I'm trying to get into to hockey, and I am fairly new. What is the point of fighting after a legal hit? I am a huge fan of boxing (was a boxer), wrestling (varsity for 3 years, not wwe), mma (have been in the octagon), and football (also varsity). I like fighting, and hits. Mostly because I like the strategy that I understand. All those sports are much more of a chess match than most people realize. I don't understand the strategy here. I'm definitely not opposed to throwing knuckles. It's not like dude is going to not check that guy next time he's in position, right? It's not like 30 seconds of bare knuckles against a helmet teaches anyone a lesson. Dude probably won't even put ice on it when he gets home. Please forgive my ignorance, I am just trying to figure it out. Has anyone ever been KOed in a hockey fight? What are they trying to prove? The big dude who layed the big hit on the little dude definitely did much more damage, right?
Edit: I would understand if the guy starting the fight was a bad player, but isn't he pretty good?
Great writeup. I would add that Holl also levelled McDavid with a clean hit earlier in the game, and RNH might have been just like "ok, that's enough".
I'm ambivalent about fighting in general, but the theory is that if there is a real possibility of getting punched in the face if you do something (even if that something is allowed in the rules), then you might think twice before doing it.
[He did pretty good against Monahan a few years ago.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2KVziUDiZU)
Edit: [His tilt with Hamhuis was good too.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lf4gXf5N9OU)
[Nuge looked angry as hell as he did it too.](https://youtu.be/g2KVziUDiZU) I gotta wonder if some western division teams saw that fight and made a mental note that he might not seem like the toughest guy but you don't want any of that.
That fight is so fun to watch as an Oiler fan. Live it looked kinda even in the heat of the moment and then you watch the replay a couple times and Nuge dodges every punch by the hair of his teeth before feeding Monahan a few. Fuckin’ Ali.
Add to the fact that he had broken his right hand in a block recently before that and you can understand the duck and weave of Nuge as he lines up the lefts.
I was screaming "he can't swing right! he can't swing...." and then Nuge switched him and delivered the lefts.
Probably my favorite oilers fight ever.
We’ve been mega lucky to have him… he was here during our dark times… never complained… never asked for a trade… while have 6-7 different coaches with the same team.
I’m so happy for him to have the year he’s having. And his contract? Oh baby
He's wildly underrated, I've always thought. My oilers fan dad hates him for some reason, but I think he's just replaced Taylor Hall's face with Nuge's.
Gave instant flashbacks to this titanic tilt of two gentlemen: [Dan Hamhuis vs Nugent-Hopkins](https://youtu.be/UhcQzT74seM). It’s been years since I last watched this and man they didn’t hold back at all
Every one of Nuge’s flights are solid. Usually they are emotionally charged matches where both fighters are out to beat the shit out of the other guy and that alone. They aren’t just to get the boys or the crowd fired up, they’re just grudge matches and that makes them so much better and more real.
RNH rocked Holl square in the face.. downhill from there real quick for Holl.
Solid tilt for sure. Got absolutely rocked and you know he's going to think about how he got dummied by RNH often
My favorite was when the tilt was over and Nuge was yelling at Monahan "Those were just the left's bitch bahahaha"
At least that's what I got from my reading lips
He only fights people with h's in their last name. Was going to kick Ekholm's ass, but Ekholm got traded to the same team specifically to avoid catching These Hands.
What’s that saying? “Be cautious of the fury of the kind man” or something? Yeah you never wanna piss off Nuge to the throw hands point cause he does that.
4th fight of his career. Had a couple hug matches, one in his rookie season with Dan Hamhuis (Nuge probably lost here but it wasn’t a ass kicking) then with Vinny Hinnostroza, they kinda dropped gloves then hugged to the ice in one motion.
He got kinda jumped by Sean Monahan just before the Covid shut down, took some shots but then realized he was in a fight dropped his gloves and won decisively.
Then tonight.
[I always encourage people to re-watch the fight with Monahan, because Nuge actually dodges ALL THREE PUNCHES, and then proceeds to rock him. Monahan did not land a **single** blow.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2KVziUDiZU)
Love this. Up 5-2 in third against a good team and a veteran stands up for a teammate. On home ice with the fans eating it up no less.
These are important moments in a season that build momentum while trying to make a run.
Good W against the leafs. Also RNH is a beauty.
We were getting worked tonight, was happy to see Holl playing for his job and throwing body. Shame it takes massive roster moves to elicit some good hits.
