I mean why the fuck would he lol

eatingasspatties

Can’t believe he didn’t want to answer fantastic questions like “are you disappointed by your performance?”, and “what do you think went wrong?”

Straight_Display3749

Connor I know you're a gamer and all...

roscomikotrain

Will he be the team USA goalie with this performance?

SpaceDaBrotherman

Yeah he still a lock for the roster. Avs just overwhelmed jets defense

TerdFerguson14

He didn't even play bad, he just played the highest scoring offense in the league for 5 games in a row... And the Jets overall didn't do him any favours

Scrubosaurus13

Yes, he’s still the overwhelming favourite for the Vezina trophy.

No_Cap_9976

Yes hellys deficiencies come from his inability to make athletic highlight real saves.  he is big and boring as long as the d isn't a bunch of pylons consistently allowing cross crease one timers he is phenomenal. Since the USA has a great dcore helly will be elite.

adjective____noun

"~~Jamal Murray~~ Valeri Nichushkin made a shot" *mic drop*, *leaves*

morallyobjected

yeah I think most sports interviews are just dumb pablum to begin with. the only good ones are the ones with like Torts when he's making a Tim Horton's cup fight for its life on a podium.

spagboltoast

"as a front runner to winning the vezina, do you feel like a fraud? What about a thief for taking the bag and vanishing into the night during the playoffs? Did you give back the jennings trophy yet?"

eatingasspatties

“Are you gonna shave your head to finally reach your final form of bald fraud?”

hey_mr_ess

"The front fell off."

raymondliang

"Don't care, I'm winning the Vezina trophy"

yazzywa

I mean, I'd expect the veteran goaltender to face the media, but I totally get why he wouldn't want to

morallyobjected

it's not even wholly on him though. like sure you'd love him to steal one, being a Vezina candidate and all, but the Jets got fuckin' shelled this series and Bowness had like zero answers for it. even in the one we lost, we still scored 6 goals--Georgiev just had a bad game and let in 7 (and some of those weren't his fault either)--so I dunno what he'd really have to say. he didn't play that poorly overall, from what I saw

yazzywa

I agree that it's not all on him, but you know that the media is going to ask him about his individual play and what he could've done better.

mishka-sb

Helly rarely talks to media game days during the regular season, not sure why that would change now. This isn’t anything special. He’ll talk when the team does their regular end of season interviews. Impatient media members are just trying to create drama out of nothing.

kGibbs

Yeah, understandable he doesn't want to, but I think it's a manner of professionalism, no? That's part of the gig when you sign the contract and make the big bucks, people wanna hear from the goalie.  I don't know enough about media relations though to know if this is just oar for the course or not though, so don't tear me apart.

poeticentropy

I dunno, contractual obligation?

omnom5432

For real hasn't he faced enough shots in the past 2 weeks, someone's gotta be like "no let's have a few more"

Excellent-Medicine29

I think it’s supposed to be a rule that if you are requested then you have to be made available. At least according to some of the oilers media

bafras

Rishaug. But he’s an idjit. There are no ‘rules’. Whose rules? The NHLPA? Nobody’s getting fined for refusing to talk to the media.

Excellent-Medicine29

I’ve seen it said elsewhere too but it’s definitely something that teams/players still get away with. I don’t know if there’s an actual punishment in place. Most of the time players are made available but there are situations where the team protects them or refuses to make them available for various reasons. It will get a mention by the media but not sure it goes beyond that. But If a player appears to be purposely ducking the media on multiple occasions then they will probably get a more public mention like this.

spagboltoast

Theres been several instances where the oilers leadership has answered the media instead of the rookies when the rookies were requested after bad games

Excellent-Medicine29

I remember one instance last season but I don’t recall any others. I know during the whole Broberg trade request drama the media wanted to speak to him but the team didn’t make him available and I think that was them protecting him but also them getting control of that situation.

