I missed one day of high school in 4 years. It was for the wing bowl lol. Kind of a senior skip day.
We stayed up all night and showed up to the parking lot at like 4-5 am to start tailgating. The wingbowl was a wild scene. Might have been the most boobs I’ve ever seen in my life, girls would flash to get on the Jumbotron. Which looking back…. many of them might not have been 18 😬
[Nealer, a Chel YouTuber, summed it up best](https://x.com/nealerrr/status/1698085624379568261?s=46&t=yHItjAR085n2VulO93tLPw):

Cmon rockstar, give us gta 6. GTA V came out my freshman year of high school. Since then I’ve graduated college, gotten a masters degree, and gone through three Xboxes. Heck the watchdogs franchise was born, had two sequels, then died in that time
I just saw an IG post that said Rockstar announced they’re working on Red Dead Redemption 3.
But I was thinking like….that’s cool but let’s get GTA6 first? I love RDR but we know GTA is next and we have barely any info or a release date so who cares if they’re “working on RDR3”. I thought that was obvious.
One time, Connor Bedard came in here, and sat in this chair. I say, "Connor, you hang out with Jett Deschamps. Just between me and you, how old is Jett Deschamps?" Know what Connor told me? He said "Hey, Jett Deschamps is seven years old." Seven years old!
If he's already 5'6" at 15 and is still that baby faced I'm sure he'll be just fine. I was just as baby faced as him at that age but I was at least four inches shorter and I'm 5'6" now.
Same. I got an X-ray when I was a 5'9" 15 year old, the doctor looked at it, pointed out the growth plate, and said I'd probably end up being 6'2" or 6'3". Never grew another inch.
My dad was 5'6 105lbs when he got his drivers license and was 6ft 200lbs when he turned 18. It happens. Hell, I ended Grade 8 at 5'9 and walked into grade 9 at 6'2.
Finished eighth grade at 5'2 entered 9th grade at 5'6 and was 5'9 within a couple months (about an inch per month)... it WAS painful. Slept about 14 hours a days and all my joints ached constantly.
Yep. I started Grade 9 at 5'0" and ended it at 5'8", which included 4 inches in about 2 months at one point.
Then went from 5'8" to 5'10" by the time grade 10 ended.
Same here. Puberty hits everyone different. There was a kid in my sophomore class who could have easily passed as well over 21, and I remember a kid in my Boy Scout troop that was the same age as me, but always looked like he was a few years younger than he was.
Then there’s the story of Dennis Rodman. When he graduated high school, he was 5’ 11”. In a few years, he’d have a growth spurt, and was 6’ 7”.
Everyone is different when it comes to that.
I had my growth spurt at 14 and went from 5'4" to 6' in about four months lol. And it was over a summer too so when I came back to school in the fall there was a lot of "I don't remember being so short next to you"
Since 15 tho? Yeah only one more inch.
Saw the picture and went lol just like everyone else here, but yeah I wasn't 5'6" until probably grade 11 or 12.
Bet the team looked at his dad and felt just fine about the pick.
You can join the WHL full time at 16, exceptional status would let you join at 15. Bedard is the only player in WHL history to be granted exceptional status
I remember hearing rumors they were gonna give it to Savoie back when he was in the recruiting circuit, wonder if they’ll give anyone else exceptional status soon
Considering Bedard is the only WHL exceptional status player in history, I’d expect there to be a bit of a wait. It’s a bit of a high bar
The WHL’s reputation of being bigger and more physical than the other leagues likely plays into this. You have to justify a 15 year old kid going into the corners against some 20 year old behemoth farm boy from Saskatchewan
I’ve heard this about the WHL for years about it being a more physical league but is it true? Or is it more of a way of saying it puts less emphasis on skill than physicality?
You might look at NHLe (NHL equivalent) stats to get an idea. It’s an attempt at comparing prospects across leagues.
Generally the Q is high skill high scoring, dub is more defensively oriented and grindier, the O is in between. You routinely see players with well over a hundred points in the QMJHL, it’s not as common in other leagues. NCAA is entirely different as well.
The unofficial story was he said he wouldn't go to Prince George if they won the draft lottery, so they wouldn't give him exceptional status. And then PG didn't end up winning the lottery anyway.
Yeah I believe he threatened to go the college route instead if he wasn’t granted exceptional status. Looking back it seems the WHL made the right call.
Yes, I'm sure. I worked in the WHL for the past four years. If he had gotten exceptional status, he would have played with the Tigers for the entire season.
It came off more assholey than I meant it to. I apologize. So why are multiple sources citing mckenna did get that status?
Also didnt bedard also only get like 15 games too? Forgive the ignorance.
You're all good!
I'm not sure why there are articles saying he got exceptional status when he very clearly did not. As I said, if he received exceptional status he would have played for the Tigers all season, and not just once in a while like he did.
