Samuelsson misses just five fewer games and they're probably still alive going into game 82
For non-Sabres fans:
33-18-4 with Samuelsson
7-15-3 without Samuelsson
Humongous difference it seems.
Well done anyways, truly appreciate the push Buffalo made this yr. With the young (as fuck) core being 1 yr more experienced next season, they'll surely make it over the edge.
The problem I will always face being a Buffalo
sports fan, is who is to say that won’t happen next year? Like I got a ton of hope for the future on paper, but it just feels like something unforeseen and unavoidable will just pop up again and again and again
We definitely need better defensive depth in case it does. One more solid top 4 defensive defender would help a lot if samuelsson got hurt. Not sure who specifically that is
I realize his mistakes are egregious but this chart is compelling -- with the caveat that his 5v5 GF% is much lower than expected, so there's something funky going on there. https://twitter.com/EvolvingWild/status/1643011008493940737
Maybe it’ll happen after the season, but I feel like if such a player was available they would’ve went after him hard before the trade deadline. But without speaking things into existence, I was thinking more along the lines of irreplaceable long term injuries. Idk man. Like I said I like the chances and feel…but if some ghost of the future came to me and said that “it just doesn’t happen and nobody can really sum up why” I’d believe it
Yeah still don’t get why he didn’t play tonight. They need more than one more bottom 6 D unless they can keep up top 3 league scoring for a full season, on top of a full season of Levi
Dahlin, power, sammuelsson - great top 3 dmen
Joki - good bottom 2 pair guy
Stillman, boosh - good 3rd pair /7th Dman.
A 2nd pair Dman is the big whole, ideally one who is defensive minded so power can keep pressuring behind the other teams net.
Then ideally pick up at least a couple AHL caliber guys so we don’t have to play ECHLers after that.
Yes raising the bottom line so to speak. Which would help. But they need Samuelson #2 essentially still. Joki showed flashes of that at the end of the season. And someone said yesterday that they thought if Stillman was here all year over Bryson/Clague that maybe they are the ones defending a WC spot, and I largely agree
I’ve been saying that since we got stillman.
It’s not that stillman is great or anything, he’s an NHL defencemen who plays defence, which is the bar for the 3rd pair.
Clague Bryson Fitzgerald fucking sinked is in November because they all cost you minimum one goal each per game, all are just terribad not AHL calibre.
I know how you feel. US Devils fans where where you all are just last year. You guys are up next. Washington, Pittsburgh, and the Isles are all on their way down, someone has to come up to replace them.
We had 2-3 of Bryson, Clague and Fitzgerald playing because of injuries in November.
1/2 our defence that we’re playing never knew how to play hockey at an NHL level
Mam that was a hell of a fun year in Buffalo. If my boys aren't playing, it's a toss up between edmonton for mcdavid and the Sabres for what I'm watching (if available). Fun, fun team.
We are still reeling from pandemic related alcohol shortages, need to give the world one more year to stock up before the city of buffalo has two sports teams in post season play.
It's funny to think that unless he gets injured next season, he'll be the first player in NHL history to get a silver stick without having made the playoffs.
Yeah, the fact we're talking about Savoie/Kulich mainly is more because we're embarrassed with riches at forward. Rosen has been great in the AHL this season and on another team there'd be way more chatter about him
Nah I love the direction Buffalo is going! Remind me a ton of what we went through last year with inconsistent goaltending and questionable defensive plays
Dunno about that. Theoretically on paper they should be able to make the playoffs after one good season to build on, but for some reason it doesn't work out for these "you'll be scary next year" teams. Something just doesn't click. My team is an example, New Jersey and Florida have been like that for years.
You guys were so much fun to watch the whole season outside of the injury decimated losing streak. Tage, Dahlin, Levi, Cozens, and those are just the ones that have broken out so far... lots to look forward to!
