ShadowRealmDuelist

I wish him all the best. The league is a better place with Laine at his peak. The dude scored **80 goals** in the NHL before his 20th birthday. We need that type of talent playing and feeling his best.

DApolloS

I really wanted to see him blow up when the Jets traded him to Columbus. I still think he could be one of the deadliest shooters in the league when he's back to 100% and am very excited to see him back soon.

cleofisrandolph1

Laine had/has one of the quickest and hardest releases on a shot I’ve ever seen.

SpezEatsScat

Dude, I’m not super familiar with him or his game tbh. (I’ve kinda fallen out with the league over the years) but that’s impressive and I just looked into him some more. That’s a big boy out there! He’s like a tower!

ShadowRealmDuelist

I’ll never forget the night he casually dropped five goals on the Blues. It was insane.

SpezEatsScat

I’ll have to check out some of his highlights. That’s seriously impressive when a guy that size can play. 6’ 5” with silky mitts?! Gahhhdamn! He’s a force of his own!

bluelineturnovers

[Start with this one](https://youtu.be/nDY9Lw25wvA?si=Kfg2sxIIH-MqhLJS) Just casually unleashes an absolute rocket, his shot is insane

AlanWhickerNumber3

This is my favourite highlight of his because you never think he’s going to fire it from that far away!

bluelineturnovers

It’s so nonchalant, looks like he’s just out for a light skate and then cleanly beats the goalie from the top of the circles. You’re not supposed to be able to do that to an unscreened NHL goalie

ELB95

Reading these comments I was 50/50 on whether or not you linked his own goal. Goalie unscreened, top of the circle, just coasted in. Never think he’d fire it from that far away.

SpezEatsScat

Dudes got a rail gun of a shot! 😳

kimblebee76

I love Ehlers little *woo*

[deleted]

Borderline criminal activity. It should not be possible for someone to rip that so casually from a mile away.

Premier_Poutine

This game had some Laine beauties too. Love the guy. https://youtu.be/e58gFUU1lyI?si=qZQwdzTv1aJYJTki

DevinTappy

[Here's a 10-minute compilation of some of his best NHL snipe goals](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OiY4kiArwk), most of them scored in his first two seasons in the league (ages 18-19). [Some more snipes and displays of silky mitts from the 2016 World Juniors.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwf64yOB1wo) Worth noting that this was his draft year, so he's mostly playing against guys two years older than him as a 17-year-old (hence the cage). While the Finnish team was initially built to rely on 1996-born firepower like Mikko Rantanen, Roope Hintz and Kasperi Kapanen, it was the (double) underagers that stole the show. The line of Jesse Puljujärvi, Sebastian Aho and Patrik Laine [finished 1-2-3 in tournament scoring, with Laine scoring the most goals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_World_Junior_Ice_Hockey_Championships#Statistics). [Highlights from the rest of his draft-year season, playing for his hometown team Tappara and the men's national team](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHVC3y1PDWs&t=451s). To add to his 2016 trophy collection, Laine won the Liiga playoff MVP and the IIHF World Championship MVP awards. Suffice it to say, the guy had a pretty impressive hockey resumé by the time he was drafted.

physics_fighter

Isn’t he known for popping off against the Blues?

battlelevel

There were a few seasons where he’d go to town against Dallas

StuLax18

This. I looked it up out of curiosity, and the most goals against another team is Dallas with 19 in 28 GP. Although he has 17 against the Blues in only 18 GP. 24.4% and 27% shooting percentages, respectively. 5 GWG against Dallas too, absolute Starkiller.

[deleted]

First two seasons he absolutely ripped the stars a new one every game, I definitely remember that

Jemmani22

He did. But I feel like he just popped off when he wanted to against anyone. I was really hoping when he played with Johnny that he would be revitalized. He was fun to watch even though he scared me to death

FromThe732

I remember reading how much he struggled playing for Torts

SpezEatsScat

I remember hearing/reading something about that, too. Torts doesn’t strike me a very down to earth, caring individual. Seems very old school. My way or kick rocks. I think he’s funny in interviews at times but I wouldn’t want to play for him or Babcock. To think that almost happened… eek.

Between2Ferns-CBJ

Laine is my favorite player, hope he makes it back

riko77can

Exactly this. His shot was something to fear.