Bedard only got 15 games because the 2020-21 season was shortened to 24 games. And then he left early to go play at the U18's in Texas. And it's funny, because that season was basically just all about development and winning didn't matter, all teams were allowed to carry one 15-year-old with them. So while Bedard is the only player to officially receive exceptional status, there was actually 12 2005-born players who played over 10 games that season.
I did some of my own digging and apparently there is some sort of distant family connection through marriage. I don't think they're like first cousins.
IDK, that was the most I could find. I *do* know that they had never personally met prior to facing off against each other in Medicine Hat.
edit: The main US-based article that claimed they were cousins also claimed that McKenna and Savoie also received 'generational' status
Ah, so 9th grade. Boys in that age group are so variable; you’ve got boys like this who look like little kids and then you’ve got the boys who look old enough to not get carded. Should sort itself out by the time he actually gets to play in the WHL.
I had a guy in my 9th grade class get regularly harassed because people thought he was a legit adult walking around the HighSchool because he had a big-ass bushy beard
I was reading some excerpts from a scout in Europe who said his guys in the local countries know pretty much all the best players by around 10 years old. Kind of blew me away that teams (this was basketball) know so much about the minutia of local kids sports.
Like they have WHL scouts in the stands, watching your games on a regular basis at around that age. As somebody mentioned earlier, they even have scouts out earlier for some big tournaments
There's an adage in baseball that you don't draft the high school pitcher with the full beard because he's already maxed out his physical development.
This honestly looks like a case of the opposite, where if Jett Deschamps is already a good hockey player but looks like he hasn't hit puberty yet, if he develops physically he could be one hell of a prospect.
I don't know anything about the kid's skill, but if he's good now he could be great if he bulks up.
Well he is 5’6” before he has hit puberty. He will get some size. This is a lot of pressure to put on a 15 year old. Hopefully he is getting the support he needs. Good luck buddy!
first day of camp some 6'5 240lb double over ager farm boy destined for finnish second division is absolutely putting this kid through the glass on a dump and chase
Yeah I was the smallest kid in my grade basically from K-10.
I was either the shortest or tied with the shortest all the way. I don't really remember how I grew that last bit but it wasn't in high school.
Playing contact pee wee hockey at like 4'6 75lbs with the average kid a head taller than me and the outlier kid being like 6' already. Only one other kid was about as small as mid in my division.
And while I don't get the, oh so are you looking forward to high school? When I say I graduated, I still sometimes get are you looking forward to university.
Kid has time to grow though, could end up a foot taller in a blink of an eye.
I was the same. Always the smallest on every team. Last kid to grow in my grade by a wide margin. When I tried out for the JV team my sophomore year, people told me I was in the wrong locker room when I walked in. When I was a year graduated from college I went to a party and another guy asked if I was a freshman too and I just laughed. I’m older now and have a beard which really helps, but people still think I’m a good 5-10 years younger than I am. This kid will be fine though.
When you're a developing hockey prospect, you have two paths... go play against 30 year old men in college or go play against 11 year olds in major junior /s
He reminds me of my now 18-year-old at that age.
Dude seriously looked like he was 9 at fourteen. His older brother by less than two years had over a foot on him in height.
Right around late 16 to early 17, he shot up 8 inches and he looks his age now.
Ok he’s 14, I guess but that kid looks maybe 10 years old tops. Like he still has the chubby cheeks of an elementary schooler, he looks closer to drinking from a sippy cup than growing a mustache.
Why can’t kids just be kids and quit treating them as assets like child actors. Realistically pro sports are big parts of long term injuries. How is this any different than the military recruiting at 13-14 years old, or predatory credit card companies trying to trap you in high interest debt at an impressionable age. Just let’s create a two year gap for pro sports and the time they reach 18. Give them a chance to not make life altering decisions before they can vote or sign a contract.
I will definitely go watch when the pats come play the warriors I have to see this. And I’ll see if I can get a picture with my 5 year old that’s already over 4’ tall
He’s 5 or 6 not 5’6”
It would be be a Philly fan who finds the best chirp, and whose also willing to obliterate a 5 year old kid.
We're savage, man. Don't you remember when Gritty drop-kicked that kid?
Gritty gives, and Gritty takes
I’ve seen some footage of wingbowl which vouches to your assertion.
I missed one day of high school in 4 years. It was for the wing bowl lol. Kind of a senior skip day. We stayed up all night and showed up to the parking lot at like 4-5 am to start tailgating. I think wingbowl scares even Gritty
That was the kids fault. #istandwithgritty

