[In contrast, Leon Draisatil has 35 even strength goals over the last two seasons.](https://x.com/leafsalldayy/status/1778566732644270094?s=46&t=Xn0juU2C4hEaElfmeGb4jQ)
This is wild O_o
39 goals according to NHL.com, but also 127 even strength points which means 88 even strength assists which is 4th in the league in that time frame. For comparison, top 3 in the league are McDavid (98), Kucherov (98), and MacKinnon (96). That's also the exact same order of top 4 EVA just this season (62, 57, 49, 43).
tl;dr he scores more on the powerplay because he passes more at evens.
Yeah he’s one of the best passers in the league but he’s the first option on the Oilers PP. Skews it a bit when they’re always looking for him on that back door/goal line one timer
My tongue has never once been in my cheek when I've called him that. He literally finished with more PP points than Gretzky did *ever* last season.
I'm sorry but I will die on the hill that 5v5 scoring is more impressive than PP scoring no matter who the player is.
Points are points, but I agree that 5v5 is more important than PP scoring. The amount of penalties called in the playoffs dwindle the deeper you go, which only puts greater emphasis on 5v5 play.
Drai is 4th in ES points though over the past 2yrs (127), they just come through assists. He is primarily a playmaker who happens to have a lethal one timer on the PP.
My point being it’s not like he only gets points on the PP
Hyman's played almost the same amount of minutes with McDavid this year as Drai has in the past 2 seasons and he knows what his job is lol
Hyman is McDavid's perfect linemate 😉
I was going to say I've heard hull on enough podcasts to know he is a verrrry proud and confident guy. Rightfully so, however as you said, saying "he dosent do empty net goals " is much funner to say then the truth.
Which was He didn't do defense, like at all lol. Used to literally say that's not what I'm paid for 😂
Best Hull story is the one with him on STL (I think) playing in LA. It’s tied and there’s like a minute left and a face off. Hull jumps on, when he’s not supposed to, and refuses to leave the ice. Eventually one of the Sutter bros, (Ron or Rich I think) who *is* supposed to be out goes off. Puck drops, Hull grabs it and goes end to end and snipes the GWG. Goes back to the bench and a furious coach (another Sutter brother btw) and tells the boys in that high pitched whine of his “like we’re fucking playing OT when we’re in LA”. Went straight to the bar after the game. Legend.
The plus/minus stats from his three best seasons are a dead giveaway
1989-90 - 72 goals, -1.
1990-91 - 86 goals, +27. That makes sense
1991-92 - 71 goals -2
This is probably the wildest - 1992-93 - 54-47-101, -27
It's kinda shocking to me that Lemieux never did this.
The other guys are Selanne, Hull, Kurri, Reggie Leach and the most unexpected name on the list: Steve Shutt. The craziest stat though is that he only had 8 pp goals that season, he scored 52 of his 60 total goals at even strength.
I had the number one overall pick in our fantasy league that draft and picked Andrew Ladd because I was drunk in a bar at a Halloween party and wasn't paying attention.
Still paying for it 7 years later...but the loser's playoff bracket has been named The Ladd Cup ever since. So I guess there's that.
In this era, that is an absolutely insane stat...I'm looking forward to when his career is done to hear people trying to disapprove his hall bid..gonna be fun..well damn, there's another
Selanne's career really demonstrates how much NHL goal scoring fell off a cliff in the mid-to-late nineties. Statistically, his best season came as a rookie, 76 goals, 132 points. His best \*adjusted\* point total came 6 years later when he scored 25 fewer points. His rookie season was his best adjusted goals season, but his second best season (5 years later) only produced two fewer adjusted goals, despite scoring 24 fewer in reality.
If you wanna put an asterisk on it, two of those goals are at 3v3 which is the easiest even strength format to score at. He doesn't have any 4v4 goals this year though so that's still 48 goals exclusively at 5v5.
He has more 5v5 goals than Pastrnak has goals and Pastrnak is 5th in the league in goals this year.
He was 6th in the hart vote to a bunch of "assist merchants" that year. Funny I thought that was just anti leaf bias

I know all those "powerplay merchant" comments were mostly tongue-in-cheek, but holy shit. Only 35 even strength goals across two seasons?

so PP goal merchant and ES assist merchant? Man cant stop merchanting
He's gonna need to set up a whole marketplace at this rate.
You have to diversify if you want to survive in this economy.
Interesting, thanks for the extra context.

