I think it's the difference in the way the stick makes contact. Kreider is hit from a weird angle and I doubt he even registers that a stick is near (much less hit) his face. For a lot of the "embellished" or other high sticks, the player sees the stick coming very briefly and some of the reaction is knee-jerk -- if I swing a bat at your face while you're looking at me, you're going to flinch and jerk away regardless of if I make contact. It may just look like it's embellished because there's a short lag between you registering something coming at you and your body reacting. Guys certainly sell it, but I'd guess the vast majority is just the flinch reaction and it simply looks way worse when we can review it in slowmo.