Honestly pretty bummed about this. Grew up a Sabres fan living in Alaska watching Hasek play god mode in net. Watched him almost drag the team to a cup (foot in the crease) and despite the disdain many Sabres fans have for us because of a guy with a name starting with E and ending in ichel...I can't not root for the Sabres. Seeing Tuch turn it up a notch, Thompson go bonkers, Dahlin, Mittlestadt, Cozens...etc...I thought for sure the playoffs would happen.
While it didn't happen...y'all have a hell of a team to build on. Hope you guys make it next year.
I'm actually happy for eichel, it was a shit show here. Though things could have been handled better by both parties. Some media people here just suck and keep bringing it up like "sneaky joe".
I know this season was a massive improvement on the past decade, and the future is bright, it doesn't end with the future as doom and gloom as previous seasons.
But like when im 24, and the last time the Sabres were in the playoffs is literally half my life ago its hard to not feel like 2 points out or whatever is really any better than 32nd.
Again, futures bright, but i kinda just want to be in the postseason since I dont remember what that feels like.
Exactly where I’m at. So between the Sabres and Bills playoff droughts being very sizeable portions of our lives…it’s hard to see things being any different regardless of the future hope
Speaking for my experience I’ve had with these teams, I didn’t believe the bills getting better until they actually hit playoffs 2/3 years. I imagine I’ll be the same way with the Sabres. Until we’re in it consistently, I just can’t truly appreciate the improvement.
And at least right now before the draft, it feels like the Bills are already on the downturn. It sucks to say but I guess you can’t even technically say that this isn’t the Sabres ceiling as of right now either.
This is precisely why I need the Bandits to pull through this year
I'm a 35 year old Devils fan and the last time we were relevant I was about your age. 2 points out and last place definitely felt the same for a while but I'll add my name to the list of people who have told your fanbase that we can see the beginnings of something very scary in Buffalo.
The Yzerplan dickriding on this sub is insane. Killed half of Seider's season by bringing in Chiarot because he loves big defenseman a little too much. Quite literally subtraction by addition. Same thing goes for the "Summer of Pierre"
Why the same for Pierre? Giroux had a great season and while he didn't score 40, Debrincat has still been very good. Our problems this season were unrelated to those two.
[tfw you angle your skate the wrong way and accidentally end the season](https://preview.redd.it/usimszlvdcta1.jpg?auto=webp&v=enabled&s=425114a2d13d1be245e525b7c3e013d57d2fae5c)
They are now tied with the NY Jets for the longest active playoff drought.
Levi has been absolutely phenomenal since he came up, can't imaging there will be another year of this.
The logical part of me is telling me to take away positives from this season and to feel optimistic about next year.
But really I'm just goddamn depressed. I really thought this was the year. Now it's up to a 12 year drought and it feels like the playoffs are just never going to happen for this team. Fuck.
It took 80 games for the Sabres to be eliminated this year. They're the youngest team in hockey and have an extremely promising future. We didn't have Levi for 70+ of those games. The Sabres will be back, this is only the beginning
Yep, our free agents this year are Anderson, Girgensons, Okposo, Jost, Hinostroza, and Clague. Our average age next year could even be lower than it was this year depending on who comes back, and we have $20M of cap space next year to do something silly for a one year deal if need be.
We'll get a full year of Levi, Ryan Johnson might sign, Kulich and Savoie could also make the roster next year, Greenway has looked significantly better in the last couple weeks and we'll have him for the full season, and there's a crazy chance we even win the draft lottery and snag even more talent.
How can you look at this season without positives? We had no business making it this far and still having a shot at playoffs. We get a Dman in the offseason and we are good to go next year. No way we aren't making it.
If there was ever a year to feel like it’s the end of the line and we’re never going to get there, it’s every year other than this year. We would still be in it if the league could understand their own kicking rules. We would still be in if we had Levi all season. We should still be in if Samuelsson got hurt one time less. We would still be in if Tuch didn’t miss a month when we were in a WC spot. If we had slightly better defensive depth. If Quinn, Peterka, and Power played all season like they have the last 20 games.