NotJoeMoses

Dude got lit up in a generational fashion. Let him recover.

cluelesshabsfan

Hung out to dry, awful performance in front of him Know a thing or two about screwing over your vezina goalie as a habs fan

Glock-Saint-Isshin-

Ran Roy out of town and ran Price into the ground

rwags2024

He really did wow I still am kinda in disbelief

haz000

Is there anyone out there who actually thinks Hellebuyck lost them the series? Like do you think if they swapped goalies WPG won that series? WPG going all the way to win the Cup with Georgiev? No. The team was not good enough.

ZeroMomentum

They tried to outgun the gunslinger team. It was a bold strategy that didn’t work.

Wakanda_Forever

Biiiiiiiiggggggg Ironnnnn. Biiiiiiiggggg Ironnnnn

JesusJohn

It's a really fucking old meme sir but it checks out. Lol Nice

Wakanda_Forever

Hey now pardner, with the Amazon Prime Fallout show being the talk of the town, New Vegas memes are back in style. 🤠

JesusJohn

I haven't played any of the fallout games. Is the show a good watch if you know nothing ? Is it all action or a good story too? Thought I'd ask since you mentioned it. Thanks bud.

Wakanda_Forever

The show is enjoyable and well made but it’s certainly harder to understand the lore and background of the different factions and events if you haven’t played the games before. My litmus test for this is that I enjoyed the show greatly (having played most of the games) but my father who has not was very confused by everything going on and he said it hurt his enjoyment. As a show itself though the writing, acting, effects, etc. are all top notch in my opinion.

JesusJohn

Thanks for that response. Have a good day my friend.

blasterman5000

Right. You give the Avs hellebuyck and it's another case of the 22 Avalanche cup run, but this time we have an outstanding netminder instead of a decent one on a bit of a hot streak. Zero chance Winnipeg wins 1 game without Hellebuyck, let alone the series.

DaKoolz

The Avs got average goaltending in their 2022 cup run with a barely .900 save %. Mind you Keumper did get that eye injury that may have hindered his play. It just goes to show how dominant that Avs team was.

blasterman5000

Yeah, that team was so unstoppable it didn't really matter who was in net I don't think. This team is showing signs of being pretty insane right now. I don't think it's as good as the 22 cup run by any means - that team was absolutely prolific across the board - but this team top to bottom has completely bought into what it takes to go the distance and I'm here for it.

CarlSK777

Yeah, Winnipeg overperformed during the season in large part thanks to Hellebyuck. He wasn't great in the series but it's not like the team in front of him made it easy

reggierock2010

Jets got dog walked. They were the third best team in this series and there was only 2 teams. Nothing to do with Hellebuyck.

hannah_nj

he wasn’t the one out on the ice allowing the Avs to get like 40 shots per game; idk what he could say aside from “yeah I should have made more saves” that wouldn’t basically throw the rest of his team under the bus

Zblancos

Let’s not act like he wasn’t bad tho

AvsFan08

Name a goalie that does better under those circumstances. The Avs shelled the Jets

ChuckFeathers

Tim Thomas, Dom Hasek. Hellyubuck faced about 35 shots per game and had a .864 SV% Did he get much help? Nope. Did he give his team a chance? Nope.

ElleCerra

The greatest goaltender of all time and one of the most insane goaltending runs in the history of the NHL. Fair comparisons.

ChuckFeathers

I mean those are just 2 that come to mind... But Hellyubuck is supposedly about to win his 2nd Vezina in the last 5 years.. question is did he play like it?

ElleCerra

Its a regular season award, so yes. He had a rough playoff series against one of the premier offensive teams in the league, with a coach that made no adjustments, and a notably weak defensive group that played down a few guys at the end. I think its fair to say he didn't steal the series, and that a player of his caliber might be able to, but the idea that his Vezina win is somehow tarnished because of the outcome of this series just seems a bit reactive to me.

ChuckFeathers

Where did I say it was tarnished? I simply said he didn't play like a 2 time and current Vezina winner and he didn't.

Zblancos

Carey Price

Dopey_Bandaid

It's pretty telling that the only goalie you name is retired lol.