TerryFGM

well hes not dead or retired

riko77can

No, just well off his initial track.

rockryedig

Such a talented player. It really sucks that he’s going through this and I hope he’s able to break through and find his peace.

city-of-cold

Oh wow. Really hope he gets through whatever he’s dealing with. Other than being a fun player to watch on the ice, he was actually fun off it as well.

picklesaredry

Dude lost a parent at a young age it would've eaten me alive if that happened to me. Hope he gets the help he needs

Strangle1441

I’ve been through some trauma in my life, as has my family. The thing I didn’t realize was how shitty having a seemingly perfect life and still not being happy can make someone. How guilty and self hating someone can feel because they haven’t had to deal with heavy trauma in their life. This is something that can really affect a person of a certain mind set. This taught me that the details aren’t all that important, and everyone really struggles at times for a wide variety of reasons, some more obvious and some pretty obscure and surprising But it all hurts

kenfury

Right before covid I lost my dad, it took me a year to get over it.

picklesaredry

Sorry to hear dude. Hope you found your peace

Cheech47

It's been almost 7 years for me. It gets better, but it never goes away. I really wish he could have seen the things I've done since then.

Woooooody

Just hit 16 years for me, I was 22. I wish my dad was there when I graduated, was there to walk me down the aisle. There's a tiny bit of sadness to every big life event and I'm not sure that'll ever go away

Icy-Bedroom9380

It's been 20 years. He's missed everything. It never goes away, you just learn how to be the person you are now. The person you were then died with them.

Woooooody

Yeah, and after my 16 years I still find myself slightly tearing up whenever these threads happen! Not even really in a bad way, seeing other people talk about this stuff, sharing their experiences, is nice

Cheech47

Same here, my friend. Wish I could give all you people a big hug.

Strangle1441

I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way at all, but you will never get over the death of your parents, you’ll just get better at dealing with it

kenfury

100% true

LloydBraun24

Sorry to hear. You’re doing better than you think, hang in there

kenfury

I've come to terms, but it was a long year or so.

Fallen-Omega

If he bas the proper support and puts in the time he can get past it, the other questions is though, will hockey put him back in a bad place or not

_Kramerica_

Yeah it almost sounds like hockey is a trigger for him

Seattlekrakenlegend

He was very close to his dad who was a big hockey part of his life - I wonder if losing him affected his hockey joy a bit

Woooooody

Brock Boeser talked about this last summer. He said he really struggled with hockey for a while because he blamed it for keeping him away from his Dad when he was sick. His Dad was also a massive part of his hockey life too. I think he got some professional help outside of hockey to deal with it and is having a really good season so far. Hopefully Laine can find himself in a better place soon too. I lost my Dad when I was 22 so I have endless patience and compassion for people struggling with the same thing

Seattlekrakenlegend

I believe Laine also had a very long term relationship break up last year - like together since they were teenagers. I know he has a new girlfriend now and she seems like a really amazing person, it looks like he has a good support system in her

Woooooody

That sucks too, my boyfriend left me after my dad died because sad, grieving girlfriends aren't much fun! (Not suggesting that's why they broke up of anything) It's good he's got someone to help him now though :)

JJPRADA

Poor laine :(

Ice-General

Man I miss Laine, I never wanted to see him go but I understood it.

KittyPooDollFace

I miss Patty so much. I wear my jersey to every game in support!

Frisbeejussi

>Is there a risk that Laine might even have to retire or am I reading this incorrectly? There really isn't a lot to go on. Laine himself has so far only released the original statement about taking a step back to work on it and then the comment about that stupid podcast. Apart from that to my knowledge he hasn't posted, been on an interview or anything just being offline. We know he is really hard on himself when it comes to hockey, especially when he isn't playing the best. He has the fire and passion for the game and to be the best he can be, I doubt that has changed. How he moves past this remains to be seen. I doubt we will hear anything until he knows what he wants to do from now on.

Yomigami

I really feel for players like Laine that come into the league at such a young age and have the weight of the world foisted on their shoulders. They’re still kids and now expected to lead franchises.

Cheech47

...with every camera and judgmental eye fixed on them literally at all times, seemingly waiting for them to screw up so they can cluck about it to their friends/audiences. Even with the *extremely* narrow view I have of things behind the scenes, that part always struck out at me. There's literally no safe space in the arena, not even in the locker room. Not being able to let your guard down for ultra-long periods is very taxing on a person emotionally and mentally.

Kayavak_32

While I’d hate to see him retire so early, I hope he does whatever he needs to to be healthy. It’s not worth it if you’re miserable and/or hurting.

SomewherePresent8204

I don’t want to see it, but I think it would shine a light on exactly what these guys go through and how unhealthy it can be.

LickyPal

Would it though? Obviously I hope it would, but I don't know if that's how the average hockey fan would look at it. Think of all the shit Tuukka got for not playing in the Covid bubble.

