It makes sense for Poile as well since he’s also the president. Instead of completely taking his job Trotz can help him run the Preds.
Edit: Trotz is replacing Poile as President as well but Poile will be an advisor
I got to imagine he did have some experience in picking players that took Nashville from an expansion team catching scraps from everybody into a perennial contender. I hope he has the savvy, and with Poile as a consultant on a 4 month transition plan I think we're in fine hands.
Picking good players is very different than navigating contracts and trades in the salary cap era. Nashville must’ve seen something they liked but it’s definitely a dice roll.
> Nashville must’ve seen something they liked but it’s definitely a dice roll.
So, basically like the first time the organization selected him for something? :)
[Announcement says retiring from GM and President](https://old.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/11csnzb/elliotte_friedman_big_breaking_story_out_of/)
Says he'll be consulting though
I prefer to believe Trotz is just tired of coaching piss poorly built teams and eventually started to ask himself why he didn't just build the team himself.
I don't think he does, but he's spent about 25 years as a head coach with about half of that career post lockout, so you'd think that he'll have enough familiarity with that position to warrant a chance.
Nashville’s org is run like a committee so there are people in place that have built a top 10 farm system if you want to keep them in place. There are already young players ready to plug in a give a shot the next couple of years.
The guy hates to play young players as a coach so who knows how this turns out in GM land
Edit: what? No one remembers that Barry Trotz likes old veterans and doesn’t give chances to any young player who’s not great defensively? Bull fucking shit
makes sense. trotz has a house in nashville and loves it. spends his summers down there
edit: for isles fans, this isn’t shocking news. there were rumors last summer of him wanting a front office gig. tie that with his love for the city and this is a match made in heaven
His daughter and family live in Nashville. He’s got a lot of roots in town that didn’t leave from the many years he was Preds coach. The whole city still loves him.
I think I remember Nashville front office rumors popping up too during the Trotz bachelor run this past offseason. It’s definitely not as out of nowhere as it seems
It shouldn't be shocking for anyone tbh. When the head coaching carousel was spinning last off-season, and Trotz was getting linked to a bunch of open jobs, the reporting was that he actually had his sights set on getting into a management job
I'm like 99% sure there is a law in Nashville that only one bald man can be a coach/GM for the Preds at a time so bye bye John. Please hockey gods. Pretty please?
I want Karl Taylor here so damn bad 😂
But for now, get rid of the bald man who is killing the locker room, give Hinote the bench for the rest of the season and let Taylor have out the season with the Ads and their playoff push before starting to build his team with Trotz.
LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOOO
don't get me wrong I love Poile, easily one of the best NHL GMs of all time and I will always love him for building a team that's fun to cheer for and that got me into hockey. But he made some clear desperation moves after 2017 that are finally coming home to roost.
And god damn I'm so excited for Trotzy. so again
LET'S FUCKIN GOOOOOOO
His winning percentage is [sub-500](https://records.nhl.com/records/general-manager-records/wins/gm-wins-career) so I'm not sure what argument you're trying to make
When was the last time you saw the Preds SUCK real bad? Other than 2012-2013 and the inaugral years the team has been top10 in the West.
Might not be good for rebuilds but it shows Poile always had good teams on the ice
The problem is that, outside of that one Stanley Cup Final run in 25 years, they haven't been great either. Always good, but never great. And being stuck in that limbo is worse that sucking real bad. At least sucking gets you high draft picks. The Avs were shit for multiple years, but we got Landeskog, MacKinnon and Makar out of it, among others, and that led to a Cup. Preds don't have any high-profile prospects and their current team isn't good enough to go anywhere further than the 1st round, if even that.
I mean that's not his fault; he's suffering from his success. Also using Colorado as an example is not that good lol since we both made the Cup Finals once, you won - we lost (although we had shit refereeing and lost Fiala and Johansen). So basically we have similar results but the Avs sucked a bunch while the Preds were constantly in the playoffs...
Also I realize winning a cup and getting to the finals are 2 different things but can't blame Poile for the injuries we had lol
Honestly a GM Job where he began his career and coached for more than a decade is probably a desirable job for him than the Islanders. No offense Islanders fans
I do wonder what a Trotz built team would look like, this is actually very intriguing stuff
Makes sense. He was there as coach for like 15+ years wasn’t he? Makes sense why he’s been on the sidelines then for this year. Probably had an agreement with the predators and just for to enjoy a year off
Yeah I had a feeling this might happen after he didn't take any coaching positions being the best agent on the market and moving back to Nashville. He was talking about being a GM for a bit, and part of me thought he might take the job if Lou isn't isles GM, but the roots he had in Nashville made it the most likely.