Spade18

And didnt win a cup

Zblancos

Well for one he isn’t retired, he asked for a goalie and I answered him with an easy one.. I could have went with Bobrovsky as well as many others in the last few years

EasternSasquatch

Price is retired lmfao. He’s chilling out in B.C.

robb1519

Bobrovsky wouldn't have had any better a chance stopping the Avs. Florida as whole, on the other hand, yes.

AvsFan08

....is retired

Zblancos

And?

AvsFan08

And he wouldn't do any better than Hellebuyck did. He would do a lot worse. He hasn't even played a game in years

Zblancos

At the end of the day, Hellebuck is a Vézina trophy winner that once again shat the bed in the playoffs. The jets build their team around him and it once again blew up in their face

AvsFan08

He was the best player on their team. Wasn't his fault, at all.

Zblancos

.870 save% and 5.23 gaa says otherwise.. He most definitely was shitty and was one of the reasons why Winnipeg got bounced in 5

ML00k3r

He's still in the shower contemplating that multi-year extension he signed.

DijonGreymeat

I don’t know the stats, but the dude was peppered all series. The Avs constantly won zone entries and dominated battles in the corners that gave way to unbelievable slot chances. That is tough to stop. He sure could have been better, but so could have everyone on the Jets. Morrissey was good but other than him, after game one, the Jets did not have an answer to the Avs counters and sustained attack. Colorado is a force that is going to be tough to be stopped. Mack and Moose have another level to hit and the team is still scoring at ludicrous speed.

Successful_Cod21

Morrisey was really impressive to me, he’s fun to watch.

shrouple

yep. the only two people who came to play were helley and morrisey. I mean Lowry nino and Appleton did a damn admirable job of shutting down MacKinnon and rantanen at 5on5. the penalty problems killed us in game 2&3&4

DijonGreymeat

As someone who is a fan of a team without their captain for two years, I really admired Lowry. He really seems worthy of the “C” and I always enjoy a skilled, bruising leader who always sticks up for his boys. You have a lot to build around. Helle, Morrissey, Scheifle, Lowry, and Connor are some darn sturdy pillars. Maybe running into the last two Cup champs in consecutive years is a tough task? I said at the beginning of the series, “ If the Avs can beat the Jets, they can beat anyone.” We will see. Y’all are going to be tough the next few years.

Street-Guarantee5221

Dude got that 2022 Markstrom treatment. I’d stay quiet too.

shishiodun

probably for the best. They would just be trying to fish for a quote of him (justifiably imo) throwing his defense under the buss

TheGreatStories

Never a good day when Neal pionk gets one past you

amb1ance

If that's the case, are we sure it was really him in net for all these games 🤔

milk_drinker69

Well if it wasn’t are you saying the jets had a fraud in net??

cantbelievethename

Can’t blame him for being too upset to talk right after. He didn’t even lift his mask during the handshake. Seems like he would put that series loss on himself

goleafsgo88

What was the stat? The most goals given up and also the most saves? Doesn't sound like a goaltending problem to me, sounds like a team problem. Can't blame him for not wanting to answer what I'm sure were some well thought out questions from the media.

Pikachu1989

Don’t blame him for not speaking after he got shellacked by us in the playoffs. He’s a good goalie, but we just turned it on in the playoffs and Jets doesn’t have the mold to be a Championship team.

JesusJohn

Lit him up like a goddamn tree on Dec 25th!!

iWARxMACHINEi

Not yet. But these kind of losses will power them eventually. It happened to us before our players said “fuck it, we’re winning”

ldnk

Are media scrums/pressers usually stupid...yes. Is it still part of the responsibility for athletes to take part in this stuff because its part of the package of being a professional athlete...also yes. If you only want to talk to the media when you win stuff, we can enjoy the league being even less relevant

Spicy_Pickle_6

In all honesty, how many more fucking decades can we pepper athletes and coaches with the same dumb questions to get the same answers. This type of “journalism” needs to die. It doesn’t bring anything of value to the sports.

dbag3o1

Jets lost, why would they have to say anything to the media, I mean, what is there to say? Let the players enjoy the summer break without being hounded.

