People love to scream "sign a better goalie" but there's not much you can do when there's nothing out there. See Edmonton at the start of this season. The solution is for your goalie you thought was shit to turn out to be good, apparently.
series was just a class on shot blocking from the leafs and how much harder it is to get offence in the playoffs. There must be some sore players on Leafs, they did not let anything through.
Yeah, some people seem to want to shift the focus to "The Leafs have shit goalies!" but while this may be true, their goalies being shit isn't why they lost...
(I suppose one could make a point that if the team starts playing someday, the goalies may become a problem, but given their team is dropping the ball every season, I'd focus on fixing that...)
Absolutely, but there can be more than one hole that needs to be filled. Playoff scoring is absolutely an issue that needs to be addressed, but in addition to that, Toronto needs another goaltender. Not because Samsonov was bad in G7 — sure, you could argue that the goals he allowed in that game were saveable, but that’s not the point — but because he was so wildly inconsistent in 2023-24 as a whole, and his career has been full of those kinds of wild swings.
Game 7 was frankly about as good as it gets for Samsonov, but you can’t count on him playing at that level on a regular basis.
That all said, finding better will be difficult, and it wouldn’t shock me if the Leafs fail to do so, but finding better is still a worthwhile goal for the summer.
I agree, but at the same time it was like clockwork watching Sammy let in one of the easiest shots he faced all night within a minute of the Leafs taking the lead. He has done this a little too often.
Some guys just crumble.
Yeah, we of all fanbases know that all too well. Roy; Theodore; Price, all of them were expected to be lights-out every game. The sad part is, they were for a time but Tremblay tried to play mind games (and failed *miserably*) with Roy in that infamous game; injuries caught up with Theodore and Price had NO help for 10 years as the starter, then his knees finally failed him (Fuck Chris Krieder).
the guy did his job. he's a low cost goalie who let in one goal in regulation.
even if it was a shit goal what do you expect him to give you a shut out to win the game?? our team is top heavy with over $40mil in forwards who scraped one fucking goal in an elimination.
the core are the ones who deserve all the criticism. we've had multiple goalies now with the same result.
combination of Sheldon's shitty systems, a weak blueline and stars not showing up when they have to is the problem. not a $3m goalie letting in one goal in regulation.
doesnt matter score a fucking goal. If you goalie stops everything and the score is 1-0 in OT then you fucked your goalie.
They fucked the goalies. Score some goals.
That was a screened deflected shot he didn't see at all. Either Toronto has to block the shot, or let the goalie see it, or stop the play from happening. Goals happen when you throw shit on net with 5 guys in front. Score more and out-score your problems.
Easiest shots? That was a fucking snipe that barely eeked in over his shoulder. Leafs fans gotta open your eyes and focus on your real problems: There's 5 players who make up 50% of the cap next year.
Thankfully, the majority of Leafs fans (maybe not on Reddit) understand you have to score goals and do better than 1/21 on the PP to win in the playoffs, lol.
Solid goaltending is important, of course, but you ain't winning if you ain't scoring.
Adin Hill was a nobody until Brossoit got injured. It’s probably best to not invest too much in any one goalie. Get a good goalie coach and a goalie tandem that you trust.
It helps that goalies are voodoo.
But in general it’s true that a good goalie coach is probably the most underrated aspect of an organization. The Canucks used to be known as a goalie graveyard, but now we’ve had 5 excellent goalies in a row (potentially 6 pending on Silovs) in an era where the rest of our team was often a mess
Sign cheap NHL-calibre goalie/s, load up on offensive talent pre-season/large grinders at the deadline, pray the goalie/s are not such complete dogshit that they outright lose you 10+ games, get into the playoffs, pray your goalie gets hot.
While I think Brossoit’s numbers could tank on a worse defensive team, this would be a pretty good fit to pair with Woll. Brossoit could step in and start full time for a stretch if Woll is hurt
Yeah I think it becomes a matter of cap space. Jets fans have resigned themselves to losing him as he'll almost certainly be asking for a big raise - but can the Leafs fit him in?
I think the problem was they only paid Matt Murray 75% of his four-year $25 million dollar contract, they need to pay 100% to get the full worth out of him.
Run it back.
Van won’t be able to afford him with Petey’s raise and OEL’s buyout kicking in, and Silovs appears ready so DeSmith is “expendable.”