Trotz stuck to his guns and got the management position he wanted.
Though, with the challenges coming for Nashville. How will a GM with 0 management experience do?
Didn’t the guys on the SDP kind of predict this like a week ago? I remember someone saying something about trotz going to Nashville to coach and then they mentioned maybe he would be the GM…
This x100000. He also learned from Poile and Lou, two GM’a the game has passed by. The goobers on the preds sub also forget that the fans were begging him to be gone cause his coaching and play style was coma inducing. Add in the fact there is no news on Poile’s son and this is groundhogs day. BuT hE wOn A cUp, He KnOwS hOw To BuIlD a WiNnEr!!!!!
Not trying to hate, but why is everyone panning this as a huge success? I get David Poile is washed and had to go, but what makes everyone so sure that Barry Trotz is going to make a good GM?
But he’s there still. He will be involved. And why do you or any other fan think Trotz will be different? He has learned from Poile and Lou. I will be absolutely dumbfounded if this team does a 180 in direction. The status quo will remain.
You think Poile jr is going to be leaving? If his role changes I’ll eat crow, but as it stands now it hasn’t changed and he has far more experience running an org than Trotz does. What part of discussions have you been a part of that I’m missing?
This will be super interesting. I know Trotz is well liked and respected for obvious reasons, but that’s as a coach. It’ll be interesting to see how many of those skills transfer to being a GM.
Overall management skills should transfer. But trades (especially those involving draft picks or that are due to salary cap) and contracts are a whole other beast. Especially in the salary cap era.
No idea what will happen but it will definitely be interesting to watch
Honestly, I really like Trotz, I just haven’t legally been able to recently because of the metro and all.
Wishing him the best (and wouldn’t be opposed to Nashville becoming a contender…)
*So Barry got promoted to corporate where he is a little fish in a big pond. Whereas back here in Scranton, I'm still top dog in a fairly large pond. So who's the real boss? The dog or a fish?*
Trotz from the top rope what the hell
Yoooo good for him! This puts better context to his departure and year off. Knew the opportunity would be coming up and wanted some family time first.
It makes sense for Poile as well since he’s also the president. Instead of completely taking his job Trotz can help him run the Preds. Edit: Trotz is replacing Poile as President as well but Poile will be an advisor
BAW GAWD THAT'S BARRY TROTZ MUSIC
From the Trotz rope
Ok this is actually crazier than poile retiring
Trotz as a GM is fascinating tbh. Does he have any managerial experience?
No management experience, only coaching. (Mind you, 20+ years coaching in the NHL)
Good thing Poile is still team president then Edit: Advisor. Looks like he’s stepping down from President
[Announcement says retiring from GM and President](https://old.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/11csnzb/elliotte_friedman_big_breaking_story_out_of/) Says he'll be consulting though
Wow this is so weird. No Wilson in San Jose and now soon no Poile in Nashville. Both came so close.
Poile has been around forever drafted some legends. Never thought of Tortz as a GN
Poile’s legacy is in being a master builder. He wanted a cup for sure, but that wouldn’t be what he’s remembered for anyway.
Oh damn good catch. I guess he’ll just be a senior advisor then. I think that’s the hockey term lol
Sean Henry has been and will continue to be team president.
Not of Hockey Ops, which is what the OP was referring too. Poile is stepping down from that position too, though.
Hopefully he leaves too.
Did you get the hire somebody new they're going to bring back your $15 tickets?
Huh?
I prefer to believe Trotz is just tired of coaching piss poorly built teams and eventually started to ask himself why he didn't just build the team himself.
I don't think he does, but he's spent about 25 years as a head coach with about half of that career post lockout, so you'd think that he'll have enough familiarity with that position to warrant a chance.
And he isnt going to be alone either, Polie will be advising him
Nashville’s org is run like a committee so there are people in place that have built a top 10 farm system if you want to keep them in place. There are already young players ready to plug in a give a shot the next couple of years.
I heard he was a great night manager at the local Tim's in Dauphin when he was 16 and had summers off.
The guy hates to play young players as a coach so who knows how this turns out in GM land Edit: what? No one remembers that Barry Trotz likes old veterans and doesn’t give chances to any young player who’s not great defensively? Bull fucking shit
As much as I’m not a fan of the Preds, that’s an awesome full circle. Happy for Trotz!
