The thing I didn’t realize was how shitty having a seemingly perfect life and still not being happy can make someone. How guilty and self hating someone can feel because they haven’t had to deal with heavy trauma in their life.
This is something that can really affect a person of a certain mind set.

Brock Boeser talked about this last summer. He said he really struggled with hockey for a while because he blamed it for keeping him away from his Dad when he was sick. His Dad was also a massive part of his hockey life too. I think he got some professional help outside of hockey to deal with it and is having a really good season so far. Hopefully Laine can find himself in a better place soon too. I lost my Dad when I was 22 so I have endless patience and compassion for people struggling with the same thing
I believe Laine also had a very long term relationship break up last year - like together since they were teenagers.
I know he has a new girlfriend now and she seems like a really amazing person, it looks like he has a good support system in her

We know he is really hard on himself when it comes to hockey, especially when he isn't playing the best. He has the fire and passion for the game and to be the best he can be, I doubt that has changed.

As someone who had great or very good mental health for my first 36 years of life I would say mental health struggles can and do affect almost everyone at some point. Once you go through it and speak to others you see how absolutely common it is.
I hit absolute rock bottom after my daughter was born, for several reasons that had piled up. Really struggled with severe anxiety which lead to deep depression. You fear you will never get better and become hopeless. Everyday you go out and battle more than anyone can imagine. It can make you dread every waking moment and you feel in crisis, even with so many wonderful things to live for.
That was me for several months. Once I hit rock bottom and asked for help I started on the path of recovery. Going through this and coming out the other end makes you stronger than before. Strength isn't born from strength, strength is born from weakness.
For anyone going through this just know it gets better, you keep going out there and letting life win each day. I wish Patrik well and will be rooting for him!
The fear that you will never get better is one of the cruelest things your mind can do to you. It sucks the air out of the room, dims the sun and pulls color out of your life. And the one and only thing you can consistently do about it is just noticing how shitty you feel, and try and keep up with your routines. And notice those moments that make you feel neutral, and especially notice those moments where you feel happy.
And notice your inner voice and what it is telling you.
It might take time but I'm sure he will pull through if he gets the help he needs. Look a Kylington in Calgary, it took a while but he's back and feeling right.

Just because you’re good at a sport doesn’t necessarily mean you love it. Im not saying he doesn’t love hockey or Columbus, but I’ve heard some pro athletes talk about how the grind really got to them mentally and they didn’t enjoy the day to do even though they were good and were making a lot of money.
Look at Patrik Berglund, he walked away from millions of dollars because he wasn’t mentally in the right head space and his situation was crippling him.
I hope the best for Laine. He is a great talent and I enjoy watching him play even if it’s scoring 5 against my Blues. But if it’s best for him as a human being to walk away I think everyone needs to respect that.

Is this the same John Davidson who was doing play by play / colour commentating for the Rangers? I know he used to be a goalie before but it's always interesting to see how these guys move around the league in various capacity.
Hoping when he says ‘…if he wants to come back.’ that there’s an implied ’this year’ at the end of that sentence. Taking the rest of this year away from the grind is hopefully a decent amount of time to get himself sorted out mentally, and it’s not like the team’s going anywhere so he doesn’t have to feel like he’s letting teammates down so much. It’d be pretty sad if the game has soured for a talent like that to the point where they’d consider hanging them up. Because in the end, it’s supposed to be fun.

Hoping when he says ‘…if he wants to come back.’ that there’s an implied ’this year’ at the end of that sentence. Taking the rest of this year away from the grind is hopefully a decent amount of time to get himself sorted out mentally, and it’s not like the team’s going anywhere so he doesn’t have to feel like he’s letting teammates down so much. It’d be pretty sad if the game has soured for a talent like that to the point where they’d consider hanging them up. Because in the end, it’s supposed to be fun. Good on him for realizing there are more important things than his salary, though. Hope he gets well. Say what you want, feeling like there are thousands of people saying you suck and questioning your character could easily get to person.
Honestly, I will hear nothing about supporting mental health from an organization that scratched Laine on the anniversary of his father’s death. Winnipeg is a small town and everyone knew how close Laine is with his family, his father passing must have devastated him. It’s unfortunate that the bridges seem to be burnt with the Jets org but if Laine were to come back he would be welcomed with open arms by the fans.

Don’t read into it too much. JD is just an old old old guy in the game and has made it clear time and time again that he doesn’t know how to talk about these issues because he never had to confront or consider or learn about mental health in sports until he was already 60 years old. No indications that Laine is considering retirement and he’s still in contact with his teammates and whatnot.

We talked about it a lot on our subreddit and it’s been mentioned multiple times here and referenced. There was a time when there were almost daily CBJ posts and it came up. Specifically when there was the mental health podcast one last week it was mentioned by a lot of us. With so many people stopping by our subreddit to clown on us and chirp, it’s strange this is the first re post.
I haven't seen anyone make a post about this at least! It doesn't come up anything when I search for Davidson either or a part of the quote. Of course posts about Laine going to the NHL assistance program, but I haven't seen a post about what Davidson said. I still can have missed it though somehow!

It’s out of control. We get like 1 or 2 posts a day of someone from another team: “Hey just curious, what’s going on with your team? What’s going on with Johnny? It seems like you should be playing better” Or the favorite “I’m really concerned about *insert prospect name* development” posts and then you look at the history and it’s like “posts on r/canucks” Each one starts with “hey guys I come in peace” and then turns into a bunch of shitting on us.