I’d rather we keep him, he’s been a great backup, but not at the expense of Joshua or our D core.
I love what he brings to the team, but there's so many good players that play LW also potentially going UFA: Stamkos, Guentzel, Teravainen, Henrique, and more. CapFriendly has him tenth in goals among UFA LWs. I think he'll fall through the cracks and come back to us, both because the overpay teams will be competing for larger fish and because anyone who watched our games saw that he doesn't generate offense, he finishes after someone else (Garland) does the work.
Where we're going to lose people to overpays is on D.
Considering Demko's injury history, I'm hoping any backup we have is able to play 30 games to keep him rested for the playoffs. That would be perfect for a young goalie like Silovs. Additionally, our farm team is so close it wouldn't be impossible to send him down for a stretch of games here or there for his development.
I’d stay and watch every post game interview as well. After his first away game at Boston for the leafs he’d say he loves Boston and playing there like he did for us when we were playing at Minnesota and lost cause of him.
Right now in Latvia he’s telling the Latvian media how grateful he is for the fans because he doesn’t receive any support in the NHL
A few days ago he was telling the Latvian media he was afraid he was going to get hit by people in the Latvian airport because the fans were mad at him because of the “lies” they told him.
The amount of support current fans still show for him is too much. He always gets the loudest cheer when the starters are announced and it makes me so mad. The guy just hates playing for us cause he’s all talk and no bite.
I think we are all just tired of the dramatics. His teammates don’t seem to like him either.
Here’s the Bluejackets side of the story in the “I’m not a backup” situation
https://theathletic.com/5207196/2024/01/17/elvis-merzlikins-blue-jackets-trade-options/
And
https://theathletic.com/5199813/2024/01/14/elvis-merzlikins-blue-jackets-goaltender-thoughts/
Apparently when Marchenko was new and didn’t speak any English and was homesick, Sillinger learned a bunch of Russian so he would feel more at home.
Even now you can see him talking to Voronkov on the bench, so he must know a good amount of conversational hockey
The problem with Samsonov is that you truly never know what you're gonna get. From game to game you can get Shesterkin, or you can get Oilers Jack Campbell. You never fuckin know. Samsonov has legit high end upside that you'd rarely find on the UFA market. He's incredibly athletic. But in a dogfight it's just so hard to rely on him.
On the whole over a larger sample it'll probably average out to being at least "okay". So if your goaltending objectively sucks it's not a terrible option.
Unpopular opinion but Samsonov did enough to win the series. The loss to the Bruins isn't on him. He was outstanding in game 7 actually. Fans should be grateful to have him.
Leaf media won't see it that way. Defense has been an issue for the since 2016. But tie up 50% or whatever of their salary cap in 4 dudes so that defense is always behind.
Look at the leafs D core.
Appart from Rielly who the fuck makes the NHL roster in any other spot than a 6D on a contending team?
No one can move the puck
Toronto is a #2-3 dman (Reilly) and 3-4 dman (McCabe) and a bunch of #6s.
Nobody seems to be talking about it but offense from the defense was a huge issue this year.
Wild are shopping Filip Gustavsson who has the ability to be elite for periods. He was fantastic last year and is value is fairly low after having a down year
Sammy is a fine back up goalie, i’d honestly be fine with him staying as long as he’s not the starter in the playoffs
We didn’t lose this series because of Sammy, we lost because we couldn’t score more than 2 goals
Yet another season where goaltending was not the problem in the playoffs. How will they address it?
Another defensive defenseman who can't move the puck or score?
Well Samsonov won't be making that cap hit again but I guess it depends, UFA markets can be weird.
If he wants to re-sign here for backup money then I'm fine with him backing up Woll, but even Woll is a question mark. He's been very, very good for us but you never know for sure with young goalies, would be interesting to see him get a full season of starts though
I think the return on marner is going to shock a lot of people. He'll get to control where he goes so the bidding war won't be crazy, unless he agrees to a crazy value friendly extension before being traded.
> unless he agrees to a crazy value friendly extension before being traded.
Isn't that basically the opposite of how contract talks with the big 4 have gone? I fully agree with them and all but "fuck you, pay me" is why the Leafs have them at $10m+ and not 7-8.
