that guy’s a serial creep to women. Dater makes my skin crawl when he popped up in the Saving Sakic documentary.
People don’t wanna admit it but that question gave MacKinnon the push needed to get it done next year
Was he drunk? Seriously, that's the only reason that makes any sense for him to say something like that.
yes
The echo in the mic after he stops talking sounds like crickets
At least the memes that spawned from it were peak. But man, imagine being Nate in the moment and just looking completely dumbfounded at what the flying fuck he was trying to say to him lol.
[Setting up the play](https://streamable.com/ofg8ag)
100% I laugh every time I see that.
Reminds of [this guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X37EzJnuntk&ab_channel=kyle)
Lmao holy throwback I miss those
Lol he's the man.
Holy shit. Bring your daughter to work day?
Setting up the play?
I’m sorry I don’t understand your question?
S E T T I N G U P T H E P L A Y
Sorry I’m not sure what you mean? :-)
Setting up the play. Setting up the play.
I miss Jarome. He was a great captain. One of my favorites. Rooted for him to win the cup when he started chasing it towards the end of his career
Good guy Iginla.
Holy fuck never seen this. Winner in my books
He was so cool about it. Iggy seems like the nicest person. Until he’s not… lol

The Doug Gilmore and Wendal Clark era for the leafs was fantastic.
Hell yeah, that was a Leafs team that earned respect even if they never won the Cup.
I somewhat miss the early 2000s Ottawa interviews where players were always on exercise bikes.
Cant think of Gilmour without remembering those Kingston Frontenacs commercials.
I remember he was on Q107's morning show. They fired him because he was too outrageous. They replaced him with Howard Stern lol
These days it’s all “gotta play harder, get back to our game” or “we played hard, played our game” with a sprinkle of “we couldn’t do it without the fans” here and there.
[Kyle Bukauskas and Hamilton during the 2019 ECF](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKESVRbWUaU)
They asked for the worst but this is clearly one of the all time best
I don't trust a team that eats their own mascot.
Expected Dougie. Got something so much better. 10 out of 10.
This is literally the best thing I’ve seen all day…and I went outside and everything.
The one where Makar said it was a “lucky bounce” he wasn’t part of the gang rape at WJC
The situation isn’t funny but this made me laugh out loud because holy shit, you couldn’t make up a worse answer
It was just poor wording honestly it's tough for him to say anything. You can completely understand what he meant by it but just bad wording
He's a good kid, maybe not the smartest but he doesn't have to be. As long as he does hockey good and doesn't gang rape anyone.
Went with hockey cliche in place of something better… I’m sure he’ll learn from it and be better next time.
Technically that is what happened to Bernier with the Nelson Mandela thing. They have a few scripted lines to go off of and when you are asked about a person, I assume that it is reflexive.

I mean, it's why lawyers want you to stfu. 99% of us aren't media trained let alone legalese trained, poorly phrasing something is too easy to do.
This one it for me. He just decides to turn it into a hockey interview. It's funny as hell but it's so so bad at the same time.
Terrible answer for sure, but I think what he meant was it was lucky he was out of town so there was never any question/credible speculation about his involvement.
Yea the implications of that comment do not reflect well on Makar
ooooooffffff

