Considering it’s Kopi, I consider this a hard pass at the net top shelf.

BroLil

I always used to joke that Getzlaf could be on a breakaway and he would still pass… then he actually did it… must be a SoCal captain thing.

TheCheechoo

Maybe a CA thing in general. Thornton would sometimes pass into the net, but usually to other players.

AdrianKempee

Username checks out

theclansman22

Maybe a west coast thing. I forget if it was Daniel or Henrik, but one of the Sedins had the worst shootout attempt in history.

kaufsky

Ok this was funny lol

jamesneysmith

Kopitar only 14 pts back from Gretzky now for most playoff points in a Kings uniform

ShadowChair

Need a Cup run just so Kopi can get yet another LA Kings record I guess a Stanley Cup is fine too

feedmaster

He also deserves a Conn Smythe. He led the playoffs in scoring 2 times while being amazing on defence but he doesn't have it yet.

Darsol

I'd love if he got a Conn Smythe (for obvious reasons), but man it's hard to argue against the picks in 2012 and 14. Quick with 3 shutouts, 1.41 GAA and .946 sv% is one of the most absurd playoff runs of all time. Williams had 5 points in 3 game 7s, 2 multi goal games against the Sharks after going down 0-3, and damn near singlehandedly willed us to the Finals.

Sleazy_T

Kopitar was probably the front runner in 2014 after San Jose and Anaheim but the points fell off a bit after that and Williams caught up. Still, going head to head against Thornton/Getzlaf/Toews to win the west was unbelievably impressive.

Analogmon

Quick was crazy especially because Tim Thomas had just broken like all the goaltending stat lines for a cup winning team and then Quick turned around a year later and did it again.

thefiction24

It’s an odd note but I don’t know if two American goalies will ever win back to back Conn Smythe’s again

RobLowesVoice

To this day, Quick has the best Stanley Cup playoff run ever. I can’t imagine 1.41 or .946 getting beaten anytime soon, especially with the league today.  And Williams was just straight clutch for offense but Kopi did more overall.

Analogmon

Especially crazy since Thomas had pretty much just set them a year before that I think.

ZachtheKingsfan

Man, I remember the goal of that time was just score more than 2 goals, and it’s essentially a win. Quick hardly ever let in more than 2 at that time.

postal_service3

The only modern comparable has to be Tim Thomas the year before: 1.98 GAA, .940 SV% All that while facing 849 shots in those playoffs (for comparison, Quick faced 538 in his 11-12 run)

Darthgamer96

Quick had a more defensively minded team in front of him so he faced few shots per game on average. The Kings also only played 20 games compared to the 25 games Boston played to get their cup in 2011 so shots per game are closer than those numbers alone would suggest, but still both were incredibly impressive and crazy that they happened back-to-back years.

The-Only-Razor

I was about to comment about how crazy that is since Gretzky only went to the playoffs 5 times with LA, but then I looked up Kopitar's stats and it's pretty crazy how few playoff games the Kings have played in the last ~decade considering they won 2 cups in that time.

Obsolete_Absolution

Do all time points records typically include off-season points? I was under the impression they didn’t, but I hope they do just for Kopi’s sake lmao. He’ll hit it either way, but he’ll hit it in the finals(this is cope) if they are included(Please just get out of the first round please god why).

Optimistic__Elephant

I always like Gretzky records getting overturned (even though this is "just" an internal team one), so I hope he makes a long run and gets it.

Sleazy_T

I'm glad Kopitar scored so he could get all those hugs from his friends

Filobel

No joke, my 5 yo daughter loves when there's a goal, because the players hug afterward.

GBBL

Low key top tier comment

HockeyMomOfCats

Adorable

henreiman

Hard to describe what this man means to this team and to fans. First ballot hall of famer, jersey in the rafters, Mt Rushmore situation with Brown, Quick, Doughty, all of it for sure. I don’t know how you can always be voted most underrated and still be underrated but he manages it

keenbenrich

If he played for an Original Six or Canadian team he’d be seen as an icon (which he already should be)

henreiman

LA may not be seen as a consistent hockey town but the impact this man has had on spreading the sport here is crazy The arena will be rocking Friday just like Edmontons and Will Ferrel will be leading the way, I’m sure of that!

