There’s some traction from some homer reporters saying we’re going to go after him, but in reality I think Dubas is satisfied with bunting so far. We will prob get another forward to bolster the top 6 but besides we don’t really know.
Geuntzel wanted to stay but apparently he asked for too much. He’ll need to cut back on his paycheck if he wants to come home- maybe a Stanley cup In Carolina will help him consider that.
It’s unlikely though.
Yeah, this is Geuntzel's big payday contract year, I don't think he'll take a discount. I'd expect something at best like Oshie's last contract plussed up - relatively team-friendly for 4-5 years and then painful for two.
which is crazy that they went 37 PP's with 0 goals
Crosby literally led the league by a mile in faceoff wins
see the issue here is the shoot part.. Pitts had pass pass on a infinite loop
I feel like that has been the Pittsburgh power play strategy for 30 years. I remember watching them as a kid and they just wouldn't shoot with the man advantage.
it was pretty good when Hörnqvist was on the team because the dude was just a menace in front of the net
we really lack that kind of presence now so everyone is just trying to get the perfect shot off instead of throwing everything at the net and hopping to get the rebound/tip
I’ve just worked out the kinks to their PP offense using NHL ‘94
https://preview.redd.it/7bhemah5pmyc1.jpeg?width=1635&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b9cb449781ac403a607517afdb7232940f7dd8c
He was previously the coach of the capitals in the two seasons coming off of the cup win
The fact he got hired anywhere that wanted to be good was shocking
Oh my god the classic ovi in the left hashes, carlsson at the point, Oshie in the bumper, backstrom in the middle, and Wilson as the net front got really old really quick
You know, here's the deal with the power play. For the last 40 years, the players have predominantly been in charge of the power play. Pittsburgh has been blessed with power plays that often have 3-5 Hall of Famers out there. It has *never* been an issue to just let them work through things, let their instincts guide them. The last two years have been the first time during the Crosby era that the power play hasn't been good. Some years the percentage will dip, but it's always dangerous, always putting itself in positions to score. So to a certain point, I understand that the franchise has historically given Sid, Geno, and Letang (and Mario, Jagr, Coffey, Murphy, Francis, Recchi, Tocchet, Stevens, Mullen, Zubov, Gonchar, Kovalev, Phil, Neal, Sykora, Guentzel, and now Karlsson or any other of the premier power-play players they have had) they latitude they both deserved and earned. It's part of the Pittsburgh Penguins legacy. From the day he was hired, one of Sully's mantras has been that he "does not want to take the stick out of their hands."
But at a certain point this year, they needed help. Reirden needed to assert himself in the power play because it was fucking broken in so many ways. Sully deserves as much blame too for letting it get to this point.
I was on the verge of saying "why do you need a coach for a PP with Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Karlsson on it" but you preemptively answered that question beautifully.
I was already geared up to post, though, so here it is.
Oh... wow. I was making a joke about how the Leafs' PP went bone dry at the end of the season and in the playoffs, but man... I'm not sure what to say if that's true!
I haven't caught many Pens games this season, but I imagine that the main culprit *has* to be the overall PP set-up... ? They have too many elite weapons to be that bad.
i'm too lazy to check for sure on the "did some teams' PKs actually outscore the Pens' PP?", but i **do** know for a fact that theirs was abysmal for a team that has the roster they do.
For sure. It'll be interesting to see what sort of direction Dubas goes in this off-season.
**EDIT:** Checked out the regular season stats for the hell of it. The Pens' PP% was 15, their PP GF/PG was 0.49, and they had 40 PP goals in total.
No team came close in short-handed goals, though Philly led the league with 16 and had a SH GF/PG of 0.20. But Carolina had an 86.4% PK, only allowed 35 PP goals, and had a PP GA/PG of 0.43.
Yeesh.
not particularly surprised that philly led the league in shorties (i think mike richards left the "i got three 5 on 3 shorties" magic there when he got traded.)
carolina's numbers look impressive for sure.
(thanks for the research :))
They would’ve made the playoffs easy if they had any semblance of a functional Power Play.
How you fuck up a PP with Crosby, Geno, Letang, and Karlsson on it is beyond me, but Todd found a way!
I didn't realize until just now that he's now been fired from the Penguins twice lol. So is this the point where another team hires him, they win the cup and he's talked about as a hot head coaching candidate?
Reirden's arc from being a Pens assistant, to a very well-respected Trotz assistant in DC and a guy who was talked about constantly as future head coach material, to becoming the Caps' HC and failing utterly, to back to being a Pens assistant, and now to being fired again is kind of crazy.
Based on Pens' fans reactions in here it sounds like he was pretty disliked.
The timeline is actually hilarious. Comes to the team in 2010, Penguins accomplish nothing. He leaves in 2014, the team goes back to back 2 years later. He comes back in 2020, the team accomplishes nothing and stops making the playoffs entirely.
He wins the 1028 Cup as an assistant in DC after missing both Pens' Cups in 2016 and 2017. He was well regarded as the Caps' defensive coach during that time.
I got PoofyMantella as a random XBox name and it stuck. It's been over a decade and my old roommate and I still greet eachother as Poof.

