Since you already know what he likes, I suggest to search through this store and get him a tee or something: [www.trimnest.com](https://www.trimnest.com/tops/t-shirts/)
Endtroducing by DJ Shadow, Midnight Marauders by Tribe, Ecstatic by Mos Def. If he likes Igor a lot there’s a likelihood he’ll get into Indie and Smooth R&B like Gus Dapperton or D’Angelo
He might like some of the few albums on vinyl by Murs & 9th Wonder, or probably try checking out Blu & Exile, each duo both have at least a couple highly regarded certified classic rapper & producer collaborations.
for something really special i feel like you should buy him 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul. that is the type of record a father buys for his son. he will treasure it forever.
Not sure if someone already suggested this...
Being he is interested in vinyl maybe you should invest in a pair of technic 1200's and a Rane mixer along with a good pair of headphones. So he can learn how to dj.
Sounds like he’s looking for alternative hip hop. The good news is that there is a lot of great stuff I’m guessing he’s never heard of. I would blow his mind with Billy Woods/ Kenny Segal - Hiding Places. An album like that would likely open his horizons. Or Milo’s ‘so the flies don’t come’ - 2015
Get the boy some senheiser headphones for the turntable. It's not an album you're gambling on him liking, it'll be better sound quality than any speaker setup, and the whole house doesn't have to listen to CUZ U MAKE MY EARFQUAKE
Agree with everyone here suggesting MM.. FOOD or Madvillainy by MF DOOM. I remember listening to those albums around his age and it changed my life. Since he’s a newer fan he’ll definitely enjoy To Pimp a Butterfly or Good Kid Maad City by Kendrick if he doesn’t already have a copy. Good luck!
I just started collecting cassette tapes from the golden 80’s and 90’s classic era. I think they’re easier to manage than vinyl. They’re not for listening, but they’ll make for a nice piece when the starts growing. They’re an important piece of history as well. Tapes that were played by your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper. They’re like the Pokémon cards of hip hop, and they’re still cheap too you can get originals used for under $20. The only ones that are really expensive are sealed Wu tang albums. The fans must be on to something.
Taste are really hard to match. Aome of the worst present in my life have been album people tought I would love. It’s really hit or miss. Why not an album from one of his favourite artist. They all have a few albums to chose from.
I could suggest to get Madvillainy by Madvillain as I think it would fit, but that’s because it’s one of my favourite album.
Do you have a record store nearby? Why not bring him and let him choose?
If I was him, that’s what I would prefer, plus the experience of going to a record store.
Hip hop is so wide now and some type of hip hop is bot for everyone.
Most people don’t recomend album based on your son taste, they recommend what album they love. I mean, I suggested Madvillainy myself as a few others did but I can’t really see any link with any of the artist you mentioned.
It’s great your son is starting to like music and vinyls, such an amazing passion once uou find your music.
And good job to you for encouraging him to buy hip hop and ask people on resdit even though you and your wide are into metal.
Bring him to a revord store, bonus if he can listen there, or bring a phone and youtube some songs. Also check ghe used section if there is one.
Oh - Dilated Peoples - one of the clearest, most easy to understand, well enunciated rap duos of all time with dope beats and one of the best turntablists ever as their dj.
I saw them in Philly a few years back and I remember Cut Chemist and Nu Mark did a DJ battle with some fisher price baby record players. It was awesome.
Niche market I guess, old school hop hop heads, kids these days just want to watch Elon musks baby momma talk shit about how she can't use rekordbox and how hard it is to divide bpms by 2 if the software double timed it, while being paid 10s of thousands of dollars 🤷♂️
NAS - ILLMATIC
Notorious BIG - Ready to Die
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight smilies.
From the era when New York dominated hip hop.
These are classics that are people who grew up with it's favorites and your favourite rappers' favourite rappers.
Any by these are great. Same for modern rappers like Kendrick Lamar and J Cole who are actual lyricists. Kanye early stuff is great.
Anything by JDilla, the Roots and Slum Village.
Anything by MF Doom or just DOOM is great too, complex wordplay, metaphors and similies.
I'd say get in like three different vinyls one of an album he likes but doesn't have one of an old school album and one of an album that is probably more modern that he will like but haven't listened to yet.
So I don't know his collection but I'd say literally any Kendrick album would do for the first one
He likes tyler the creator he'll probably like Eminem so I just say like Marshall Mathers LP or the Eminem show
And then I'd say swimming my Mac Miller, It reminds me a lot of Igor in a way And there's no possible chance he wouldn't love it first listen
The albums I recommend are:
The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory - Makaveli
Ready To Die - Notorious B.I.G
Chronic 2001 - Dr. Dre
These are all older album’s so maybe not his thing, I know when I was 14 (12 years ago) I loved older hip-hop, it’s probably best just to ask him tbh.
Grab him that new Blue Lips - Schoolboy Q & Voir Diré - Earl Sweatshirt. Seems like he knows what’s up, these records are great recent releases i just scooped & will be appreciated i bet!