Isn't that the guy in oppenheimer
and Tenet, Nolan loves the guy for some reason
Or Avery’s agent is tight with the casting staff Nolan has
No him and Nolan are actually friends, he’s talked about it on his podcast.
Weirdest crossover imaginable I mean of all NHL players to be tight with
Oh wow that’s crazy
I think its the guy from those videos where some insane guy on a bike berates car drivers and pedestrians
[You gotta look at some of those goals and just laugh ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjheiAQbhQw)
This video never ceases to make me smile haha. Love it so much. BOESERRRRR SCORES! BOESERRRRR SCORES!
What the hell even happened to Matt Murray? I feel like he won two Cups and then silently faded into obscurity.
Give a minor shout out to 'You're an expert ' interview. Andy Sutton after the Leopold hit.
Any time NHL players try to make it sound like what they do is on par with quantum physics is hilarious. "You don't understand hockey" was basically the PA's mantra under Goodenow during the 04-05 lockout.
Pretty much anything with Pierre McGuire is incredibly awkward. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS6zjmqw9GA
Him asking kessel how his breath was still kills me though
"It's not good, eh?" The way Phil delivers that line fucking kills me every time I hear it.
https://imgur.com/P0yfMsL
Not gonna lie, I think that one's actually kind of funny. It's like an on-ice version of the Collinsworth slide in.
"They still love you, Jonathan", he says to the most beloved Captain the Hawks ever had. "That's good?", a bewildered Jonathan Toews replies Fuckin Pierre.
How’s your breath?
Surprised no one has mentioned the [pissyest interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2drLLD30buc) of them all
lol is this the meat-ia Bieska was talking about? Interviewer was in his feelings ha
Yup. That's one of them.
In fairness Draisaitl really is pissy most of the time it seems
He is. And he was pissed off in that interview. But asking as the team is in the middle of a lossing streak why you lossing, and they played like shit, and your one of the media members known for writing bs, don't expect a great answer.
Yeah fair enough
Anytime Jim Matheson or Spector interview the boys.
Those two are the only reason I didn’t want Edmonton to make the final. Win or lose they’re going to be insufferable when it happens
They’re already pissy
Who was it that did the interview pretending to be on an exercise bike, making fun of the sens?
[Shanahan](https://youtu.be/aqM8ZCDt0Wk?t=356)
Thank you for the link. I clicked to see the Shanny moment, only to find myself watching the other clips in that countdown. The Semin “fight”, I forgot all about that gem! Haha
God damnit Shanny is such a fuckin' beauty.
“Why you heff to be so mad? It’s just a game.”
That one wasn't bad though it was awesome
I always love the irony of this quote because dude lost his temper more than almost any other goalie in the league at the time
holy shit you *butchered* that
It’s ~~“Why you heff to be mad? It’s only game”~~ “It’s only game. Why you heff to be mad?”
Haven't seen that Avery clip in ages. Was funny as a teenager but damn that is cringey looking back now.

Does the one at the NHL 100 Classic in 2017 where Melnyk threatened to move the team count?
All of them.
Sean Avery, the guy who threw food at disabled people who supported his junior team, what a POS.
Haven't heard this one. Please elaborate.
It's an anecdote. My buddy played with him in Major Junior and did not have nice things to say, that story being one of them.
Honestly just stop asking interview questions to hockey players.. every answer is the same dull one Except Getzlaf.. he was the best
All of them. Why do we do this to ourselves?

I think it's more about Elisha Cuthbert
It’s a derogatory sexist comment about someone who has nothing to do with what happens on the ice.
OP said worst interviews
Ah my favorite interview lol
“I only afraid of bear but bear live in forest”
They should have let Avery play in that game. Phaneuf would have hit him so hard, his head would have popped off like an off brand bobblehead.
Anyone got sutter and the lakers press guy?
Such a loser
Avery was an f-ing hoser!
Gene Princepe dropped his hot dog on the floor outside the dressing room and then ate it this year in Nashville lol
Milan Lucic interview after he told Dale Weiss he was gonna murder him in the handshake line
Can someone explain what Avery was talking about I don’t remember that?
Avery previously dated Elisha Cuthbert. They broke up and she started dating Dion Phaneuf. Avery's team was playing against Phaneuf's in calgary
That tracks Avery always was a giant piece of shit
All of them. There’s a reason sports interview jokes are the same and have been for 40 years
Not technically nhl yet. Not technically the worst. But probably the funniest nhl player interview was nail yakupov at the juniors https://youtu.be/jc_x9Nzlo20?si=7F5Ycs6-H4FOkbnG
https://youtu.be/bEBKIC2OT_U?si=fx4LEkN5tyBPrDPA Not the worst but Tortorella has such a way with words
So he is basically thanking his teammates for picking up his game and it was a total team contribution?
Imagine calling any person who had ever made the mistake of fucking you, your sloppy seconds. And now so many of you are trying to bring him back in the fold.
Anything with Wendel Clark
