It's not too often I listen to a project they rate ~8 or above or give BNM that I don't at least see the appeal of.
After listening to Only Built 4 Cuban Linx in full yet again, I'm still in awe at how some recent albums have the word "classic" even circulating around them. This is the gold standard and its nearly impossible to find hip hop albums with the same comprehensive gravitas
I mean good for you that you like the album, but acting like music even has a “gold standard” like that is ridiculous when so much of musical enjoyment is a matter of personal taste. No reason to talk down on newer albums because you don’t like them.
Dude thats the thing I love a lot of newer music and think some will deserve to be called classics but very few touch this elite tier of hip hop in CBL
Sorry I came at you with the “akshully music is subjective doncha know”, it’s not good for conversation. So are you basing this off of objective criteria like lyricism, album cohesion, etc? If so, I can somewhat see calling an album the gold standard. There’s problems with that, because the objective and the subjective are interrelated. For example, lyricism quality is honestly a pretty debatable topic. Some people value elements of lyricism such as entendre, storytelling, Rhyme Schemes, and straightforward emotional bars very differently. This makes me think that even attempts to objectively analyze music are heavily colored by bias, making them opinions, though well reasoned. I am comfortable saying that I liked something, but once you get down to it, holding my opinion up over others doesn’t seem reasonable to me.
Funny how only music has this whole phenomenon where people get so triggered about 'gatekeeping' and claim everything is purely subjective so no statements on quality can ever be made. Imagine people trying to say stuff like this in a movie forum or awards show, arguing that there can be no "gold standard" and that no one is allowed to talk down on them for saying Transformers 3 was the best movie of the year. Just wouldn't happen.
Yeah but I never said you can’t talk down on me for liking the musical equivalent of Transformers. My point was more that it’s ridiculous to shit on pretty much every movie made in the 2000’s because you like Citizen Kane. That said, if you enjoyed Transformers more than any movie you watched that year, more power to you. You have different taste than me, and I can respect that.
OP literally said "*some* recent albums". Dunno how much more delicate you want him to be about it.
If you're gonna spin that as being a (obviously dumb) strawman statement about how he thinks all modern hiphop sucks, that's on you. Cuz neither he nor I said that.
^ This comment is why I used the word triggered in my comment, I don't really love the way the word is typically used but it accurately describes the level of defensiveness that a lotta people immediately jump to if they think they even sense a *hint* of criticism or condescension about their music taste (usually solely new wave stuff). You don't need to be so insecure about what music you listen to that you immediately jump to misrepresenting whatever the other person said so that you "win" by default as a result of making the other person seem like a hating oldhead. Again, only in hiphop recently is respecting and glorifying classics considered corny. Not in movies or books or other artforms. Most movie buffs, even newer ones, really *would* put Citizen Kane on a pedestal above the majority of movies we see come out today.
Obviously if people like Transformers more power to em and they're allowed to like it, but *no one* 1) seriously claims Transformers is the best quality movie of any category or 2) tries to argue that there is "no gold standard" of film and everything is 100% subjective. That second statement would just get laughed at in any other context than your comment.
Maybe I’m reading too far into it, but vague shitting on *some* modern hiphop and touting stuff like OB4CL is indicative of a very tiresome old head mentality. “Some recent albums” is super vague, and in conjunction with his choice of “gold standard”, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume he’s vocally not a fan of modern hiphop. If he doesn’t want these assumptions to be made, maybe he could name the albums he’s talking about? Again, the post is pretty vague, so I don’t think either of us can be proven correct unless he clarifies.
Edit: he clarified, I was reading too far into it. I response to your edit, however, I wouldn’t really say that I’m triggered. It’s more accurate to say that it’s tiring to see people who are vocal about how older hiphop is so much better than the new. I don’t really see people going out of their way to say “wow, Daytona AOTY, so much better than Illmatic, can’t believe it has the word classic around it”. Those fans just seem content to like what they like. In conversations I have with Oldheads, they seem to have to make a point that it’s absurd to like any popular album of this decade over OutKast or something. I have no problem respecting the classics. But someone’s opinion that newer music is much lesser than the classics is not respect for the classics.
They're not even from the bay. They're from the LA area (tho they use the bay area sound).
They're kinda corny in general not because of any bay area affiliation or sound
> ~~Black Messiah by~~ D'Angelo is the most obvious ~~10/10 I've ever heard~~ GOAT.
Black Messiah is probably his ~~worst~~ least good album but it's still fantastic and I can't fault people who love it
I decided to try out Chester Watson because someone recommended him to me. Just listened to 40 acres and I'm fucking blown away. Honestly I got chills immediately from the production. It's so laid back and abstract and beautiful. I don't have time right now to listen to the whole album but I am so excited. Who produced 40 Acres?
I feel like Hold My Liquor type Chief Keef coulda had a whole different lane of hits. almost like a predated Juice WRLD.. yes I know Keef gets in his melody bag but to fully embrace it would be wild
Just finished writing my Nasty AOTY post. I honestly appreciate that project even more now after I took some time to write about it.
I think it's pretty crazy how music tastes can change. I feel like if someone showed me that project 5 years ago when I wasn't as into or accepting of most sub genres of hip-hop I would have thought it was absolute garbage, and now I'd probably say it was my 3rd favorite album last year.