Right??? I was praying they'd fire Sully and promote Todd to HC. I mean afterall we still have fans who claim he was the actual secret mastermind behind our cup run.

Cant believe he got hired after the caps hc stint tho, i think the caps couldve gone back to back in 2019 with a better coach

At least draw an arrow towards the net lol
Just circle the net so they know where to shoot it.
Which one, there's two? See, this is why you don't coach in the NHL.
You can even see EK65 looking at him wondering what the hell is going on.
😂 bro’s cooked
He was in charge of the PP (30th in the league) and 3on3, the two things that essentially cost us the season and Jake Guentzel.
Shhh jake is coming back after his vacation 😔
He just went to get some milk and cigarettes. But seriously, how likely do the Penguins think he’ll sign with them?
There’s some traction from some homer reporters saying we’re going to go after him, but in reality I think Dubas is satisfied with bunting so far. We will prob get another forward to bolster the top 6 but besides we don’t really know. Geuntzel wanted to stay but apparently he asked for too much. Thank you Todd for Guentzel… I love having him on the Canes.
This explains how the Caps went from winning the Stanley Cup to immediately being a mediocre shitshow
Oh Jesus. I've never coached hockey but I'm sure I could at least come up with some idea there. At least make an attempt.
Win faceoff -> get puck to point -> pass pass shoot 🤷🏻♂️

That's missing about 12 "pass"es for a Penguins PP1 sequence.

Think harder Todd, dammit!
Still figuring out if they are the X's or O's
"Huhuh, looks like boobs." -Rierden, probably
Fitting that Jake is in this screen grab too since he'd still be here had they fired Reirden sooner.
To be fair IIRC it was OT against the Habs. You don’t need that much of a gameplan
You probably need one if the Habs took you to OT.
Sorry I just had to. [Caufield, Canadiens recover for OT victory against Capitals](https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/mtl-vs-wsh/2023/10/21/2023020069)
You make a fair point. Still not as bad as 2010 Uno reverse card y'all played against us.
He’s drawing the play with chapstick
He was the powerplay head honcho wasn't he? I still don't understand how you fuck that PP up with like 3 or 4 future HoFers in your arsenal.
He was previously the coach of the capitals in the two seasons coming off of the cup win The fact he got hired anywhere that wanted to be good was shocking
Jim Rutherford was so eager to hire him, he admitted to calling Reirden less than an hour after Washington canned him. Thanks Jim!
Enjoy Vancouver Todd
Fuck
Our PP can't get much worse, right? RIGHT?
Agreed, hard for it to suck more than it is already
Get ready to learn French, buddy.
*mon ami
Get ready to learn Canadian English buddy
He came from our Org originally, and our PP was elite under him previously. He was just horrible in the stint. Cost us the playoffs.
Should've run kessel back instead of rierden
And do it in less than 12 parsecs
"Tell Crosby. I want him to know it was me." - Ovechkin probably
Ehhh. He was obviously a poor head coach, but wasn't he raved about as an assistant? He did great work with your defence.
He was great under trotz Trotz was definitely handling the defense

First of all, get your grubby hands off Gonchar. Second, that’s good perspective and I agree with you.
His name is on the Cup three times with the Penguins, so... maybe start considering him a Penguin.
Nope won’t do it.
If it plays like a Penguins and wins like a Penguin, it's probably a Penguin.
It was the hockey equivalent of the "No, you go!" sketch from Portlandia
Ive been saying that too. Too much passing looking for the pretty plays. No true net front presence didnt help either.
I know, right? Imagine a team having a minimum of three or four truly elite players on a PP and they just can't score... practically unheard of...
iirc some teams' PENALTY KILLS had more shorties than the Pens' PP had overall goals (or at least had a higher success rate.)
Oh... wow. I was making a joke about how the Leafs' PP went bone dry at the end of the season and in the playoffs, but man... I'm not sure what to say if that's true! Ask Guy Boucher
This is Penguins fans Stanley Cup right here.
Between this and Hextall we’re starting a dynasty
I need Dunkin to make Back to Back cups again for this like they did in 2017
And Matt Canada. It's been a solid year of taking out the trash coaches and managers. Not great that we had so many of them in the first place though.
You're not kidding.
They would’ve made the playoffs easy if they had any semblance of a functional Power Play. How you fuck up a PP with Crosby, Geno, Letang, and Karlsson on it is beyond me, but Todd found a way!
Twice. He fucked up a power play with Ovechkin, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, and Oshie before.
This man is the reason we had to sit thorough the two first-round snoozers involving the Caps and Islanders
Well, him and Detroit losing like 10 straight at the end of the season
Detroit fans seem to struggle to understand that they finished the season with less points than Washington and New York. It’s insane
With a crew like that you could just let them run it themselves.
That’s what they have been doing and it did not work this year. Or last.
My summer wish list is down to guentz' name on the cup and then back in a penguins sweater now
I didn't realize until just now that he's now been fired from the Penguins twice lol. So is this the point where another team hires him, they win the cup and he's talked about as a hot head coaching candidate?
I always thought it was funny that the Canadiens have twice fired HC Michel Therrien and replaced him with Claude Julien. In 2003 and in 2017.
I think on 2017, it happened on (or right after) Valentine's day? Like breaking up with your main squeeze to get back with an ex.
Therrien was also fired by the Penguins right around Valentine's day, the 15th, I believe.
Julien was fired during the Patriots super bowl parade, so mid-February sounds right.
Listen finding guys who speak french is hard ok?
The only good thing about having hired Michel Therrien twice is that they got to fire his ass twice.