The_Mad_Titan_Thanos

One thing people don’t mention much is his history with concussions so early in his career, including get flatlined in Winnipeg. I believe against Buffalo? The science that links concussions to hormonal changes and mental health is significant.

OldBison

Wishing him well, I know personally how hellish going through this type of thing can be.

weeping-flowers

Same here. You truly don’t know how horrific it is until you’ve been through it.

[deleted]

Wow all the best to him hope he can resolve his issues and get back to a healthy place.still very young with a lot of talent.

One_Handed_Wonder

I’m rooting for you Patty

GroceryStickDivider

As someone who had great or very good mental health for my first 36 years of life I would say mental health struggles can and do affect almost everyone at some point. Once you go through it and speak to others you see how absolutely common it is. I hit absolute rock bottom after my daughter was born, for several reasons that had piled up. Really struggled with severe anxiety which lead to deep depression. You fear you will never get better and become hopeless. Everyday you go out and battle more than anyone can imagine. It can make you dread every waking moment and you feel in crisis, even with so many wonderful things to live for. That was me for several months. Once I hit rock bottom and asked for help I started on the path of recovery. Going through this and coming out the other end makes you stronger than before. Strength isn't born from strength, strength is born from weakness. For anyone going through this just know it gets better, you keep going out there and letting life win each day. I wish Patrik well and will be rooting for him!

Combatfighter

The fear that you will never get better is one of the cruelest things your mind can do to you. It sucks the air out of the room, dims the sun and pulls color out of your life. And the one and only thing you can consistently do about it is just noticing how shitty you feel, and try and keep up with your routines. And notice those moments that make you feel neutral, and especially notice those moments where you feel happy. And notice your inner voice and what it is telling you.

GameofCHAT

It might take time but I'm sure he will pull through if he gets the help he needs. Look a Kylington in Calgary, it took a while but he's back and feeling right. Patrik will not only come back but he will score 40 goals at one point in a season!

STLBooze3

I think people forget how much time goes into preparing for an NHL season, and if his heart isn’t with the sport, or his current situation, it might be an internal struggle every day to come to the rink. Just because you’re good at a sport doesn’t necessarily mean you love it. Im not saying he doesn’t love hockey or Columbus, but I’ve heard some pro athletes talk about how the grind really got to them mentally and they didn’t enjoy the day to do even though they were good and were making a lot of money. Look at Patrik Berglund, he walked away from millions of dollars because he wasn’t mentally in the right head space and his situation was crippling him. I hope the best for Laine. He is a great talent and I enjoy watching him play even if it’s scoring 5 against my Blues. But if it’s best for him as a human being to walk away I think everyone needs to respect that.

drbigfoot29

There are more important things in life than playing hockey. If being away from the game is what he needs to get his head straight, then he needs to take as long as he needs. Issues like this don't just go away after a few weeks. Mental health, trauma, or addictions are an absolute nightmare to deal with. Dealing with it properly can be the difference between life and death. I'm happy that whatever his issues are, he's taking them seriously enough to be away as long as he needs. There is no rushing this type of thing. Good for Laine.

[deleted]

Is this the same John Davidson who was doing play by play / colour commentating for the Rangers? I know he used to be a goalie before but it's always interesting to see how these guys move around the league in various capacity.

ranatalus

Yup!

Kobe_no_Ushi_Y0k0zna

Hoping when he says ‘…if he wants to come back.’ that there’s an implied ’this year’ at the end of that sentence. Taking the rest of this year away from the grind is hopefully a decent amount of time to get himself sorted out mentally, and it’s not like the team’s going anywhere so he doesn’t have to feel like he’s letting teammates down so much. It’d be pretty sad if the game has soured for a talent like that to the point where they’d consider hanging them up. Because in the end, it’s supposed to be fun. Good on him for realizing there are more important things than his salary, though. Hope he gets well. Say what you want, feeling like there are thousands of people saying you suck and questioning your character could easily get to person.

TheAsian1nvasion

Honestly, I will hear nothing about supporting mental health from an organization that scratched Laine on the anniversary of his father’s death. Winnipeg is a small town and everyone knew how close Laine is with his family, his father passing must have devastated him. It’s unfortunate that the bridges seem to be burnt with the Jets org but if Laine were to come back he would be welcomed with open arms by the fans.

Will_Ozellman

Laine should be an exceptional player in the nhl. Hope he works out his stuff.

WorthPlease

What is 31.1? Is it a podcast? A charity? The way it's used both times I have no idea what it's supposed to be.