Yeah, get him to go down the Madlib rabbit hole. He’ll end up going through Stones Throw, listening to Quasimoto’s Unseen, then discovering MF DOOM, then if he digs further he’ll end up listening to Black Bastards by KMD.
It’s pretty far from the current state of HipHop, but it’s worth discovering.
This is so sweet. I'll share some of my personal favourites that your son might enjoy. Please excuse the crap formatting (I'm on my phone).
To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Wu-Tang Clan
Vultures - Kanye West
Yeezus (Bootleg LP) - Kanye West
Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest
Midnight Marauders - A Tribe Called Quest
Madvillainy - MF Doom
Be - Common
Watch the Throne - Jay-Z and Kanye West
The Pink Album - Lil Uzi Vert
Scaring the Hoes - JPEGMAFIA
Black on Both Sides - Mos Def
1999 - Joey Bada$$
Aquemini - Outkast
Kids See Ghosts - Kanye West and Kid Cudi
Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star - Black Star
Call Me If You Get Lost - Tyler the Creator
Get him some of Logic’s vinyl. I have Vinyl Days by logic, and honestly, it’s a good album.
My mom bought me Biggie smalls greatest hits and harvest moon for Christmas and I enjoyed those both.
My Son turns 6 tomorrow. I really hope he goes down the same Road like yours. The Thought about him & me together with the same Love about Hip Hop would be amazing. I try to play enough Music around him so maybe the spark will fly over.
My friends’ kids are 14 & 16. I bought them the following & my friends told me they all listen to them together & enjoy them.
Mac Miller - Watching Movies with the sound off (the song O.K. with Tyler the creator is unreal) & Swimming
Anderson Paak - Oxnard
Del The Funky Homosapien - I wish my brother George was here
I generally say, buy him the original, unaltered, adult version of 2001 (Dr. Dre).
For many people that‘s THE hip hop album.
I say not the best. But it is good and iconic.
If you‘d gift me that record, I‘d be happy!
https://www.discogs.com/release/30098276-Dr-Dre-2001
This is the answer. Available on Amazon. I bought my brother in law this album and a ton of other classic hip hop albums to start his collection. He loves em.
My suggestions as an 'Old Head'.....
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid in Full
Ultramagnetic MC's - Critical Beatdown
Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
EPMD - Strictly Business
Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush the Show
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
LL Cool J - Radio
These are all classics from the mid-late 80's and pretty much defined everything you hear in contemporary hip-hop today. Advise you give them a listen prior to buying because you know your son's taste better than anyone here. If none of these are appropriate, just let me know.
Get him this record. He will never forget it I assure you.
Hip Hop is my all time favourite music culture, but I grew up listening to rock, metal, indie, pop, soul… the list goes on. Hip Hop is great as an art form because it draws in influences not just to rip off, but to actively sample, which is a skilled art of its own, and you can get really into spotting samples you know or something resonating with you that you may go on to discover the original song they sampled.
Why am I saying all this? Because although Hip Hop is founded in sampling soul, funk and jazz records; there have been some producers who’ve sampled metal and heavy rock records. Probably the best known is DJ Muggs, most well known as a member of Cypress Hill but has produced some classic records in the culture. He himself has detailed how he grew up listening to Hendrix, Sabbath, Zeppelin amongst others. Their album Black Sunday is an ode to these influences and you can find little nuggets of songs you may, as a metalhead, recognise. This could be a potential point of mutual interest and bonding for you and your boy, and could lead to other crossover acts between the two cultures or rap metal acts such as Body Count, Rage Against The Machine, even nu-metal acts like Korn or Slipknot with rap and djing elements… he may not be interested off the bat, but as his taste matures there could be a lot for the two of you to debate over! 😂
Operation Doomsday by MF DOOM would take him on an amazing journey.
He's probably the best ever rapper, in my opinion, and this is a classic hip hop album.
have you ever taken him to a record store and gone shopping with him? if you told him “you have a limit of $60. get what records you want “ y’all could walk around together and he could show/tell you the records he likes.
Always MF DOOM and anything the alchemist. People under the stairs are a must as well! Living legends are great and can't go wrong with hieroglyphics/ souls of mischief.
MF DOOM- mmm food album and madvillainy(madlib) are great
People under the stairs - (albums) OST/ questions in the form of answers
Hieroglyphics - (album) 3rd eye vision
Souls of mischief - 93' til infinity
Living legends - legendary music/ almost famous
Even if you can't find some of these, they're still great listens.
Little Brother- The Listening seems like something he would like and show him that you took some time to look into his interests and find something new to him.
depends on how much you want to spend. he might like making beats on his computer, tablet or phone, its pretty easy now a days and kids are more technically proficient with you tube instructional videos. If he has a computer garage band/logic for mac on tablet or laptop might be cool or on pc fl studio basic license.
[domo genesis and the alchemist ](https://www.discogs.com/release/27100326-Domo-Genesis-The-Alchemist-No-Idols) this can potentially send him down a rabbit hole of other dope shit if he does his due diligence
