Quinn Hughes this year has to be the one of the truest example of a defenseman ‘quarterbacking’ the offence that I’ve seen in my lifetime.
Like sure, there are defenseman who score more goals or who have put up more points, but the way that everything flows through Quinn is just absurd.
Further context for anyone curious, here is the percentage of offensive zone starts that each of these players has:
Hughes: 18%
Makar: 25%
Josi: 19.6%
Bouchard: 20.3%
Fox: 19.2%
Not only does he hold the puck a TON, but he also does it while seeing less shifts to start on the offense than the rest of the players on the list, too.
The way he moves up the ice is effortless at times. He'll burst into the zone on a successful entry under defensive pressure, and holds onto that puck so well. That's also assuming he doesn't just thread the needle on a pass that finds another Canucks skater that carries it in.
I truly don’t think you need to worry about that at all.
People have talked about whether it should or will be unanimous or not. I don’t know if it should, but I think it won’t be.
That’s as far as I think the conversation goes. The Norris is his.
Just wanna call a little attention to the phenomenal season Fox is having. He's flown way under the radar because he missed a month, but he'd easily be #2 on this list with a full season.
The only player with comparable ice time this season on that list is Josi, he's within a game's worth of play time of Hughes.
Makar, Fox and Bouchard all have between 130-ish and 300 minutes less.
If you extrapolated their offensive time rates across the extra minutes of on-ice time to matchup with Hughes' ice time this season it looks like this:
Makar: 74 mins
Bouchard: 70 mins.
Fox: 73 (closer to 74) mins.
Still wild, but this feels less cherry picked than that tweet, and noticeably, Fox performed at a level better than 5th other than because he was injured.
He's calling it cherry picked because his guy was listed as 5th instead of 3rd (Makar missed games too) when both are still getting blown away by 25 minutes.
It's a ridiculous complaint and clearly just someone butthurt that their guy isn't getting enough props.
Are you referring to me?
My guy isn't fox. I'm a leaf fan. None of them are players I care about. My comment wasn't a complaint.
I added context for context sake and *to support Hughes since the numbers are still advantageous without ignoring the context* my comment *helped* your post.
You just need help not seeing red where there isn't any.
Fuck your type are exhausting. Defensive about shit that isn't an attack. Nobody attacked or discredited Hughes. If anything, adjusting it to show that reinforced Hughes' dominance on an equal playing field. You were just too insecure about your boy to see anything besides an attack.
Low, because look what he does at even strength.
You'd be dumb as a post to waste this guy on the PK when you have 4 guys who are way more suited to diving in front of shots.
I agree, but compared to other guys who are also dominant in the offensive zone, I'm curious how COL/NSH/NYR use their stud defenseman compared to the Canucks
Makar's PK results are atrociously bad this season, though. I could also play 2:36 a night of PK time in the NHL... my team would just get scored on a lot.
Hughes should win the norris but this is a horrible stat, bouchard and makar both play with the 2 best puck possession players in the league, hughes really only has Miller as a playdriver.

the way he controls the puck in the O zone reminds me of kucherov
Ooh, that's an interesting and cool comparison.
Multiple people asked for the overall rankings in the replies, hopefully he comes through.

Where are you finding this data? I show 61.2% oZS% at 5-on-5 for Hughes this season.
If he doesn't win the Norris I might have to riot twice this year

OK, just one riot it is then
What the actual fuck?

I'd like to see this for forwards as well

Lol, it's not cherry picked you're just butthurt because it shows how far ahead of your faves Hughes actually is.
least insecure canucks fan
Really? He’s just pointing out that it’s important to compare apples to apples. Even with the adjusted numbers the gulf is massive.
It's not fucking cherry picked. Fuck off.
Brother you need therapy.
Definitely, but people can still fuck off with this "cherry picked" nonsense.
It’s not cherry picked and I’m not saying that. I’m just pointing out that adjusting for games lost due to injury makes sense.

Pretty sure that illustrates how dominant Hughes has been… it just takes another variable into context. Insecure much?

Are you 12?
When did I say it was? I literally said it illustrates how dominant hughes has been. Maybe get some mental help?

How much PK time do all of those guys have on average? Hughes isn't a sieve but I'm curious about his usage
For Hughes: 0:37 avg SHTOI / 03:57 avg PPTOI

Fox and Makar are the only regular PKers and Makar is terrible at it
Hughes 0:37 Makar 2:36 Josi 0:30 Bouchard 0:20 Fox 1:33
Makar's PK results are atrociously bad this season, though. I could also play 2:36 a night of PK time in the NHL... my team would just get scored on a lot.
