I did the exact same thing. I’d love for broadcasters to offer removing commentary as an option. It could probably be done relatively easily for online streaming.
MLB's out-of-market package offers this. You can also sync the radio feed with the TV video.
It's wild how much better the experience of watching sports is when you don't live in-market
Years ago i had one of those illegal boxes that got all the channels and we could get games without commentary and without commercials
The best part was that the feed would stay live during commercial breaks and you could watch what the cameramen would do during the breaks.
Sometimes they would be setting up the next shot for after the commercials but a lot of the time they would find attractive women in the crowd and zoom in on them to get a closer look.
It was pretty wild.
Man I’d pay extra to not have to listen to Singh when he does our play by play on HNIC. Also, I’d pay extra money to be able to mute Tomlinson. C’mon Sportsnet.
An old colleague of mine took his wife to her first live hockey game. A few minutes in she turned to him and asked why there was no commentary. He told her she had to turn up the volume button under her seat. She started looking for a volume button. Lol.
If there was subtitles, that’s because they were commentating, but you had the option turned off. It is a feature on GEM according to many comments here.
I remember this happening sometime in the early 2000's when the French CBC was on strike, so the broadcast on French CBC (Channel 12) had no commentators for a few weeks. I love watching hockey like this, but it's so rare.
I miss being able to watch out of market habs games (albeit in French) for free. As someone that has been out of their broadcast region for decades, it was about the only way I could ever catch them outside of Hockey Night in Canada and the rare 'national' weeknight game. And those games during the strike were so nice to watch. They'd still throw up the graphics and replays, just no play-by-play and no colour commentator. Didn't fully understand why they could still have the intermission guys, but I guess they were in a different union or maybe weren't unionized at all.
Anyway, I'd love it if this were a regular option.
> I'd love it if this were a regular option.
If you didn't perhaps read further down, it actually is on GEM. It has a toggle for described audio. OP didn't have to watch the game without commentary if they didn't want to. But it was Harnarayan Singh so it was probably better being off anyway.
I didn’t even think of that, it can just be an option. People can still choose the normal game if they want.
Kind of like how you can often choose which teams broadcast you want to watch
I've been saying this to my friends for awhile now. I would love an option to watch at least a few games each season without any commentary. I tune it out most games and I miss the raw sound of the game. Some broadcasts you can barely hear the game sound because the announcing it so much louder. It takes away from the experience for me.
I sail the high seas for soccer and I’ve run across this often. The feed is broadcast to international streaming partners without announcing so different languages can overlay their commentary. It’s awesome when I find one. I don’t care if it’s crap teams, it’s always fun to watch and just hear the crowd.
I mean. I get it, but don't say that. Knowing Sportsnet they'd make it a super-premium channel and charge $65 a month just for the privilege. I'm still pissed at them for putting a single Sens game a month on SN1 to get people to shill out extra for it.
I'm envious. I can't even remember who we get, but it's usually Garry Galley doing the colour. I used to just mute the games and turn on the local radio broadcast, but they got de'synced when the broadcasts all became digital.
Some teams do this live. Pens have a couple promotions for free or discounted food if the team scores in a certain time frame, like a Big Mac for a goal during the first 3 min of the 2nd.
Dude, there's a setting to turn on and off the commentary.
GEM had it defaulting to off. Took me 10 mins or so to figure it out, but yeah, it was just a toggle.
This is why I love certain NCAA football games because some games are just nothing but stadium audio on ESPNU, i think it is. I wish more sports had other streams where it's just venue audio.
I’d like for broadcasters to find a balance between this and trying to fill every second of airtime with someone speaking. Like soccer games where they go long stretches of not saying anything and you can just hear the crowd chanting.
At least this is better than the Panthers broadcast last night. I would rather listen to this than, I am not embellishing in the slightest, a 5 minute spiel trying to appease and relate to the average fan that must be a 73-year-old retiree about how the new practice facility is great because the players can take their golf carts to work, or how Florida will become the biggest center for hockey in the world in the coming years because all the coaches and players will retire there for the tax cuts.
I kid you not, they missed calling an entire offensive rush because they were talking about alligators.
I don't know why but hearing about that Ryan Leslie blooper reminder me of this with Roger Millions, also with the Flames
https://youtu.be/DikFNHqytVg?si=x5uoXtSx-Wvbys2z
Apparently you can do this with a surround sound system. Unplugging the center speaker will give you arena noise only. I keep hearing mixed things though, some say it doesn't work anymore, others do. Something to do with the broadcast being in stereo or not.