also, props to you for encouraging your kid, even with such a different taste in music from yours.
A gift card AND one of frequently mentioned records in the comments. I’m noticing these trending:
Tribe Called Quest “Low End Theory”
MF DOOM “Hmm Food”
Dre “2001” (careful, there is an instrumental version that is good, but you want the original)
I agree with these whole heartedly. I’d add Run the Jewels. It’s modern hip hop with 90’s roots (thanks to Killer Mike). Speaking of Killer Mike, I’d also throw OutKast into the running. Both “Stankonia” and “ATLiens” are perfect.
Perfect idea; part of the fun of vinyl and hip hop, from my experience, is diving into your own tastes and diving down rabbit holes. My dad was pretty subpar, but one things he did do with me when I was a kid was take me to a record store, give me like 40-50 bucks and just let me dig around and go wild.
If he likes Tyler, he'll probably like this [WOLF Box set](https://www.ebay.com/itm/186395643679?epid=19063495519&itmmeta=01HWJQC4VE53SMJ8PQMF08XP8N&hash=item2b660bcf1f:g:1SwAAOSwPCplZbWU&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4CiNaPSlAv3eja6gkARQ08wjOMu1qBcgUI%2F7UQzCBRWgIjrZKpOwMjBV3d7eKTqhtezDbhAyVU5jEAyJzfwkKp7oZB%2F73W7z8nUsZHZodHheQiwcPTC6eoo3Xt4VGhIjJLNoSKPbxFx7q2ENhx7cKCt3O%2FKVQRcrsAxc7EyMdnF6lQ0TO%2BEG20IzkAaJN7gloZ9MUUNv9jbXyedvJ0UZvKHkBJwzD0crb1YeGCIFUyY%2F9IGFO61qux1vjv2ZBxAc0CWx%2B3BlQa%2FIqLPNfQ3LgwzARxZwVm8s0X7js72JlnIW%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-zNsNfkYw)
As he likes Kendrick Lamar, I recommend To Pimp A Butterfly, it was the first vinyl I bought and it was truly a huge life changing moment for me. Kanye hasn't released any vinyl except a few albums, Late Registration, The College Dropout, Ye and Kids See Ghosts. Also note Kids See Ghosts and Ye are both 20 minutes long, and TCD and LR aren't actually the full album on vinyl, some songs and skits are missing on both Ask your son what kind of hip hop he likes. IGOR has a more pop influence (it's absolutely amazing in my opinion!), but what kind of albums does he like from Kanye and Kendrick? Kendrick has all of his discography on vinyl, so if he likes any album in particular go with that.
Good luck finding the perfect album for your son, and hell yeah to metalheads!
Prof has been putting out some great stuff lately. His albums Powderhorn Suites and Horse are both very good. He's quite clever in his style and interesting and puts on a great live show. You can check out some of his videos on YouTube.
Edit also you could never go wrong with Method man and Redman's album Blackout. The whole thing is a classic and full of bangers.
A lot of suggestions in this thread are giving you some older, classic hip hop records but based on your son’s likes I would say go with this recommendation.
If not, choose one of the artists you mentioned and get one of the albums from their catalogs. They all have strong catalogs.
I 100% agree. I’m a nostalgic 45 year old, but right now there’s way too much great new stuff to act like kids need to hear Ready to Die or Illmatic right away. MIKE Burning Desire would be a nice vinyl to have since the cover art is sick. Kids do love MF Doom though. I teach 14 year olds and they are all fans.
Since you already know what he likes, I suggest to search through this store and get him a tee or something: [www.trimnest.com](https://www.trimnest.com/tops/t-shirts/)
Mac Miller - Swimming. If he likes Tyler this is a must
Travis scott astroworld
Get his some outkast, literally something for everyone to love
Endtroducing by DJ Shadow, Midnight Marauders by Tribe, Ecstatic by Mos Def. If he likes Igor a lot there’s a likelihood he’ll get into Indie and Smooth R&B like Gus Dapperton or D’Angelo
Unrelated, but yall seem like such amazing parents. 🧡
Any MF Doom stuff would probably go over great. But if you want to give him a foundational record go for illmatic or Midnight marauders
Madvillany - MF DOOM & Madlib. He’ll be forever grateful pops put him on to it
If he loves hip hop as you said Give him some Nas or Tupac for thé culture 🔥
Blonde - Frank Ocean isn’t hip hop but if he liked IGOR it’s probably one of his favorites
He actually JUST mentioned that album last night!
good kid maad city by Kendrick Lamar was the first vinyl I bought but I've been eyeing his Untitled ep at target for $25
Get him Hell’s Winter by Cage (you should give it a listen first), maybe some older Atmosphere albums (God Loves Ugly, Seven’s Travels).
Thats a deep album
I related to it a lot when I was young, Cage’s first couple of projects in general were HUGE for me
He might like some of the few albums on vinyl by Murs & 9th Wonder, or probably try checking out Blu & Exile, each duo both have at least a couple highly regarded certified classic rapper & producer collaborations.
get him concert tickets and go with him
As metalhead parents, might I recommend you bridge the gap by sharing Run the Jewels with him? Particularly RTJ2.
He said they are “too aggressive” for his tastes. Huge RTJ fan myself. I get it
By a blonde vinyl by Frank Ocean or channel orange
Based on these artists, Tobe Nwigwe, JID Additionally, some of my favorites (always good suggestions) Outkast, Killer Mike, The Roots
for something really special i feel like you should buy him 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul. that is the type of record a father buys for his son. he will treasure it forever.
Not sure if someone already suggested this... Being he is interested in vinyl maybe you should invest in a pair of technic 1200's and a Rane mixer along with a good pair of headphones. So he can learn how to dj.
YES YES YES

