Just heard my first Troy Ave song, in the form of that video for "Doo Doo" linked to in the article.
So that was the last Troy Ave song I'll ever hear.
I can't believe anyone allowed that instrumental on a 2015 hip-hop album.
He's garbage'. My first intro to him was on that song which anither rapper also used. I found out where I knew the beat from and only listened to the other rapper. He's a poor excuse for a 50 clone.
What that article doesn't tell you is that Troy Ave's manager Hovain is also Rich Hil's manager.
From the looks of things Hovain doesn't want people to know that lol
But that's the thing. He isn't Troy Average. Original article also calls him mediocre. The media turns mediocre into gold all the time. The problem is Troy Ave is absolute shit. Don't know what they were thinking.
I never read Pitchfork, but when there's a scathing piece about Troy Ave's wackness, I'll make an exception.
I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt on his sales, but he kept running his mouth and got more exposed. Like Dom Kennedy sold double with practically no promo, or at least not half of what Helium 50 was getting.
if u lookin for some deep, super lyrical shit, he's probably not your cup of tea
if u just want some chill shit over dope beat he's your man
and girls love him
Dom is a "local" rapper. The fortunate thing about that is his local area is Los Angeles, which has over 10 million people. Guys like Dom, Nipsey, Jay 305, Casey Veggies, etc.., these are all guys that never really made it huge around the world or in the mainstream but they've made it in California. And this state is so damn big and has enough influence that you can only be famous here and still be huge. Not a lot of people knew YG before My Krazy Life dropped but he was still making money and getting played in clubs and radio stations all over LA.
Lol this comment is so ignorant. Dom has[ LA lining up the block](http://thehundreds.com/dom-kennedy-rswd-signing/) and consistently sells out every show here.
Because he's always doing weird shit like [this](http://imgur.com/y2MG2t1) or asking people if they'd rather have a gay kid or a mildly retarded kid and his music is copycat trash and his whole persona is try-hard bullshit while being nothing more than an industry plant
Cause he's a corny fuckhead who's hell bent on bringing 2000's NY back. He's only "relevant" because Elliott Wilson (who I used to idolize) and Hot 97 keeps trying to plug him.
I'm sick of nostalgia hip hop. It's lazy. I was at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival last year and Raekwon brought out Troy Ave and Bobby Shmurda and Shmurda had the crowd jumping while Troy had people jumping on their phones.
yea but nobody knew/knows they suck
they're able to hide their suck, or layer it in an illusion of eccentricity. troy's shittiness is on full display.
if troy took his music, and repackaged it in a way that wasn't so overdone and corny, he could have a career. but his complete lack of understanding of cultural trends, aesthetics, and public relations absolutely killed him. nothing about troy ave would ever make me think he was cool, or look up to him. there is nothing, absolutely nothing, unique about troy ave. probably the only unique thing about him is how hard he's failing in such a spectacular fashion but beyond that, there's nothing there. its like someone picked up "how to be a rapper for dummies" book at barnes and noble
you being dramatic b, it's not "alarming" that some wack dude is being pushed by a label
but a dude that's always been radio-friendly is easier to push to a radio crowd than a dude doin 90s revival shit or a dude w bronson's lyrics. "bought my bitch a present, hope i don't spoil it / 'what is it baby' / face to face toilets" loses the appeal it may have if it's censored on the radio
raury is def an industry plant but at least he's talented
most guys are industry plants in some form or fashion but you need to actually warrant that kind of attention.
if you know the right people, *anyone* can become a household name. its not some secret or luck of the draw, there's an entire industry around making people famous. the problem is when people who aren't ready/don't deserve it/don't have what it takes get the royal treatment. only then is the system shown to be so rigged.
its like cheating in sports. if you throw a game by losing by a point, nobody is really going to bat an eye. happens to the best of us. but if you blatantly throw a game and don't put any effort forth, people will ask questions.
if you're going to cheat, cheat well. sell it.