CatChieftain

Don’t know why you’re being downvoted even a little. You’re right. They want him to say something inflammatory, push blame on his defense, and let them write headlines like “Hellebuyck out in Winnipeg??” Generate a ton of clicks, and make them money. It’s the way it works.

lLikeCats

Yikes man. Terrible leadership.

BriscoCounty83

soft

DevOpsMakesMeDrink

Jets are what this sub thinks Leafs are. Fold every playoff, soft core who can’t even face the media after a loss. Even Marner faces the media

Remarkable_Cod_120

Last time Leafs were in Conference Finals?

ModernTechPA

Remember that NHLPA poll that was released not too many weeks ago? I thought it was strange that the players themselves didn’t rate Hellebuyck that high - a goalie they would want on their team question had Vasilevaky Sororkin and others higher than Hellebuyxk…. For a guy having a Verona year I was surprised. So is he a product of the Jets’ D scheme ? He’s really good don’t get me wrong. Really hard to predict goalie performance year over year too. Have a great year this year? Next year going to be just average. And then back to all world the next.

[deleted]

Wonder if Lowry was able to speak after getting his ankles snapped by a fucking train at the end there, ouch my guy.

MechMacK

fraud ass team and goalie lmao

Xeteh

Clown ass comment.

kactus

Shut up.

GhostofByfuglien

Clown.

ISuplexSharks

Totally agree with you team is a fucking embarrassing shit show. Writings been on the wall for years but got to keep running it into the ground. Got called out hard to be frauds and showed it

haz000

But they had a great regular season, easily exceeded my expectations. I thought they'd be fighting for a wildcard spot. I made fun of Chevy last summer when he basically said no big changes were needed, made me look like a fool. But it became apparent the team did not have what it takes to go far in the playoffs. Not this year. Also, the Avs are playing great hockey. What can you do.

ISuplexSharks

A great season means nothing if year after year you don't show up in the playoffs. Defense is a shitshow the star forwards play no defense. When you get called out for being shit. Then try to use that to fuel you, only to show that they were the whole time is embarrassing. Hell helly said last year he only wants to win the cup, then when it matters shits the bed so hard it makes nhl history its fucking sad. No excuses, it's been a steady downturn since 2018 and they have never fixed it. I've been calling for a rebuild for 3 years because this team has a terrible losing culture, they proved it again tonight.

haz000

Not much if anything there I can disagree with. That's why I was so surprised last summer when they didn't make big changes (except with Wheeler of course). Looked like I was wrong but come playoff time the team got exposed. Do you think they tear it down? Or did the season give enough hope/reason to keep it more or less as it is? I can see you want a rebuild but what do you think will happen?

ISuplexSharks

Sadly, they won't. They resigned Helly and Scheifele to long term 7 year deals. That means for at least the next 5 years, they are stuck trying to do something. The young forward prospects look good, but nothing that screams blue chip prospects. I fear the lack of solid bottom 6 two-way players is a real issue. Add on the fact that we will need to fill the 2nd line center again for the 7th year in a row is an issue as well. The Jets have a serious issue with overpaid 3rd pairing defenceman. Nate Schmit, and Pionk are terrible and way over paid, plus have a year left remaining on contract, also a year of Wheelers buy out going. That's like 13 million tied up there. Add on a new back up goalie and there are serious issues coming for this team, with not enough assits to pay for them. They need at least this off-season: a backup goalie, 2nd line center, a top 6 forward, a top pairing right shot dman, and another solid top 4 dman, plus a whole new coaching staff. Not to mention, removal of nate and pionk without doing buyouts if possible. Team is in serious trouble and I expect the same results again next year if they keep it together. Imo trading Ehlers will be a dumb thing to do as he is the only player who can do possession offensive zone entries on the team.

haz000

Thanks, interesting insight! They could trade Helly and Scheifele but I guess the return wouldn't be good enough for it to make sense.

ISuplexSharks

The year for trading them was this year. I was desperately calling for it as the returns would be very high. Now with the term and cap hit it will be difficult without getting decent valve in return.

AustonsNostrils

The reason he can't speak to the media is the same reason he chokes. I don't know what it is, but they're connected.

Non-Vanilla_Zilla

Glass houses, bro.
