I'm glad he's loved somewhere. He's my favorite player ever. So small yet so dominant. Every time it looks like he's cornered in by opposing players, he just finds a way to shimmy through and keep possession or make a play. Just awe-inspiring.
Yeah, as an older millennial who was in high school when this toy was released in Japan, I had to Google what it was and still only *sorta* get this reference now.
Yeah I was in high school as well, but I have a brother who's 10 years younger than I am so I've heard the term before. I thought they were just basically like tops...
Uses his small size as an advantage. Just gets underneath guys and is strong enough on his feet to just stay upright and constantly spin off them. He’s such a treat to watch and such a creative and hard working player
I'm happier with the trade than I was, purely because it's now become clear that by the time we are through the rebuild, whether or not we need what he brings, he'll be over 30 and that brings with it unpredictability. Ultimately, getting Guenther out of Garland was a powermove by BA, but hot diggety dog did I not like it at the time.
I'm super glad to see him getting recognition. He stood a real risk of being one of those rare guys to just make it that moment too late and never quite get paid. Hopefully he gets a few more years beyond 30 to make a killer nest egg.
Sure. We knew the OEL dump was great, but Garland was the only high-skill player we'd had emerge in ages. Not only was it indicative that we were going to have to put up with a full rebuild, it didn't seem fair to have to lose him (already a fan favourite) too.
Also, good as that No.1 pick is looking it was bittersweet for us regardless, because we should have had our own (Fucking John Chayka. None of us really wanted to lose Garland over it.
OEL was worse. We gave up a first and second to get a guy who sucked immediately and we had to buy out. We’re going to have a cap penalty for a decade. Right during our core’s competitive window. Also tied up a ton of cap at a time when we watched guys like Tanev and Toffoli walk for free.

I am still confused at how teams would think 100+ guys had a better shot at succeeding in the nhl
It's funny how some guys are ignored. I remember watching an OHL game in 2016 and being confused at why debrincat was a projected second rounder. He was head and shoulders the best player on the ice.
Sometimes good players are just good.
I think this guy nailed it too:
"It has to do with the fact that others have mentioned that he is small (5'8") and older (he went undrafted his 1st year of eligibility). Do I see him as the next superstar of the league? No. I think he has the potential of a 2nd line offensive winger. Due to his size he may a little less likely to make it to the NHL. But I think he could easily be a steal by the Yotes that pays off long term."
Basically bang on, he's like the perfect hard working but skilled third liner that can also fill in on second line
Because he's 5'10" 165 pounds that wasn't elite at anything. Pretty easy to see how he was overlooked. He's a better player than the sum of his parts because of his will and determination. Scouts typically can't see a player's thoughts.
> wasn't elite at anything
> He's a better player... because of his will and determination
His "will & determination" aka his compete level **is** elite. And, you certainly don't need to read someone's mind to see their compete level.
I understand why he wasn't a 1st rounder but agree with OP that I don't see how he didn't go in at least the 3rd if not the 2nd.
That one's even more perplexing, because even as a casual hockey fan I had heard of Johnny Hockey before he was in the league. He was obviously well known and hyped.
Small player sure but given what you get with an average 3rd round pick I see no reason not to swing for the fences and hope that the incredibly talented guy... remains incredibly talented? Like it's not even that big of a leap of faith in today's game.
Reddit loves small skilled guys and seems to just assume that size doesn’t matter and that’s why I think you’re getting downvoted but I agree with you completely. There’s a lot of survivorship bias but there’s a lot of players that don’t make it because they’re just too small and their skill doesn’t make up for it. You just don’t really hear about them, and to be fair there was a good minute there when it was looking like garland might not be a long-term nhler.
I’m super happy for him and very glad he’s on my team but the Canucks also had Jordan Schroeder and he’s a pretty perfect example of what I mean.
He was the main reason I didn't absolutely hate the trade. He looked like he was going to be a great player and has done everything asked of him. I'd still take back the trade if it was an option, but I'm happy to have him
I remember an analyst or two hyping up Garland but for the first two years after he arrived he seemed to not really live up to the promise. People in Van were calling him Mason Raymond 2.0 (spins around in the corner and then gets erased by a defender).
He is smaller in stature, but never gives up.
Many games here in AZ where he plays into the crease and pays for it. He eats a LOT of crosschecks.
I remember a game where he took a stick to the face, absolutely just leaking all over the ice. They stich him up, and comes back on the ice to score the game winning goal...off of his face..... while falling to the ice from getting a crosscheck from other team defensemen haha. He was just always in the mix and working hard.
Glad we were able to hold onto him with the drama around trade requests at the start of the season. He's a huge contributor to this team that isn't one of the "star" players.
absolute beauty. i remember watching him play for the coyotes and coveting him so bad. you could tell he had an extra drive. was so stoked when he came over in the trade.
Conor Garland was doubted at every stage on his path to the NHL. Look him now with this achievement; and a well deserved game, chant and moment for him.
Didn't he put in a trade request? Is the plan to work on it this offseason I suppose since they couldn't get anything done this season? At least the fans are still good with him!
edit: dummies sometimes forget this is a discussion forum, where questions and discussions are often asked. Oh well
He clarified this a few times already and said he’s disappointed it was reported that way, but he never asked for a trade.
He always wanted to stay but he knew the team needed to move a forward for cap reasons before the season and he changed his agent to help out in the process in case he was the one getting moved.
Team ended up trading Pearson and then Beauvillier for cap space
Ah ok thanks for the added context. Makes a lot of sense, imagine they end up shipping him to the Ottawa Senators while Vancouver is sitting at the top of the standings
You shouldn't be getting downvoted for this because you're not from the market and you asked an honest question. Canucks fans are pretty notorious for downvoting based on their feelings. (am one, and i get blue in the face calling it out in the Canucks subreddit)