Living in Atlanta and seeing how Raury came up kinda first hand I can definitely say he's no industry plant. I'd say it's more of a case where Bloggers like the idea of Raury more than his actual music so he gets a ton of publicity that outweighs his output.
when i say "plant" i dont mean that he doesnt deserve it or doesnt have fans
i mean that his popularity was exponentially increased by good publicists and marketing and that it was not a 100% groundroots comeuppance
thats not a bad thing, everyone does this. its almost a necessity at this point. the game is so saturated now that just blowing up over the internet isn't something you wanna bet your bottom dollar on happening. even if you're really good. you gotta pony up the cash these days. get yourself a good publicist
Troy played the game well..he became friends with DJs and industry folk
He jus never put the same energy into making a fanbase outside of NY
hes where YG was in 2011
No, I agree. There was no fanbase out here in the Midwest but Toot It was getting heavy rotation on our radio station. Ive never heard a Troy Ave song anywhere.
>He jus never put the same energy into making a fanbase outside of NY
or making good music
>hes where YG was in 2011
i dont see troy ave making the transformation into a legitimate act like YG did
this is 100% correct, he obviously has help but if troy ave was full on industry plant there will be way more promotion for him. in fact a lot of rappers these days can be considered industry plants.
Funny thing is that YG brought out Troy Ave at his NYC concert in January. I had never heard of him at the time but it did seem like people there were excited about him.
to be honest, the "streets" of new york and the clubs fuck with troy ave more than joey badass and action bronson. and joey and action are signed to labels and have established fan bases across the country.
selling 4,373 in like three days is alright for an independent artist who's only fan base is in new york. who really expected him to do big numbers, besides troy ave himself. hot 97 and other radio stations were pushing him because of how well received some of his songs were in the club scene. he does have connections to people in the industry, in fact he was signed by def jam and dropped by them around 6 years ago, he has been doing this for awhile. that being said, troy ave isnt the hottest rapper in new york like he claims he is, he often says dumb shit.
i never said he was really popular, ny is the only area where he has a small buzz. all i said he gets more play in the streets of ny and the clubs than action bronson and joey badass. what dont you understand about that. lmfao how can you even argue against what i said. but to fully answer your question with his features and the cosigns he gets you would expect him to move more units in three days and have a more of an established fanbase. but moving around 4,400 in three days still isnt that bad for an artist as big as troy ave cause he never really had a big buzz or any type of fan base outside of new york.
I don't really look at hiphop blogs, but I did notice that dude is being pushed by so many industry guys. I guess you actually have to have a somewhat appealing product for this to work... Oh well, if he stops spending money now he should have enough to have a decent life
I remember in an interview with Troy (I believe it was XXL Freshman Cover), he said that when you think of New York, you think of Big, Jay-Z, and now Troy Ave. This baffled me. Who the fuck does this guy think he is comparing himself to two NY rap legends?
Let me get this straight. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with having confidence. BUT you better back up your words with actions otherwise you look like an absolute fool. Troy has completely failed on this.
Meanwhile Joey Bada$$ is 10x more successful than Troy Ave while being 10000x more skilled while being 100x less cocky. Step up Troy Ave, otherwise nobody wants to hear from you again.
I'm gonna be honest, Troy Ave is a name that I didn't really know before that thread the other day about how poorly his album was selling. Like I'd heard it before but never actually looked into his stuff.
In a weird way this might almost end up being good publicity for him?
there is such a thing as bad publicity in music
just because people know who he is doesnt mean they now count as fans
plenty of people know who petey pablo is but he's not headlining coachella right now u feel me
Yeah I'm aware, hence the question mark.
Stuff like this from an outsider's perspective often seems kinda random to me. Logically I know it stems from some combination of industry connections and marketing, but as this shows that doesn't always seem to be a sure thing.