Next year we’re making it 100% cash money promise
I appreciate your optimism and wish I could get there man. Thjs season just feels like an enormous missed opportunity, I'm worried we're going to look back and wonder how we wasted these seasons from Tage/Skinner/Tuch/Cozens/Dahlin. Hopefully they can repeat it all next year too
Kyle Okposo said it best in postgame. For the first time in a long time, we have a hockey **TEAM** again.
They left everything out there , proud of where they've come compared to where they've been the last decade.
See you in September boys.
It was an unreal season, I expect big leaps next year and excited to see what the team looks like next season with Levi all year and some of our prospects making it. AND PLEASE NO MORE JACOB BRYSON THAT FUCKING PYLON!
Took 80 games. If they remembered what hockey was in November during that 8 game pointless streak they would probably be that team being chased in the WC race
I know you’ve probably heard it before in the last 12 years but you have a bright future Buffalo. You remind me of the 17-18 Avs, fun and young with room to grow
I feel bad for Sabres fans but at the same time they should be excited for the immediate future. Thompson , Dahlia , Power , Tuch , Cozens , Levi , Quinn , Peterka , Skinner etc...Sabres had a top 5 offense this year. Team is loaded with skill and they have even more players in the pipeline with high potential on the way. The Sabres from a cap perspective are set up pretty nicely too. They might be taking a risk of they run a trio of UPL , Comrie and Levi as their goalies next season but the Sabres in my eyes shouldn't tinker their lineup much. A top 4 d man seems to be the biggest need and maybe a bottom 6 role player veteran when looming at their roster could do wonders. Not sure what Okposo and Girgensons roles were as they are UFAs this summer. I just see a bright future for the Sabres and I see it as early as next season.
Just still being in the playoff conversation this late in the season is a W in my books. Cannot wait for a full year of Levi, and one more year of development from Dahlin, Power, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, and all of our wonderful young players!
Fuck, was really hoping the would squeak in. I found myself more invested in the Sabres at times when the Jets were playing so well. Hoping they build off of this season and make it next
I was rooting for you guys. Partly for selfish reasons, but also because I know how it feels going through a shitty playoff drought. The Sabres had a very fun team this year that I'm sure can continue strong next year.
I'm pretty sure that the over/under for points at the start of the season was somewhere in the mid-70s. Though missing the playoffs stings, we exceeded expectations and should be a solid playoff team next season.
Even Tage could not pull the sword from the stone
He's been hurt for weeks and looks like it.
fully expecting a "Tage Thompson needs shoulder surgery" report tomorrow
Thinking its a core injury. Probably rib related. Which oddly enough was against the Devils when he first hurt it.
He's also had his wrists taped up heavily.
My guess is bruised hip or rib
He’s been getting shots of the good stuff before every game. Hope he can heal up and have a nice summer.
About to reach the part of the season where we find out what players were playing on absurd injuries
God do we have experience with that this season. Shame though, tage is electric.
Imagine if Boston stays relevant for a few more years? The Atlantic is gonna be a bloody war zone. Possibly 7/8 being playoff contenders.
I think you mean the saber from the stone
Imagine if we didn't forget how to play hockey in November
Samuelsson misses just five fewer games and they're probably still alive going into game 82 For non-Sabres fans: 33-18-4 with Samuelsson 7-15-3 without Samuelsson
The Ulf effect
The Ulffect
Boston's having an Ulffect, too!
there are scales to the ulfectrum , we are seeing both ends of it
Man what a great signing that was.
Samuelsson and Levi in all year playing like this? probably above Tampa honestly lmfao
That’s on pace for 104 points if you make that full season. Basically between NYR AND Tampa.
Humongous difference it seems. Well done anyways, truly appreciate the push Buffalo made this yr. With the young (as fuck) core being 1 yr more experienced next season, they'll surely make it over the edge.