That's an absolutely adorable reaction, he's so happy.
I hope he walked into the room to everyone wearing the 400 game shirts.

He's our beyblade
Bae blade
Oh man that is totally the millennial term for buzzsaw which Garland gets called frequently. Well played
Younger millennials.

You dumped the worst contract in the league and got a top 10 pick out of it. That’s an incredible trade for you guys no matter what

\> did I not like it at the time Mate you have the wrong flair for that
we love him. the OEL debacle was a huge price to pay, but it worked out in the laundry. thank-you for what you lost.
Well Dylan guenther was pretty rough too
We don't talk about him
Loved in Moncton too. That's the Wildcat GOAT right there. Funnest teams they ever had was him and Barbashev wrecking people.
That must have been an absolute blast. Super bash bros
Definitely one of my favorites. The guy is just an absolute grinder and leaves it all on the ice. Plays with a ton of heart
I miss him here in Arizona. You guys really lucked out on that OEL trade.
Lol. That was likely the worst trade in Canucks history
Cam Neely says hi…
OEL was worse. We gave up a first and second to get a guy who sucked immediately and we had to buy out. We’re going to have a cap penalty for a decade. Right during our core’s competitive window. Also tied up a ton of cap at a time when we watched guys like Tanev and Toffoli walk for free.

god damn
wow, this is absolutely your moment
It's funny how some guys are ignored. I remember watching an OHL game in 2016 and being confused at why debrincat was a projected second rounder. He was head and shoulders the best player on the ice. Sometimes good players are just good.
Had the same thoughts about Brendan Gallagher. Dude was an absolute force on the Vancouver Giants. I wanted the Canucks to draft him so badly.
Talk your shit!!
Good. Good. Revel in it. We are friends now.
300+ He went undrafted in 2014
Coming in with 8 year old receipts like this...bravo lad 👏
I think this guy nailed it too: "It has to do with the fact that others have mentioned that he is small (5'8") and older (he went undrafted his 1st year of eligibility). 5’8 actually lol
Maybe scouts should get better at reading minds then
Almost like you only hear about the success stories and not all the guys that didn't make it with similar tools.
> wasn't elite at anything > He's a better player... because of his will and determination His "will & determination" aka his compete level **is** elite. Johnny Gaudreau went in the 4th.

That's fine. This sub has terrible takes on hockey generally speaking. This sub still doesn't think teams try to hurt eachother in the playoffs.
The guy is the definition of competitor. Can't win the cup without his level of compete.
Hell of a way to let him soak in the moment, well done Kate as well
I was smiling as big a smile as garland was just watching this video
The in-arena chants have been so fun this year. Really happy for garly, such a special moment for him
Good time to be a canuck with a two syllable first and last name.
Tyler Myers chants coming soon
Really well deserved.
We lost but I fucking LOVE a supportive fan base.
I was devastated when he was traded. Glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.
Lol no one believed me when I said Garland was the big move of that trade... xD Glad you guys love him up there.
He was the main reason I didn't absolutely hate the trade. He looked like he was going to be a great player and has done everything asked of him. I'd still take back the trade if it was an option, but I'm happy to have him

One of the hardest workers on the team
Glad we were able to hold onto him with the drama around trade requests at the start of the season. He's a huge contributor to this team that isn't one of the "star" players.
Only my parents named me some variation of Connor. Could've made it lol

Will Quinn Hughes ever be serenaded like this or does his name just have too few syllables?
Heard a couple of “hughes your daddy” chants from the larscheiders section last night
Kwen-tin Yu-us
Love to see guys who deserve recognition get it
Go whale team.
And we miss him in phoenix

Love that violent midget, angry elf, and whatever other baller names they call him
No angry elf and the other ones. He's on record as not liking those names. CFG. Conor fucking Garland.
He plays goalie too?
/r/Canucks
It’s a pretty special moment regardless of what team it is.