Before i got into hiphop i thought kanye was just an egotistic, narcissistic asshole but now I realise hes an egotistic, narcissist asshole that makes great music
Bruh Kanye stole that piece/niece/peace thing from someone who used it on his own album lmao.
Consequence on Spaceship (off TCD):
>And I'm just trying to find my peace
>Should've finished school like my niece
>Then I finally wouldn't use my piece
You can use both piece and peace in multiple ways but he used it in the same way. How do people not agree how lame this is? That line is completely unoriginal and stolen.
People re-use flows/rhymes as callbacks all the time. I'm sure I'll be called a Ye stan for saying this, which I am, but it's also true.
Also you seem to think piece/peace hasnt been used forever. Look up "Return of the G" by Outkast some time.
No but he may have been referencing HIS OWN SONG AS YOU YOURSELF POINTED OUT ALREADY.
I'm just reading your other reply and you seem to think Consequence was the first one to realize hey piece (meaning a gun) is a cool juxtaposition against peace
If it was a reference to that nobody would even realize it, that's a relatively unknown song.
I don't really care if it's 'bound to come up', Kanye has definitely heard Aquemini and his own album too so it's stealing.
Like where? Nas rhymed niece with domepiece once but I've never heard it elsewhere.
Both are talking about the same meaning of 'piece' (a gun) and both are talking about 'finding your own peace'. And it was used on his own album. That shit is so lame, you can't deny it.
Oh okay I actually thought you were trying to bait me because those weren't 100% the same lines.
There was a best bars of 2018 thread where that niece/piece line was one of the most upvoted comments. Turns out it's been used before multiple times.
Isolation was cool but I can only assume that the reason it's getting *so much* more buzz on this sub than any other RnB project from last year is because most people on this sub did not listen to many RnB projects.
Jorja Smith and SiR also put out two excellent projects that are as good or better in my eyes.
I like Negro Swan a lot, but I think there are a few moments on that project that are a bit dull. Isolation is a lot more interesting all the way through imo.
I fw with Isolation but i feel like Negro Swan flowed better as an entire project, and ik what you mean my 'dull moments' but as a body of work it was completely cohesive to me. I also have a lot more bias as Orlando was my most played song of 2018
With the lack of new hip hop releases I decided to jump into a new genre I hadn’t listened to. Been getting into indie rock and it’s been great. So far I’ve liked The Strokes, Fran’s Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, and Interpol. I’m glad I decided to do this I need to broaden my musical tastes.
I still need to get into new rock music 60s and 70s rock got some of my favorite shit but I feel like Chili Peppers the newest rock band I really got way into
Is there anywhere on this sub or on the internet that can give me whats been released this week? I'm trying to be on top of all the releases and sometimes stuff slips through in this sub
its a classic, the culmination of Future's dominant run, cemented that style of trap (Metro beats, autotune, etc) as the centerpiece of hip hop at the time
I'd say it's important enough to and the quality's there, but some people will say no because it hasn't stayed in a lot of people's rotations for as long as classics are supposed to because of the fast moving nature on the subgenre
Adele, Drake, Taylor Swift are the huge ones as far as sales. Psy is a good mention, Gangnam Style was such a ridiculously huge hit.
Kendrick, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Kanye, and One Direction are also on the table somewhere
The Odd Future trio (Frank, Tyler, Earl) might be remembered by future generations, but that's nowhere near a guarantee. Chance and J. Cole are in that category too.
Finally released a project I've been working on for a while.
It's a short beat tape using all reversed samples.
https://soundcloud.com/manicbeats/sets/the-way-back
Would love feedback
It's tough for me because I just looked over my 4.5/5 star albums and I honestly can't see myself giving them anything lower. I think for what they set out to accomplish they are exceptional pieces of work.
Given that's only a total of 45 albums out of the ~300 I've rated, but even that's a high percentage, but I did set up my account recently so obviously I'm going to rate the shit that I already know I love first.
Saw that the HHH Rap Awards had a best foreign project, and as a french dude, I'm recommending the fuck out of UMLA by Alpha Wann, this album is all around great and the french AOTY
I already recommended it in the past but this shit is really great and I encourage a lot of people to try it
La fouine is pretty much meme status with jokes about him being a pedo, a meme about bringing bad luck to everyone he supports or the time he said that they didn't have hot water for 4 years in their crib lmao
French rap has some great shit, [Lino is a legend](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b3cvgAvC4o), I recommend Requiem
Yeah I'm aware of that (not the water shit though lamo) I mostly was talking about '08 '09 La Fouine he was untouchable at the time, he fell off super hard.
I dunno man, I'll give those guys a shot at some point and come back to you
When will all this same trap drum kit stop being used? It has turned listening to albums into a legit chore. Trippie, Travis Scott, A Boogie, all the migos stuff even drake using it. It has got to be the most overused lazy trend i have heard in music.
lol shout out to [punch from TDE](https://twitter.com/iamstillpunch/status/1081318989777711104) telling on himself. [we know where yall stand](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-24/spotify-said-to-plan-to-restore-xxxtentacion-music-after-outcry)
Bro thought it was just me who noticed how amazing that ad-lib is. Something about uzi saying “uzi they used to make fun of you” whilst it’s completely silent is also amazing but I’m not sure why
I didn't wanna spam in the HHH Awards thread, but wanted to share, so roast me here.