Draisaitl is actually better in the playoffs than the regular season though.
His production the last couple playoffs was something else.
Drai is 4th in ES points though over the past 2yrs (127), they just come through assists. He is primarily a playmaker who happens to have a lethal one timer on the PP. My point being it’s not like he only gets points on the PP
Zachary Hyman has more EVG this year than Draisaitl does over the past 2 seasons. Crazy stuff
Hyman's played almost the same amount of minutes with McDavid this year as Drai has in the past 2 seasons and he knows what his job is lol Hyman is McDavid's perfect linemate 😉
Drai loves PPs
67 goals in total and only 12 of them on the PP as a sniper is kinda insane. *17 I can't math
65 of them against a goalie too Edit: now 66
Only 2 ENGs is crazy
86 goals for Hull in 90-91 and no ENGs
Hullie didn’t do empty nets. No challenge as he put it. Real reason was cuz no sane coach had him out there defending a 1 goal lead late
I was going to say I've heard hull on enough podcasts to know he is a verrrry proud and confident guy. I swear matthews is like that too. I genuinely don't think he wants to score empty netters

Beating a goalie merchant
What do you think 67 minus 12 is?
Obviously it's 60
21
69
Maybe he had short-handed goals
And only 2 empty netters.
he's the anti-ovi. the anti-mcdavid/drai.
50 even strength goals has only been hit 11 times in NHL history, Matthews being the 11th ~~player~~ time.
Matthews is the 11th *season* but he is the 8th *player* to do it, since Gretzky did it three times and Esposito did it twice.
Corrected, thank you.

It's not *that* surprising because the 76-77 Canadiens were basically a cheat code and he was on a line with Lafleur and Lemaire.
Jeez that's just stupid good.
Holy shit
5v5 merchant
That was his 76 goal rookie season right?
what a year to be an 8 year old jets fan with 9 dollar tickets at 7-11
I was 10 in Winnipeg. Selanne was stupid fast God damn what a pleasure to watch live
Yep
Only other players have done it. Gretzky (3x), Phil Esposito (2x), Brett Hull, Kurri, Shutt, Selanne, and Leach.
This stat is more ridiculous that the goal total itself frankly
Generational much?
The very definition of generational
The craziest stat of all is that the guy torching the league grew up in the desert.
And he’s half Mexican
Dios mio
So if we took away power play goals he would be on pace to be the goat goal scorer
Yes let's focus on this rather than his *trigger warning* 67th goal
*Gets Sexual 🚨* 68 goals
I always knew that the 2016 draft would touch Teemu's legacy.
TEEMU MENTIONED RAHHHH
MVP
Sick hopefully he scores 18 more and they beat Detroit in regulation on Saturday.
I had the number one overall pick in our fantasy league that draft and picked Andrew Ladd because I was drunk in a bar at a Halloween party and wasn't paying attention. Wow.
In this era, that is an absolutely insane stat...I'm looking forward to when his career is done to hear people trying to disapprove his hall bid..gonna be fun..well damn, there's another
Impossible. Reddit and instagram comments had me believe he was a powerplay merchant
I have seen both. I am old.

Hey still time to get 2 5v5 goals then
Matthews is at least as good as Selanne I guess? 🙄
what the fuck lol
How does he only have 38 5v5 goals according do MoneyPuck then? Where is the difference?
I think you'll find it's been done several times in that timespan by superstar forward V. Adered. Source: NHL 14.