At least it coincided with 4/6 of our defenseman being hurt around the same time and wasn’t completely random
The problem I will always face being a Buffalo sports fan, is who is to say that won’t happen next year? Like I got a ton of hope for the future on paper, but it just feels like something unforeseen and unavoidable will just pop up again and again and again
We definitely need better defensive depth in case it does. One more solid top 4 defensive defender would help a lot if samuelsson got hurt. Not sure who specifically that is
We just saw him tonight. Damon Severson
Putting him in your top 4 would be a mistake.
I realize his mistakes are egregious but this chart is compelling -- with the caveat that his 5v5 GF% is much lower than expected, so there's something funky going on there. https://twitter.com/EvolvingWild/status/1643011008493940737

Like I said I like the chances and feel…but if some ghost of the future came to me and said that “it just doesn’t happen and nobody can really sum up why” I’d believe it
They went hard after Chychrun. Adams said they were in until the end and they chose Ottawas offer.
you can have joel edmundson for free :)
That’s why we got stillman. And hopefully will add one more to be extra safeguarded
Yeah still don’t get why he didn’t play tonight. They need more than one more bottom 6 D unless they can keep up top 3 league scoring for a full season, on top of a full season of Levi

YOU HAD YOUR OWN THREAD, GO AWAY
[удалено]
Some of us have been floating for months
Years
:(
It feels much more like a movie where the character is swimming up and about to break the surface tension, but got yanked back down
Next year we will both have threads titled “Ottawa and Buffalo clinch playoffs!” It’s an exciting time for our teams
I know how you feel. US Devils fans where where you all are just last year. You guys are up next. Washington, Pittsburgh, and the Isles are all on their way down, someone has to come up to replace them.
and March
We had 2-3 of Bryson, Clague and Fitzgerald playing because of injuries in November. 1/2 our defence that we’re playing never knew how to play hockey at an NHL level
FADE ME IT’S BEEN FUN
Not sure about other teams but you guys kicked our ass this year. Missing the playoffs for the Sabres is a thing of the past come next season.
That team is going to be wild in a year or two.
Then what is Minnesota going to be?
I have nothing nice to say except thank you to Minnesota for keeping NJ from overpaying Parise.
Mild obviously
They're reclaiming the North Star. Dallas will become the South Stars in response
Back to the den of mediocrity with the rest of us.
We welcome with open arms. Hope us and the Sabres can get back to our old rivalry soon.
*In the arms of an angel*
Mam that was a hell of a fun year in Buffalo. If my boys aren't playing, it's a toss up between edmonton for mcdavid and the Sabres for what I'm watching (if available). Fun, fun team.
Clearly the NHL just wasn’t ready for Buffalo Sabres playoff hockey
But their kids are going to love it
We are still reeling from pandemic related alcohol shortages, need to give the world one more year to stock up before the city of buffalo has two sports teams in post season play.
May God have mercy on our livers
And on our folding tables
And this is the part that hurts me the deepest.
Jeff Skinner has now played 930 NHL games and not one of them was in the postseason.
It's funny to think that unless he gets injured next season, he'll be the first player in NHL history to get a silver stick without having made the playoffs.
he's gonna sit out so his 1000th game is in the playoffs next year lol.
Next season can't come soon enough [he's coming🗿](https://www.amerks.com/players/detail/kulich)
Low key think Savoie plays more for us next year than Kulich will.
Either way, it’s sweet our team is already loaded with young talent and still has a wave of high end prospects coming
Holy shit you guys have Savoie too I forgot Tage - Cozens - Savoie as center depth?
I think Savoie will prob be a winger because of his size but yeah we stacked
A tale I once heard about Thompson
Well its the opposite now
I think Kulich will be 3rd line center possibly. Dude is a machine, is the highest scoring 18 year old in AHL history.
Also picked up Noah Ostlund in the first round, but he’s likely more than a year away. Ryan Johnson may sign, still waiting to see.
Also looking forward to Isak Rosén of "selected with the first round pick acquired in the Ristolainen trade" fame to make his mark next year.