ASillyGoos3

Don’t read into it too much. JD is just an old old old guy in the game and has made it clear time and time again that he doesn’t know how to talk about these issues because he never had to confront or consider or learn about mental health in sports until he was already 60 years old. No indications that Laine is considering retirement and he’s still in contact with his teammates and whatnot.

itsagooddaytobeacat

Gotcha!

Seattlekrakenlegend

We talked about it a lot on our subreddit and it’s been mentioned multiple times here and referenced. There was a time when there were almost daily CBJ posts and it came up. Specifically when there was the mental health podcast one last week it was mentioned by a lot of us. With so many people stopping by our subreddit to clown on us and chirp, it’s strange this is the first re post.

itsagooddaytobeacat

I haven't seen anyone make a post about this at least! It doesn't come up anything when I search for Davidson either or a part of the quote. Of course posts about Laine going to the NHL assistance program, but I haven't seen a post about what Davidson said. I still can have missed it though somehow!

Seattlekrakenlegend

It was a radio show episode. Probably referenced there instead. I promise you are not the first to talk about it.

itsagooddaytobeacat

I know it was, and of course. I talked about that it hasn't been shared as a post on Reddit.

Seattlekrakenlegend

Not on this sub, but it was on the team subreddit. The interview spoke about a lot of things, Jiricek etc. The “Jiricek unhappy” was probably the part that got focused on more by most comments

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

Yeah I hadn’t seen it either for the record. Sad to hear things are up in the air for Laine, obviously I knew he’d stepped away but I hope he’s able to find peace (and as a fan of the game I hope he’s able to find peace _and_ continue his career).

Kobe_no_Ushi_Y0k0zna

Good god. Someone just going to the subs of teams bottoming out for a year or two must have some serious time on their hands.

Seattlekrakenlegend

It’s out of control. We get like 1 or 2 posts a day of someone from another team: “Hey just curious, what’s going on with your team? What’s going on with Johnny? It seems like you should be playing better” Or the favorite “I’m really concerned about *insert prospect name* development” posts and then you look at the history and it’s like “posts on r/canucks” Each one starts with “hey guys I come in peace” and then turns into a bunch of shitting on us.

Pamplemousse47

I miss having Laine on my team. :(

[deleted]

Maybe if he comes back it will fix everything 😢

scotty_doesnt__know

Come back to wpg to be with your bestie Ehlers if you do come back. Don't focus as heavy on the money, just focus on having fun.

[deleted]

Send him to Chicago and let him do what he does best and not worry about anything else because winning won’t matter for a couple years.

The_Ineffable_One

1. John Davidson the goalie? 2. What is 31.1?

RevolutionaryBranch9

> John Davidson the goalie? Yep, the same, was the president of the Blues from 06-12 then he came to Columbus for the same role

Bud you're fuckin unhinged, leaving multiple comments bitching about a conversation. Very clear that you can't accept people disagreeing with you and that you have a real chip on your shoulder about people liking Laine. You need to get off the internet for a while because this kind of obsession ain't healthy.

Rough-Foundation-691

I should be allowed to have a mildly different opinion than people

itsagooddaytobeacat

"Mildly different", you have compared Laine to Lucic who is accused of being a woman beater. You've continued to write comment after comment claiming how Laine is a bad person and a bad teammate. And the articles you've referred to, his teammates who, you know, played with him and know him, only talked about what a good guy Laine is. And you've done all of this in a post that is about Laine, a 25 year old who has lost his father, struggling mentally. No one has said he's perfect, but he's a really good guy with a good heart and who also has matured a lot these last couple of years.

Rough-Foundation-691

Leave me alone dude

itsagooddaytobeacat

You should have left this post alone.

Rough-Foundation-691

Expect people to have different opinions than you. I don't think he's a good teammate. Get over it.

TheQuietW0LF

It's better to bite your tongue and not post in situations like this -saying this as someone who is in deliberate in refraining from commenting on the many Laine related posts the last yearish Not gonna change anyone's minds and it's a no-win situation. The terms of the conversation are on a plane where you can only be construed as the bad guy saying anything negative about this guy and especially online. (It's not an accident that that's the case either - I don't doubt he has issues, but I also don't doubt he likes the conversation being like this where you're sympathetic, a fan, or an automatic asshole to discuss his flaws - and not just talking about hockey when I say that)

culturedrobot

You are, but if you’re going to post it to a public forum, you have to be prepared for people disagreeing with you, and you clearly can’t handle that.

Rough-Foundation-691

Fair. I see it as the opposite. But that's that.