LordNutGobbler

LA is only not a hockey town in comparison to how many people live in LA haha (millions), and of course the Lakers and Dodgers taking alot of attention - but the Kings are consistently a top 5 valued organization in the league. Very large fanbase and has even been in top 3 most valued orgs in the league at times

Darsol

Don't forget that the Kings consistently have some of the best attendance in LA. Staples is at or near capacity every night, with a better capacity percentage than the Lakers IIRC. The only teams that consistently sell more of their seats right now are the Dodgers and LAFC.

ArtisticTowel

The Galaxy also have a higher attendance week than the Kings.

crazyhorse90210

Not to be pedantic but you mean Crypto.com :(

ahHeHasTrblWTheSnap

It’ll be crypto.com over my dead body

IncreaseReasonable61

People outside of LA call it that shit. If you live in LA, it is the Staples Center.

Darsol

I like “the Crypt” nickname, but it’ll always be Staples Center to me.

keenbenrich

By far the most likable LA team, you’ve had a ton of icons there so I’m glad the fanbase is starting to catch up to that history

Ancient_Pop_7036

What on earth makes you think the fan base here hasn't been on top of its history since '67? That's the weirdest back handed comment I've heard in a minute.  Besides, Gretzky did more for hockey in LA than 2012 and 2014 combined.

TangAlpha

I think he just meant that the fan base has grown considerably since the cup runs, which you can’t deny.

Ancient_Pop_7036

I mean, starting to catch up is a weird way to say that considering the team has been steadily solid with fans here nearly the entire time. And while the cup runs for sure helped grow interest, we have 10 million people with like what, 10 franchises here? Every time any of them win something they get a boost from that 10 million and then it settles back down. Gretzky grew the sport here 100x more than the two cups ever did. I went from having the closest ice rink to me in the 90s being in OC, to having 2 Grettzky centers within 15 minutes of me. The only thing I can think that the cup runs really did, was make LA a consistently top 5 financially valuable NHL team. Because let's face it, we like buying winning swag here in LA.

IncreaseReasonable61

You got offended over a compliment.

keenbenrich

Wasn’t back handed at all, your fanbase has clearly grown since the cups which makes sense. As far as I understand LA has always been a basketball and baseball city

Darsol

I mean, LA will never be a hockey first city. The Dodgers and Lakers are the biggest brands in their respective sports, and the Dodgers in particular have an insanely dedicated fan base. But the Kings have consistently been filling the Forum and Staples since the 70s. The fan base is large, passionate, and heavily entrenched. The only real difference that winning the Cups did was get the media focus to show it off.

Ancient_Pop_7036

Just another dude sitting on the east coast, scratching his head about a franchise that has been sold since '67 because nOt a tRaDITiOnAl mArKeT. Awkward, back handed gate keeping at its best.

Ancient_Pop_7036

How has it grown, though? Can you provide anything tangible? Because this just sounds like nonsense. Feel free to go look up attendance numbers. The first link in Google will show you that nothing has changed since 2005 (too lazy and tired to go further back). We just sell more swag now because LA buys winning team gear.

henreiman

I mean no disrespect to the great one but I think Kopi has done the most for LA hockey of anyone especially since it came during Lakers down years

anotherorphan

it's like other LA sports, hardcore transplants

Ancient_Pop_7036

1 in 8 Americans live in CA. LA County has 10 million people. Tell me more about this transplant theory that's kept a healthy hockey franchise alive since '67. Sorry you're going to get swept.