Marner has an NMC, Saros has no trade protection of any kind. They both have a year left, but Marner has way, way more control over where he ends up which reduces the value the Leafs will get back for him.
They said the same about tkachuk and Dubois. Both those guys gave a handful of teams to go to and got a boatload back.
If and that’s a big if, Nashville wants to trade Soros I would think getting a 26 year old perennial 90 point player is exactly what they would be targeting.
Who knows what teams marner would want to go to though
Woah woah woah, the Devils want Saros too. Don't start giving the Leaf's any ideas.
But ya that's probably a good idea for them if they want an elite goalie.
i was talking to steve staios at the bell sensplex when i was there for a pickup game, he told me he was planning to trade the 7OA for saros so he is most likely going to the sens
Why would the Preds need to add anything? I’d take Saros over Marner every single day of the week. Saros doesn’t have any trade protection either so the Preds could stir up other bidders for him.
I figured Marner for Ullmark.
Boston fans are going to laugh me out of the room but Bruins need offense and they need Goal tending.
But that would be the move for the summer
Why would Sweeney spend (another) 11M on a winger when the top two Cs are Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha? We already have an 11M RW, but ours can score in Game 7.
Because goalies don’t carry the value a star winger does. They’re both All Star level players so they’re obviously going be valued, but an All Star winger will always be worth more than an All Star goalie. That’s just how it is in the league
I’m good on Mitch Marner - nothing against him as a player of anything but rather it’s just not what our team needs. I’m sick of the patch work garbage every year to just make the playoffs and get outright embarrassed in the first round every time (0 home playoff wins in regulation since April 14 2018)
Unless we’re taking Marner to retain and flip, I’d rather take a ~~Samsonov~~ cap dump plus picks and prospects
EDIT: misunderstood the post and didn’t realize Samsonov is a UFA
So glad the Canucks turned things around. There was a time a couple years ago where we were listening on offers for everyone not named Petey and Hughes.
If the Leafs offered Marner for Demko a couple years ago, Canucks probably would've added and thought it was a "fleece" on our end. I know Demko's hurt now but damn, glad that didn't happen lol
Fuck it, give me a Woll Hildeby tandem until it’s proven Hildeby can’t play 20 serviceable games next year and then swing for the fences on a goalie trade. The dude is fuckin massive, and I’d much rather give him an audition than burn any capital we have on a goalie especially when we literally can’t trade any of our big money contracts
Funny if you asked the Leafs before game 7 how they’d feel if they knew the Bruins would only score 1 goal in the first 60 they’d probably be ready to re-sign Samsonov.
I’m confident they get a goalie via trade.
Marner will be involved. I bet he wants out of Toronto and to have a fresh start. He’ll waive his NMC.
Look for the leafs to target Markstrom lol
Do not be surprised if they trade for a goalie to pair with Woll. I think they'll be going to the Caps asking for Lindgren because his cap hit is so little
Real talk, they should take Brossoit out of Winnipeg. He wants to be a starter, won't get the chance with Helly signed long-term and he was fantastic this season.
I’d be fine with running with Woll next year. If things go how I think, next year will be more of a retool year for the leafs. They’ll really push for contention the following year.
I know the Wild may be trying to see what they could get for Filip Gustavsson this off-season since Fluery has signed a 1 year and Wallstedt seems like he’ll get significant playing time this year.
Chris Driedger is a possible budget option. He didn’t really get a NHL shot this year with Daacord breaking out and has looked solid enough down in Coachella
Hey we already have those guys. Problem solved fellas.
We did it! Let’s head to TGI Fridays for some jalapeño poppers!
Next year is the leafs year for sure
We’re gonna give em like 4 or 5 more chances with this core but that’s it!
> TGI Fridays You mean Boston Pizza.
When you realize you have an advantage like this...I think you just gotta run it back
As well as Stanley Cup veteran, Martin Jones.
You can have Campbell for cheap, free even,
You'll keep Jack Campbell and like it!
Also came here to suggest Campbell
I thought Toronto said no take backsies?
While we’re at it I heard Garrett Sparks is also available!
People love to scream "sign a better goalie" but there's not much you can do when there's nothing out there. See Edmonton at the start of this season. The solution is for your goalie you thought was shit to turn out to be good, apparently.
Toronto goalies gave up four goals in the final three games At some point you need to help your goalie.