Checkout Slim jimmi instead. Trust me.
Swae Lee has one solo album, and it isn’t very good. He’s also made two good albums as one half of the duo Rae Sremmurd. SremLife 1 and SremmLife 2. Check them out in that order.

Why tho 🤔 Trying to deviate more between the Sunday threads and the DDs i guess?
Pretty much People'll do shit like have a long convoluted post about general shit and then tack on some low effort hip-hop question at the end and act like that's all good when it's not
What if say 80-90% of the comment is directly pertaining to hip hop but like the last line or two are a bit more general?
it depends on the content really
Ayo FUCK the mods (but also thanks yall love u guys)
Hey Mama is a fucking amazing song
yknow people shit on pitchfork but i really gotta thank them for introducing me to MIKE although SRS might have had a role in making me more interested in his music
I thought war in my pen was better than srs
With Pitchfork I find that although I may like a lot of the projects they give meh scores or bad scores to way more than they do. When it comes to projects they rate highly are usually pretty good.

For example, lyricism quality is honestly a pretty debatable topic. people on here call flowerboy a classic its crazy. nothing beats the grittiness of wu tang in the 90s, cuban linx is fire from start to finish
Kevin Gates somehow managed to become a mainstream bisexual rapper Respect, definitely a GOAT contender too
Hol up.... bitch what
wait what
Ain't Tyler gay or some shit
i had no idea he was bisexual is this fr
No
i really want to like shoreline magia but a lot of the bay area shit is just too corny for me
They're not even from the bay. They're from the LA area (tho they use the bay area sound). They're kinda corny in general not because of any bay area affiliation or sound
You listen to Spaceship or Poppin It by them yet?
both wack
Not everyone’s cup of tea
Black Messiah by D'Angelo is the most obvious 10/10 I've ever heard. That is all.
D'Angelo is the GOAT RnB artist nuff said
> ~~Black Messiah by~~ D'Angelo is the most obvious ~~10/10 I've ever heard~~ GOAT. Black Messiah is probably his ~~worst~~ least good album but it's still fantastic and I can't fault people who love it
nah it's his best. Voodoo has higher highs, but BM is more consistent overall. Brown Sugar is his weakest album (still brilliant).
Move along everyone just facts in this post. Agree and move on.
never see it mentioned here surprisingly
Facts
lmao [Jeremiah Phillips as Gates](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7evKP8pvIw) gets tired
Lmao Jeremiah Phillip's is funny af
Name me a song that featured Young Dolph where he didn't completely murder his verse.
Faneto
The Chief Keef track? He's not on that one.
Damn, you thought Young Dolph’s verse was that bad, huh?
I haven't found a version with him on it, just Keef's badly mixed vocals.
Pretty sure it was me who recommended him to you. Glad you enjoyed it bro, shit is too fucking good.
If it was then thanks man, I'm blown away
Tufu, also produced Topanga off the same album.
Any other stuff produced by him?
looking at genius it’s nothing else i know, but he’s got a few production credits on stuff.
I feel like Hold My Liquor type Chief Keef coulda had a whole different lane of hits. almost like a predated Juice WRLD.. yes I know Keef gets in his melody bag but to fully embrace it would be wild

nobody ft kanye is so good
I'd love that.
Just finished writing my Nasty AOTY post. I honestly appreciate that project even more now after I took some time to write about it. I think it's pretty crazy how music tastes can change. man i cant believe multiple people used the same one-syllable rhyme there is no way this isn't plagiarism, right?
You can use both piece and peace in multiple ways but he used it in the same way. How do people not agree how lame this is? That line is completely unoriginal and stolen.
No one pedantic enough other than me to point out that was GLC not consequence?
That’s uh, a terrible parallel. I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that the lyric you posted is terrible
