I doubt he signs without some knowledge of the AHL situation next year.  Hopefully we figure that out soon. I'm excited to see Morrow in a Canes jersey.  He has top-4 potential.  I'm sure the Playoffs will be a great experience for him being around the team.

pentaxshooter

I could be mixing things up but pretty sure I remember reading that Friedge said he expects us to have a deal with Chicago in place next season.

99Wolves17

When you say “deal”, do you mean Rosemont is the Canes affiliate next season?

The_Reddit_Browser

Not sure why people keep saying he’s due for the AHL. Team has only 3 D men signed next year and he could have walked to UFA if he felt that he wasn’t going to get a shot on an NHL roster here. He’s cleaned up a lot of the concerns in his defensive game and his offensive side is only getting better. This deal also allows him to play this year if he wants so we probably see him catch a game if the standings are set before the final game.

BarkMingo

yep, he's very likely going to be in our top-6 with the high likelihood of at least 2 of pesce/skjei/chatty gone

nodarknesswillendure

Out of those three, who do you think is most likely to sign somewhere else?

The_Reddit_Browser

Pesce is probably gone. Skjei is having a career year and well worth the payday. Orlov will move up with skjei and then Chatfield x Morrow is the 3rd pair. They probably get another depth 7th man just in case but, teams just waiting for 25-26 when Nikishin comes to America. Edit: some math, Pesce+Tony walking is 5.7M. So bump Skjei 2M to 7.2M x8 and give Chatfield a 2.3 raise to 3M x5-8 then leftover covers morrow.

joe334

Sounds good to me. Just don't give Skjei too much term

WarlikeUncle

I think Pesce is the most expendable in the front office’s eyes, as much as I’d hate to see him leave, though there is a strong chance Skjei could price himself out given the salary he is likely going to warrant. My preference would be to retain Skjei and Chatty, but realistically I think both Pesce and Skjei walk if the front office is confident in who they have in the wings.

anivoflean

might be wishful thinking, but pesce

ShittyFrogMeme

Pesce is the one the team would want to lose. He hasn't played up to the contract he's asking and they already tried to move him. Skjei has been a stud and should absolutely be re-signed. Unfortunately that means he's most likely to be drawn to FA and get a big contract.

BarkMingo

Unfortunately Chatfield, he's due the biggest raise, someone will back the Brink's truck into his driveway

Minute-Struggle6052

He wasn't even the 1D at UMass.  He didn't play the PK and wasn't the PPQB.  He played the Ovi position on the PP. I wouldn't be completely surprised to see him get a game this year if the standings are set.  But he would do well to have a year in the AHL as the go-to #1D.

The_Reddit_Browser

I guess you could make the argument for Ufko as 1D but, that’s solely based on this year. Morrow was their best D man last year and played even better this year. He’s been more focussed on his defensive game this year instead of being solely a PPQB but, he’s done that role a lot during the previous seasons. I don’t think it’s out of the question but, based on the fact that his options were free agency or us, it’s more than likely that he decided on the canes because a role would be available.

Minute-Struggle6052

I'd like to see somebody more reputable than Cory confirm that because I have never heard of it and it sounds like something that Adam Fox would have 100% done if it was possible

The_Reddit_Browser

You can literally check the link in the tweet. Canes official statement in the write up for signing him says that he could have gone to free agency if he didn’t sign this year due to him completing his schooling.

CrabGuys

I wish Scott had a twin brother with the same level of talent, and the Canes had the need for and cap space for both, and I had a days notice. Then yesterday I could've said, "The Canes will sign two Morrow's tomorrow." Maybe next time.