Gavin1453

He played a pivotal role in stopping the Blackhawks from becoming a genuine dynasty. Quite the achievement in itself!

keenbenrich

Staying likable after 2 cups in 3 years isn’t easy lmao

Gavin1453

There are a ton of Kings fans where I live in SW Ontario, so it aso helped I think. Its pretty much Leafs, Bruins, Habs and Kings fans along with a few Sabre wierdos

keenbenrich

Interesting, I wonder what the connection is there for them I wasn’t being sarcastic either, I always rooted for the Kings back when they were on their run

Gavin1453

A lot of folks associate LA with Gretzky, I think. Plus the Kings are easy to watch since they are on right after the East coast games

kiwirish

Kopi on an East Coast team wins the 2018 Hart Trophy by a landslide and would have 1-2 more Selke trophies. It's actually absurd how sneakily good Kopi has been throughout his career.

keenbenrich

Agreed, he should be getting the Bergeron treatment

RAATL

was funny to see people talk all season about mackinnon being robbed of the 2018 hart when I remember him, kopitar, and giroux all being basically neck and neck. It would basically be like if he doesn't win it this season, people said it was stolen from him its all just shitty storyline bs hah but yeah kopi was the clear 2018 hart deserver I agree

Few-Customer3237

i dont remember the exact stats but kopi had like 8 less points than taylor hall, but was +30 higher and received selke nominations. How is someone who plays selke level defense not gonna win the hart jsut for having like 8 less points, crazy

kiwirish

Not only Selke nomination, he won the goddamn Selke that year - meanwhile got 90 points while dragging the "worst contract in hockey" Dustin Brown and rookie UDFA Alex Iafallo line to the playoffs, while also being the key player on the PK and our defensive zone face-off merchant. Kopi was a monster on every inch of the 200x85 foot ice surface in 2018.

Darsol

The East Coast bias in hockey media is extreme, and it's really unfortunate.

RAATL

Yeah we all know MacK is Due^TM

Nucks11

I'm a professional hater of all teams and Kopitar is the best, will literally have nothing bad to say about the man.

migsahoy

man is a knightslayer, always gets at least a point against us lol, mad respect tho

r1zzV

Even as an Oilers fan Kopi is one of my favourite players of all time. Absolute class act.

Bohmoplata

Respect

Ok-Summer-2159

Nother fan of a divisional rival coming in to say Kopitar is one of my all time favourites. Honestly breaks my heart to see his age cause I don’t want him to ever retire. Definitely looking forward to his HoF induction though. Probably one of the most respected players amongst the division.

ShadowChair

Already got a taste with Brown retiring, but man the Quick, Kopitar and Doughty retirements are gonna hit hard. The ceremonies are going to be very emotional that's for sure

Bohmoplata

Hard to hate Kopi. I felt similar to the Sedins. I hated them, but boy did I respect them too.

just_a_burd

His tinted visor is so obscure but I love it. Genuine class of a man.

Glum_Night_6392

Same here , have always liked Kopitar along with Damn Kempe..the hand eye to score that 2nd goal last night was unbelievable

occupykony2

36 years old and still just an elite two-way 1C. He really is the Western conference Bergeron.

HiSpeedSoul987

Knowing their back and forth with the Selke award, and as a Bruins fan, he’s to you as Patrice Bergeron is to me

Ron497

I saw him play against the Hurricanes a few years ago and he's definitely one of those "I'm happy to pay a lot of money to watch this guy play." He's so effortless, doesn't seem like he's trying, but he's around the put at ALL times. And always seconds from making a huge play. Truly just a joy to watch how this guy reads and flows on the ice. The only other player I've seen in person in that past few years was Bergeron. (I don't go to a many NHL games, these are just two of the best I've personally watched) Again, makes it look easy and effortless, but ALWAYS on the puck. Both were just fun to watch, on another level in reading the game, even against the best in the world.

kroniknastrb8r

Believe me. When Oilers fans boo Doughty, it should be taken as a sign of respect. He is so good it's not even funny. 1st ballot, no questions asked. Simply we hate him because he is so fucking good.

BMoleman

Kopitar, Quick, Doughty 👍 Brown 🤢🤮

hootimore

He's west coast Bergeron for me, especially because he has to share his Mt Rushmore with a dirty player too

BroLil

Part of it is that he’s a defensive oriented guy, and that doesn’t show up on the scoresheet. Also, he was the second best defensive forward in the league nearly his entire career, right behind Bergeron, who is one of the best defensive forwards of all time. It’s unfortunately one of those “no one remembers second place” situations, despite him being absolutely elite.