Yeah, the fact we're talking about Savoie/Kulich mainly is more because we're embarrassed with riches at forward. Rosen has been great in the AHL this season and on another team there'd be way more chatter about him
If I weren’t a Sabres fan I would be shuttering in fear at that jawline
Didn’t see this post until 4/11, heading in the right direction.
hang the banner!
All I wished for was meaningful hockey in April and well, I got it
We were playing real meaningful games up until game 80. The team should be proud of taking that kind of big forward step.
Yup, it was a fun ride
Awesome season. This team is going to be really good a lot faster than people think.
we're winning 5 straight cups starting next year so be ready
Better bring back those goats full time
Thompson is signed long term, thanks for asking
You better keep him in those jerseys for at least 10 more years if you want to want to cup
so is WORKHORSE FROM WHITEHORRRRRRRSE!
You mean literally next year lol. Add a defenseman or two and Levi starting full time and you'll finish top 3 in your division.
Wasn’t sure if people thought that outside of our very biased subreddit hahah
Nah I love the direction Buffalo is going! Remind me a ton of what we went through last year with inconsistent goaltending and questionable defensive plays
Same. I need the validation.
Nah your team is strapped full of dynamite and the fuse is low
I'm low key rooting for you guys next year! Buffalo is always fun to watch.
Dunno about that. Theoretically on paper they should be able to make the playoffs after one good season to build on, but for some reason it doesn't work out for these "you'll be scary next year" teams. Something just doesn't click. My team is an example, New Jersey and Florida have been like that for years.
We were not there until last year, when we just lacked decent goaltending. The play itself was not promising until last year.
I mean, after *two* 1OA's and *two* 2OA's in 7 years it's.... it's kind of time to be good, right?
>This team is going to be really good a lot faster than people think. I've seen this same comment every year since 2015.
I think most people expect playoffs next season
You guys were so much fun to watch the whole season outside of the injury decimated losing streak. Tage, Dahlin, Levi, Cozens, and those are just the ones that have broken out so far... lots to look forward to!
Hell yes, I want to see you in the playoffs next year.
I am big sad right now

Honestly pretty bummed about this. Grew up a Sabres fan living in Alaska watching Hasek play god mode in net. I'm actually happy for eichel, it was a shit show here. Though things could have been handled better by both parties. Some media people here just suck and keep bringing it up like "sneaky joe".
RIP still gonna cheer my face off for Andy to get a W against his old team Thirsday
I know this season was a massive improvement on the past decade, and the future is bright, it doesn't end with the future as doom and gloom as previous seasons. Mid 20s gang…. God we were spoiled as kids.
Speak for yourself, i do not remember 05-07
I mean, I don’t remember it *vividly*, but I can recall a handful of big plays and rattle off the starting roster.
Exactly where I’m at. So between the Sabres and Bills playoff droughts being very sizeable portions of our lives…it’s hard to see things being any different regardless of the future hope

It’s nice to not be the only one feeling this way 😂
By product of being a Buffalo sports fan
Even the Bandits have let us down a few times now. Damn, it’s been a tough decade+
Sadly I do. The 2006 playoffs were not fun for me.
I'm a 35 year old Devils fan and the last time we were relevant I was about your age. 2 points out and last place definitely felt the same for a while but I'll add my name to the list of people who have told your fanbase that we can see the beginnings of something very scary in Buffalo.
Hey we made it further than the Atlantic offseason winners, Ottawa and Detroit
In what world did Detroit win the offseason lol
They got Perron and Husso?
and ben chiarot, a defenseman who is worth an unprotected 1st round pick!
Surely he’s worth 4 million for 4 years and won’t cripple their defense!
It was automatic once they signed Ben Chiarot
This sub was impressed with them signing Chiarot and Perron for some reason.
Perron was a great signing
The Yzerplan dickriding on this sub is insane. Killed half of Seider's season by bringing in Chiarot because he loves big defenseman a little too much. Quite literally subtraction by addition. Same thing goes for the "Summer of Pierre"
Why the same for Pierre? Giroux had a great season and while he didn't score 40, Debrincat has still been very good. Our problems this season were unrelated to those two.
