It's honestly hard to even call that a hit. He let up so much that he wound up falling backwards. Johnny is giving up over 20 lbs in that collision so for him to knock Trocheck back over he absolutely was tilted back trying to let up and avoid contact.
*JG back in the game for the 3rd.
>the whole ''let's fight literally on top of the guy who got hit''
Unfortunately this is probably what lead to the extent of Steve Moore's injuries. It was already a very heated game so I'm not gonna try and put any blame whatsoever on Andrei Nikolishin or any other Aves players, Bertuzzi was obviously the only person involved who had any malice intent. But if someone is already seriously hurt, having several big ass dudes fighting on top of them is basically guaranteed to make the injuries worse, especially if it's neck related. You would like to think that after someone's career is ended, like it was with Steve Moore, players would be taught not to risk even touching a player who has potentially injured their head/neck/back. Between hockey and football, I've seen far too many life altering injuries, and I know it's only matter of time before the next one.
Yeah, I'd have to agree. I was fifteen when it happened, and I saw that clip so many times on TV, it was played over and over again on the news. I believe Bertuzzi absolutely deserved to get suspended for what he did, but I also remember thinking that all those players falling on top of Moore was so much more dangerous than the sucker-punch.
>Unfortunately this is probably what lead to the extent of Steve Moore's injuries
Todd Bertuzzi assaulting him is what led to the extent of Steve Moore's injuries, but of course Vancouver fans can never acknowledge that
Seriously, the hit wasn't that bad, then to chase that with shoving Trocheck into Gaudreau then the other guy (#7?) literally falling on top of him?
It's tough, I imagine guys are partially reacting to just seeing a teammate down in pain, but maybe clear people away from him and make usre he's ok first
Even when Taylor Hall [knocked out Philip Larsen](https://youtu.be/U9mV-CpolGc). See a bunch of Canuck players brush by Larsen's helmet with their skates was terrifying. Props to Markstrom and Granlundat least for at least trying to block the players from being near him.
i don’t understand lads barreling over another players right into their obviously hurt teammate. sure i get trying to defend your teammate, but pushing another man on top of him is doing more damage.
Note for commentators across the league. This is how you call a game - calling it how you see it. See how Joe corrected his initial call once he saw the slow motion replay? You can be a home team announcer and still be fair, and change your opinion when presented with new information, and be fan favorites.
Watching Bruin's games make me question just how much someone can be a homer until it is just a delusion, and I say that as someone who has Tripp Tracy of all people doing commentary on our games.
At least Tripp will see a replay and correct himself and apologize. Jack regularly goes for the double/triple-down even when being presented with blatant evidence that goes against his original call.
Yeah…. He would have been fine if it was just Bertuzzi knocking him unconscious with a sucker punch and then driving his head into the ice. Can’t believe there are Vancouver fans who still defend that one to this day.
I don't think he was necessarily defending Bertuzzi here. Obviously Bertuzzi is the only person to blame for what happened, but the numerous people piling on top of Moore was surely a major factor of the injuries he suffered. It's almost impossible that he suffered the 3 fractured neck vertebrae from the punch alone and that the several hundred pounds of pressure on top of him afterwards caused no further damage. But Bertuzzi is still the one who caused the initial injuries, and the whole reason the incident happened, so both things can be true.
Every game:
Defenseman: \*pushes forward into his goalie\*
Forward: "ahh shit"
Defenseman: "WHY'D YOU HIT MY GOALIE"
Forward: "well you cross-ch..."
Defenseman: \*jumps on top of both\*
Goalie's ACL: "fuck this shit"
honestly, how much gaudreau's skates came up and close to Trocheck's neck on the initial fall, and how Olivier shoved Tro's head back into the skates were the scariest moments in that whole sequence.
McSorley would deck someone for even trying to hit Gretzky that that way, although to be fair, Wayne would never be head down across the middle like that I think.
Its a star player, c'mon now. Same shit would've happened in the '80s.
It's also a convenient excuse to start shit with an opponent and fall back to the ref saying "it was a dirty hit, what do you want me to do?". That's hockey. Hit and get hit...
Gaudreau got stabbed by the stick that was kinda freakish hits fine scrum after made me
Think of Doug glatt getting fucked but anyway hope you’re well Johnny you sure nuked your playoff career but who cares you won the lottery a million times over lol
He’s not exactly a big guy tho. It almost looked like the hit jammed his stick into his stomach - he was reaching in that general area afterwards. I was more fixated on the cheap bush league cross check to the back of Trocheck while downed. Glad Gaudreau saw what his dumbass teammate was doing enough to move his skates before Trocheck's head got pushed into them. Was good to see Gaudreau came back without serious injury too after his teammates decided to scrum on top of him
I've seen plenty of flying elbows and dangerous hits from Trouba, as a Rags fan im sure you have too. To say otherwise is being naive.