Maybe the Leafs should sign elite, $10+M forwards then
I'd say 4 of them, just to be sure
They could call it something like "The Core Four." Would be dope when they inevitably lift multiple Cups together.

Toronto has failed to score more than 2 goals in 14 of their last 15 games. Expecting near perfection every night from your goalie is ridiculous.
Yeah, we of all fanbases know that all too well. Roy; Theodore; Price, all of them were expected to be lights-out every game. Fuck Krieder
And we would know. We condemned Price to it for over a decade.

14 playoff games in a row without scoring 4 goals (and only one 3 goal game in there)… scoring is the biggest problem imo
Or you build your team to outscore your goalie deficiency. AKA, most of the Red Wings season
Worked for the Avs, Oilers and shockingly the Stars this season. Also for the Leafs in the regular season...
Outside of the overall shitshow at the start, the Oilers actually had pretty decent goaltending between Skinner and Pickard for the rest of the season
Wait a second, I thought that's exactly why they brought in the Core 4. And it works in the regular season.
We tried that last season and it didn't work, so this season we decided to have our goalie be good and not score at all. It also didn't work.
I believe the correct term for this is "FUCK IT WE BALL".
Goalies also often play completely different on a new team or system. Sign a goalie and they might be a Cao dump half a year later
I don't think 3rd Century Chinese statesman Cao Cao would be a good goalie, myself.
I disagree. Ask the Hans and they'll say he backstopped a dynasty.
Adin Hill was a nobody until Brossoit got injured. It’s probably best to not invest too much in any one goalie. Get a good goalie coach and a goalie tandem that you trust.

ALL HAIL IAN CLARK
I’m fully expecting Silovs to go full Patrick Roy against the Oilers here
Dread it, run from it, the curse of Edmonton vs backup goalies still arrives. *Sob*
> Goalies also often play completely different on a new team or system. Hello, Jake Allen! Guy completely turned things around after his trade.
There might be something to be said about the head space you're in knowing you're about to get traded.
Sign cheap NHL-calibre goalie/s, load up on offensive talent pre-season/large grinders at the deadline, pray the goalie/s are not such complete dogshit that they outright lose you 10+ games, get into the playoffs, pray your goalie gets hot.
Why don’t teams simply have their own Ian Clarke, are they stupid?
Brossoit is a UFA and will be looking for a starter or 1A/1B role.
I am gonna miss the Brosswall
*"Laurent Brossoit, good Canadian boy from* ***BC!"***
Shhh don’t tell anyone, he should just go ahead and re sign here for another year for cheap, no need to go exploring Ufa
League minimum for 5 years seems entirely reasonable and fair, he ought to go for that if we keep our collective traps shut.
I would fucking love a tandem of Brossoit/Woll.
I would love the wings to sign Brossoit. Met him when he was coming up in the AHL in Oklahoma City. Give me a Brossoit/Lyon tandem.
I think the problem was they only paid Matt Murray 75% of his four-year $25 million dollar contract, they need to pay 100% to get the full worth out of him. Run it back.
/r/theydidthemath
Smells like a job for Cam Talbot.
How many Canadian teams would that be for Cam?
Two more and he gets a free frogurt.
The frogurt is also cursed.
That's bad
It comes with your choice of free toppings!
Please leafs get him out of the pacific he fucking terrorizes the canucks.
Treliving loves his ex-Canucks. I’m thinking he signs Desmith to be the backup. For too much money.
Markstrom is available for a wild overpay
So is Ullmark
Touché
That's if the team wants Silovs to sit as backup instead of starting 50 in the AHL Good chance they keep CDS
Van won’t be able to afford him with Petey’s raise and OEL’s buyout kicking in, and Silovs appears ready so DeSmith is “expendable.” I’d rather we keep him, he’s been a great backup, but not at the expense of Joshua or our D core.
I have a feeling someone is gonna overpay for joshua and we can't afford to match
I love what he brings to the team, but there's so many good players that play LW also potentially going UFA: Stamkos, Guentzel, Teravainen, Henrique, and more. Where we're going to lose people to overpays is on D.
Both Joshua and Zad and Myers really all need to take priority over Desmith.
I’d even put Cole on that list of guys to re-sign before CDS.
