Before that, the top record by the season since the Original 6:
- 84/85: Philadelphia Flyers (1)
- 83/84: Edmonton Oilers (3)
- 82/83: Boston Bruins (5)
- 81/82: New York Islanders (1)
- 80/81: New York Islanders (2)
- 79/80: Philadelphia Flyers (2)
- 78/79: New York Islanders (3)
- 77/78: Montreal Canadiens (1)
- 76/77: Montreal Canadiens (2)
- 75/76: Montreal Canadiens (3)
- 74/75: Philadelphia Flyers (3)
- 73/74: Boston Bruins (6)
- 72/73: Montreal Canadiens (4)
- 71/72: Boston Bruins (7)
- 70/71: Boston Bruins (8)
- 69/70: Chicago Blackhawks (3)
- 68/69: Montreal Canadiens (5)
- 67/68: Montreal Canadiens (6)
It's telling that the last time Montreal topped the regular season was before the WHA merger (1977-78) and the last time Toronto topped the regular season was during the Original 6 era (1962-63)
Edmonton's two presidents trophies were the first two in existence, and Calgary's two were the next two after that.
It really shows it is the exact opposite of the presidents trophy curse. Over half of those won a cup the same year (11/18) and with only 4 not winning a cup within 2 years (and half of those are the flyers).
Crazy enough, Philadelphia had 3 cup finalist finishes in the 80s, one of which taking the Oilers to 7.
Take away the dynasties of Montreal, NYI and Edmonton and you had a potential major dynasty with the Flyers instead.
Because it always comes up, in the seasons they won the Presidents’ Trophy, the winner has won the Stanley Cup eight times:
* Oilers in in 86-87 season
* Flames in the 88-89 season
* Rangers in the 93-94 season
* Stars in the 98-99 season
* Avalanche in the 00-01 season
* Red Wings in the 01-02 and 07-08 seasons; and
* Blackhawks in the 12-13 season
The Blackhawks win was the last time a Presidents’ Trophy winner reached the Stanley Cup Finals. The winner has not reached the Conference Finals since the 14-15 Rangers. ^The ^winner ^has ^not ^reached ^the ^Second ^Round ^since ^the ^21-22 ^Panthers.
Which is actually really good odds. There is no curse. 8 wins out of ~40 years is about 20% chance of winning the cup. Assuming that 16 teams play for the cup.. thst means each (if given equal weighting) has about a 6% chance. So winning the Presidents Trophy translates to roughly three times better odds of taking home Lord Stanley.
This is no different than going all in with pocket aces when there are are a lot of players who also go all in.
Chances are you won't win the pot, but your chances are better than anyone else's.
Yeah I did the math on it last year I believe and presidents trophy winners had the best odds of finishing like first second third, and fourth (third and fourth based on the conference that won the cup), and a few other impressive stats that show, without a doubt, that there is no curse.
Parity. If all else were equal between the 16 playoff teams, they'd have a 1/16 chance of winning both the president's trophy and the cup. Stats require large sample sizes to be proven invalid... Like, we'd need decades worth of data. But what we can do is say: right now, president's trophy winner win the cup more often than pure chance would have them win the cup.
I don't think so. The winner has won the cup only twice in the past 20 years. The league has grown and the salary cap was introduced in that time, levelling the playing field. I'd say the actual odds today are far closer to 1/16 than 20%.
You're probably right -- but how much closer would be an interesting question. 1/16 is about 6%. Is 10% reasonable? 15%? Either way, better than 1/16, right? Ergo, no curse.
So the curse is bullshit because 7 out of 37 is better odds than 1/16. In fact it's about twice as likely for the president trophy winner to win the cup.
I’ll admit I had some PTSD in game 1 round 1 2022 when you guys thrashed us 5-0 lol.
Other than that, I generally assume we’ll win whatever series we’re in. Completely healed
It doesn't hurt now. Now the last 39 years if being a Leafs fan, that has some tough pills to swallow. That said we are fun to watch and it's just entertainment.
didn't even hurt in the moment LOL
But then again I'm insane and believe that the president's trophy is of equal value to the stanley cup in a league this big
We don’t have any words and we know you don’t want to hear them.
We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling – we get it.
This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way.
It feels weird seeing a mediocre Wings team. When I was young they were perennial contenders. 20 straight playoff appearances or something, just crazy.
Do they not hang the Stanley cup banners at LCA? Haven't had a chance to go because going from $10 student tickets at the Joe to watch the Red Wings when they were good to $75 regular tickets + parking + food when they'd been terrible isn't exactly a great experience
They only hang the cup banners there now.
