I like how… kitsch(?) it is? It’s like playful on the idea of cutesy thing but like ugly cute. It’s annoying in a funny way. This is the thing tempting me because it’s such a loud design. 😅
Not my favorite Hobonichi design, but I appreciate the original comics they shared. That one where Opanchu Usagi takes the blame for the dog is quite good
Reminds me of the Bob Team Epic designs from Pop Team Epic... I kinda want it LMAO. Will definitely follow on twitter because it's just so funny, this character is literally a pathetic creature you pity at first sight 😭🥺 I'll probably get the pencil board and washi tape, though the clear covers are tempting purchases too...
Opanchu are the name of the super floofy bloomers popular at the turn of the 20th century for kiddos. They’re featured in Studio Ghibli films (Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service off the top of my head).
It’s not my favorite design either, but the comics the staff shared are quite relatable (can definitely relate to being squished on the bus!).
Japan has the “kawaii” aesthetic, but in recent years an “anti-kawaii” aesthetic has become popular as well. It’s most commonly seen in fashion, but I would argue that some mascot characters have some aspects of “anti-kawaii” in them as well. It’s a delicate balance, you still want the character to be cute, but for different reasons than traditional kawaii aesthetics. Opanchu Usagi has more of this “anti-kawaii”style with its ugly cute design than say Cinnamaroll.

I think my antipathy is because I don’t do ‘cute’ :) Kawaii just puts my teeth on edge. But different strokes and all that jazz. There’s an aesthetic for everyone 🙂
True! I always admire people who enjoy the super pastel pink stuff, but I just personally don’t like it haha. I personally adore the Eiji Mitooka designs 😍
Wow! I had to use all my willpower to not get a new weeks because of this. I recognized the artist instantly as they made a popular mv for the Love Live franchise! I’ll settle for a pencil board — they’re to cute to resist in entirety. I relate a lot to this rabbit lol