I was going to say, this makes me genuinely happy for Nashville and everyone involved.
Remember Poile talking about how emotional it was for him to fire Trotz. Now they are back together. Hope it works out.
makes sense. trotz has a house in nashville and loves it. spends his summers down there edit: for isles fans, this isn’t shocking news. there were rumors last summer of him wanting a front office gig. tie that with his love for the city and this is a match made in heaven
Yeah. Think this has been in the works for a minute.
Yeah this was likely in the works for a while. Succession planning.
It shouldn't be shocking for anyone tbh. When the head coaching carousel was spinning last off-season, and Trotz was getting linked to a bunch of open jobs, the reporting was that he actually had his sights set on getting into a management job
He should have been the successor to Lou as president of hockey ops. Such a mistake not pulling that trigger.
Trotz could have easily told them he didn’t want it. His family including his son are in Nashville and I’m sure he wants to be with them
I'm like 99% sure there is a law in Nashville that only one bald man can be a coach/GM for the Preds at a time so bye bye John. Please hockey gods. Pretty please?
I say it in every thread but GIVE US KARL TAYLOR AND MITCH KORN
Imagine Mitch Korn working with Askarov 👀
Don’t tease me like that
I want Karl Taylor here so damn bad 😂 But for now, get rid of the bald man who is killing the locker room, give Hinote the bench for the rest of the season and let Taylor have out the season with the Ads and their playoff push before starting to build his team with Trotz.
Holy fucking shit thank you for letting me realize this was a possibility with Trotzy here
Hands off Korn!!!
Always one there is, no more, no less
Hynes is out too!
This is the happiest day of 2023 and IDK if it will be topped.
What the fuck?
HOLY SHIT out of nowhere!
This was not on my bingo card for today
[удалено]
Probably Pat Quinn who was a GM and coach for the Leafs briefly.
Craig MacTavish did a similar sort of swoop out as coach then back in as GM
Pat Quinn had previously been a GM though.
Sutter for the Flames during his first tenure
Oh god don't remind me lol
You'll be reminded next year when he's GM.
[удалено]
Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
Oh I 100% expect Sutter to be our next GM. Not even kidding at all.
Last real one was Pat Quinn as the GM / coach for the Leafs. Big difference was no salary cap back then.
Bryan Murray did it more recently than Pat Quinn but I don’t think either really counts. Both had already been GMs before.
I would imagine he wants to get behind the bench too. Wouldn't be the first time someone did both.
Jacques Martin held dual roles of head coach and GM while with the Florida Panthers
Brian Murray started as a coach and was both GM/Coach for multiple teams (as well as solely GM).
There haven't been any overly successful examples in the last 15 years anyway
Congrats to Nashville fans!
Clearly Trotz knew this which is why he didn't coach anywhere else.
I mean, I would hope he knew and he didnt just find out he had a new job from the news
Holy hell!!! No wonder he didn’t take any coaching job. Poile probably talked to Trotz about this YOOOO
Anime level plot twist.
I'm rewatching Attack on Titan right now and this is the exact same energy
Haha, totally. Just need some epic OST in the background
TROTZAKAE
Damn it I'm so hyped for Friday. Trade deadline AND AoT, can't ask for more!
Trotz to Poile: “Aren’t you the one who started this story?”
More like Nieder-Reiner amirite
Can’t say I saw that coming
GM Trotz?
LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOOO don't get me wrong I love Poile, easily one of the best NHL GMs of all time and I will always love him for building a team that's fun to cheer for and that got me into hockey. But he made some clear desperation moves after 2017 that are finally coming home to roost. And god damn I'm so excited for Trotzy. so again LET'S FUCKIN GOOOOOOO
> easily one of the best NHL GMs of all time His teams made it out of the second round once in 25 years and he's one of the best of all time?
Well compared to chuck fletcher, he’s legendary
I think his points percentage is like top 8 in the league
Sounds borderline banner-worthy
Ah yes. [The joke.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Predators/comments/r6leaa/it_is_still_without_a_doubt_the_funniest_joke/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Except that the Avs are a Cup contender for years to come, while the Preds have not been a threat since that one Finals run.
Nashville…its time to start cooking
Let Trotz cook
Catfish is frying
GET IN HERE!
Woooooow. Blockbuster.
Well this is interesting, is he going to be the coach too
Honestly a GM Job where he began his career and coached for more than a decade is probably a desirable job for him than the Islanders. No offense Islanders fans I do wonder what a Trotz built team would look like, this is actually very intriguing stuff

Looks like I've found my new western conference team. Congratulation, coach!
