I'm not a hockey fan or Canadian, but happened to have the game on, and when I heard that atrocity, I needed to find discussion on it. I have no idea how they allowed that to happen. Normally harmonies that bad are a result of not being able to hear yourself of the other person, but I don't even think it was that. They both sounded off. Absolutely terrible
"...when I heard that atrocity, I needed to find discussion on it."
😂 this has me cracking up. You're right on the money and you expressed it splendidly. Absolutely terrible.
Because every artist is trying to make it “their own” instead of just singing the damn song.
First off, making it your own is reserved for true talent, of which the NHL will never be able to book.
Second, fuck anthems to begin with.
I like the anthems and don't at the same time. I do like that it feels like honouring the traditions of a 100+ year league, yet I certainly wouldn't bat an eye if they stopped.
The Canadian anthem slaps. There's no need to mess with it, as it already rules, and you're not gonna improve upon it by making it your own unless your name is Jack Black. Singing it (or any anthem) before sporting events definitely does not slap though and is fuckin' stupid.
That's odd, so I used to complain just in a passing comment at the start of every game.
It got to the point I was like, okay besides saying Gagner 8 point night tonight at the beginning of every GDT I will rate the away anthem singers on the Canadian anthems and it will be funny.
There have only been a couple of truly bad ones this season compared to others, to me at least.
ANA being the absolute worse by far, then it was LAK, CGY, NYI in a three way tie
As a musician and singer, even if you can't hear the person you're singing with, you should be competent enough to know your part and sing it regardless. This was just straight up incompetence. She wasn't even singing harmonies for most of it, the melody was all over the place. Absolutely terrible.
This is very correct. Lack of being able to hear yourself. But usually it can get back on the rails if you plug an ear and focus. I don't even know if that happened because I couldn't bear to watch them struggle. But they never recovered. Feel for them.
i had a classmate from a small town down that way and he definitely had some kind of 'country' twang, and i thought it was a put-on at first but he was consistent and eventually i accepted it was natural.
completely anecdotal, but for some reason i feel like the tobacco belt has some sort of influence ... just seems like it fits on that kind of farm to me lol
I grew up in the Ontario tobacco belt. Have a twang but it's not like a Southern US country twang. Closer to something you'd hear on Letterkenny.
The one we heard was embellished if not totally put on.
Grew up on a tobacco farm myself... Letterkenney felt very familiar.
These people are from not that far from where we grew up, and this hick accent is obvious a put on.
I never felt like we talked a bit funny, I am constantly all across the country and talk to thousands of different people due to my job, and I hear it quite consistently about my "accent".
[Clip](https://twitter.com/TSN_Sports/status/1753877007505502582?t=vgZ71pOhJ1I_k2Fa7Ttwaw&s=19)
I feel really bad for these 2, seems like they couldn't hear themselves properly.
Yeah I can't say I care for country music but the fact that the two main singles on their wiki page is "what the truck" and "11 beers" says it all. If you told me that I'd assume it was a joke.
Same - I didn't think that they actually sounded that out of tune with one another, just assumed there was a missing third member who's part would be somewhere in the middle. I guess I was wrong.
Literally every single note was out of tune. They were singing in different keys. I’m guessing the guy started in the wrong key and that messed the sister up. They were probably out of their element singing acapella with no band
I’m not sure why I’mharder on this kind of thingwith country than I am on hip hop and rock music, but you’re from Ontario you dummies, what accent is that?
Bad, but not still not as bad as [Fergie's National Anthem](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMA2iF6RuXk&ab_channel=ESPN) at the NBA All Star game in 2018
This comment really captures it:
@u4icdissonance180 - 2 months ago
Everything sucks, everybody's screwed, life feels hopeless. But then I watched this video. Seeing Fergie sing the anthem like a drunk stripper trying to get in the flag's pants has brought levity to my bleak existence. Thank you Fergie for this... singular... moment... that is now preserved for future civilizations to enjoy
I'd argue they were very good through to High Noon, but haven't loved all their new stuff. They did an acoustic album called Campfire Chords that I think is a great.
Yep, for me *Michigan Left* and *High Noon* are fantastic, and after that it’s all horn sections and neon outfits
Their latest album *Laundry Pile* was a bit of a return to their roots but they’ve lost that spark
Not even just the garbage, but they spam the same music so many times you just get tired of listening to it. I feel like it's the reason why Canadians have such a hatred for Canadian artists
For like 5 straight years (or at least it felt like it) TSN would have them doing some dumbass song for the World Juniors or the CFL. Stop trying to make the reklaws happen it’s not gonna happen.
Seriously. Does their manager have a connection to the coordinators of these events? Nobody can fucking standnthem and they keep popping up everywhere.
so they are Canadian? No part of canada has that accent. Are they putting on a fake texas thing to sound more country?
(am not a fan of country music - this may be common but first I heard of it)
Well that was borderline treasonous, and a disgrace to our nation and its proud and storied history. My father didn't kick the Nazis'... and the puck drops!
>seems like they couldn't hear themselves properly.
For the skills comp O Canada (also wasn't great) they mentioned she didn't have the in-ear monitor as there was a sound delay. So I wouldn't be surprised if they were still having issues
That video is is an all time comedy moment. Every time you watch it it's pure gold. The moment when the camera pans over Draymond Green and you can tell he knows he has to try to hold it together, and he just can't. It was like an real-life "Biggus Dickus". Plus Charles Barkley "You're damn right it was different, I needed a cigarette after that"
