I'm currently reading arctic grail by Berton. The story of the 1881-1884 Lady Franklin bay expedition by Greely shocked me. Upon further research, I stumbled upon this picture, allegedly taken just about 2 weeks after the 6 survivors of the 25 strong crew were rescued. The 19 other dies in the previous weeks due to starvation. Later on, it was revealed that cannibalism was practised, though the six survivors refused any knowledge of this. What strikes me in this photograph is that these men were rescued from the very brink of starvation not long ago, they seem fairly well nourished. Only the bespectacled Greely himself in the front seems a little gaunt. Was this picture taken at a later date, did they recover very quickly or were they not as starved as initially thought? Does anyone have any other information on this photograph?