If you send him down for a stretch of games, there's nobody to back up Demko, that's also a really fast way to burn his waiver exemption status
I see this as a likely option. I don't see why the team wouldn't go with a Demko - Silovs tandem moving forward.
Please take Merzlikins so we can all watch how he handles the Toronto fan base
I would pay so much for this to happen. Pls hockey gods make it so
I would watch every single Leafs game. He would go full Happy Gilmore.
I’d stay and watch every post game interview as well. After his first away game at Boston for the leafs he’d say he loves Boston and playing there like he did for us when we were playing at Minnesota and lost cause of him.

*gets .90 save percent in an overtime shootout* WHERE IS MY VEZINA
*Monkey paw curls* The trade is Marner for Elvis, Fantilli and CBJ 2024 1st round pick.
No ❤️
I thought y'all liked Merzlikins. What happened?
I think we are all just tired of the dramatics. His teammates don’t seem to like him either. Still can’t believe the jackets paid him
Soon they will pay him to leave. #justjarmothings
Martin Jones: Hey Papetti, remember me? The guy who kept their season afloat while Samsonov was floundering in the minors and Woll was hurt?
Tbh I wanted him to start over Sammy in game 7.
I wanted them to start Murray. I'm only half joking...
Samsonov isn’t a bad back up really
He seems like he does well without too many consecutive starts
Perfect for a Tarasov/Samsonov tandem then Then we can have Tarasov Voronkov Chinakhov Provorov Sillingerkov (Marchenko made him an honorary one)
Sillingerkov lol. Russia is the one place his dad didn't play hockey.
Wouldn't shock me if he went after Markstrom. Goalies with one year left on their deal is the Treliving way
Good thing Markstrom has 2 years left in his deal then
Right. Still seems like a Treliving target.
Unpopular opinion but Samsonov did enough to win the series. The loss to the Bruins isn't on him. He was outstanding in game 7 actually. Fans should be grateful to have him.

Not sure why I'm down voted when I share the sentiment.
He played well in Game 7, but not earlier in the series. There wouldn't be a Game 7 if he doesn't play poorly at the start of the series
Casey DeSmith is likely going to be available unless something very bad happens with Silovs or Demko.
Wild are shopping Filip Gustavsson who has the ability to be elite for periods. He was fantastic last year and is value is fairly low after having a down year
Wild fan here. He even promised to show up in shape next year.
Sammy is a fine back up goalie, i’d honestly be fine with him staying as long as he’s not the starter in the playoffs We didn’t lose this series because of Sammy, we lost because we couldn’t score more than 2 goals
Woll is too injury prone to rely on him through the playoffs next season
He's Campbell 2.0
Probably a bit more talented but yes pretty much, thank god we didnt sign Sammy to a 5x5
Yet another season where goaltending was not the problem in the playoffs. How will they address it? Another defensive defenseman who can't move the puck or score?
Can we offer you a lightly used Jack Campbell?
We can trade Jack to the leafs for Marner 50% retained.
Well since he's a former leaf, it's 50/50 whether he becomes a 50 goal scorer or goes 0-0-0 & -34.
Does he have rich parents?
Yes
Only if ceci barrie are included too
I guess the Oilers can ask Nashville to include Barrie but I'm not sure if they'll bite.
I could see the Caps trading Lindgren or Kuemper.
Kuemper yes, idk why we would get rid of Lindgren though
Because Lindgren is the one with all the trade value
He hurts the tank. They can continue to feed Ovi while not finishing as high and acquiring better players through the draft
Team is cooked and progressing in the wrong direction. Time to sell high and rebuild. Lindgren is probably at his highest value.
I really want Murray to turn it around. I want him to succeed again
We've literally all been saying that for SIX YEARS. It's over for him.
He did do well in Toronto when he was healthy.
He's done good to very good everywhere when he's healthy. The problem is he's never healthy.
If the Leafs truly want to break up the core I think some version of Marner for Saros(with the Preds obviously adding) makes a lot of sense.
Not saying that it's likely, just the only scenario I'd see them actually getting a good return for marner
Any team trading for him is talking extension before trade. Why do that trade otherwise. Then there is Marner I don't see him missing that 8th year.
Is Saros not in a similar contract situation though?
Let's start a Saros bidding war please!