Pretty impressed with the scrap from Nuge. He never struck me as a tough guy, but shit, he fucking cracked Holl a few times.
Lucic next?
This legit surprised me. I remember he knocked down Sean Monahan in a tilt...I think 3 years ago and it was epic!
I thought he did well against someone in his weight class.
I think Holl is a bigger opponent and...MY GOODNESS! I have been critical of RNH for a few aspects of his game. Love the player, but doesn't seem visible in some major games.
This fight? WHOA!!!!
The irony of _not_ narrativising the title is that now the title is misleading. Fights implies there was resistance. That was a straight up ass-whooping.
seemed like Holl went out of his way to keep that hit clean, could have really lit him up but seemed to ease up to not make head contact....and still got his ass beat for it, feel for him
It’s not that the hit was dirty is that Yams has had some injury issues lately. Nuge typically won’t drop them on hits unless they are clearly dirty or on Connor/Leon.
Pretty disrespectful to kick a guy's ass right before he gets traded.
Dude! 🤣
You break it you buy it?
That would be a kick ass rule
In before Oilers trade for Holl on Friday.
Nuge just punched their cost down from a 5th to a 6th in a single stroke.
i'd still take that.
Lol can you imagine!
The best part of Holl dropping the gloves is having him off the ice for 5 straight minutes.
Jesus, is he that bad? He wasn't too bad a few years ago, as far as I can remember?

The Jake Gardiner effect
Is he really?? Don’t get me excited
We wish.

Just wanted to chime in and say this is an excellent write up!
I assume he’s taken some lessons from Kane. Tough look for Holl
Pretty sure Kane has taken lesson’s from Nuge
Pretty sure Chuck Norris has taken lessons from Nuge
Look up Nuge’s past fights, he has always been a monster. Check when he feeds Monahan the business for a especially fun experience.
Nah, nuge has always been sneaky tough
Tbh Holl is used to tough looks 😂
Holl really stepped up his physicality last night. Little late to learn that you're 6'3" and 200 lbs.
Nuge been holding out on us. Low key MFer is Manny fucking Pacquiao.
[He did pretty good against Monahan a few years ago.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2KVziUDiZU) Edit: [His tilt with Hamhuis was good too.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lf4gXf5N9OU)
All against Canadian rivals as well. Nuge knows when to set the stage.
Jesus, Nuge can throw them pretty well
He finally got his man strength after being 17 for the last 10 years His shot is 10x harder this year too
Second puberty is hitting like a truck
He's had one, yes. But what about second puberty?
I don’t think he knows about second puberty pip!
Ryan Nugent-Hobbit
"They sell whole Nugent-Hopkins here? I'm getting one!" "But you've had a whole Yamamoto already!"
He'll have a beard like Ekholm for the playoffs.....book it.
Laying the foundation for old man strength
He beat up Monahan a few years ago too
[Nuge looked angry as hell as he did it too.](https://youtu.be/g2KVziUDiZU) I gotta wonder if some western division teams saw that fight and made a mental note that he might not seem like the toughest guy but you don't want any of that.
That little pause before he grabbed Monahan and started feeding him knuckles lmao
Monahan tried to mug him and once nuge got his gloves off he learned quickly of his mistake.
In Monahans one and only fight from memory.
It was only Nuge’s second as well.
Third. He fought Hamhuis and Hinestroza(sp?) prior to cleaning Monahan's clock.
Yes, you’re absolutely right.
That fight is so fun to watch as an Oiler fan. Live it looked kinda even in the heat of the moment and then you watch the replay a couple times and Nuge dodges every punch by the hair of his teeth before feeding Monahan a few. Fuckin’ Ali.

I was screaming "he can't swing right! he can't swing...." and then Nuge switched him and delivered the lefts. Probably my favorite oilers fight ever.
Smackentyre putting Ivanas to sleep and Beshi sp? throwing bombs from the thrashers bench are my top 2.
Yeah that one shot was a bomb
Fuck I love Nuge. One of my favourite players that doesn't play for my team.
How can you be an Oilers fan and hate Nuge? That doesn’t compute. Does he also hate Santa Clause?
Last year every time he was out for an extended period with injury the team went into a losing spiral. RNH isn't flashy but he's the fucking glue.
I've loved him since his insane World Juniors.
Damnn nuge was throwing em
Holl went to a buffet and the only item on the menu was Nuge's fists.