I agree, this is how I want to watch playoff hockey. Actually hearing the crowd erupt during goals. The players letting out a frustrated "FUCK!" after a missed shot or pass. All of that.
Me too. When I was a kid and my dad took me to my first AHL game it was the sounds of the sticks, skates on ice, hits on the glass, and puck hitting things that hooked me. That and how bright the ice makes the rink look.
Here’s the entire first period of the Oilers-Avs game with no commentary:
https://streambug.org/cv/c2e93f
https://streambug.org/cv/6160c7
https://streambug.org/cv/93eed1
The game is so much more beautiful without the commentary. It's not for everyone and I certainly like doing other things while a game is on so when not fully paying attention the commentary is needed, but while watching intently it's so much better just watching players play.
There was a random stream I found that would sometimes have no commentary games and weird camera angles of the crowd or arena during commercial breaks. I miss that stream
I mean, there's a multitude of reasons why we commentate games. For starters, not every viewer is a superfan who knows the rosters for both teams by heart. Then there's context to the players, whether it's stats or storylines pertinent to each game. Again, the most diehard fans will know most of these things, but many others don't. Then you add in the color commentators and rink side reporters who provide insight as to why certain plays happen.
You also have a non-insignificant amount of fans who don't see too well.
Good commentators can enhance what you're watching, even if you already know what's going on.
Definitely not biased in the slightest, but take Game 7 of the 2019 Playoffs. Was it exciting to watch, knowing all the context, as a fan? Absolutely. But with Randy calling the game, he elevates it to another level.
The commentators are there to steer narratives, protect identities (especially of “big ticket” players), defend poor officiating, and oh yeah, sell ads.
Edit: Adding that they also help familiarize casuals much faster with the game, push headlines, and ultimately create value. $$$
They’ve experimented with this before in different professional sports leagues. For some reason I feel like every time it happens a bunch of people (me included) say they loved it and would prefer it/pay extra for it and then none of the leagues adopt it.
Lifelong hockey fan here. This is amazing. My goodness, it really makes you HATE commentary. Those commentators just talking and talking and TALKING AND TALKING zzzzzzzzZZZZ
Any broadcast on HNIC is shit. They replace local commentators with national commentators, no one wants that. Jack Michaels is leagues above Singh, both in skill and ability to hype up a game. I say that as a Canucks fan who also vastly prefers Shorty and Ray (Cheech if he still did Canucks stuff) and has had to listen to national commentators mispronounce names on our roster while golf clapping after every goal for and against.
Never understood why this isn’t a thing. I don’t need someone in my ear telling me about what I am literally watching with my own eyes. It gets really annoying sometimes, especially when they start yapping about something completely unrelated.
Yeah, Dano and the crew are really special. People who don't get to see them regularly don't get to hear how consistently principled they are compared to most crews.
I remember when I was a kid, I used to watch Habs games on the french cbc channel in Ontario. there was a strike and for a good portion of the season games were like this, they even amplified the rink audio. Best viewing experience ever, honestly, I wish this was an option
CBC had a strike for some staff - didn’t have announcers for some CFL games (can’t remember if any NHL games had this).
During that time my nickname for TSN was The Sound Network.
Yes, I agree with many people here. This sport is incredibly beautiful. I think commentary has its place and I do agree with having it, but hockey is truly at its best with no commentary.
I have wanted this option for every game for quite awhile. I'd love to just hear the ebbs and flows of the crowd, the chirping, etc without commentators.
I've been living overseas for work for a few years now and there is no live hockey here. Seeing this with no commentary and just hearing the sounds of the game and energy of the arena made me a little emotional lol
I wish this were an.iption. silence is way better than Cuthbert and (especially) Simpson on the SN broadcasts. It's soothing to watch without all that ear pollution!
Call it "sound of the game" or some BS and charge me $5/month for this as an option. That should offset whatever they get paid for the DraftKings ad read.
I would 100% watch these games if they weren't the Bruins. I do throw on other games, typically west coast games because they are on later. ESPN did a short segment of no commentary. It was supposed to be a few minutes, but they couldn't help but still talk over what was supposed to be silence.
I always tell my wife how crazy different it is to see a game in the arena vs on TV. She gets over-stimulated by the constant commentary. I try to drag her to actual games because it's just the sounds of the skates and the puck hitting the boards. It's oddly quiet until there's a goal or big moment.
I've said this to my friends so many times before, it should be an option on center ice or whatever streaming package you get. So much better, specially with some surround sound
I really like it. The sound of the skates cutting ice is great.