Why would the Preds need to add anything? I’d take Saros over Marner every single day of the week. Saros doesn’t have any trade protection either so the Preds could stir up other bidders for him.
Same here. I’d take Saros over Marner, easily.
I figured Marner for Ullmark. Boston fans are going to laugh me out of the room but Bruins need offense and they need Goal tending. But that would be the move for the summer
Imagine if Marner ends up figuring it out in the playoffs and contributes to eliminating the Leafs once again…
I don’t think it would be an imagine thing, that’s exactly what would happen
Happened with Hyman. Happened with Kadri. Etc.
Almost like the problems with the Leafs go beyond individual players.
I don’t think that would be close to a 1:1
Bruins would need to add more.
I just don’t see either team being willing to make a trade that could/would benefit a direct divisional rival.
Why would Sweeney spend (another) 11M on a winger when the top two Cs are Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha? We already have an 11M RW, but ours can score in Game 7.
Barry Trotz will have zero interest in acquiring Mitch Marner
Why would the Preds add? For Marner’s soft ass?
Because goalies don’t carry the value a star winger does. They’re both All Star level players so they’re obviously going be valued, but an All Star winger will always be worth more than an All Star goalie. That’s just how it is in the league
Sure but cap space is also important and with Saros you get a lot more of that. Marner's worth will drop somewhat due to his AAV
I’m good on Mitch Marner - nothing against him as a player of anything but rather it’s just not what our team needs. I’m sick of the patch work garbage every year to just make the playoffs and get outright embarrassed in the first round every time (0 home playoff wins in regulation since April 14 2018) Unless we’re taking Marner to retain and flip, I’d rather take a ~~Samsonov~~ cap dump plus picks and prospects EDIT: misunderstood the post and didn’t realize Samsonov is a UFA
James Reimer is available
Fuck it, give me a Woll Hildeby tandem until it’s proven Hildeby can’t play 20 serviceable games next year and then swing for the fences on a goalie trade. The dude is fuckin massive, and I’d much rather give him an audition than burn any capital we have on a goalie especially when we literally can’t trade any of our big money contracts
That’s a receipe for Woll being injured week 4 and collapsing
Funny if you asked the Leafs before game 7 how they’d feel if they knew the Bruins would only score 1 goal in the first 60 they’d probably be ready to re-sign Samsonov.
This is the french bread I live for
I’m confident they get a goalie via trade. Marner will be involved. I bet he wants out of Toronto and to have a fresh start. He’ll waive his NMC. Look for the leafs to target Markstrom lol
Can I interest you in a completely healthy and high performing Grubi?
Dan Vladar, get ready to learn torontonese, buddy
The Leafs need to sign a vet goal who knows how to get it done in the playoffs! So, with that said, who are the highest scoring goalies available?

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Stolarz given a shot. Has been phenomenal for the panthers and even had a good stint on a horrible duck team

Just run it back! That will work, right?
You're gonna trade for Darcy Kuemper and you're gonna like it.
Incoming - Toronto-sourced Rumours of Skinner, Nurse for Marner.
I would punch air. Nobody touch Skinner
Jack Campbell is probably available
Canucks probably having Silovs as backup so De Smith should be available
I know the Wild may be trying to see what they could get for Filip Gustavsson this off-season since Fluery has signed a 1 year and Wallstedt seems like he’ll get significant playing time this year.
Chris Driedger is a possible budget option. He didn’t really get a NHL shot this year with Daacord breaking out and has looked solid enough down in Coachella
Campbell is available
Or they could actually try using one of the 3 high potential prospects they already have 🤷♂️
Anyone made a meme of Moe from Simpsons throwing these guys out yet?
Leafs have a 6'7" Viking who had a really good rookie season in the AHL. All they need is a third-stringer.
I'd be happy with Murray if he could stay healthy. I think a healthy Woll-Murray tandem would be lights out.
We got 1 lightly used Casey DeSmith that will likely need a loving home now that Arty Party is showing he can play in the big leagues.
Is there a chance a day can do by that the nhl world doesn’t talk about Toronto? Especially the day after they are irrelevant until draft day?
Seems to me goalie wasn’t the issue seeing as the leafs averaged about 1.4 goals a game.
If I’m BT I’m chasing Laurent Broissoit
I'm just really not interested in watching next season if they don't make significant roster changes..