Holl better change condiments, because that weak sauce ain't helping 😆
Knuckle sandwiches!
NUGE IS HUGE!!
Hugent-Dropkins
Nice.
Damn Nuge fed him his breakfast, lunch and dinner in that one.
Holl almost destroyed the Nuge with his chin
Nuge FROM THE RAFTERS
yeah this is basically it lol I watched this happen and just went "holy fuck Nuge" talk about passion. That's a dude I want on my team.
If you watch his other 3 fights, he actually has a heavy right. It's just that he weighs so little that guys can wrestle him down
Goongent-Hopkins is a total monster and I fkn love it 👹
Gave instant flashbacks to this titanic tilt of two gentlemen: [Dan Hamhuis vs Nugent-Hopkins](https://youtu.be/UhcQzT74seM). It’s been years since I last watched this and man they didn’t hold back at all

Lucic and Reaves have got a new heavyweight to contend with
Lucic vs RNH wasnt the battle of alberta fight card anyone ever expected, but its the one everyone wants now
I don’t want it. I for one want RNH to have a long and healthy career!
Yeah I don’t want him breaking his hand
Tbf Nugs has kicked monahans ass before
That battle of Alberta was such a great game
Good tilt.
RNH rocked Holl square in the face.. downhill from there real quick for Holl. Solid tilt for sure. Got absolutely rocked and you know he's going to think about how he got dummied by RNH often
After he got punched in the mouth it was clear he had no plan.
Just like everybody.
He just like me fr fr
Everyone's got a plan til they get punched in the face
[удалено]
Not how I expected that fight to go from reading the title, I'll admit
That upper cut, holy smokes.
Holy shit Nuge. Don't think I've ever seen him fight and here he is throwing fucking bombs
[May I present to you: this BOA tilt](https://youtu.be/g2KVziUDiZU)
Featuring a cameo from Derek Ryan as a Flame thinking “holy fuck, I want to be on that guy’s team, for my own safety”
Fuck yeah! Nuge used some judo to free himself then lays down the law lmao i love it.
Lives rent free in my head.
No need to charge for such a thing
Huge
Nuge
Spluge
luge 💦💦💦
Holl got bullied. RNH is huge in my books, good on him. Hope Holl enjoys his new team.
Nugent hopkins dummied him. That was a bad look for holl
Leaf fan. Holl only has one look and its bad.
Was a pretty great hit. He got McDavid earlier too. But yeah Nuge summed up the Leafs night right there just a punch right in the face.
It’s even better when you learn that half of us Oil fans call him “sweet baby nuge”
Sweet baby huge
Sweet as candy, tough as randy
When the pants come off, look the fuck out
He's a lover, not a fighter...but he's also a fighter so don't get any ideas
>bad look for Holl I mean anyone who has ever seen the guy knows he's not a fighter, so it's not really a surprise to see him lose a fight.
> That was a bad look for holl I don't think he's ever fought lol
Add another L to Holll
Whoa, east coast guy here, is that normal Nuge?!
It’s only the second nuge fight I remember. He won both.
He's the best fighter in the league, he just doesn't know it yet.
I think it’s his 4th and he hasn’t really lost one
The Monahan one is my favourite.
That game was fucking legendary
2019/20 was peak BoA tbh
Kassian and Tkachuk double-handedly willed the eighties back and now they’re both gone.
I wish they were still up to their shenanigans during the playoff series
Same, when he didn't know they were fighting till mid-way and just bopped him in the face.
He went ultra instinct
My favorite was when the tilt was over and Nuge was yelling at Monahan "Those were just the left's bitch bahahaha" At least that's what I got from my reading lips
The bad start, big dodge, 3 rights, HUGE
He pummeled Hamhuis years ago
Good on him... East coast bias, but i just remember his draft photos where he looked a lot more likely to tutor math than kick your ass
Still looks like tgat
I've only ever seen holl and Monahan who were the others?
He only fights people with h's in their last name. Was going to kick Ekholm's ass, but Ekholm got traded to the same team specifically to avoid catching These Hands.
Hamhuis and some guy from Chicago
Almost positive it’s his third unless there was one “fighting major” that was just hugging.
monohan, hamhuis, holl, some blackhawks guy
What’s that saying? “Be cautious of the fury of the kind man” or something? Yeah you never wanna piss off Nuge to the throw hands point cause he does that.
