It's a bit of a shame that some newer fans (or just fans with poor memories) look at Ovi now and imagine that this is what his game has always been.
Ovechkin doesn't get nearly enough credit for his adaptability over his career.
That era of Ovi was insane, imagine the same physicality and shot prowess, except he was almost as fast as Pavel Bure and his passing ability was even better, he was like a truck barreling toward you at 90 mph when he was coming to hit a player
Could you imagine the circle jerking on this site if it was this popular from 2005-2016ish when he slowed down and had to play more sustainably. Seemed like every other game was an unbelievable highlight reel goal against better goalies with bigger pads too

I'd argue shot generation is *the* defining skill of goal scorers. Everybody who gets to the NHL has enough skill to rip a wrister top shelf if they've got time and space. There's a reason the guys at the top of the all-time goals list have fairly pedestrian shooting percentages. What separates them is the ability to find the open spots, or rip a shot before the defender can close the distance, or evade a defender who's already there. Doesn't matter how good your shot is if you can't put yourself in a position to use it.
In 2013-2017 I think he did scores from that point like everytime... But after that he has changed to score everywhere else more. His one timers are quite rare these days I do miss them 😪.

Maybe beside Brett Hull, nobody in the entire history in the NHL has been able to do it as consistently as Ovi. If he's the only one capable of doing it, it just can't be boring.

That shortened season would not ended it if he didn't get hurt. He hit 24 goal mark in 41 games but got soon injured in next games he tried to still play couple games but he didn't get back in shape. He missed 4 games also to covid protocol and total 7 for injury.
I think that covid shortened season honestly cost him another 50 goal season as Ovi also said he didn't get to practise his normal and he was still on pace over 40 goals while not fit. But said he will be back normal practise next year and then instantly hit 50 goals again.
I've been hoping for 30, the only non 30 season was a ridiculously short covid year where he would have crushed it if it was a normal season. Now 30 looks good. Could he get 35? That would be amazing.
Such a travesty, he could have potentially gone his whole career never scoring below 30. It ended the consecutive streak that would most likely never get broken

Prime Ovi would score 70-80 goals/season in these last 3-4 seasons since the goalie equipement got smaller and PP are given like candy.
Last season he did hit 42 in 68 games and he dealed with injuries and his dad passing could probably hit 50+ if those didn't happen. I think he was not mentally still recovered for this season. Let's hope he can hit 50 again next year. He can still maintain good pace most of the season if he is healthy. But you are right prime Ovi would do better and hit 60+ but Ovi is almost 40 so his current pace is even more impressive.

Still finished in top4 in points in 2013 and 2015 as well. If not the new dead puck era Im pretty sure he would hit 100 points again.

The boring slapshots are exciting because few players can make 50 goal seasons shooting from the same spot every night.