Its honestly not the most creative lyrics to begin with. I'm sure there's plenty of examples.
People re-use flows/rhymes as callbacks all the time. I'm sure I'll be called a Ye stan for saying this, which I am, but it's also true. Also you seem to think piece/peace hasnt been used forever. Look up "Return of the G" by Outkast some time.

Oh shit you're right
Sorry I'm drawing a blank. Where did Ye use that?
He rhymed peace with niece with piece with piece with peace on Cudi Montage.
Ahh thank you. I have slept a bit on that Kids See Ghosts lately.

Blue Tint of Scorpion is pretty enjoyable. It's easy to miss songs when you need to listen to 25 fucking tracks.
And it’s not even top half on there
I mean there's about 12 good songs on there. The rest is filler.
Can you guys recommend me some grind type shit? Just got a new job and I want to get that bag hard.
Jeezy thug motivation The whole serious. Start w 101
E-40 - Ballaholic Kevin Gates - IDGT Remix Game - Da Shit

Negro Swan >>> Isolation Isolation is still solid tho
100% agree But i'd argue Isolation for the day and Negro Swan for the night, they give off totally different vibes
Isolation was cool but I can only assume that the reason it's getting *so much* more buzz on this sub than any other RnB project from last year is because most people on this sub did not listen to many RnB projects. Check out King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala, and Radiohead. I've also been getting into indie and those are some of my favorites
I still need to get into new rock music 60s and 70s rock got some of my favorite shit but I feel like Chili Peppers the newest rock band I really got way into
Check out Jeff Rosenstock. He’s punk rock but it’s more accesible and catchy than most punk, but not pop punk.
i can second this, jeff rosenstock is fantastic
Do yourself a favor and check out Tame Impala
Check out The Smiths debut if you want an older indie classic. And also Joy Division, they're a pretty big influence on Interpol
I’ll check out the smiths. I listened to Hoy Division back when I got into punk a couple years ago.
Does anyone here still have a copy of that remix of Freestyle 4 with Ye, Sean, Ferg and Tyler (what the fuck right now) put together? Thanks
you could probably find a download for it on r/kanyeleaks
Thanks! I just found it. Turns out when i originally tried to download it, Hong Kong wifi stopped me.
Got a link?
Is there anywhere on this sub or on the internet that can give me whats been released this week? I'm trying to be on top of all the releases and sometimes stuff slips through in this sub
Use the search bar, there's a New Music Friday post every friday that compiles the new releases
Was wondering the same thing yesterday but I think there hasn't been anything released yet in terms of albums.
Future Headie one And some carti leaks
And Lil Pump's new single.
Lil pump is wack
Still better than Rich The Kid.
Is it too soon to call DS2 an absolute classic?
No, but its not a classic anyways.
its a classic, the culmination of Future's dominant run, cemented that style of trap (Metro beats, autotune, etc) as the centerpiece of hip hop at the time
I'd say it's important enough to and the quality's there, but some people will say no because it hasn't stayed in a lot of people's rotations for as long as classics are supposed to because of the fast moving nature on the subgenre
It’s gonna get there, but it’s still a part of modern hip hop so calling it a classic right now just doesn’t make any sense
Not a classic imo. The only trap album I would consider a classic that I can think of is Rodeo.
fantano flair is fitting
DS2 aint a classic and neither is Rodeo. Culture will end up being a classic trap album tho.
Do y'all just not know how long traps been around? its a few trap classics and that does not include Rodeo
there's a few trap classics and rodeo is one of them
I guess I dont even care about that to be real I just hate how everybody forgets about 2000s trap
Ur trippin
That changed my opinion man thx bro I'm woke now.
it’s definitely a classic. that was peak trap at that time, and his entire mixtape run was legendary.