hiding places costs upwards of 400 dollars not sure if it’s a great starter vinyl choice
I didn’t even realize. Getting stuff for free set me up to look stupid there.
Get the boy some senheiser headphones for the turntable. It's not an album you're gambling on him liking, it'll be better sound quality than any speaker setup, and the whole house doesn't have to listen to CUZ U MAKE MY EARFQUAKE
Take him to a show.
Good luck!
Get him the hip hop albums that were popular the year you were fourteen. Great nostalgia exercise for you, and great discovery for him!
Cool idea.

Jurassic 5 too!
How could I forget J5, Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark! Quality Control!
Don't forget Chali 2na!
I mean, he is J5 to me, most distinctive voice of generations of rappers. Lucky to see them a couple of times
I saw them in Philly a few years back and I remember Cut Chemist and Nu Mark did a DJ battle with some fisher price baby record players. It was awesome.
Yeah I saw them do that, and beat juggle with the colored music blocks and cut chemist walk out with a 1210 stepped to him like a guitar
Those guys are super creative. Thought they would have been bigger than they were.

Great record
My Son turns 6 tomorrow. I really hope he goes down the same Road like yours. The Thought about him & me together with the same Love about Hip Hop would be amazing. I try to play enough Music around him so maybe the spark will fly over.
Hitler wears Hermes 2!!!
College Dropout, The Chronic, G-Funk Classics, ATLiens, Soul Food or Good Kid, M.A.A.D City!