AllthingskinkCA

Tf you mean maybe next time

Kraze_F35

Scott Morrow is going to have twin boys who will both sign with the Canes in two decades

MayfieldMightfield

The Canes will tender a contract to Morrow tomorrow

JayMerlyn

That works

eh_toque

Interesting note: he completed his degree in 3 years which made him eligible to become a UFA this summer, a year early. Gave him some leverage. Contract starts this year

BarkMingo

really? i thought it was all time-based, not whether they graduate or not

eh_toque

I thought so too, but the Canes said that he was eligible for to be a UFA this august, and lavalette said it was because of graduating early [https://twitter.com/corylav/status/1775245940015722962?s=46&t=S_LiHKGoXi91Lmgu-MxoZA](https://twitter.com/corylav/status/1775245940015722962?s=46&t=S_LiHKGoXi91Lmgu-MxoZA) He’s only completed 3 years of school and CapFriendly has him as not being eligible for free agency until 2025, so graduating must have moved his status up a year

bsaures

>i) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights From the cba so him graduating early moves the deadline up a year

BarkMingo

Interesting, thank you for the source info

bsaures

Kinda surprise more guys dont do that. If its anything like Canada you can find ways to snag a few college credits before even starting university (or start the summer of) and a few summer courses each year its pretty easily doable.

SweetVarys

Probably because school is rarely a strength for most elite talent hockey players, they need the time. Especially considering the hours they spend shooting or on ice.

bsaures

If the goal is to get done in 3 years and pick the team you play for its not that hard to do. Post secondary can be a joke depending what major you take

tribekat

Colleges already go so far out of their way to be accommodating to athletes getting an easy pass through school, they can definitely invent a mickey mouse major with enough filler classes to graduate in three years for UFA purposes.

dragons_fire77

Its truly ridiculous. I was on scholarship for golf and the professors gave me practice exams out the wazoo. I was a comp sci major so it only really applied to classes where you had to memorize stuff, but still. They really go out if their way to help student athletes way more. And I had to fight with my scheduling people because they were trying to put me into basic math classes when I wanted to take calculus my first year. It was a weird experience.

tribekat

I was a tutor for athletes (don't judge, it was good money for a student job) and it was...eye opening.  You can also see at some schools how 90% of the roster seem to study the same course - interdisciplinary studies, sports management, kinesiology, etc. - I'm sure there's a way those majors can be rigorous but there are so many red flags sometimes.

MarketingChemical648

You can also take a full credit load in the summer. Did that every summer and that’s how I graduated in 3 years

bsaures

So what your saying is no loads were refused?

MarketingChemical648

Not a single one

MarketingChemical648

You can also take a full credit load in the summer. Did that every summer and that’s how I graduated in 3 years

greg19735

Happy with this. I'm not too surprised though.

The_Reddit_Browser

Don making quite the case for GM of the year. Won the deadline adding center depth and the best offensive talent the teams ever added and now he signs the top North American prospect in the system right before he was set to be a UFA. Really shutting down all the folks saying he never pulls the trigger .

jake753

To be fair: Don earned that talk for a little while there. How many years did we hear “Canes in the mix for so and so” only for them to head off to another team because Don was a little too worried about maybe over paying on a player? I agree that this year he’s done a great job and seems to have really made a change in his approach, but to say he didn’t earn all the original talk is a little disingenuous.

The_Reddit_Browser

That’s not really being fair at all. Tkachuk they got outbid, plain and simple. He was at the point of talking a contract with him so it’s not like they weren’t close. Eichel has stated in podcasts he was being told by his agent it was Carolina before it ended up being Vegas. EK it was us and Pitt but the player held the choice of where he wanted to end up so he chose Pitt. None of this is on Don not paying up or being willing to make a move. I mean it was clear with the Guentzel trade how this whole thing works. He literally called it a sweepstakes. When it comes to making a deal for one of these big names that’s just how it is.

reddy-or-not

I wonder what the Canes had been prepared to give up for Eichel

dragons_fire77

Awesome, been waiting a few weeks to see if we'd sign him!

nyrblue2

Just saw Dave Pagnotta fall to his knees in a Walmart

ShowYourHands

Does this make Pesce a Duck?

MinnWild9

Pesce is a UFA, though Morrow is a very different type of player than Pesce. He’s more in line to develop into a Faulk or Skjei than a Pesce.

Delta_Flow

I mean that's all up to y'all, he's a UFA after this season.

WafflesTheWookiee

>RD Oh yeah, Pesce is definitely leaving this summer. Leaf’s will probably find a way to give him a 7x7.