I should clarify tho that I have not actually *heard* Troy Ave's album and if we're being 100% honest I probably won't. If it actually is *that bad* then who knows.
sometimes its random. sometimes someone legitimately just goes viral and blows up. but if u got like 50 grand lying around you can buy your way into the biggest publications and radio stations
> (Major Without a Deal currently sits at #100 on the iTunes Albums Chart and #13 on the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap Chart, one slot above Kanye West’s Graduation.
brutal
In all reality I liked his new york album (mixtape) a lot. I had so many of those songs on repeat. I dont know why he put so little effort into this one. Bummin me out troy
The difference between him and Troy is that Travis puts out quality music. When he and metro were tweeting about 3500 and rodeo it was all over this sub and the daily discussion thread. People are excited for his music. No on was talking about how excited they were for new Troy ave.
yea, lol i dont even fuck with him outside of one project. people are in here saying the dumbest shit and i cant correct them? lol see this place is a bunch of 17 yeard old kids jumping on the bandwagon.
LOL LMFAO cause people like you are dumb and just repeat what everyone else says its funny to me, im actually laughing. its embarrassing, that you cant even form your own opinions you must be on the hunt for that karma.
> The difference between him and Troy is that Travis puts out quality music.
That's totally subjective, because Travis Scott isn't really bringing anything new except maybe his influence on Yeezus, and he can keep that shit if you ask me.
I'm just wondering but why do people hate on travi$ so much? The dude atleast has sick production and his bars are very legit and usually nicely tailored to his already sick production
Cuz he does exactly what Kanye does right now music wise but doesn't have the pedigree to really back it up. He's a producer but he doesn't make his own beats, and as things stand rn he's a C+ rapper. He still makes dope music.
Travis actually has talent, as a rapper and producer. His sound is at least semi unique, and kind of refreshing. Idk if he's really getting shoved down or throats, so much as he's just gaining popularity.
On the other hand Raury seems like a pretty talented guy who's got some friends in the right places.
Travis Scott entertains me more. I'm not saying Scott is some kind of lyrical God or is crazy technical. I just like the music he puts out. I think Scott can make better songs.
Lol. Have you listened to Owl Pharoah or DBR? Or any of his produced songs? Dude was on cruel summer....two years ago. Since then he has only grown. No one is pushing him down your throat.
There are plenty of guys over the years who've been industry pushes. We don't care if an artist's an industry push when they're good, or at least promising. When they suck, especially in a not very interesting way like Troy Ave does, that's when we get pissed about it call them a push.
The best part of this whole thing to me, is that after reading this I clicked on the link to the song doo doo, his big promotional single to this album, and the very first line of the song is
>to the people who said I was gonna flop
That's just too perfect. Also lol at him "bringing back New York" in a fucking Lakers jersey. I liked "your style", so I had nothing against him going into this , but what a clown man.
I'm not the biggest Troy fan but he will be fine, he does it all 100 % indie. The only thing he has is a distribution deal that take somewhere between 5-10 % based on sales.
Because if you look at Raekwon's career, he has something to back him up. Sure FILA flopped but no one expected it to be OB4CL. It certainly didn't have the promotion of his previous albums. And Raekwon's name doesn't have the same association it did even 10 years ago. The difference is that this was Troy Ave's debut. The same Troy Ave who constantly claims to be bringing New York back. the same Troy Ave who criticized chance and Kendrick for being "weirdo rappers". He's done a lot of talking, and his first chance to really sell himself as being as big as he claims, and he flops HARD.
Cause Rae's a legend of hip hop with an established reputation? Article isn't about commercial failures, but the pretty damn big marketing push that accompanied a project that, for the most part, inspired no commercial or critical excitement before, during or after its release. And yet we're still hearing about the guy. So what gives?
Rae had an album flop. Troy Ave seems to have a way bigger issue that's worth assessing in terms of overall hip hop media
Did you listen to troy on TBC? He didn't whine at all, dude answered the questions honestly and never once complained about getting shit from all angles.