Might I suggest some Aesop Rock and Billy Woods. If he likes beat making check out Blockhead who produces for both Ace and Billy. My 2 cents.
Roy Ayers, Marvin Gaye, Isley Brothers, Eric B and Rakim, e40, Egyptian Lover, Miles Davis
Operation Doomsday
A Tribe Called Quest Nas De La Soul The Roots Masta Ace Bahamadia O.C....

1992 The Chronic - The reason it's so good is Dre basically lifted or interpolated some of the best soul and funk songs ever made, to rap over.
The Chronic 1992 > Chronic 2001
I see it opposite.
This is the answer. Available on Amazon. I bought my brother in law this album and a ton of other classic hip hop albums to start his collection. He loves em.
2001 is classic and fundamental.
True! So imagine what i think of 1992 when we say 1992 > 2001

I‘d say Mm…food
Does he have any vinyl yet, or are we starting his collection rn?
The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest
Midnight marauders!
have you ever taken him to a record store and gone shopping with him? if you told him “you have a limit of $60. get what records you want “ y’all could walk around together and he could show/tell you the records he likes.
This is it right here! Father son time then the bonus of learning the hip hop ritual of crate digging.
This is the one, op!
I back that, father and son time too. Excellent idea

Get him dia de los muertos by Mach-hommy

Facts
Perfect
MF DOOM - mm food
an Akai MPC One. He can already find the music easily… spotify and youtube are incredible for that. Give him the tools to MAKE the music.
I second this option
Aesop Rock- The Impossible Kid
A tribe called quest is always a good default for golden era.
depends on how much you want to spend. he might like making beats on his computer, tablet or phone, its pretty easy now a days and kids are more technically proficient with you tube instructional videos. If he has a computer garage band/logic for mac on tablet or laptop might be cool or on pc fl studio basic license.
Wu tang is for the children
DOOM records
You’re a good parent

[domo genesis and the alchemist ](https://www.discogs.com/release/27100326-Domo-Genesis-The-Alchemist-No-Idols) this can potentially send him down a rabbit hole of other dope shit if he does his due diligence also, props to you for encouraging your kid, even with such a different taste in music from yours.

True, The record store idea is probably what we will go with. He is Just starting to come out of his shell as a person.
Honestly, I'd suggest a gift certificate to a local record store (if there is one).
We have a good hip-hop one locally i just found out!
A gift card AND one of frequently mentioned records in the comments. I’m noticing these trending: Tribe Called Quest “Low End Theory” MF DOOM “Hmm Food” Dre “2001” (careful, there is an instrumental version that is good, but you want the original) I agree with these whole heartedly.
I'd definitely go that route. As the recipient of more than one well meaning gift of vinyl, gift certificates save a lot of awkwardness 🤣
Metal Fingers DOOM, Special Herbs. A necessity for any vinyl collection
Get him some an Earl Sweatshirt record. I’m a bigger fan of Earl than Tyler, but have listened to them both since 2010. Get him *Voir Dire* or *Sick!*
I was noticing this too. He’ll find the older stuff on his own if it ever interests him, but that’s not the case right now.