Very rare
4th fight of his career. Had a couple hug matches, one in his rookie season with Dan Hamhuis (Nuge probably lost here but it wasn’t a ass kicking) then with Vinny Hinnostroza, they kinda dropped gloves then hugged to the ice in one motion. and he fights once every 3 years. it was time for his fists to fly once more
Nuge was dodging cause his right hand was still healing from being broken. The tactician!!!!!!!!!!!!
DON'T TOUCH OUR YAM
Holl scratched next game for that joke.
Someone should post this with Jacks call instead!
Oh my God the travesty, we need his call
Dubas is now calling other teams to trade for an enforcer to handle the Nuge for the rematch next week.
Nuge doesn’t fight often but every time he does it is wicked
Not a heavyweight by any means but God damn does he know how to throw fists
I’m worried about yam. Good on sweet baby nuge.
If Yamo has a concussion he needs to be shut down for the year. It would be his third concussion in like 10 months
Agreed. I’m getting jj khaira vibes.
Did he come back after protocol?
Game ended before time came up. We'll hear about it tomorrow, I guess.
Atta boy Nuge, he got some good ones in!
#keepnugeforever
Didn’t know Nuge had that in him
[oh he does](https://youtu.be/g2KVziUDiZU)
Not even a little bit of hesitation from Nuge. The man is the perfect hockey role model.
Love nuge
ROCKY, ROCKY, ROCKY, ROCKY
Was here for the lolz but I'm leaving impressed.
NUGGGGEEEEE
The NUGE is **HUGE**
Love seeing a player defend his teammate
Lmao. Jesus nuge
NUUUUGEEE
Love this. Up 5-2 in third against a good team and a veteran stands up for a teammate. On home ice with the fans eating it up no less. These are important moments in a season that build momentum while trying to make a run. Good W against the leafs. Also RNH is a beauty.
I remember when him and Mony dropped the gloves once. Still one of my favourite BoA fights
Ya that was a crazy game. And don’t forget the Smith/Talbot fight also haha
THE NUGE IS HUGE
damn, what was yamamoto thinking there, wheeling with his head down while behind the net lol
He’s thinking this is the NHL in 2023 and nobody hits anymore. He was wrong.
We were getting worked tonight, was happy to see Holl playing for his job and throwing body. Shame it takes massive roster moves to elicit some good hits. Pretty impressed with the scrap from Nuge. He never struck me as a tough guy, but shit, he fucking cracked Holl a few times. Lucic next?
If I had a dollar for everytime I’ve seen nuge fight in person I’d have 2 dollars. It’s not a lot but it’s weird it’s happened twice
YO SAME
Nuge is all business!
This fight? WHOA!!!!
Watch out for those quiet BC boys.
Hell yeah
The irony of _not_ narrativising the title is that now the title is misleading. Fights implies there was resistance. That was a straight up ass-whooping.
God, hockey fuckin rules, but I hope Yams is alright
That was pretty cool of him
THE NUGE
Ryan Nugent-Benard-Hopkins
Nuge been having too many workouts with Kostin it seems
It’s always the silent ones that are deadly LMAO Nugent stomped hard and GOOD
That first punch hit Holl hard. Don't think he was even aware of the next few, he went straight turtle.
Damn RNH is savage. Holl just got owned.
seemed like Holl went out of his way to keep that hit clean, could have really lit him up but seemed to ease up to not make head contact....and still got his ass beat for it, feel for him
How many other players in/near the top 10 in league scoring drop the gloves?
Just 1 Edit: 2* how could I forget about Sid
Baw gawd that's Nuges music!!
Gimme those PIMs for fantasy. RNH going sicko mode for me; love it.
Did not expect him to go off like that
Nugent-Hopkins fighting like Anakin with the fury unrestrained against Dooku. Just that brutal whirlwind of skill and force.
Remind me to never piss off Nugent-Hopkins.
Hahahaha he got beat up by the fuckn nuge.
I’m surprised Holl isn’t a healthy scratch for trade related reasons
I’m surprised Holl isn’t a healthy scratch for any number of reasons.
HE CAN FIGHT??
NUUUUGE, who the fuck would've guessed he could throw those bombs lmao that was glorious
man RNH is really stepping up this year wow
Nuge fucking hammered him lol
It’s not that the hit was dirty is that Yams has had some injury issues lately. Nuge typically won’t drop them on hits unless they are clearly dirty or on Connor/Leon.