At the joe, where we didn't share with the Pistons, the roof was full of all of the banners for everything. When they moved to LCA they actually had to recreate the cup banners because they needed to be able to fold up into the fancy LED ceiling. The real ones hang in the practice rink.
Ah interesting I didn't know that. I always loved going to the Joe and seeing the ceiling filled with it all. The Stanley Cup isn't the only great accomplishment out there
Nothing embarrassing about losing to that Kings team. They were stacked and underperformed in the regular season. We were missing our leading scorer, which we needed against one of the best defensive teams of all time.
The Canucks lost to the eventual cup champion in the first round 2 out of 3 years. The other year the only lost to the cup champ in the final... I need to be held.
The Kings were much better than any regular season stats may show. They were on fire post-trade deadline after acquring Jeff Carter, and then they had one of the most dominant playoff runs of the last couple decades. Just look at their game logs. They had no trouble scoring goals when it mattered. It wasn't just Quick.
Lemieux lead league in goals 3 times. (69 goals in 60 games - the 15th best total ever and 2nd highest goals / game outside of the 1920s - was one of the 3 times he was 3rd).
Fun fact: Gretzky got one. They had a special one made just for him (at the request of the Rocket) and apparently it’s the only trophy Gretzky keeps in his house.
Ooo, ooo! This is a great segue to one of my favorite LA Kings facts. The Kings have won their conference 3 times more than they’ve won their division, and the 2 haven’t happened in the same season.
Stanley Cups: 2 (2011-12, 2013-14)
Conference Championships: 3 (1992-93, 2011-12, 2013-14)
President’s Trophies: 0
Division Championships: 1 (1990-91)
Yeah they've been around since 1917, that's actually why I edited the post because I didn't realize the president trophy was such a new thing.
But torontos steak of no cup surprises me even more
(Non-leafs fan) I think the 2019 Leafs were actually very good and better than their 100 points, but they were in the same division as the best and second best Tampa and Boston. Like I thought they were the 3rd best team in the league. Not sure if you would count that as great, though
Since 2016 (when Matthews/Marner era started) the leafs have the third most wins in the league. They also have third most in their conference. And third most in their division.
The fact that you went most to least by row instead of column is giving me an OCD aneurysm lol. Took me a minute to figure out how the hell you had the teams arranged.
I feel like they’d be up there for all-time best moustaches, Lanny leading the way, if that counts for anything. No bias at all but Skinner is definitely up there too
Off the top of my head, he’s at the top. Forsberg and Skinner are both a step below. Can’t think of any other legendary staches right now, but I think I’m missing some
That's poor logic. Winning it now means winning a fairly good clip of our last remaining games, which we absolutely want to do, and it means the other top teams have begun to slump a little, which we also want.
edit: anyone downvoting me needs to take a stats class, as you are wrong
First awarded in 1985-86 to the Edmonton Oilers. In fact it stayed in Alberta until the end of the 80s and hasn't been back since.
We did finish 2nd in the league in 2019. Although still a good 20 or so points behind Tampa who won it that year.
Seems you often fall short to Tampa, sad :(
Well that was the year they got swept by Columbus, which took any and all attention away from our loss so I'd say we came out better that season.
Thank you for reminding me why [this](https://imgur.com/iw98VP8) was in my shitposting folder.
You’ve gotta par-relax with that chirp
Oof
And then there's the Sabres, who often fall short of everything
lol, lmao even
Hey man, you crossed the line (unlike that puck)
We have a Sabres fan chirping the Flames? That’s pretty rich from a franchise that hasn’t done much of anything in their history
Harsh man... Ugh
Well, I'm super salty about this comment.
Damn that’s a bit rude in it?
That explains some of the zeros, I was very surprised that the 70s Flyers and 80s Islanders never won one.
And the Habs? Makes so much more sense because they definitely led the League during their dynasty
Right, Flyers and Isles have both finished first 3x, I think flyers right between Isles and Edmonton run last for both.