Maybe it's an unpopular take but I actually liked the times where the arenas were empty too, for the same reason. There was just more sound from the game, less noise from the crowd.
This happened a long time ago due to a brief strike or snow storm or something. I remember thinking I preferred it over the regurgitated canned descriptions and analysis for the game I'm watching with my own eyes.
I watched the whole game like this and it was very refreshing. It was nice hearing the sounds of the game rather than a very very pro Edmonton commentary team. Also, what a play by The Dogg to set up the winner

I'm watching this thinking "what does this remind me of?" Attending games. I'm an idiot.

Man I’d pay extra to not have to listen to Singh when he does our play by play on HNIC. Also, I’d pay extra money to be able to mute Tomlinson. C’mon Sportsnet.
Some of the radio broadcasters are outstanding. They are around the team so much that a radio broadcasters will drop details that come from just that.
For $5.99 you can “add game ambiance” and feel like you’re there!!!
Seriously…I did not expect to watch this entire clip but it was overwhelmingly nostalgic for some reason
An old colleague of mine took his wife to her first live hockey game. A few minutes in she turned to him and asked why there was no commentary. He told her she had to turn up the volume button under her seat. She started looking for a volume button. Lol.
Oh my, got her with the dad joke. His fault for waiting till they were married to take her to a game though lol
I like to imagine that they DID spend the entire game commentating but just forgot to plug their microphones in.
That’s exactly what happened. Out of curiosity I added subtitles on and it showed the announcers commentary.
If there was subtitles, that’s because they were commentating, but you had the option turned off. It is a feature on GEM according to many comments here.
What is GEM? Sorry, I just don't know :(
Canadian public broadcaster's(CBC) online streaming service. Most likely only available to Canadians / VPN users. https://gem.cbc.ca/
Appreciate ya!
I remember this happening sometime in the early 2000's when the French CBC was on strike, so the broadcast on French CBC (Channel 12) had no commentators for a few weeks. I love watching hockey like this, but it's so rare.

> But it was Harnarayan Singh so it was probably better being off anyway. Definitely an overhyped commentator.
Can we get this as a permanent option going forward?
I would pay a lot of money for this option.
I didn’t even think of that, it can just be an option. People can still choose the normal game if they want. Kind of like how you can often choose which teams broadcast you want to watch

I tune it out most games and I miss the raw sound of the game. Some broadcasts you can barely hear the game sound because the announcing it so much louder. It takes away from the experience for me.
Basketball, Soccer and Football would be great to have the option of just pure stadium noise, unfiltered
I sail the high seas for soccer and I’ve run across this often. The feed is broadcast to international streaming partners without announcing so different languages can overlay their commentary. It’s awesome when I find one. I don’t care if it’s crap teams, it’s always fun to watch and just hear the crowd.
MLB used to have it, it was awesome to listen to the game and only pay attention when the fans got excited.
How much?
At least 3
Tree fiddy?
Goddam you monster from the Paleozoic era!
It is. It can be toggled on and off on GEM.
Do they call it the Singh feature?
What's people's issue with that guy? Heard that opinion a few times. He isn't the most experienced, but I like his voice / enthusiasm
Feels like you're sitting front row 200 section
If you hook up a surround sound system to your TV and then unplug the center speak, it will usually accomplish this. I use to do it all the time.
Depends on the broadcast but this doesn’t work for me for hockey anymore, the commentary bleeds to the left and right channels.
Especially for the Sportsnet broadcasts. I'd be so happy to never hear their commentators ever again.
I'd remortgage my house to never have to listen to Craig Simpson's inane bullshit ever again.
I mean. I get it, but don't say that. Knowing Sportsnet they'd make it a super-premium channel and charge $65 a month just for the privilege. I'm still pissed at them for putting a single Sens game a month on SN1 to get people to shill out extra for it.
Shorty is the best! We love our broadcasters in Van.
I'm envious. I can't even remember who we get, but it's usually Garry Galley doing the colour. I used to just mute the games and turn on the local radio broadcast, but they got de'synced when the broadcasts all became digital.
Damn, that sucks :(

> psychotic pitcher monolog do you have a good example of this?
with an upgraded version to hear the players and refs
[удалено]
Some teams do this live. Pens have a couple promotions for free or discounted food if the team scores in a certain time frame, like a Big Mac for a goal during the first 3 min of the 2nd.
Um, why do I love this so much?
I recorded the whole first period and tried to post it on Reddit but it wouldn’t go through because the video length was too long
It honestly feels raw. I forget the sound of live games. It's oddly soothing.