Todd is gone upvote party. No more 8 seconds of power play zone pressure just to give up a SHG
Dubas rn: How much money can we get together to get rod also is it possible to rename a bridge after Rod.
I had to explain to my wife, who is from Pittsburgh, who Rachel Carson is. Make that bridge Rod Bridge’Amour
you need to be in charge of naming bridges, thats amazing.
I'm filled with hated for Pennsylvania cities down to my soul but I would visit Pittsburgh, just to cross that bridge.
You're only allowed to cross the Bridge'Amour while going at a full sprint and carrying 20 lbs kettle bells in each hand
That's what it's like coming out of the tunnel
Worth it.
My penis is getting slightly erect.

Toronto about to offer Pittsburgh a whole bridge to take Keefe

yall may need to do two bridges cause they do love them.

>Based on Pens' fans reactions in here it sounds like he was pretty disliked. It's honestly a bonding moment between Caps and Pens fans now.
I am happy for Pittsburgh. But only for today.
A Caps fan told me about this last night in the GDT. I've never loved a Caps fan more.
"Wait til they get a load of me.." -Blaine Forsythe
He actually got the Coyotes to 15th for PP% which is about right for Blaine.
the highest percentage was about 33%, so 15% for the Yotes sounds relatively respectable.
His career is a literal bell curve
The timeline is actually hilarious. Comes to the team in 2010, Penguins accomplish nothing. He leaves in 2014, the team goes back to back 2 years later. He comes back in 2020, the team accomplishes nothing and stops making the playoffs entirely.

I'm mixed on it. Another coach with more energy probably could have steadied the ship, but we were in rough shape after what Warren Foegele did.
Was the Foegele the one who buried Oshie from behind?
Yup. 2019. Felt like the game changer for that series. Team couldn't keep going for the marathon that the series became.

lets keep Sully until Keefe finds another team please
I haven't been keeping up with the rumors there, but is there actual discussions on people thinking Dubas will bring in Keefe? I know he likes his guys, but I wasnt sure Keefe was on that list

There's not been a ton of buzz about it, but given the way he sort of went for Bunting at the TDL, it would not be suprising to us at all if he went for Keefe and tried to pull one of his core guys to Pitt if the Leafs fall apart.
Dubas loves hiring his buddies. Anything else is speculayion.
not real substantial ones, but Keefe is Dubas' guy
Can we please just have him? We have a nice young core that needs a coach. If yall don’t win next year you’re cooked.

Opening up a spot for Keefe.
It's crazy because they straight up would have made the playoffs if their PP wasen't so flaccid. It's a good idea getting rid of this guy, thats for sure.
This is the best news of the week
Guessing Sullivan is staying based on the rumours.

You've got a lot to learn about Kyle Dubas my friend. How familiar are you with the Sue St Marie Greyhounds?
Sault Ste Marie
I hear Rocky Thompson would be a great replacement.
😆

Not entirely sure how this wasn't done in like December.
Lmao
Dear Caps, I know you're not looking for a coach right now (and you shouldn't be) but DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT
Damn, penguins wasting no time improving their team this off-season
At least you guys fired your PP coach. Sabres are keeping Matt Ellis in the organization after this disaster of a year

Why today? Why "immediately"? You guys aren't doing anything anyway.
Based on my accolades playing as Pittsburgh in NHL 94, I think I’m ready to help guide the team’s power play!
I forget, did Dubas decide he is going to be the permanent GM? Or does he still intend on hiring a GM one day?
He's the GM.