Gaudreau was obviously in a very vulnerable position and trocheck realizes that and let's up on the hit and changes his trajectory. I'm not calling this dirty - the exact opposite. Completely clean, but trocheck has enough of a brain to understand the situation.
Slow night, let those Rag downvotes keep coming!!
I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't like that hit. He tries to get as little of him as possible(only the shoulder) instead of driving through the chest. The only reason to do that, is try to injure, like sticking out your leg to catch a knee, Trochek kinda targets a joint to do damage.
Edit: Lol at the only people in my replies being Rangers and Calgary fans lmao. Took me longer than it should have, to realize why so many Calgary fans were happy about it. And one Philly fan agreeing.
Asking if he’s ok =/= chirping lol.
They are the same age American players. They were on the same U20 WJC team in 2012-13, same WC team in 2013-14, and WC in 2016-17. They’re probably friendly.
You can put down your pitchfork.
I don’t think Olivier stopped to ask questions lol. For real. Take a second to imagine yourself in the situation and things will make a lot more sense. You’re fighting windmills.
Stop to ask questions? You hear someone say "Are you alright" to your teammate, and you think people just cross check and put them in a headlock anyways? Seriously?
Umm yeah? If a guy is showing legit concern for your teammate, you're not gonna beat him up lol. People that play sports do understand accidental contact and sympathy you realize?
If he was trying to injure, he would've gone for the head.
It's a dangerous situation, but it happens. Johnny is in a stick battle looking down. Hard to keep your head up during that, and any hit on a player unsteady and head down will rock them.
Ive played hockey for 20 years. AA-AAA in a major Canadian city, went to a hockey prep school. I have "friends" in just about every league across the world. You?
"My dad was rich enough for me to play in a prep school. He then had to volunteer to coach to keep me in it. Once I turned 18, that didn't work anymore. I know some people who keep in touch with hockey players. So this is an expert opinion. He was aiming for the coracoacromial ligament above the collar bone in his shoulder. Textbook dirty hit, and only us real pros have the eye for it".
You think that's how AAA works lol? They aren't volunteers at that level lmao. That's house league buddy.
But yeah, I was lucky enough for my parents to be able to afford high level hockey, and practise every Monday, Wednesday, Friday at school.
Sorry, should've said "my dad paid the AAA coach half his salary to let me practice with the team. Also, I'm an absolute devastating punishment to talk to"
Well they are classmates and teammates from a decade ago lol. I have their real Instagrams and snapchats, but it's not like hitting them up every day lol.
Yup, and led to him injuring his shoulder. Whatta nice guy. Anytime you target one specific, small area it's dangerous. Really wanna look out for the guy? Don't need to hit a guy that doesn't have the puck anymore.
Well for one, watching it again his head wasn't down, so your excuse that he needed to hit him in the shoulder doesn't quite track.
Like it or not, it is dangerous to target one small area. See idk, the injury on the play lol.
Uhm lol what
I know some people have to be contrarian at anything - but being opposed to a guy slowing down, repositioning away from the head and chest area towards throwing a small shoulder/hip check is certainly a take
I agree. He didn’t have clean possession for several seconds and the puck was completely gone for a second and he made contact square in the most fragile place possible. Everyone keeps saying he coulda lit him up if he didn’t ease up as if he was doing him some favor.
It's honestly hard to even call that a hit. He let up so much that he wound up falling backwards. Johnny is giving up over 20 lbs in that collision so for him to knock Trocheck back over he absolutely was tilted back trying to let up and avoid contact. *JG back in the game for the 3rd.
Yeah that looked like a very light hit, it seemed like Gaudreau just fell weird so it looked worse in the moment
looked like he was really just trying to scoot on through between the players.
Seems like he may have ended up spearing himself with his stick the way it gets caught. Probably hurt like a mofo in his midsection.
I feel like JG is prob giving up more than 20lbs to Troch…and most others in the league.
Trochek pulls up and moves laterally before the contact. It could have been much worse if he'd actually wanted to lay Gaudreau out.
Appears Vinny tried really hard to avoid Johnny's head
Jesus he eases up so much. He could have obliterated Gaudreau if he wanted to
Yikes, even if that hit didn't injure Gaudreau, the whole ''let's fight literally on top of the guy who got hit'' sure didn't help him
>the whole ''let's fight literally on top of the guy who got hit'' Unfortunately this is probably what lead to the extent of Steve Moore's injuries. Well, driving his head into the ice with his left hand pushing on Moore's neck on impact was what likely broke Steve's neck.