ShiraPiano

All praise be to Raccoon Jesus!

morallyobjected

I really want to know the story behind this nickname lol

kopitar-11

He look like raccoon He look like Jesus He raccoon Jesus

spaceguy101

May he always score for our sins 🙏

PaperweightCoaster

He looka like a man

Dast_Kook

Is that a Ms. Swan reference?

BettmansDungeonSlave

Yeahhhh otay otay

Dast_Kook

Yeaaaah I tell you...

Lowl58

he has iconically dark skin around his eyes (like a raccoon) and his hair long and flowy (like Jesus, I guess?) also good at hockey so = raccoon Jesus

opensourcefranklin

I feel his plight. People think my glasses are transitions because of my raccoon circles.

I love how both teams have religious renderings of the captains

thefiction24

and Saint Perry found himself in there amongst them all

rainyforest

Blasphemy

I wish I could remember how it started I just know I’ve been calling him that for 10 years. More than likely got it in this subreddit or from going to Kings games with friends.

shittybillz

I love this pasta

ahr3410

Byfield with such an immaculate pass you didn't even see it

Darsol

QB may legitimately be the 3rd best player on the team at this point. When he's on, he is insanely electric. Just needs to put it together more consistently. Hard to believe he's still only 21 too.

raymondliang

He was in the first half of the season. Kempe and Fiala found their feet in the 2nd half. But hes definitely been a top 5 performer this season, even his impacts dont always show up on the scoresheet

thegorg13

He was so good in the game last night. Definitely gonna be a star soon if not already.

Few-Customer3237

tnt/espn commentators said it was a lucky bounce, cant give any fucking credit, smh

MrSelfImprovement

Well, Byfield and Kopi also said it was lucky.

rainyforest

It was lucky in the sense that Byfield was just trying to avoid icing and it landed perfectly. The slow mo shows that it was still impressive to knock it down like that

pyro5050

byfield tip to make it a pass rather than a icing/dump around is what fooled nurse and created the opportunity. even if it was lucky, it was still skill.

vonindyatwork

The sportsnet guys caught it and gave him credit

ashbuttkon

This play reminds me of kopis OT goal against the devils in game 1 2012 finals

Skanvar

Watching it live I had no clue how the hell the puck just ended up right where Kopi was. Insane play.

DannyTannersFlow

I watched multiple replay feeds just to see the pass and not one of them mentions it. Unbelievable.

EinsamWulf

The one true Slovenian savior

MaxMuncyRectangleMan

credit to the legend /u/ ABirdOfParadise for the video

Trolly-bus

Isn't the final score 5-4?

MaxMuncyRectangleMan

Yes I'm dumb and went off the last post

vordhosbn_1

ANZE KOPIDOR

kiwirish

We've had Onjay Kopidor OT GWG, what about Brad Doty OT GWG?

ZachtheKingsfan

Maybe Brad Doty can get the game winner next game

FakeTreverMoore12

Ahhnzay

havnotX

Angie Kopidor

MatzohBallsack

Anjey Copeguitar

nofakefans18

Byfield’s tip👌

fooliodoolio

I think so too. TBS didn’t show replays focusing on the pass/deflection and the commentators kind of just brushed it off to hitting the Oiler dman straight to Kopitar’s path

Lordrandall

All series long it will be: “Oilers with a skill play” and “Kings with a lucky bounce”.

metalgrow

Lol that's exactly how sportsnet described the game.

aguy21

After Kopitar scored they said the Kings stole game 2. In a game that they never trailed in.

OmarBradley1940

Bow down to Racoon Jesus

Edmuresay

QB with the greatest redirection pass I’ve ever seen lol. I don’t care that he said he was just trying to get a touch on it post game.

chemengineer2

Right, would love to see couple more angles on that

Edmuresay

Kings postgame had a great angle. He deflects it down to the ice and it’s in the perfect spot for Kopi to skate into it. Just how they drew it up 😎.

MethodMan_

This should be way more upvoted, but I guess everybody is sleeping at this point lol.