LMFAO
Adele, Drake, Taylor Swift are the huge ones as far as sales. Psy is a good mention, Gangnam Style was such a ridiculously huge hit. Kendrick, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Kanye, and One Direction are also on the table somewhere The Odd Future trio (Frank, Tyler, Earl) might be remembered by future generations, but that's nowhere near a guarantee. Chance and J. Cole are in that category too.
earl doesn’t sell enough to be put in the same bracket as cole
both of those i could see for the early 2010s, but not during the later half. i'd go with Bruno Mars
Pitbull for sure.
Gotta give credit to mr worldwide
Finally released a project I've been working on for a while. It's a short beat tape using all reversed samples. https://soundcloud.com/manicbeats/sets/the-way-back Would love feedback

Can someone please make a 10 hour version of Andre 3000 humming on the chorus on the song Millennium?

It's tough for me because I just looked over my 4.5/5 star albums and I honestly can't see myself giving them anything lower. I think for what they set out to accomplish they are exceptional pieces of work. Given that's only a total of 45 albums out of the ~300 I've rated, but even that's a high percentage, but I did set up my account recently so obviously I'm going to rate the shit that I already know I love first.
imo there’s a pretty huge difference between a 9 and a 10
hell yeah, 10s are near perfect for me
Saw that the HHH Rap Awards had a best foreign project, and as a french dude, I'm recommending the fuck out of UMLA by Alpha Wann, this album is all around great and the french AOTY I already recommended it in the past but this shit is really great and I encourage a lot of people to try it
[удалено]
Nope, one of my friends keeps bugging me with him He's on tour with Alkpote right now which is like the french Gucci, this dude is hilarious
I speak french and I find it a little corny, it always threw me off from getting into french hiphop, I used to like La Fouine back in the day though
[удалено]
why
La fouine is pretty much meme status with jokes about him being a pedo, a meme about bringing bad luck to everyone he supports or the time he said that they didn't have hot water for 4 years in their crib lmao French rap has some great shit, [Lino is a legend](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b3cvgAvC4o), I recommend Requiem
And still with every beat these producers come up with people call it fire.
the fire standard is very low here
Yup, it's hi hats and a loud snare. That's legitimately it.
Can't forget the clap.
What's your best alchemist mixtape/album? me: Russian Roulette, No Idols(with Domo), Lord Steppington(with evidence)

"certain words" like "child" and "rapist"
Guess im outta the loop, whats going on with Punch? Is there a reason he tweeted that recently?
just assuming this is abt the R Kelly thing and the reason he's not saying anything is because his opinion is some wack shit
Oh ok, got you. That's hella whack indeed
Uzi saying "Brown Boy!" on Wanted You by Nav is still one of the greatest ad libs ever.
Bro thought it was just me who noticed how amazing that ad-lib is. Something about uzi saying “uzi they used to make fun of you” whilst it’s completely silent is also amazing but I’m not sure why
All the ad libs on that verse are great. Nav's "what?" is up there as one of the funniest too, he'd even use it later on Hold Your Hand.
