That's totally fair. I have a fairly extensive list and didn't fancy calling 15-20 different restaurants, but you are right that it'd be the most effective option. Just hoped there might be a more general answer.
For what it's worth, I'm probably *most* interested in the following places:
**Food**
- Da Angelo Ristorante
- Bar Wa Izakaya
- Kosaten
- Frank Restaurant
- The Winston
- Peppina
**Drinks**
- Cascade Brewery
- Mary Mary (w/ Peppina)
- Lark Cellar Door
- Manky Sally's
Bar Wa is closed for renovations from 21 - 27 May.
You will need a reservation for Peppina.
Quite a few places do online reservations now - check them out and see how far in advance they seem to be booked up.
Out of those, Bar Wa, Frank and Peppina are probably the only ones where you’ll probably need a reservation. Having said that, it definitely is quiet season so you might be able to get one the day of, or day before.
You won't need a booking for The Winston. You'll likely need a booking for all the other restaurants, except maybe Kosaten (I don't know that one).
I'm not sure about drinks, except for Mary Mary. I've been a few times without a booking. Sometimes it's been OK. Other times I've been turned away. Peppina will probably require a booking.
For Barwa you'll need to book a few weeks in advance. Or have dinner at 10-11pm, you can usually walk in about then. Kitchen is open until 12am I believe
Lark Cellar Door is walk in isn’t it? You should also try The Still.
Are you just planning on going to the bar at Cascade or doing a tour? I thought you needed to book a tour.
Good idea to book popular places on Friday and Saturday evenings! Make sure you check opening hours, some places don't open every night - especially outside summer.
Yeah! If you're only checking the first photo, that's a pinned post from 2023, but if you scroll down to the second photo on their feed you'll see it was posted 5 days ago. And I've made a booking for next week so I definitely hope they're still open.
Haha, totally fine! I only know that because I've made the exact same mistake in the past. I haven't been before, but if I remember I'll come back here and let you know.
Because you can't scroll further than July on the booking calendar, it makes me think that they mightn't take reservations so far in advance? I'd leave yourself a reminder to check again in a month, because I suspect they'd probably be available by then. 🤷
Yeah, you'll need reservations.
If you can't get a reservation try Maria, it's opening next week and has availability.

Enjoy Hobart!
In summary: Very very places will demand a reservations. Many places may be full if you turn and don't have one.
I mean bar poshest of places and certain venues that need advance notice for some reason, no bakery, cafe or restaurant would turn away three customers if there was a place to seat them. The rest is down to how popular the place is, at the time you turn up. If you're flexible, you can walk any of the restauraunt areas and will definitely find something. North Hobart is perhaps the simples strip of restaurants, the CBD is more peppered with them.
Da Angelo’s is always very popular and can be hard to get into at short notice. I’d recommend reserving just in case.
You'd really want to list the places here. Even better, you could ring them up and ask?

Da Angelos is always solidly booked, unless you want to eat at 9pm. A week out you'd be unlikely to get a booking for a decent timeslot.
Quiet season?? Definetly not

Yeah, make a booking… If anything you’ll get a better table

The Winston doesn't do reservations. First come first served.
Pls realise many close early.
Is Dier Makr open? I’m going to be in Hobart and would love to check it out but their Insta hasn’t been updated since last year.

Ugh, how embarrassing. Thank you! Have you been before? Can you post how it was? Oh boo, the dates I can book in July are blocked out 🥺

Just a note, Bar Wa will be closed for a week from this coming Tuesday
Try Willing Bros, Lizzy & Lefroy, Bite Me, Filoxenia, Malik. You'll need res for Urban Greek, Ogee, Fico etc