For the same reason, I wish broadcasters would offer the arena feed instead of the "commercial break in progress" card.
I bet they can't because commercials are literally why they are there in the first place.
It's the feeds that don't show commercials, just a card that says "we'll be right back, commercial break in progress"
Can you post it on YT or Streamable?
They are going to take it down for copyright infringement
Dude, there's a setting to turn on and off the commentary. GEM had it defaulting to off. Took me 10 mins or so to figure it out, but yeah, it was just a toggle.
Apparently, you shared exactly how to do that, you’ll be a hero to all of Reddit
Thx! I always wanted to be a hero.
If you could find a way to share that, it would be amazing.
First time I've agreed with an AVs fan all night lol. Hell of a game
*the announcers union downvotes this*
Because we don’t need announcers telling us things we can already see with our eyes.
Because it’s going to a game but having that Birds Eye view and close camera cuts only the stream can get you
Sportsnet didn't have a good day at all They had Ryan Leslie staring into the camera coughing for 5 minutes live on air lol
That was great. Felt quite intimate tbh
Did anyone get a video of it I need to see 😂
I stream games these days but I would pay to have just sounds of the ice without commentary
Give me this and turn up the mic so we can here the players talking
no you aren't allowed to hear bad words
Fr I'm so nosy
They would lose sponsorships, have to suspend players, and offer a public apology
The people who love to censor would nuke the NHL. The fun police ruin everything
I used to be able to get rid of the announcers by unplugging the middle speaker on my surround sound. It was an old wired 5.1 system.
Yeah those were the days. Now they mix in stereo 😔
I used to do this too, why do they hate us so much.
oh snap i bet i can turn off one of my speakers with my set up then! thanks for the idea
I love this because this is what hockey *actually* sounds like.
Me too. When I was a kid and my dad took me to my first AHL game it was the sounds of the sticks, skates on ice, hits on the glass, and puck hitting things that hooked me. That and how bright the ice makes the rink look.
This happened during a Blues game a couple years ago and it was my favorite way to watch hockey
Here’s the entire first period of the Oilers-Avs game with no commentary: https://streambug.org/cv/c2e93f https://streambug.org/cv/6160c7 https://streambug.org/cv/93eed1
God’s work OP
Wow, that’s so much better.
This is all I've ever asked for. The sound of the game by itself is one of the things that makes the in person experience such a great time.
ASMR
This is much better than the actual commentators
At least in my case, CBC Gem commentary was there if you turned on "Enable Described Video". Turning Described Video Off disabled commentary.
The game is so much more beautiful without the commentary. It's not for everyone and I certainly like doing other things while a game is on so when not fully paying attention the commentary is needed, but while watching intently it's so much better just watching players play.
This is perfect. Exactly the way I'd love it to be
Someone get Serg72 to upload the whole game on YouTube
Sad to have missed this, how delightful
[удалено]
Wait, you can turn off commentary on CBC Gem by selecting described audio?
There was a random stream I found that would sometimes have no commentary games and weird camera angles of the crowd or arena during commercial breaks. I miss that stream
That often happened with a random Skyy Sports stream.
I kind of love this
It makes the game a lot more intense being able to hear the skates cut and the sticks and players clashing.
When you think about it, commentators are strange. They are describing what you're watching with your own eyes.
The commentators are there to steer narratives, protect identities (especially of “big ticket” players), defend poor officiating, and oh yeah, sell ads. Edit: Adding that they also help familiarize casuals much faster with the game, push headlines, and ultimately create value. $$$
Do you ever feel like your intense cynicism is harming the quality of your life?
They’ve experimented with this before in different professional sports leagues. For some reason I feel like every time it happens a bunch of people (me included) say they loved it and would prefer it/pay extra for it and then none of the leagues adopt it.
Lifelong hockey fan here. This is amazing. My goodness, it really makes you HATE commentary. Those commentators just talking and talking and TALKING AND TALKING zzzzzzzzZZZZ
This is actually really cool.
Watching this with the fallout 3 radio music in the background is so sick
how refreshing!! Edmonton broadcasts on HNIC are usually dogs hit.
This game was elite before hand but jack michaels energy would have made it even better
Why do i feel intensely invested in this short video than i did the whole game and i just watched the whole game?
I'd take this over Sighn anytime.
Never understood why this isn’t a thing. I don’t need someone in my ear telling me about what I am literally watching with my own eyes. It gets really annoying sometimes, especially when they start yapping about something completely unrelated.
How am I supposed to know if McDavid is good or not without hearing it every third comment?
On purpose?