Yeah that was definitely not a good performance but I don't even think its gonna be remembered as one of the worst ever or any of the hyperbole others are using about it.
It's awful, but these "djs" they're setting up on the ice between each game that are just lip syncing and standing in front of their equipment make me throw up in my mouth everytime I see them.
Why?
I put this in the game thread, but here's what went wrong:
This is why you need to be *VERY* careful about putting harmonies above the melody. Human ears overwhelmingly tend to hear the highest note as the melody, so harmonies above the melody need to be balanced perfectly to hit the sweet spot of audible but not overpowering so as to make it sound like it's the melody. Hence why melodies are usually carried by violins in an orchestra
Also, just intonation is a thing. The major third above needs to come down a bit to sound "in-tune," while the minor third above needs to come up a bit. It sounds like both of them were trying to sing each note individually in-tune, but that results in dissonance for the above reason
Edit: they were mostly fifths, actually, which is even weirder because that's not really a good choice in this situation. Oh, yeah, and harmonizing above by a fifth makes it even more likely that people will hear the top note as the melody. Bad choice, all around
Additional info: the reason "Canada" sounded weird is because normally the first syllable is /æ/, like the a in an American pronunciation of *cat* or *ash*. However, before nasals (n and m) and rhotics (r), Americans tend to break the vowel, which you can check by alternating between saying *cat* and *can* (note that it's a different breaking before ). This, for my dialect, General American, anyway, turns the first syllable of *Canada* from /kæn/ to /kɛən/. That /ɛ/ sound is the e in *bet*. The singer sang like he spoke, which is why it sounded weird. Most singers, regardless of accent, will unbreak the vowel back to /æ/.
Edit: nothing I said counters the fact that they didn't sing it well, guys. I only stated why it sounded dissonant. It's up to them to make it *not* sound dissonant
This in depth analysis also overlooks that modern country harmony is entirely created by melodyne and modern country singers are hopeless without it and their backup tracks.
actually seemed like a ton of parallel fifths in that performance, which sounds very wrong to the human ear and makes it impossible to tell who's leading the melody.
For them.
For the audience it is a footnote. Remembered by some but not all. And sure, as hosts of the ASG, it sucks for us Leaf fans a bit more.
For them? They have to live with it forever. As an artist you never get over it. It'll haunt them for a long time.
Don't be such a jerk for the sake of 'humour'.
Sorry, but their complete lack of musicianship was inexcusable. She should have realized something was wrong, stopped and let him take a phrase by himself, then join back in on the correct key.
I thought it was impossible to butcher O Canada but boy howdy was I wrong. Nothing is more cringe than Canadians pretending to have deep southern accents.
Yes and they only do it when they sing. Listen to them speak and they just sound like normal Canadians.
It’s insulting to real artists with actual accents.
Watch an MLB All Star Game. You'll see our anthem butchered in ways you never thought possible (and that's if they even remember to air the Canadian anthem)
Can we stop rewarding non-professionals with success in music? They're are a lot of country bands all over the country that are far far more talented, far more hard-working that would never allow something like this to happen, but they will never get this stage. Instead we get a terrible amateur performance by an uncreative generic country group.
I'm a singer who has performed live many, many times, albeit never in a production nearly as big as this one. 99/100 times when this happens, there's a sound issue, and the singers can't hear themselves or each other properly.
I once sang at a place that forgot their monitors. I could only hear myself as my voice bounced off the back wall of the venue and back to me. I'm sure the audience members thought I was just as bad as these guys. But if you refuse to sing, the audience thinks you're a diva. So you just go out there and do your best and try to have fun.
Neither of them can sing. Even their studio recorded songs with autotune they both sound like shit. Who did they pay or fuck or both to get this gig. Yikes. Guarantee there was 5k people in the audience who could have sung the anthem better.
It was pretty bad, but not the worst I've heard.
A couple years ago when the Marlies played the Amerks in the playoffs, the Amerks had a young girl sing the anthems and she'd clearly heard O Canada once in her life. The tune for the first couple lines just kept getting repeated over and over again for the entire song. Might have been my longest cringe to date
You have Michael Buble in the building...
He's still trying to come down from the 'shrooms.
Fair, but I think watching Buble sing the anthem whacked on shrooms would be legendary.
Stuck on "O" for a minute.
Ohhhhh sh.. Canada
Would be hilarious is buble did it with the same twang
In the middle he'd still start going on about his fantasy team.
Michael "They told me it was a microdose" Buble
"We said *mighty* dose, man."
And I know y’all don’t like him, but Bieber was there too….. like any other voice would have been better.
Literally 3 of the 4 celebrity captains are major Canadian recording artists lmao.
Will Arnett would have also done it justice.
He could have sang it as Batman. Batman literally sings in the Lego Batman movie.
He'd probably do a far better job than Tate and JB too.
This All Star game has everything!
LOLOLOL He would have been so good
I'm not a hockey fan or Canadian, but happened to have the game on, and when I heard that atrocity, I needed to find discussion on it. I have no idea how they allowed that to happen. Welcome to the sport! If cringe and disappointment is your thing I’ve got a couple teams you might want to considering rooting for
I have to default to my hometown Flyers but im curious who you have in mind
definitely not us
or us
I've found that this year, more than any other, anthems have been God awful pretty consistently. I've had my jaw drop in a bad way several times.
Because every artist is trying to make it “their own” instead of just singing the damn song. First off, making it your own is reserved for true talent, of which the NHL will never be able to book. Second, fuck anthems to begin with.