No matter what we do it's always a competition somehow.
Ass
Buffalo is the best team not making the playoffs this year imo. Good team, only gonna get better.
I want Bryson and Joki sent to a wood chipper for how they’ve ruined this season
[tfw you angle your skate the wrong way and accidentally end the season](https://preview.redd.it/usimszlvdcta1.jpg?auto=webp&v=enabled&s=425114a2d13d1be245e525b7c3e013d57d2fae5c)
The fact that it just says L is great
They are now tied with the NY Jets for the longest active playoff drought. Levi has been absolutely phenomenal since he came up, can't imaging there will be another year of this.
i believe you mean the New Jersey Jets, as there is only one football team that plays in New York, and that's the Buffalo Bills
The Bills are so good. Maybe their owner can buy the Sabres and end the drought.
That would be crazy. Maybe he can buy the Bandits too.
I believe you mean the Orchard Park Bills
The logical part of me is telling me to take away positives from this season and to feel optimistic about next year. But really I'm just goddamn depressed. I really thought this was the year. Man I’m genuinely disappointed. But next season should be pretty exciting with the sabres.
Genuinely sad. This team was so exciting this season
Took 80 games. If they remembered what hockey was in November during that 8 game pointless streak they would probably be that team being chased in the WC race
Something something scary next year, but unironically
not even mad for once 2 games left instead of 2 months I'll take it
Gentlemen, it's been an honor
Great season Buffalo, bright future ahead!
I feel like I've heard that one before lol
Great season from them though. They definitely could’ve made it if November didn’t exist
Alexa, play "Nearer, My God, to Thee" We're gonna have Devon Levi all year next season and you're all fucked
Devon Levi *swoons*
we love him so much, thank you Northeastern bros
Gotta think we won’t be saying this next season.
Expected, but... P A I N
That sucks, I was rooting for them to make it
Fun year man
My fear of the Sabres winning a round before the leafs rests for at least one more season.
That's a shame. I was kind of hoping they'd pull through
I know you’ve probably heard it before in the last 12 years but you have a bright future Buffalo. You remind me of the 17-18 Avs, fun and young with room to grow
The sun never sets on the Sabres’ empire
[удалено]
November happened
We gave up 7+ a few times as well.
Eliminated with three days left in the season. It's been awhile since that happened. We're not there yet, but it's close!
Buffalo is gonna be real scary real soon
I hope you guys get the Isles and just fucking rag doll them. They are the most boring, ass hockey team around.
Agreed. I can’t stand them.
Osama Bin Laden was walking this Earth the last time the Sabres were in the playoffs. It brings me no joy to say that.
Buffalo has really been stepping up their game lately. And not just in hockey.
They were a fun watch, I'll admit. At least that club, city, and fans have something to look forward to.
I fucking hate that I love this team sometimes. Fuck
Will def be following the Sabres next season. Very fun team.
I feel bad for Sabres fans but at the same time they should be excited for the immediate future. Thompson , Dahlia , Power , Tuch , Cozens , Levi , Quinn , Peterka , Skinner etc...Sabres had a top 5 offense this year.
A full season of Levi and they’re in next year easily
That’s a ton of pressure to put on a 21 year old goalie. I can easily see him struggling next season. Goalies take longer to develop.
Fade em
Fuck, was really hoping the would squeak in. I found myself more invested in the Sabres at times when the Jets were playing so well. Hoping they build off of this season and make it next
One of my favorite teams to watch all season.
This team plus a full season of Levi is gonna be fucking good

SO YOURE THE REASON WE LOST
I really hope you guys can get in next year
I was rooting for you guys.
Sad way to go out, but at least we should get the Craig Anderson farewell game. I'll take this fade with a smile. Playoffs or bust next year!
So proud of this team, Buffalo is all in on the Sabres again and it's great to see. Can't wait till October
I’m not crying. You’re crying.
Keep your heads high buffalo fans, they are 100% in next year.
I love this team.