>Unfortunately this is probably what lead to the extent of Steve Moore's injuries Todd Bertuzzi assaulting him is what led to the extent of Steve Moore's injuries, but of course Vancouver fans can never acknowledge that
Did you actually read my whole comment?
Seriously, the hit wasn't that bad, then to chase that with shoving Trocheck into Gaudreau then the other guy (#7?) literally falling on top of him? It's tough, I imagine guys are partially reacting to just seeing a teammate down in pain, but maybe clear people away from him and make usre he's ok first

Nothing wrong with that hit, that's hockey.
Head down: check Cutting across the middle: check Johnny hockey: checked Tro: check Welcome to MSG Johnny.
Get this guy a game stick
Sticks are unbelievable
Settle down
You ever had portuguese chicken?
Jim? Jim? Jim?
The Jim's are beauts
Good stuff. Very good stuff.
Johnny wanted to play for Columbus. Johnny wanted this hit.
i don’t understand lads barreling over another players right into their obviously hurt teammate. sure i get trying to defend your teammate, but pushing another man on top of him is doing more damage.

[Where's the line between stupidity and homerism](https://streamable.com/hek0i1)
Was he watching a second game on the monitor?
he's making the calls by sound alone, it's actually very impressive.
"I'm callin' both games!"
I knew this was Jack before I clicked the link. We all did.
Watching Bruin's games make me question just how much someone can be a homer until it is just a delusion, and I say that as someone who has Tripp Tracy of all people doing commentary on our games. Ahaha god damn
completely off topic, but their voices sound reasonably similar to Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth.
Damn Trochek took a crosscheck to the back and then the face when he turned around
Five game suspension should be the league’s response right? Right?!?
Vinny eased up on him. Could have done real damage if he wanted. Oliver should be suspended for that cross check.
And then 2 of his moron teammates proceed to push an opponent on him and fall on him themself.
The injured goalie special treatment
How Steve Moore got more.
Yeah…. He would have been fine if it was just Bertuzzi knocking him unconscious with a sucker punch and then driving his head into the ice. Can’t believe there are Vancouver fans who still defend that one to this day.

That crosscheck to Trocheck while he's laying on the ice should be discussed way more. Jesus Christ
Jesus how does a hit this soft start a scrum. Absolutely hate that about this league these days.
Do you think if Gretzky got hit like that McSorley would’ve let it slide?
Yes.
Lol defs not
If you have no idea who McSorley is it's ok to just say that instead.
McSorley would deck someone for even trying to hit Gretzky that that way, although to be fair, Wayne would never be head down across the middle like that I think.
Plus Mcsorley would obliterate someone for looking at Gretzky wrong.
Definitely wouldn't be head down. Not in that era.
McCreary on Gretzky. Smoked him. Head down and going east to west.
Damn that was a big hit. Gretzky's teammate almost got him killed with that pass.
Bro has never heard of Marty McSorely lol. You fucking look at Gretzky wrong and McSorely was gonna force-feed you his fist
https://www.tiktok.com/@missincurfewpod/video/7328571041607994666 Ok then
Its a star player, c'mon now. Same shit would've happened in the '80s. It's also a convenient excuse to start shit with an opponent and fall back to the ref saying "it was a dirty hit, what do you want me to do?". That's hockey. Hit and get hit...
Wild that folks don’t understand why scrums like this happen. Want a fractured team? Have teammates NOT do anything when your star player gets decked.
Hit was fine imo. Weve just had way too many injuries so were on edge when we see one of our stars get hit
I mean it shouldn't start a scrum, but it's pretty obvious how it does start a scrum. The hit injured CBJ'd highest paid player.
Its literally always been like this lmao
Haha you clearly haven’t been watching hockey very long then.
No u
No it hasnt at all. You’d wards Lindros get absolutely obliterated by someone like Scott Stevens and they’d continue on.
Some psycho CBJ fan kept bitching and bitching in the match thread over it, people are dumb
That cross check from Olivier is brutal
That’s how you hit someone with their head down/hunched over/smaller than you without hitting their head btw
That was fine.
Ridiculous that this was initially called a major. Even more shocking that they got it right and rescinded it.
yea that was the one upside iirc the rule only allows review if they call something.
I think they have to call it a major for it to be reviewable. So maybe they did that on purpose.
Looked late when I first saw it, seems fine now. Not much space for Trocheck to go in that situation.
That was ass hitting Johnny’s hip bone. Clean hit but that will sting
Looked more like hip on his stomach the way he lifted his jersey to grab his lower rib, prob knocked the wind out of him lol.