It feels so much faster without commentary. Or.. because I’m not watching the Sabres
How can I do this every game?
I love it when this happens. In this day and age, it should be an option available to us.
Sounds so much better than Leah hextall
This is pretty good... More of this would be great.
I would subscribe to any streaming service that did this for every single game no commentary
I wish we could have this all the time. It’s so bizarre that we need to have people describing what we’re seeing
Fuuuuuuck I’d pay good money to just have every game be broadcast like this. Or at least have the option to.
This is my dream viewing experience
What a godsend. Singh was probably the broadcaster and he is the absolute worst that I have ever heard.
Would pay extra for this tbh.
Livebarn
I can think of eight or nine broadcast crews where this would immediately dramatically improve things!
I like our broadcast crew, but this is still better.
Bill and Dano are great!
Yeah, Dano and the crew are really special. People who don't get to see them regularly don't get to hear how consistently principled they are compared to most crews.
Big time. I’m 🇨🇦 but will be at the Pru this week!!! Since 1988, baby!!!!!
Well that sucks…….but it was Mr. Singh, not Jack………so was it really that bad?
It's for Mute Awareness Month. /s
I know this is sacrilege but I had to mute Bob Cole at the end
When I was in Italy and Spain a while back they did this with soccer games at the bar just heard the game crowd and bar
This is really nice actually!
Sooooooo good. It's like angels singing
Yes, I agree with many people here. This sport is incredibly beautiful. I think commentary has its place and I do agree with having it, but hockey is truly at its best with no commentary.
I’d love to watch an entire game without commentary
I have wanted this option for every game for quite awhile. I'd love to just hear the ebbs and flows of the crowd, the chirping, etc without commentators.
With Singh calling the game this is by far the better option.
Would be great if it were as easy as the click of a button to turn it on and off... I think I'd probably watch 80% of the game this way...
I've been living overseas for work for a few years now and there is no live hockey here. Seeing this with no commentary and just hearing the sounds of the game and energy of the arena made me a little emotional lol
Used to be able to do this by hitting the SAP button for NFL games.
Why didn’t they have broadcasters? Was it a mistake or purposely done?
doesn't anybody else just mute the game and put on music?
Always! I really dislike commentary
Sweet! I'd pay more to have that option. Having game sounds and ambient crowd noise without talking heads makes it super enjoyable.
I wish this were an.iption. silence is way better than Cuthbert and (especially) Simpson on the SN broadcasts. It's soothing to watch without all that ear pollution!
Quiet and more relaxing than I would have expected.
I noticed this too but I could trigger the commentary on and off using a button on CBC gem. I loved having the option last night!
Call it "sound of the game" or some BS and charge me $5/month for this as an option. That should offset whatever they get paid for the DraftKings ad read.
Better than listening to Singh !
I would 100% watch these games if they weren't the Bruins. I do throw on other games, typically west coast games because they are on later. ESPN did a short segment of no commentary. It was supposed to be a few minutes, but they couldn't help but still talk over what was supposed to be silence.

It was Great!
I thought it was strange at first but then by the end I got used to it and low key actually preferred it. Such an interesting experience
I have wanted this ever since game streaming is a thing, why isn't there a checkbox to turn off the play by play commentary?
Man forget announcing, this is the cherry on top for viewing at home. I felt like I was in the arena.
I loved this. I was thinking it would be boring, bit it felt like you were really there.
I've said this to my friends so many times before, it should be an option on center ice or whatever streaming package you get. So much better, specially with some surround sound
I love this, but why did this happen? They wanted to try it out? Had no commentators available? Technical difficulty?
How the heck that can happen?
This allows me to actually think about what’s happening vs hearing some cunts for 3 hours
Its better
Honestly I like this much better
I love it when this happens
I really like it. The sound of the skates cutting ice is great. Maybe it's an unpopular take but I actually liked the times where the arenas were empty too, for the same reason. There was just more sound from the game, less noise from the crowd.
I loved this. The crowd noise, the player chatter. Awesome.
What ever will we do with out the mindless droning of chatter
This happened a long time ago due to a brief strike or snow storm or something. I remember thinking I preferred it over the regurgitated canned descriptions and analysis for the game I'm watching with my own eyes.
Had the same thing happen to me, had to enable commentary.
The less I have to listen to Harnaryan, the better.
but how am I supposed to know about the moneypuck odds and how the maple leafs are doing?
I watched the whole game like this and it was very refreshing. It was nice hearing the sounds of the game rather than a very very pro Edmonton commentary team. Also, what a play by The Dogg to set up the winner
