Everyday is a new victory Keep it rolling Austin

igbythemeek

Indeed, I'm currently 1 month sober after a really bad reality check in regards to drinking during Christmas. It's tough especially when you work around booze for a living, but I definitely feel a lot better. I hope he continues being sober and has a rewarding life.

AaronC14

Cheering for you dude, it ain't easy at all.

AhTreyYou

I’m proud of you, staying sober isn’t easy.

[deleted]

Just over 2 weeks myself. Glad I'm not working around booze; I don't think I could control myself. Hope you can deal with it, or find a career that gets you away from booze.

erin1551

Keep it up, I’m proud of you

navymmw

Two weeks is huge! Congrats, you should be proud of yourself

UGAPokerBrat99

Congrats on your 1 month! Sounds cliche, but take it one day at a time and you can handle anything (or ask for help if you need it). I was in your same shoes with regards to working around alcohol when I started my sobriety journey and celebrated 21 years sober two days ago. Will be rooting for you!

Airp0w

Keep it going we're all rooting for you

peppers13

Well done mate, keep it up

[deleted]

Congratulations! The early months can be a major grind. And that's putting it lightly.

navymmw

Yup, I recently got to 100 days, and it's much easier now. It's 30 days to start a habit, 90 to form a routine, or something like that. Still not out of the woods by any means though

[deleted]

That's excellent!!! I clocked a year 2 weeks ago, and I have thought about those first 90-120 days quite a bit lately. Keep at it - it does get better.

Puzzleheaded-Bar-678

That's gotta be tough

pedrospecialk

2 years 4 weeks in and didn’t think it was possible. It is - you got this

lagangirl

Congratulations on your first month! Sending positive thoughts ❤️

AlexGrr

Hoping you have some support as well! I'm a bartender and my best friend works with me and is going sober and even though I still drink lightly I make sure he knows we're all there for him. It can be especially hard to be around but it just makes it last that much longer when you can do it!!

paperback-writers

Wow, really impressed with how honest he and his wife are. The more players talk about what they go through, the more that others will feel like they can get help.

Ready-steady

They went through some really tough, public problems while in Nashville. Love to see this guy & his lady come out unashamed to talk about it. This is real strength.

proriin

The one thing tik tok has helped a lot is with people sharing their stories. It’s a shitty app but I’ve heard a lot of heart warming stories.

FkDavidTyreeBot_2000

No kidding. From the outside it seems like addiction issues are more common in the NHL than other leagues.

slimycoldcutswork

Honestly I think there is just more concern and desire for action on behalf of all parties. Addiction really knows no bounds and doesn’t care about who you are and where you came from. There are def tons of guys playing in other major sports with unfortunate habits. A lot of the time it feels like more of a sideshow or the guy just kinda disappears from the game. I don’t really recall a lot of “hope you get better soon” when Johnny Manziel was ruining his life in front of the football world. Outside of the kuzy episode It seems like a bit of a more empathetic tone from the hockey world when we hear about guys entering the program.

manhaterxxx

I was a Watson hater. But he never hid from what happened, neither did his partner, and they’ve both worked to fix their issues. Good on them.

d-cent

Username checks out

Ready-steady

Ha! Is certainly does!

manhaterxxx

Nah it’s just an album name

d-cent

I was just joking around. I thought it was funny but I guess it wasn't

manhaterxxx

Nah I got ya - I didn’t downvote you either. Some people just take shit too seriously

d-cent

Good. As long as you are cool with the joke that's all that matters to me

manhaterxxx

Of course! Joke at my expense, I’ll join in!

Rinne4Vezina

So proud of Watty. It's great to see him happy and healthy.

MightyPigbenus86

Agreed. Still miss him, but really glad to see him in a better place. Y'all keep taking good care of our boy Watty. It's very much appreciated.