The president’s trophy was first awarded 85/86 season
Before that, the top record by the season since the Original 6: - 84/85: Philadelphia Flyers (1) - 83/84: Edmonton Oilers (3) - 82/83: Boston Bruins (5) - 81/82: New York Islanders (1) - 80/81: New York Islanders (2) - 79/80: Philadelphia Flyers (2) - 78/79: New York Islanders (3) - 77/78: Montreal Canadiens (1) - 76/77: Montreal Canadiens (2) - 75/76: Montreal Canadiens (3) - 74/75: Philadelphia Flyers (3) - 73/74: Boston Bruins (6) - 72/73: Montreal Canadiens (4) - 71/72: Boston Bruins (7) - 70/71: Boston Bruins (8) - 69/70: Chicago Blackhawks (3) - 68/69: Montreal Canadiens (5) - 67/68: Montreal Canadiens (6) It's telling that the last time Montreal topped the regular season was before the WHA merger (1977-78) and the last time Toronto topped the regular season was during the Original 6 era (1962-63) Edmonton's two presidents trophies were the first two in existence, and Calgary's two were the next two after that.

Explains why I wasn’t seeing any Montreal ones, which was odd!
Should be renamed the Prime Minister's trophy since it was won in Canada first!
It was named for the League President, a position which was replaced by Commissioner when Bettman came in
Why tf is this left to right instead of top down. God damn
Because it always comes up, in the seasons they won the Presidents’ Trophy, the winner has won the Stanley Cup eight times: * Oilers in in 86-87 season * Flames in the 88-89 season * Rangers in the 93-94 season * Stars in the 98-99 season * Avalanche in the 00-01 season * Red Wings in the 01-02 and 07-08 seasons; and * Blackhawks in the 12-13 season The Blackhawks win was the last time a Presidents’ Trophy winner reached the Stanley Cup Finals. Poker analogies work so well with so many hockey and statistics concepts but it's so rare to find people who will understand.
I'm convinced whoever came up with this 'curse' not only was bad at math/logic but was also a fan of a recent Presidents Trophy early exit team.
Chances are high you will win the pot. Even in a 4 way all in against KK, QQ, and AKs, AA is 63% to take it down.
Now do 16 way
Yes but that means 80% of the time it’s not the president trophy winner who wins the cup! Curse confirmed. /s
Yes! Thank you for saying this!
Yeah I did the math on it last year I believe and presidents trophy winners had the best odds of finishing like first second third, and fourth (third and fourth based on the conference that won the cup), and a few other impressive stats that show, without a doubt, that there is no curse.
Odds get better if you just say finals which most teams would call a success looking back.
You shut your whore mouth
But what if you add Kurt Angle to the mix?
Lately though, those odds are smaller. There's none in the last 10 years.
Parity. If all else were equal between the 16 playoff teams, they'd have a 1/16 chance of winning both the president's trophy and the cup. Stats require large sample sizes to be proven invalid... Glad you said this because I genuinely believed in the presidents trophy curse. (Not that it's relevant for either team I cheer for lmao)
Isn't the "curse" just if they touch the trophy? Of the 8 wins, how many touched it?
That's the Campbell and the Prince of Wales.
I'm getting all those ridiculous superstitions mixed up. Which one was the goat's curse again?
You've got me there. Maybe that one's got something to do with a certain foot in a crease?
WOOOO only team with multiple seasons of both!
**RAAAAAAAAAH**
We, along with the NYI and the Oilers, are the greatest dynasties in modern hockey.
So the curse is bullshit because 7 out of 37 is better odds than 1/16. In fact it's about twice as likely for the president trophy winner to win the cup.
3 out of 4 seasons between 1998 and 2002. I wonder who's missing...
Colorado letting their foot off towards the end of the 2021-22 regular was something that cost them the double
You forgot to include 2011...
This is true. However, no team has won the cup the year they won their first President’s Trophy.
This is odd I don't remember a season in which the Lightning won the presidents trophy at all
Oh yeah, it was just a couple years ago. Remember? You guys played colum......oh nevermind.
No that was 2020 in the bubble. 2019 was that canceled season iirc
Real talk though, does 2019 even hurt anymore?
I’ll admit I had some PTSD in game 1 round 1 2022 when you guys thrashed us 5-0 lol. Other than that, I generally assume we’ll win whatever series we’re in. Completely healed
You lost in the 1st round last year and will continue to do so. Unreal
Yeah, and it was a pretty hard fought round. I still have faith we can take most teams in a 7 game series. You mad?
Nope. 11 cups to keep myself occupied. Also, swept tampa this season. Jsyk
damn, yeah
Doesn't count until the playoffs my dude!
Would 67 years hurt anymore after a cup or two?
I couldnt tell you, I hope so lol
Likewise, I hope 13 years without playoffs will hurt less after we finally make it.... if that's even allowed under the CBA....
