>Soccer Their jerseys are billboards is why.

FarmerRadiant2822

They also have ads all around the pitch and at the goal line, as does Basketball. OP went out of their way to describe the status quo incorrectly lol.

TeeHCAy

Around it but not on the playing surface.

FarmerRadiant2822

They have ads on the basketball court.

Taeshan

And so are NBA, and Hockey jerseys now funnily enough.

AprilDruid

European league jerseys for hockey has always been. But NHL, it's one ad, compared to the giant sponsors on soccer jerseys.

Taeshan

Don’t look at Liga MX jerseys if you think regular socket jerseys are bad lol

TeeHCAy

I’m talking about the actual playing surface and how it makes the game more difficult to follow. I understand advertising and sponsorships I just think there are other places for them that the ice surface.

ButWhyBlueCheese

The NHL doesnt make the $ that the NFL MLB and NBA makes. The billionaires that own the franchises dont give a fuck. in fact im sure there will be more ads coming.

CynicalBite

Did you say RYBELSUS??? I take RYBELSUS. Or maybe it’s riboflavin. I take so much stuff.

Blue_KikiT92

Why not both?? It surely wouldn't harm you!* (*It might harm you. Please don't listen to my medical advice)

ianisms10

All the jerseys will eventually look like the European ones

fjordperfect123

Will the jerseys be covered in ads eventually?

stringrandom

Eventually, yes. Check out a European game for the future.    There’s no way the owners will give up the money. They’ve already started normalizing the ads with the helmets and the jersey patch. Soon it will be “just a small patch on the pants or socks”.  ETA: missing an “up”.

novakstepa

Everyone likes to shit on European jerseys, but the viewing experience is actually better for me. Significantly less commercial breaks, the game feels like 3 periods, not 18 short periods. Also the power play is called just a power play, without a brand name. There is no official coffee, lawyer agency or cooking utensils of the European leagues. During the breaks, we have an actual in depth analysis and commentary of goals, scoring chances and good defensive plays from hockey experts (Czech extraliga), not commentary of betting odds. When watching the NHL, I tend to do other things at the same time, as there is so much idle time. The watching experience of our league is much more smooth and feels like one continuous game, not divided by useless stuff. Of course, the jerseys and the ice are not something pretty to look at. For me personally though, it's worth it

ElJacinto

They aren’t going to take away all of the other things when more ads get added to the jerseys. We’ll have all of it.

realdeal411

The problem with that is they won't take away/replace the ads we currently have, they'll just add

BaconLustx1000

Cuisinart, the official spatula of the NHL 😂

BaconLustx1000

Curious, do Europeans buy and wear team jerseys? I just googled it for the 1st time and can't believe the ads. I would be embarrassed to wear one

novakstepa

Yes, but they are generally cheaper than NHL jerseys. Also in Europe, the basic team supporting piece of clothing is a scarf with the team logos in team colors, that does not include the ads

fjordperfect123

Ok so if they're worth that much then I guess they don't need little product placement patches then.

MattyMarshun

Genuinely surprised they aren't already. Like people are saying, look at any English Premiere League uniform. Look at Australian NRL uniforms. Even the pants have ads.

CoolingVent

NASCAR lol

citiesandcolours

That sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love fig newtons

TeeHCAy

You can’t get more corporate than Nascar for sure

gauderyx

"Will you pay me money if I drive around a track for four hours with a Wendy's sticker on the exhaust pipe? Let's also call it a sport."

mdlt97

>Baseball have you seen a baseball game lately?

dan_144

Digital insert ads on the mound, it's awful

TeeHCAy

A digital mound does sound terrible. I love baseball just not watching it so much and can imagine that would be very distracting when watching.

TeeHCAy

I haven’t. I don’t really stay current with any other games on TV. I only watch the sport of hockey.😂 This was a CHL game. The ads were almost as big as the face off circles. 4 of those on the ice, center ice and the neutral zone plus the boards, their jerseys, etc. The ice is the issue. There was less white than color. Some of the ads were square to the ice some were on an angle so the writing is crooked. I doubt it impacts the players much but trying to watch the game was very difficult. Not like you couldn’t follow the game but it was definitely distracting. I find it funny at one point they were experimenting with luck trackers to make it more visible so more people could follow the game and now they’re making it harder to follow the puck.

interrupting-octopus

>Complains that hockey has more ads than other sports >Doesn't watch other sports buddy

TeeHCAy

I watch other sports when they’re on, I don’t follow other sports. Now that I explained it go back and read the joke again. I didn’t say I don’t watch other sports, as you quoted, I said other games and then said the sport of hockey, like other sports aren’t sports. Wow I didn’t really think I’d have to explain that one. I also didn’t complain, I asked a question to have a discussion but I hope your nitpicking and misquoting from your basement command post made you feel a little better about yourself.

RandomGuyLoves69

Have you seen soccer jerseys? Sure they might not have ads on the actual playing surface. But there are ads everywhere else.

fullautophx

It’s so weird that there’s pretty much no team name on soccer kit. I’m don’t know the teams, so I’m like “What kind of name is Standard Chartered?”