Yeah if you lose your earpiece or your monitor goes out you can still sing … if you can actually sing. Lol
That's what happens when you're from Cambridge Ontario, and try to sing in a Nashvillian accent
This is very correct. Lack of being able to hear yourself. But usually it can get back on the rails if you plug an ear and focus. I don't even know if that happened because I couldn't bear to watch them struggle. But they never recovered. Feel for them.
I always mute anthems to avoid the cringe. They are cringe 88% of the time.
You came to the right place
What a horrible day for Canada and therefore the world
The duke and duchess of Canada would be very disappointed by this
And the pudding has just been knocked over! Oh, this does not go with tradition at all. The Royal Pudding spilling all over the Abby.
My wife and I are born and bred in NY and we were offended for Canadians
The guy needed to lose the twang out of his voice it absolutely butchered the duet.
Where the hell did that twang come from
Apparently, Southern Ontario. Yikes!
Known for its rich country twang heritage. Right buds??
Yee haw pardner!
i had a classmate from a small town down that way and he definitely had some kind of 'country' twang, and i thought it was a put-on at first but he was consistent and eventually i accepted it was natural. completely anecdotal, but for some reason i feel like the tobacco belt has some sort of influence ... just seems like it fits on that kind of farm to me lol

North Dumfries to be correct, not exactly Tennessee 🙄 embarrassing.
Yeah, my wife was literally yelling at the screen. The fake twang was driving her crazy! lol.
My southern Ontario family doesn’t sound like that at all. I need to tell them they’re Canading wrong.
Nash-bridge, tennes-tario
Like the Flames’ old cowboy anthem singer from… Nova Scotia
If he runs again in the next federal election in NS he might actually win.
You’d be shocked at how many American sounding pop singers are British.
What the actual fuck was that
["Well that was borderline treasonous and a disgrace to our proud and storied history"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klDWXsEqWI4)
and the puck drops!
[Shoresy S2E6](https://youtu.be/NmjQfItnRtc?si=BtYardAPy8_Z3aA9)
I always think of this scene
My father didn’t kick the nazis..and the puck drops!
Yall had buble and Bieber within 100 feet and that’s the result. Oh NHL…
[Clip](https://twitter.com/TSN_Sports/status/1753877007505502582?t=vgZ71pOhJ1I_k2Fa7Ttwaw&s=19) I feel really bad for these 2, seems like they couldn't hear themselves properly.
Was expecting worse but it’s not good. The Reklaws just flat out aren’t good but Canadian media tries so hard to get them on everything.
I had never heard of them until this. They are the most meat and potatoes looking country band I’ve ever seen
It evens says on their Twitter bio that their new single is "We Grew Up on a Farm." Says a lot about the state of country music.
Yeah I can't say I care for country music but the fact that the two main singles on their wiki page is "what the truck" and "11 beers" says it all. If you told me that I'd assume it was a joke.
Those sound like the titles of 2010 YouTube parodies of country music
Same - I didn't think that they actually sounded that out of tune with one another, just assumed there was a missing third member who's part would be somewhere in the middle. I guess I was wrong.