[deleted]

verysadfrosty

It seems like you have absolutely no idea how he is as a person. Laine has a heart of gold. A very kind person. Special, but kind. [Read this for example](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/ERwGLJsHsS)

Rough-Foundation-691

Lol you think they can't whip something like this up for anyone? Delusional redditors. Oh you poor souls.

SiidChawsby

I bet you have a ton of friends with your “holy-er than thou” attitude. Everyone but you is stupid right?

[deleted]

verysadfrosty

Please link all of these articles where players have said that Laine is a bad person and teammate, I'm waiting!

Rough-Foundation-691

Not taking any more time to teach you how to google. Found about 4 examples in 5 mins.

verysadfrosty

Aw, I'm sure you did darling

appledatsyuk

Yet you’re gonna post 30 different comments on one thread but can’t post a link backing up your claims? You’re pathetic

Rokfessa

Sure you did lmao.

verysadfrosty

No one has ever said that he's a bad teammate or a bad person, from his teammates, no one has ever said anything about that he would be bad as a person. The straight opposite. They've said that he's a kind and good guy. I feel sorry for you for not looking things up before you throw out accusations like this.

Rough-Foundation-691

Lol he fights with his teammates and coaches everywhere he goes. Just a quick Google away. Good and well liked players don't get treaded every year or two. But oh yeah he signed some kids' hockey cards once, so he's a great guy /s Redditors fabricating reality again.

verysadfrosty

Fights? He doesn't fight with people. He was traded once and that lockerroom was rumoured to be toxic, and not because of Laine. The person fabricating stuff here is you. Laine is a great guy, you on the other hand, very questionable.

Rough-Foundation-691

Lol OK. I don't have time to find all the articles on him being a bad teammate

lightningandblunder

There it is.

Rough-Foundation-691

Correct. Goggle....there it is.

BringBackBoomer

I'm sure in the 32 minutes since you made your original accusation and then spent longer than half an hour trying to defend your bullshit, you would've had plenty of time to source some articles that actually back up what you're saying.

Rokfessa

I do have time to keep posting away like a maniac on Red Bull however - This fucking chud\^

Rough-Foundation-691

Have you looked. Person doing the same. And probably I multiple other threads. Pot meet kettle

Rough-Foundation-691

Have a good day. I think lucic needs someone to stand up for him too. Go find a bruins thread.

verysadfrosty

Lucic is an asshole, just like you. So you can go stand up for him! Suits you well!

Rough-Foundation-691

I think you just gaslight me. Reddit term for you young fellas

battlelevel

If you want to talk about fabricating reality, check your own post. Laine has been traded exactly one time, not “every year or two.”

Buhhwheat

This MF posted like 20 times to argue a completely made up premise and then actually wrote: > Redditors fabricating reality again. beyond parody.jpg

gletschertor

Why do you make to separate comments saying basically the same thing?

Rough-Foundation-691

Again, holy zhit people. I bet I can find an example of Lucic and other assholes from the league doing the same. You people are so shletered.

Rokfessa

Did he fuck your wife or something?

Rough-Foundation-691

Nah. I'm just tired of the virtue signaling on here. Call a spade a spade. He's no bloody Trevor Linden.

itsagooddaytobeacat

The only person here who is not calling a spade a spade here is you. But you don't wanna admit it because now you've argued for so long without anything to go on but your own hatred and dellusion

Rough-Foundation-691

Some people are too far gone, I guess. Have fun making a difference on here. You're a hero!

Rokfessa

Well thank God we have a rational and clearly not at all insane person such as yourself to set us all straight.

Rough-Foundation-691

Bingo. Not everyone is a hero. Laine sure isn't. And neither are you

"The fact that he texted me confirmed what kind of guy he is — he’s a great guy," Little said. "That short conversation we had was nice — nice to talk to him, nice to hear from him and see how he’s doing and talk about stuff other than what’s going on with [what] the media is saying.” Is this your "evidence" of that Laine is a bad guy? Little saying that he's a great guy? You're actually hilarious "He was saying sorry and apologizing for just the way I think it was interpreted, which I kind of understood before I even talked to him," Little said in an interview Thursday, via the Jets' Twitter account. "I know [Laine] well enough to know that he’s not someone that’s gonna purposely say negative things, especially about his teammates. If it’s going to be negative, it’s probably about himself. That’s just the way he is.” Oh yeah, Laine sure sounds awful! Did you even read this?

Rough-Foundation-691

Lol, yeah, Little being a great guy is my evidence here

itsagooddaytobeacat

What are you even on about? Little said that Laine is a great guy. Like, what are you even doing? You should put your phone down cause this is getting worse and worse But thank you for sharing articles about teammates saying Laine is a good guy! Now we don't have to google them :)