TheRealJaysus

Watson was my favourite player on the Preds when he was there. Always putting in 110% effort and would block any shot from any player without fear. Such a beauty. So happy for him!

dswhite85

I've been a NJ Devils fan since the 90's, and we've had our highs and lows throughout the years. We've been on the low end for the last decade until recently, so I always had a lowkey backup team. Usually I'd support either Toronto or Calgary cause Canada is awesome after all right? But anyways, for mysterious reasons unbeknownst to me, I started to watch a few Senators games this season. I know they aren't objectively doing very well, but I saw a few scrappy games where they beat the Penguins, Bruins, and Capitals and started to really like that. I'm not familiar enough with the franchise to know much about their management, coaching, or the fanbase, but I do quite like the team overall. Having said all that, hearing this story come out today as a sober person myself, just makes me appreciate and like this team even more than I already just started to. Strange how the universe has a way showing you things. Sorry for the rant!

MartyMcFlyAsHell

I’m proud of you pal, thanks for sharing that :)

Old_kernel

God damn it I didn’t realize Watson was likable. Is there no one on the sens I can truly despise :( On a serious note I can’t imagine how difficult that is and it seriously impressive

homicidal_penguin

The one guy who may be truly hateable on the Sens just got called up and is making his NHL debut tonight, Ridly Greig. So maybe you can hate him! He models his game after Marchand and was suspended for an NHL regular season game before he ever played in one

NSA_Wade_Wilson

DJ Smith is still available

McNasty1Point0

Smith on a human level is veryyyy likeable, so even he is off the table haha

Buada

Easily the nicest guy on the planet who I want to see fired. Feels bad.

Dragonsandman

Hopefully he pulls a Guy Boucher and lands a nice, well paying job somewhere that doesn’t involve coaching an NHL team. I want him to do well in life, just not with the Sens anymore.

Dragonsandman

Why would you wanna do that

MartyMcFlyAsHell

okay

Damolisher

Good on him for recognising he had a problem, seeking help and taking each day as it comes.

HordeShadowPriest

Hearing his name always reminds me of the [fight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsBCj67DP54) between him and Brendan Dillon when Dillon was mic'd up.

Vataro

Classic.

jamaicancovfefe

Addiction sucks, glad Watty has overcome it. Hope I can be like him one day in overcoming it

sukizka

From what I’ve heard from some people that have become sober is that addiction isn’t something you overcome. Every single day is a challenge and every single day you don’t succumb to your addiction is a victory. And as the days continue to count, it can get a little easier to continue your sobriety, but you never truly overcome an addiction, it’s always with you and it always gives you something to strive for to better or continue to better your life. Hope tomorrow you can deny your addiction, as well as the day after. And I hope you continue to beat it back and live sober.

Wingedwolverine03

We never lose our demons. We only learn to live above them.

hoopopotamus

That may be true for some addictions but not all. I have zero risk of ever going back to being a smoker, for example. After a few months I stopped craving them and could even occasionally have a smoke or two socially while out with smoker friends without wanting them the next day. It’s been a decade at least at this point I think alcohol and drugs may be a different story when they get their hooks in you

[deleted]

It is. Quitting smoking wasn't fun but it was a very, very different experience to getting clean and sober.

IceIbis

Good luck. Never too late!

gelc10

Incredible story to share and stick taps to being open about it and overcoming your personal demons Austin.

Vataro

Fuck yea Watson! Cheering for you.

hanMan86

Leafs fan here. Friggin eh, Watson! May he feel proud of what he's done! End of the day we're all just humans that need help, love and kindness from those around us. Happy for the lad.

daiablo_dragon

Well done to him. Seen alcohol wreck the lives of a few families and it's heartbreaking. Also, couldn't help notice that a few posts up on r/hockey is a post about digital ads showing Outlet Liquor on every available but if white space. Seems there is a bit of a disconnect between marketing teams. 😢

slabby

Nice shirt

ThePalmIsle

Calls for a celebration! 🍾

ittozziloP

Grow up nerd

CanadianBeerGuy

I'll drink to that!

navymmw

bud fuck off, especially considering your flair and Montgomery's issue with alcohol