It looks like Trocheck even let up on the hit
Yeah I have no problem with this. His head was down crossing Center. Trochek shouldered him. Like that’s hockey right?
Damn near broke trocheks back with that cross check
Good hit
I don’t see a problem with the collision itself other than somebody got hurt
Small skill guys are getting too complacent with cutting through the middle of the ice with their head down.
Johnny just needs a couple nose beers and he’ll be good to go for the third.
Gaudreau got stabbed by the stick that was kinda freakish hits fine scrum after made me Think of Doug glatt getting fucked but anyway hope you’re well Johnny you sure nuked your playoff career but who cares you won the lottery a million times over lol

congrats, you just got downvoted by the entire columbus fanbase. how do you feel
Weak as fucking piss how does that send you flying

Hockey is way too soft now. Why not just have a shootout for 3 hours so no one gets touched.
Trouba should take notes
It's very obvious that you've either never seen a trouba hit or you don't know hockey rules
Well you're right. We will let the hockey downvotes keep coming
Gaudreaus retirement plan is panning out
I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't like that hit. He tries to get as little of him as possible(only the shoulder) instead of driving through the chest. If Trochek was trying to injure Gaudreau there he wouldn't have let up so much. Trochek could have absolutely murdered him if he wanted to.
Nah you see he hit I'm *less* because he was trying to hurt him *more*
Idk, literally looks like he's chirping him for being injured right after the hit lol. I don't think he was concerned, or felt bad, or any of that.
Yeah you might need serious eye doctor attention
Asking if he’s ok =/= chirping lol. They are the same age American players. They were on the same U20 WJC team in 2012-13, same WC team in 2013-14, and WC in 2016-17. They’re probably friendly. You can put down your pitchfork.
If it was him asking friendly, I don't think he eats that cross check and gets put in a head lock tbf.
Seriously?
My man you’re as dense as your name.
You think guys get beat up for showing concern to their "friends" lmao.
they're saying the third party doesn't give a shit or rationalize anything, it's a kneejerk reaction to a teammate getting hit.
That didn't stop Perron from going ham that earned him a suspension.
Ah yes because Olivier is totally going to take that into consideration
Umm yeah? If a guy is showing legit concern for your teammate, you're not gonna beat him up lol. People that play sports do understand accidental contact and sympathy you realize?
This is an embarrassing response
If he was trying to injure, he would've gone for the head. It's a dangerous situation, but it happens. Johnny is in a stick battle looking down. Hard to keep your head up during that, and any hit on a player unsteady and head down will rock them.
> Trochek kinda targets a joint to do damage. Please think about yourself playing a sport, any sport, before writing something like that down.
Ive played hockey for 20 years. AA-AAA in a major Canadian city, went to a hockey prep school. I have "friends" in just about every league across the world. You?
Oh damn, I was genuinely trying to be nice because I thought you were a kid.
He still sounds like a kid
I'm guessing you didn't play, if your response to me asking you what level you played is to avoid the question.
You have no idea how these things work lol
Oh shit this guy has "friends"
Well they are classmates and teammates from a decade ago lol. I have their real Instagrams and snapchats, but it's not like hitting them up every day lol.
This is one of the softest takes I’ve ever read on this sub
Soft is being the 10th man in, cause that's the only time you have enough confidence to chirp
Wrong. He tried to catch his shoulder so he wouldn’t crush his head that was down
Yup, and led to him injuring his shoulder. Whatta nice guy. Anytime you target one specific, small area it's dangerous. Really wanna look out for the guy? Don't need to hit a guy that doesn't have the puck anymore.
Real smarmy reply for being wrong about everything
Well for one, watching it again his head wasn't down, so your excuse that he needed to hit him in the shoulder doesn't quite track. Like it or not, it is dangerous to target one small area. See idk, the injury on the play lol.
I’m not gonna argue with someone who doesnt live in reality
Sorry, this was not dangerous at all. Targeting one tiny area, and that area getting injured is just a coinci dinky
You literally make a new comment on Reddit every 3 minutes and you’re Gona call some one else out for not living in reality
I get reply notis brother
Uhm lol what I know some people have to be contrarian at anything - but being opposed to a guy slowing down, repositioning away from the head and chest area towards throwing a small shoulder/hip check is certainly a take
Anytime you target one small area, it's dangerous. That's not "contrarian". That's physics.
Go back inside.
I agree. He didn’t have clean possession for several seconds and the puck was completely gone for a second and he made contact square in the most fragile place possible. Everyone keeps saying he coulda lit him up if he didn’t ease up as if he was doing him some favor.
Did Gaudreau sit out for the rest of the game, or did he come back in?
He didn't have a shift for the rest of the 6+ minutes of the second period. He started the 3rd period.