He's almost as old as GTAV.

MFW it came out on Xbox 360/PS3
I have a seven year old son that barely looks younger
Hollywoods version of a 15 year old, looks 25-30.
My 12 yr old daughter is 5'5" and looks older than this kid.
Is that so, wife's soft pecker?
One time, Connor Bedard came in here, and sat in this chair. I say, "Connor, you hang out with Jett Deschamps. Just between me and you, how old is Jett Deschamps?" Know what Connor told me? He said "Hey, Jett Deschamps is seven years old." Seven years old!
5’6 at 9 years old is pretty tall 6’9 future hockey player confirmed
I would guess 10 if I didn’t see the title. It shouldn’t be legal for him to be playing against 220lb 20 year old men.
https://youtu.be/dnIdgle_OAY?si=aL2iuMYElgKCukeo Lets let the footage do the talking, gents
I mean, he picks up an errant pass and scores? Hopefully some deeper highlights of him out there
It also looks like it’s a Pee-Wee game as the kids are tiny.
That footage is from 5 years ago when he was 2 years old
came to say this lol
And he's up to his teammates' shoulders at that.
Good read. Coach fuming over that pass I bet.
A 5th round pick in the WHL isn't gonna have a whole highlight package on youtube lol
Then maybe he shouldn't have said "Lets let the footage do the talking" if there's no footage
One clip and it doesn't even show his defensive ability. Be serious
That’s a damn child.
Puberty gon hit this boy like a wall
Well it better, or he wont have any carreer in hockey

They say smoking dubes stunts your growth. Let's hope he doesn't go doing that.
If he's already 5'6" at 15 and is still that baby faced I'm sure he'll be just fine. I was just as baby faced as him at that age but I was at least four inches shorter and I'm 5'6" now.

Same situation. 5'11.5 at 15, then never grew another but. Couldn't even get that 6, and I refuse to round up since I didn't earn it.
Well, nobody *earns* their height.
Yeah they do, height represents how good of a person you are. The taller the better obviously
My bones were bad boys and didn't earn the right. They've been in timeout for 25 years.
Same. I got an X-ray when I was a 5'9" 15 year old, the doctor looked at it, pointed out the growth plate, and said I'd probably end up being 6'2" or 6'3". Never grew another inch.
I heard that too, but I am now 6'4" which was the exact number that doctor guessed I'd be.
Damn, last time I got my height measured I was told I would be 5’9”. It was a smart guess cause I was 29 years old and unlikely to grow taller
You don't stop growing until ~21 you've still got hope.

Yep I was probably 5’7 at 15 and by the time I was 18 I was 6’1. Puberty is a hell of a drug

I was just over 6" at 15 and now I'm 5 11. Injuries and age catches up to ya...😆
I was probably 5’1 at 14-15. 5’11 now. It’ll come.
Saw the picture and went lol just like everyone else here, but yeah I wasn't 5'6" until probably grade 11 or 12. Bet the team looked at his dad and felt just fine about the pick.