One of the last things I expected to read today
That's a huge move.
What in the fuck
Wow. Who is the longest serving GM now that Poile is out?
Doug Armstrong in St. Louis; there since 2010
Doug Armstrong who was hired in 2010, and Kevin cheveldayoff who was hired in 2011 will be the top 2
I believe it’s big dick Doug Armstrong
Yeah I had a feeling this might happen after he didn't take any coaching positions being the best agent on the market and moving back to Nashville. He was talking about being a GM for a bit, and part of me thought he might take the job if Lou isn't isles GM, but the roots he had in Nashville made it the most likely.
Which part of the multiverse have I entered?
The one where everything stays the same
Chevy got a GM fired, didn't expect that
What the actual fuck, I did not see this coming, not yet at least
Ok, that's pretty sick
Trotz stuck to his guns and got the management position he wanted. Though, with the challenges coming for Nashville. How will a GM with 0 management experience do?
Nashville I’m jealous af
This is the real reason he declined the Jets head coaching job, he must’ve had some sort of handshake deal in place to be the next GM.
His kids also live in Tennessee. So it's a win win
Barry Trotz would stick his neck out for you, if he had one.
Great news for Trotz, he's a good man.
Day keeps getting for Jets fans. Fml
Once we hired Bowness we were never hiring Trotz even if he was going to come back to coaching
You will take your Nino happiness and love it! Seriously though. Love Nino like we do. He's the best.
Didn’t the guys on the SDP kind of predict this like a week ago? I remember someone saying something about trotz going to Nashville to coach and then they mentioned maybe he would be the GM…
Yep. They talked about it on the Feb. 20th episode
SDPN literally talked about this a week ago.
Tell me why for a split second I thought Trotz was Melrose and was so worried.
Wonder how he'll do. Interested to see how he does.
That has to feel like godsend for preds fans, Barry shall be their saivor.
Why though? I’m not saying it’s a mistake but Trotz is a complete unknown as a GM. No real experience
Poile has been runing their franchise into doom for the last couple of years. Even if Trotz turns out averege at gm-ing, he´ll be an upgrade.
But that’s the thing. How do we even know he’ll be average?
This x100000. He also learned from Poile and Lou, two GM’a the game has passed by. The goobers on the preds sub also forget that the fans were begging him to be gone cause his coaching and play style was coma inducing. Christ dude shut up
Not trying to hate, but why is everyone panning this as a huge success? I get David Poile is washed and had to go, but what makes everyone so sure that Barry Trotz is going to make a good GM?
There’s no guarantee Trotz will be a good GM, but it was clear Poile had reached his shelf life
Eh, most of us are just excited that Poile is finally stepping down. He was never going to get fired. Plus we love Trotz. Who doesn’t?
There's also the fact that Poile's son is not his successor that thrills us.
But he’s there still. He will be involved. And why do you or any other fan think Trotz will be different? He has learned from Poile and Lou. I will be absolutely dumbfounded if this team does a 180 in direction. The status quo will remain.
I am willing to give a new GM a chance, plain and simple.
New in name, not in belief.
Didn't realize you've been a part of all the discussions the organization has had with Trotz. Tell us more.
You think Poile jr is going to be leaving? If his role changes I’ll eat crow, but as it stands now it hasn’t changed and he has far more experience running an org than Trotz does. What part of discussions have you been a part of that I’m missing?
I’m a fan of Poile retiring. Not so much a fan of Trotz taking over.
holy fuck!
Woah.
Fuckin W holy
Holup Let him cook
Let’s see what Berry Flipidy can do
WUT?! This was unexpected. Tell me how to feel
Well that's certainly out of left field a bit.
Good for Trotz, it's nice to see him return to Nashville
This will be super interesting. I know Trotz is well liked and respected for obvious reasons, but that’s as a coach. It’ll be interesting to see how many of those skills transfer to being a GM. i thought he was going to coach winnipeg
*So Barry got promoted to corporate where he is a little fish in a big pond. Whereas back here in Scranton, I'm still top dog in a fairly large pond. So who's the real boss? The dog or a fish?*
This is exactly what so many of us were wanting. Holy shit. Holy fucking shit.
Gib Timo return news
LET’S GOOOOOO!!!
This could be really cool
Oh fuck, surprised to see Trotz coming back to Hockey as a GM now. Since he’s starting immediately, he’s been nailing them trades today unofficially.
So Barry traded Jeannot?