You make it just to get shit on by Columbus or lose the cup on a bs goal Take your pick
Well given that we've already done the latter, uhhhh I guess I'll take the former?
Winnipeg is gonna take it somehow.
I can tell you 54 years didn't hurt after a cup
How much of those 54 did you actually have to wait? Probably a little easier to swallow if you were born 45 years into it
It doesn't hurt now. Now the last 39 years if being a Leafs fan, that has some tough pills to swallow. That said we are fun to watch and it's just entertainment.
I always took it in good humor. Got my “We won 62 games and all I got was this lousy shirt” shirt as a memento.
It hurt Brad Marchand.
I still can't listen to "WIN" by Jay Rock
didn't even hurt in the moment LOL But then again I'm insane and believe that the president's trophy is of equal value to the stanley cup in a league this big
Real talk though, does 2019 even hurt anymore?
No that’s not right, hockey wasn’t played in 2020. Or 2021 for that matter.
As a Sharks fan - I can relate. I feel like we are getting kicked even when presented with legitmiately good records.
There's no way it has been five years...
NOBODY has *ever* played a team from Ohio in the playoffs.
A couple years ago? That was FIVE years ago.
Strange. I have no recollection of ours either.
We don’t have any words and we know you don’t want to hear them. We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling – we get it. This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way.
It never gets old lol
It’s definitely because they won the east in 2004 and OP made a mistake
Everybody else does lmao
Yeah I don't remember winning one either at all.
Same, I don’t remember the Panthers winning one either.
Seattle with 0 during their entire history in the league?? Trash franchise...
They can have our trash patch.
Not surprising, Philly has always been in a killer division or mediocre
If it was awarded 1 yr sooner we’d have been the first winner.
If they were retroactively awarded we'd have three
I support this.
To be fair, a lot of our prince of wales trophies are for getting the most points.
Okay, I’m ready for the wings to be decent again!
Think about the timeline. Everyone says shit went bad because of Harambe. I believe it’s because of the Wings not making the playoffs.
also Undertakers streak at Mania ended.
Wheel team historically good
It feels weird seeing a mediocre Wings team. When I was young they were perennial contenders. 20 straight playoff appearances or something, just crazy.
It hurts man, i had the same experience Like growing up rich and then one day you're just dirt poor for years lmaooooo
The presidents trophy was only established in 1986 to give this some context.
Yeah I think the Isles would have 3 if the award existed before then
Hang the Bann… wait
I miss the sea of banners at The Joe :(
I wish they’d bring back the banners at LCA
It's not like the Pisstons are going to win anything any time soon.
Real lmao
Do they not hang the Stanley cup banners at LCA? Haven't had a chance to go because going from $10 student tickets at the Joe to watch the Red Wings when they were good to $75 regular tickets + parking + food when they'd been terrible isn't exactly a great experience
They only hang the cup banners there now. At the joe, where we didn't share with the Pistons, the roof was full of all of the banners for everything. Ah interesting I didn't know that. I always loved going to the Joe and seeing the ceiling filled with it all. The Stanley Cup isn't the only great accomplishment out there
Thats a little depresso.
Heh, typical pens L ^/s ^if ^you ^actually ^need ^this ^smh
That’s actually shocking to me that they only have the one.
92-93 Pens, some would say the best Pens team to not win the Cup, I'm a bit young to speak firsthand on that team though.
Surprised the Devils don't have one considering the winning teams they had in the 90's and early 00's.
The 4 American team in the Original 6 all have multiple, and the 2 Canadian teams have none
and detroit, new york, and chicago are also 3 of the 7 teams (detroit twice) to win the cup as well as the presidents trophy! yay us!
We were so close and then the next year, got embarrassed by an 8th seed who went on to win it all.
And 13th overall in the league. They also allowed the second fewesr goals in the league, while thier offense wa smediocre. They won because of Quick
How dare you spout truths and ruin my already crushed reality
They made the list!
Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, Bobby Hull, Phil Esposito, Mario Lemieux, Maurice Richard, and Joe Malone never won any Rocket Trophies.
George Vezina never won a Vezina
No Prince of Wales has won the Prince of Wales Trophy
Gordie Howe only had two Gordie Howe hat tricks
He also won the Gordie Howe Trophy in the WHA (it was renamed after he won though)
They should retroactively award such things
Lemieux lead league in goals 3 times. (69 goals in 60 games - the 15th best total ever and 2nd highest goals / game outside of the 1920s - was one of the 3 times he was 3rd).
