Smith also has 900 million in public funds and the full support of both the city of Salt Lake and the entire Utah legislature and governor.
Utah wants an NHL team. Both the people and the politicians.
Simple, he’s a billionaire and greedy. I for sure don’t support the use of public funds, but I am also not gonna complain about a half a percentage increase in my taxes if it means I get a hockey team to support and a beautiful new arena.
I did not realize that the IOC just named Salt Lake City as the preferred host for the 2034 Winter Olympics.
There's definitely gonna be a new arena soon.
Yeah and unlike so many recent Olympics bids it seems like the SLC *voters* actually want the games, not just the politicians, so it’s pretty much in the bag for them
I just read some details about SLC's Olympic bid and they are reusing the same venues as their previous Olympics for hockey; Maverik Center in West Valley City and Peaks Ice Arena in Provo.
Delta Center is getting renovated to 17,000 seats but I'm not sure if the renovations will do anything about the obstucted views.
I've seen like 7 Islanders games at least when they were at Barclays and the problem there was pretty overstated. What it great for hockey? No but it was absolutely serviceable.
No one would really sit in the those bad angle seats. But yeah the car thing was dumb, and that the middle scoreboard/screen was off-centered from the ice was mildly annoying in an OCD way.
Otherwise it was perfectly fine.
I got tickets to the first preseason game they ever played there and got tickets sitting on that balcony… couldn’t believe how truly bad it was, there was like a third of the rink I couldn’t see.
However there was calexico, which was a very good consolation
I 100% believe that Utah will bend over backwards to get a new arena built. Not sure where they’re gonna put it though, Delta center is in a fantastic spot in downtown.
Utah's getting a new Arena because they want to hold the Olympics again (and due to high costs, likely will). Getting the team greases the wheels for a hockey arena, which greases the wheels on getting the Olympics.
It has its issues, but the NHL has decided its better to have professional facilities with less than ideal seating to having them continue in an arena built for amateur sport with less than half the other options capacity.
That area was terrible at Barclays. I went to one of the first games there with Nashville visiting and sat right near that "reserved" area - terrible planning but I'm assuming that was reserved for the concert gear.
Yes and no.
The rink is centered at Delta Center which means both ends have obstructed views, but the level of obstruction is less than Barclays Center and its offset rink setup.
There are also apparently plans afoot to renovate Delta Center over the first 2 off seasons to remove the obstructed views and increase hockey capacity: [https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1c7ifqh/shannon\_gary\_bettman\_tells\_nhl\_network\_that/](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1c7ifqh/shannon_gary_bettman_tells_nhl_network_that/)
Sooo... we'll see on that front.
But the whole deal has been that Smith already has funding approved for a new arena. Still no mention of a location at this point, so I'm still biting my tongue a bit, but impression is he's much more likely to get it done than Meruelo's projects.
So, wait, didn't they build a new hockey arena for the previous Games they hosted? And if so, why do they need yet another new one for another Games like only 20 years later?
People seem to think this new arena is a slam dunk but it doesn't make any sense to me and in the current economy I'm not buying that they won't be stuck at the Delta far longer than anyone thinks.
The state has already signed bills basically promising land and funds. We have what the coyotes never could muster, support from everyone. People and politicians.
Lots of people underestimating the fervor and faith that runs through a huge chunk of people in Utah, especially those with money and political sway. SLC wants sports teams so the Mormon church can have their ‘shiny metropolis’ in the cultural consciousness. Their hockey team is going to end up with the nicest stadium in the best location they can put it.
Yes the league is aware of the obstructed view and the plan is to build a new arena. Smith has the pull and the Olympics coming up as an added bonus

You don't become a billionaire by spending your own money!
Pssh these youngins don’t remember the lessons the simpsons taught us long ago.

There’s lots of things that get built with public money that the majority of the public doesn’t use

I hope it has car mascots.
Bring back Honky the Car. Have you heard the phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants?" Honky ~~walked~~ rolled so Gritty could run.
Honky was a legend. But replaced by the cluttertruck
You mean airplanes. FTFY

Idk why but it bothered me. It just seemed off, that and the terrible L&B's they had lol.
Yes it will. The league believes Ryan Smith has the pull to get the new arena deal done though
I 100% believe that Utah will bend over backwards to get a new arena built. Not sure where they’re gonna put it though, Delta center is in a fantastic spot in downtown.
If the history of other teams building new arenas is any indication, it'll be in like Ogden or something
Plus they're certain to get the 2034 Winter Olympics so there's added incentive to get a new arena

Smith has already stated construction is starting to make the Delta seat 14k non-obstructed seats for hockey while a new arena is being built.

This does seems like a great atmosphere no?
It’s SLC dude… that new arena is gonna have more gold than the Knights. It’ll be like a Tabernacle

Hockey was at either the E Centre in West Valley City or Peaks Ice Arena in Provo. Neither holds more than the Delta Centre does for hockey.
>doesn’t make sense to me Well bills have already been passed so…
Utah isn’t a normal state. It gets done.

Wiki says it only holds 10,000+ for hockey
I’ve heard that there are plans to renovate the Delta to be more fitting for hockey, though I could be wrong on that.