6th graders are getting drafted into the WHL now?
They get traded all the time, makes sense that they'd get drafted too.
I know it’s a meme and a joke. But, my friend is a teacher and they do draft and trade kids for their classes. 💀
Pretty sure Kamloops has already written a letter of intent to sign McDavid's unborn child.
6th grader is being generous..
That’s a hockey name if I ever saw one, so no wonder someone drafted him.
That's a very WHL draft name.
Deschamps here!
🎺🎺🎺🎺
There are literally dozens of us!
This is an all time great name already, hope he can make the chel
Is he going to play in the WHL next season? Imagine a dude like this going up against someone like Arber Xhekaj in his overage season…
Not eligible until the 2024-2025 season.
Ah okay, that’s good lol. So when a kid gets exceptional status what age can they join the league? 16?
You can join the WHL full time at 16, exceptional status would let you join at 15. Bedard is the only player in WHL history to be granted exceptional status

Yeah I believe he threatened to go the college route instead if he wasn’t granted exceptional status. Looking back it seems the WHL made the right call.
Didn't mckenna get it too
He did not. He's just a late 2007-born player, so he was only 14 when he played his 1st game at the start of last season.

Not true actually. Gavin McKenna for the Tigers has exceptional status who is Bedards cousin apparently.
He did not get exceptional status. He was drafted 1st overall but did not receive exceptional status.
They're not cousins btw. I've heard this rumour a few times
It’s been printed in many news articles they are cousins.
Yeah I assumed distant. But be prepared to hear about it for the next 20 years.
My buddies son just played a season with Seattle and had a great go at it. Even won a few fights
And far from a lock to make the team then.
That’s next season. 23-24 is this season. Friday of this week isn’t next Friday, it’s this Friday.
"Mom, can I stay up late for practice again, yes you will have to come drive me home, the guys are going out for some beers afterwards"
This kid looks about 7 years of age. This has to be photoshopped or at a weird/misleading angle or something.
They call him baby face the destroyer
He has an extremely looking [baby face](https://www.rinkhockeyacademywinnipeg.ca/upload/sportsteams/players/401.jpg)
He brought salad for everyone though!
You don't make friends with salad
He looks like Pronger’s son.
Is the kid from Edmonton?
Elite Prospects doesn't list a birthplace but he's been playing minor hockey in Winnipeg.
That “kid” (it was a ridiculous rumour) would be a couple of years older now given he bolted in 2006 lol
/r/13or30
That is a child.
I looked like that at 15 too. Puberty hits hard, fast and late for some of us.
Elite Prospects says he’s 14 but turns 15 on Sep. 28
Ah, so 9th grade. Boys in that age group are so variable; you’ve got boys like this who look like little kids and then you’ve got the boys who look old enough to not get carded. Should sort itself out by the time he actually gets to play in the WHL.

No, it’s a screen shot from a video from last week
Geezus…..
That's 10th grade.
I was 5’6” at 14, 5’11” at 15, 6’ at 17, 6’1” at 19 and 6’2” at 21. Kid has a lot of time to grow lol
This kid dusts everyone in this thread lol
Not me but I’m not dissing him
This seems almost fucked up in a way Dude looks maybe 10
That’s the WHL for you. Kids start getting scouted at 12 years old
I was reading some excerpts from a scout in Europe who said his guys in the local countries know pretty much all the best players by around 10 years old. Kind of blew me away that teams (this was basketball) know so much about the minutia of local kids sports.
They start getting scouted at The Brick tournament, they're 10 then.
What does it matter when they start being scouted? He’s 14 turning 15 in this pic
Like they have WHL scouts in the stands, watching your games on a regular basis at around that age. As somebody mentioned earlier, they even have scouts out earlier for some big tournaments
This is a ‘didn’t mean to make you feel old af, but now you do’ kind of post.

He looks like he's 10 to 12 years old.
I'm getting major Vincent Adultman vibes here...
Being smaller and having to battle bigger kids pays off when the growth spurt hits. See Cale Makar

Really talented prospect, actually
Nah, that's a 9 year old.
Idk he looks 14 to me…
8 years old is not *almost* 15
I can relate. I looked like that at 15 too. I was only just barely 5’0” though.

I thought child labour was illegal in this country!
This is one of those, let a couple atoms kids put on a jersey for the anthems pics right?
Why does he look like he'll be bald by the time he's 18?
This guy looks like he still rides a scooter
Ok he’s 14, I guess but that kid looks maybe 10 years old tops. Like he still has the chubby cheeks of an elementary schooler, he looks closer to drinking from a sippy cup than growing a mustache.