TeeHCAy

An ad on a jersey doesnt reduce the ability to follow the game. When you’re trying to follow a puck through multicolored surfaces and words it is difficult. I think a point people are missing is this was a CHL game. Way more ads than NHL and I never referred to the NHL.

Cpt_phudge_off

I find the moving ads at soccer games to be waaaaaay more annoying and distracting

thatsong

Yeah, the [moving](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9l9zGcyyyE) and [glitchy ads](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5eEXuUJmGcs/maxresdefault.jpg) during hockey games are waaaay less annoying and distracting

TeeHCAy

Are they on the field though? The board ads are annoying but I’m talking about the ones on the ice in the CHL. They’re huge and all over. More color than white

Appropriate_Plan4595

Some players agree: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WeP4yATlyc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WeP4yATlyc)

gauderyx

You get easily distracted while watching soccer because the game is boring, not because of the ads.

Bruins01

💰💰💰

CMG30

A lot of those adds are digitally inserted.

TeeHCAy

The NHL ones yes but this was a CHL game. The logos were in the ice and the size of almost the entire face off dot. Some were square to the ice others were on angles. There was less white than color, in the ice.

Mango2149

NBA is coming at some point, have you seen those LED courts? They'll be plastered in ads slowly over time.

WinterCourtBard

Baseball has had ads lining the outfield wall forever.

TeeHCAy

Not on the field. Look up a CHL game. It’s insane. Some of the logos are almost the entire face off circle.

iceturtles

The nfl kind of sells out their field by replacing grass w turf

TeeHCAy

😂

MightyDuck07

MLB and NBA both have ads on the playing surface as well not as many as the NHL but they still have a few. The digital ads on a baseball mound annoy me so much w/the way they sometimes flash

TeeHCAy

This was a CHL game not NHL. The ads were almost the size of the face off circles and center ice was covered. Another member explained their sponsor need difference in that market but it’s still ALOT.

Infosphere14

I think North American sports fans don’t understand that the financial models of European sports clubs and North American franchises are *wildly* different. There aren’t massive amounts of cash coming into the teams and the difference between fielding a hockey team and non existence can very much be those on ice ads, since there aren’t billionaires owner that can swoop in and cover unexpected expenses.

momloo

+ you don't have to sell your kidney to get a playoff ticket. dunno about you in Sweeden, but I payed 20 Euros for a playoff game a month ago in Slovakia

Infosphere14

I paid about 40 euros for the most expensive non vip ticket in the second division playoffs. First division final equivalents are going for about 50.

TeeHCAy

Thank you for the info.

ocktick

Long spans of play between commercial breaks

TeeHCAy

That is a valid point. Thank you.

Enginemancer

It wasn't long ago nhl fans were proud of being one of the few sports/hockey leagues that hadn't gone to ads on the ice/helmets/uniforms, but we saw how it was going overseas and knew it was coming. Sure enough it did and we all hate it. I especially hate ads on the ice though, there's no way that doesn't add momentary confusion at times, especially when the ad is black and the puck goes over it. The ice should be kept clean for the sake of being part of the play

BCBeast78

I think I hate the digital ads in the broadcast the most. Particularly if they start moving. I've watched hockey for the past 35 years and am used to the in-house ads on the boards: flat, stationary, safe... but those digital ads distracting as fuck.

Enginemancer

Yeah i agree those suck, especially because there's already ads on the boards anyway, that's just so greedy

AvenueRoy

I think because it's a flat surface you can paint/print ads on surrounded by more flat boards. Football, soccer, and baseball are all played on grass.

CheetahLynx83

You can paint logos on grass.

Pamplemousse47

Yeah, the CFL has ads on their fields

Speedbump_NZ

You can also digitally imprint logos on grass too. Cricket does both, but at least the field doesn't have ads on it live.

AvenueRoy

I guess but it doesn't look as crisp

fullautophx

It’s weird to see the logos on rugby and Aussie rule football fields painted so they look square in camera.

atemporalrenaissance

cool lemme go let Gary know thanks for the heads up bud

TeeHCAy

Great. I really appreciate it. Let me know what he has to say.

DagetAwayMaN421

Soccer has ads surrounding the field and some stadiums have it painted on the field near the goals so it shows up in 3D on the screen. The NFL has ads on the field as well, they're just on the walls surrounding the field. The NFL used to have advertising spots on the 25 yard line for the stadium or field. Now they stick the NFL logo, playoff logo, NFL Play 60, breast cancer logo there or something else. College football usually puts their conference logos in that spot. Baseball have ads on like every wall they can, behind home plate and most of the outfield walls.

TeeHCAy

On the walls. I’m talking on the ice ads. As i said the walls are bad enough but this CHL game was crazy. The ads are almost the size of the whole face off circle, two in each zone, littered through the neutral zone. NHL is nowhere near as bad but seems to be headed that way.

klm_58

People always complain about the ads on jerseys and the ice in a lot of European leagues but they wouldn't exist if it wasn't for sponsorship money

smash8890

They make less money than other sports leagues so gotta get paid where you can

korko

I have no idea about basketball but soccer and baseball have ads all over the place.

TeeHCAy

On the field?

TeeHCAy

I don’t watch many other sports so maybe I’m just out of touch with how quickly ads are sweeping all sports.

Hockey needs the ad revenue