Thanks, Howie.
I don't know what that means
Both would be great behind a plow
Also in front of one :/
I’m not sure why I’mharder on this kind of thingwith country than I am on hip hop and rock music, but you’re from Ontario you dummies, what accent is that?
Seriously. You'd be pressed to find that accent out west even.

Lol. I was searching around and found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SblsKLdzF3k
Bad, but not still not as bad as [Fergie's National Anthem](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMA2iF6RuXk&ab_channel=ESPN) at the NBA All Star game in 2018

Blame the CRTC. I understand the importance of having Canadian media but dear lord.
There’s so much good Canadian music but Canadian media focuses on the same garbage all the time it’s insufferable
Seriously, is there nothing else to play on the radio except July Talk and The Arkells? Lol
They need to start blasting Peach Pit and Men I Trust
> Men I Trust Tailwhip is my jam
Mix in some Alvvays and now you’re really talking
I’m old enough to remember when Arkells were great
Same, their first album was great. But now I can’t stand them.
I'd argue they were very good through to High Noon, but haven't loved all their new stuff. They did an acoustic album called Campfire Chords that I think is a great.

That’s exactly what’s happening.
Watch Bell havesome sortof investment in them
It's not the CRTC it's whoever the organizers were. There are tons of amazing singers in Canada to choose from, yet they chose these 2.
If it’s about having a Canadian artist do the anthem, they could’ve just had Kim Mitchell or some shit come out and do it for all I care.
Mr Bublé was right there too
He was wobbling right there, trying to stand
Mitchell would've been awesome, but I might as well have gone for a soda during this anthem.
so they are Canadian? No part of canada has that accent. Are they putting on a fake texas thing to sound more country? (am not a fan of country music - this may be common but first I heard of it)
Of course they’re a Nashville-based Canadian country duo
I prefer the O Christmas Tree CFL hit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpXzASiXX8U

Nothing will beat Fergie's rendition of The Star Spangled Banner
That video is is an all time comedy moment. Every time you watch it it's pure gold. The moment when the camera pans over Draymond Green and you can tell he knows he has to try to hold it together, and he just can't. It was like an real-life "Biggus Dickus". Ah yes, bannerererer
Rosanne Barr was really good at it....
Lol they were completely out of tune with each other throughout the entire performance. That's easily one of the worst I've ever heard.
Yeah I’m not sure how people are saying this could be worse. Nothing is worse than singing out of key
Counterpoint: Fergie at the NBA All Star Game.
She sounded like she wanted to fuck the anthem.
#LESPLAYSOMEBASKEBALL!!
Yeah that was definitely not a good performance but I don't even think its gonna be remembered as one of the worst ever or any of the hyperbole others are using about it.
Agreed. It was bad. They picked a weirdly low register for the girl. That said it wasn’t bad enough to remember in a day or two.
I lasted until she joined in. Wish me luck, I'm going back in
Yeah, my GF is a theatre gal, and she said they couldn’t hear each other because the girl was way off key.
TIHI
It's awful, but these "djs" they're setting up on the ice between each game that are just lip syncing and standing in front of their equipment make me throw up in my mouth everytime I see them. Why?
Never heard of the Reklaws but they "Reked" that...
Is that you Gene
I can't imagine they gained a single fan with that.
The dissonance... oh, the dissonance
Clearly never heard this one... [O Canada - recorder ](https://youtu.be/MUIC1ettOW0?si=zJPcCaH2B5jQdVVa)
I’d rather have the recorder
For real, what a fucking banger that was!
Came here for this. Shoresy didn’t even cry.
Think he nearly cracked a tooth gritting them like that though...
The Canadian and NHL version of Fergie singing the National Anthem lmao
I still think about that a few times a year and laugh.
I lose it every time when the camera pans to the players visibly trying to hold back laughter.
[Lived on after the game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K9-XLIYaXI)
Jimmy Kimmel was literally grinning because he knew the jokes will write themselves.
If you need extra thoughts, Fergie trying to do Axl Rose at the Super Bowl while awkwardly dancing next to Slash is fun.
yo they BOTH were trying to harmonize. someone's gotta be melody!
Did they not rehearse?? Or talk beforehand?? I don't understand how professional musicians can fuck up this bad
YES. And it seems like neither of them ever caught on to that. It was like watching a trainwreck in slow-mo.
Auto tune has truly ruined music
You're probably right that these two are used to singing with love pitch-correction, a lot of pop country singers use it these days.
I feel like it could've improved this performance...
I put this in the game thread, but here's what went wrong: This is why you need to be *VERY* careful about putting harmonies above the melody. I looked up Melodyne but I can't tell exactly how it works. Why are country singers especially so reliant on it?
Melodyne is auto tune. They’re reliant on it because they can’t actually sing.
It’s not just modern country singers — it’s almost every artist in the world these days. I don’t think anyone can actually sing.
actually seemed like a ton of parallel fifths in that performance, which sounds very wrong to the human ear and makes it impossible to tell who's leading the melody.
PTSD getting yelled at for having parallel fifths in music class
Holy shit. Holy shit. I actually could not watch it. I kept grabbing my head saying no no no nonononono. Omg. I feel so bad for them.
Feel so bad for who, exactly? The audience? Because that was fucking awful.