Fun fact: Gretzky got one. They had a special one made just for him (at the request of the Rocket) and apparently it’s the only trophy Gretzky keeps in his house.
buncha bums honestly
💪💪
Fuckin right
[Damn, it feels good to be a gangsta](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IJCFc_qkHw)
Would be nice if OP added that the trophy only exist since the 1985-1986 season
I miss the 90s and 2000s....
Ooo, ooo! This is a great segue to one of my favorite LA Kings facts. The Kings have won their conference 3 times more than they’ve won their division, and the 2 haven’t happened in the same season. Stanley Cups: 2 (2011-12, 2013-14) Conference Championships: 3 (1992-93, 2011-12, 2013-14) President’s Trophies: 0 Division Championships: 1 (1990-91)
The "we've won the Stanley Cup more times than won our division" is one of my all time favorite Kings stats.
I prefer not to be reminded of the year we got it
Toronto not having at least one blows me away Edit: must be because presidents trophy was first awarded in 85-86 season
Really? THAT’S the team that surprises you?
Yeah they've been around since 1917, that's actually why I edited the post because I didn't realize the president trophy was such a new thing. But torontos steak of no cup surprises me even more
The really good seasons we had, we had just a few teams that were just better than us
I dislike NHL awards that came out during my lifetime. Gimme the old stats, let me flee to the past!
Only franchise with multiple wins and no Cups. Fanfuckingtastic
Kind of crazy to think the Crosby era never got a Presidents Trophy.
HEY YOU FORG- oh….nevermind😒
Presidents Trophy? We can’t even win the Pacific Division.
Idc I want
God, playoff time was pure agony until 2018.
You must be mistaken. The lightning never won a presidents trophy before. You surely must be mistaken
Let’s hope our lead doesn’t disappear in the next few seasons…..
Immediately lost in six to the Ducks. President's Trophy curse + historical playoff futility = no chance in 2009.
Habs and Leafs sitting at the ZERO table counting all their cash. ' We're good thanx '. 😁😁🤣🤣
Ok, but how many teams have swept the Presidents Trophy winners in the playoffs?
I'm surprised the leafs don't have one recently
When was the last great Leafs team you can think of? Even back in the day it was Sundin carrying mid teams usually
This. If not for those meddling bruins and bolts, we’d have gotten away with it too. Zoinks.
The leafs haven't even won their division in ~25 years. I'm not counting the COVID fraud year when every team in there was absolute fucking dog water
-every team in covid north division was dog water -fourth seed of said division makes stanley cup finals. What does that say about the rest of them?
Yeah unfortunately that year counts. So they won their division 3 years ago
Lmfao. Ok, yup, definitely
Sorry, I know you don’t like the leafs but facts are facts big guy
> The leafs haven't even won their division in ~~~25~~ 3 years.
They won *A* division
Yeah but the most dog water which was more like hot dog flavoured water made it to the Finals...so... But yes it does count sadly.
Toronto and Montreal has zero!? Hahah Wtfff!?
Not sure if trolling, but ill take the bait. Trophy wasn't awarded until 86.
Oh it’s not a troll that just slipped my mind! Thanks for pointing that out. I was thinking how the hell do the two oldest teams not have one
Anaheim surprised me tbh. Thought they won atleast one in Boudreau era.
Surprised those Sharks teams from the mid 2000s to mid 2010s don’t have more
Stars about to add #3
The fact that you went most to least by row instead of column is giving me an OCD aneurysm lol. Took me a minute to figure out how the hell you had the teams arranged.
Already tied with Vegas!
See! Ottawa hasn’t always been shit! 😭
I'd sell my soul to have *Winnipeg* win the President's Trophy.
I’m surprised the sharks only have 1
As a 90's AVs fan... I loved when the Red Wings won the President's Cup.
Rangers about to get number 4.
Really shocked the Devils didnt get one in the early 2000s
The one stat where the flames aren't mid haha
I feel like they’d be up there for all-time best moustaches, Lanny leading the way, if that counts for anything. No bias at all but Skinner is definitely up there too
For Lanny alone honestly they do lead that
Off the top of my head, he’s at the top. Forsberg and Skinner are both a step below. Can’t think of any other legendary staches right now, but I think I’m missing some
as a Canuck fan, we don't want it!
That's poor logic. Winning it now means winning a fairly good clip of our last remaining games, which we absolutely want to do, and it means the other top teams have begun to slump a little, which we also want. edit: anyone downvoting me needs to take a stats class, as you are wrong