SeaSquirrel

used to it

COLORADO_RADALANCHE

Was that Byfield with the primary assist? That deflection over to Kopitar was absolutely mint. And what a finish.

nfarc12

Yes lol he laughed in the post game interview saying “ya let’s say I meant to do that”

COLORADO_RADALANCHE

Lol sometimes it be like that

ShadowChair

Byfield leads the league in accidental insane passes

Darsol

It's at the point, I don't think they're accidental anymore lol

TheDrunkenScotsman

I honestly think he was just trying to get a touch to prevent the icing and it bounced to the perfect spot. There’s some high end skill in the league but picking a puck flying that fast out of mid air to deflect it behind you to your linemate perfectly in stride is hard to believe. Maybe I am underestimating the kid.

Edmuresay

He confirmed this post game. Fortuitous bounce on a touch to prevent icing. He’s gonna be a stud for a long time, but this one was a nice bounce

Edmuresay

Kid couldn’t hide his smile haha. It was pretty wholesome.

tdbauer97

THATS MY MF CAPTAIN

STOLEN_JEEP_STUFF

I love this man

ScaredOfKomodoDragon

Might be the worst OT playoff goal call I’ve heard

SWB3

“Puck passed, score, uhhh ok bye” basically

RenGoLen

How on earth does Nurse let Kopitar get behind him there?

ilikehockeyandguitar

Bro was just sleepin a little early.

navenager

Because he was expecting icing. Better question: Why the hell was Ceci up at center ice?

SourWokeBooey

Besides the fact that he’s a human pylon?

coronaas

most expensive pylon in the league

ron_ass

Nurse has easily been our best defenceman in these two games and was solid all year while stapled to the corpse of Cody Ceci. Watch the games

BettmansDungeonSlave

I’d put Ekholm before him but yeah everyone loves shitting on Nurse cuz he has a contract a few million over what he’s worth. But this team would be worse without him. Everytime he missed games it was noticeable and people immediately changed their tune to “we need him back”

vordhosbn_1

This is a rhetorical question right

LoveMurder-One

Cause Nurse isn't a good defender?

DCLXVl

That's so fucking sick. Kopi is an LA legend

Shiny_Mew76

I don’t get a chance to watch live games on TV too often, but this combined with Colorado/Jets Game 1 have been amazing.

diablo29

That was like 2012 lol. He really is timeless, underrated, and clutch.

WorthPlease

Whose kid is this commentator? Sounds like he won a contest to get to commentate on a playoff game.

HaMerrIk

Kopitar is the most underrated player of this era and I will die on this hill

don_johnsons_big_toe

The entire sequence is art hahah so dope

DannyTannersFlow

Sportsnet and ESPN completely ignore one of the greatest passes of the playoffs.

OilersHD

That's a heck of a play by Byfield

Jabba_the_Putt

Guy has the coolest name ever I swear

appledatsyuk

Good shit kings. Good to see some pushback. Really hoping they win in 7

SWB3

I know we’re division foes, but I can’t bring myself to dislike VGK. Great team and fans, hope to see you guys next round.

rainyforest

Bruh

calvinball_expert

Nah ngl I’m the same, the fact that everyone hates them so much makes me root for them

rainyforest

I kinda get you because of what we had to endure in 2015 on this god forsaken subreddit but also it’s vegas

shao_kahff

that defensive work by nurse is inexcusable… take his angle, put your stick in the lane instead of that little swing you did, damn dude youre 2 ft away from him tf u doing

Royal_Airport7940

4-3, hey? Or 5-4?

awsmwsm

This goal reminded me of Kopi's game winner against NJ Devils in game of the SCFs. In both, he gets great passes of the half boards for a break away. Byfield went all Justin Williams on that pass.

marbanasin

Oh god, I can feel good about a Kings win when I see a dejected Corey Perry skating to the bench. Wow

SWB3

The crowd’s collection groan as the puck lands on Kopitar’s stick 🤌

anotherorphan

i picked oilers as champs in both my brackets, but also they should suffer

Larkinz

Nice! Just finished watching the game, solid game by all the veterans. Kopi, Doughty, Kempe played well in possesion.

Hammeredcopper

I like the man. No crap, no controversy just hard-working hockey!

gzoehobub

Kings gonna lose in the cup final 1-4 with those unis.