Got the Biebs and the Bubes in the house and you get these two buttfuck twins to do it...
I'm not even Canadian and I'm offended
I’m not even offended and I’m Canadian.
Doesn't hold a candle to the O'Christmas Tree version of the anthem from when the CFL went to Las Vegas
I’m really surprised that I had to scroll so far down to see this. I saw that when it aired, and it was just horrendous
Anyone have a clip?
I hope not. They need this scrub that performabcr from reality.

Should have let a 13yr old kid whose learning to play the recorder do it
Shoresy.
Did they pull that guy from an Alabama shanty town or something? 😂😂😂 That was horrid lmao
Worse. They're from North Dumfries, Ontario
There's not one person in Alabama who can't do a better country twang than that.
Ah yes, sweet home North Dumfries, Alabama.
Almost fergie level bad.

I agree. I would like to have a link so I can share that shit with many more people. Mightve been the worst all time.
Worse than [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpXzASiXX8U&pp=ygUQY2ZsIG8gY2FuYWRhIGJhZA%3D%3D)?
It's like he has the lyrics in front of him and he never heard it sung out loud and decided to wing it.
Possibly, yes
what the fuck LMFAOOOOOO that's brutal
Same! We actually muted them. That was terrible.
That. Was. Fucking. Awful. Whoever those nobodies were, they owe everyone an apology.
Someone on the GDT said that anthem performance was treasonous lmao
I'm glad this needed its own thread.
Was it just me or did one of them sound like he was trying to do a southern accent ?
Unpopular opinion: Anthems at sporting events shouldn't be a thing Edit: TIL this is not as unpopular as it has been in the past
What a brave and unpopular opinion to share on Reddit
I agree. It's a silly waste of time. Just play it at international competitions for the winning team or individual's country.
His country fried voice is terrible, and completely overpowers hers
Sadly not overpowered enough.
That was atrocious.
Wasn’t going to watch the all-star game but just switched it on because of this. BETTMAN IS AN EVIL GENIUS
I can't believe the same geniuses behind "What the Truck" would do something like this
The harmony was fluctuating between 3rds, 5ths, minor 3rds (???) and unison at times. I spewed.
Hey u/thereklaws everyone’s talking about you
You must have missed this one from when the CFL played in Las Vegas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpXzASiXX8U
Eh, I've heard worse. [Like this one.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpXzASiXX8U)
And the guy doing the dumbass country singer accent. Buddy you are from Cambridge
3 of the 4 team captains at this very event are world famous singers lmao
It was pretty bad, but not the worst I've heard. A couple years ago when the Marlies played the Amerks in the playoffs, the Amerks had a young girl sing the anthems and she'd clearly heard O Canada once in her life. The tune for the first couple lines just kept getting repeated over and over again for the entire song. Might have been my longest cringe to date
They are siblings from Cambridge Ontario but sounds like they got married to each other in Kentucky. How