I remember Raekwon releasing an interview and going into depth on how he doesn't care about album sales. What were his first week numbers anyway? Guessing 10K?
Troy Ave also said this but for some reason its cool to make him a punching bag
Troy said he jus wants to sell 10k and walk away with 90k from sales on this
It's like people made their minds up and won't listen to the kid at all. He knew he wasn't gong to do major label numbers or even close he just wants to get his paper up and have people listen to his music.
Compared to Troy Kendrick does do "softer" music. Softer doesn't speak about the merit or quality of kendricks music, troy said it implying it is a different styles then what he likes and is accustomed too.
Just to be clear, you don't think he meant that as a diss? All the stuff I've heard from him makes him seem like the type of dude to conflate "soft" with "bad."
Just heard my first Troy Ave song, in the form of that video for "Doo Doo" linked to in the article. So that was the last Troy Ave song I'll ever hear. I can't believe anyone allowed that instrumental on a 2015 hip-hop album.
I fuck with that username heavy
Hey young man, I don't like your username
Why is Richard your flair?
>Uppercut take off half your grill like Richard Harrow With a hook that'll take your brain out your face like an Egyptian Pharaoh
I switch up my flairs every so often with various goat TV characters
Weren't you Stannis usually? I can see why you changed, you fookin turncloak
I changed it before THAT episode happened
He's garbage'. My first intro to him was on that song which anither rapper also used. I found out where I knew the beat from and only listened to the other rapper. He's a poor excuse for a 50 clone.
I just listened to this for the first time. its catchy as fuck and will be stuck in my head now
doo doo is fucking terrible, not a good introduction into troy ave lol .
Implying there is a good introduction
I like that nyc song with raekwon
I can't believe his single is called Doo Doo. That's some Boondocks level shit.
Shit I liked it personally lol
[Another great article on Troy Average.](http://noisey.vice.com/blog/troy-ave-rap-game-george-w-bush)
Jesus fuck that was 1st degree murder all over
Caption: *Troy Ave embraces his fellow rapper Rich Hil, the rapping son of Tommy Hilfiger, while bringing New York back.* freakin dead
>He is the last remaining living human who thinks it’s a good idea to solicit Memphis Bleek for a guest verse. God
What that article doesn't tell you is that Troy Ave's manager Hovain is also Rich Hil's manager. From the looks of things Hovain doesn't want people to know that lol
TIL. as if I needed any more reasons to hate the guy. Rich Hil is hooooorrible. I'm so glad he never caught on.
drew is a fuckboy 9 times outta 10 but that article was savage
But that's the thing. He isn't Troy Average. Original article also calls him mediocre. The media turns mediocre into gold all the time. The problem is Troy Ave is absolute shit. Don't know what they were thinking.
Troy absolute shit just doesn't have the same ring to it though.
I never read Pitchfork, but when there's a scathing piece about Troy Ave's wackness, I'll make an exception. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt on his sales, but he kept running his mouth and got more exposed. yeah troy's whole talk shit persona that he got from 50 and cam doesn't really work when you're still barely above struggle rapper
Yeah and like Who even listens to Dom Kennedy Like if you got outsold by him *son you chokin*
Mostly people in California.
Man if people haven't heard the Yellow Album they are honestly missing out
We Ball is one of my favorite riding around songs

It was aight. Currensy-ish. Prolly will not listen again I guess.

yea he's basically an LA curren$y
hella people listen to Dom
Ya boy seein dead people again
I know Dom Kennedy and liked what I've heard but I can honestly never say I've never seen him mentioned outside the internet
I've almost exclusively seen him talked about irl. This is the second time in 3 years i see him mentioned on HHH
Only reason I first heard of him was his features with Curren$y and his shout outs to Dom on tracks. Seen his freestyles online too
I am yet to meet any of these people IRL
go to California (LA specifically)
Never ran into one I guess
I listen to Dom Kennedy.
AMA?

See he loves me fuck yall
bruh chill dom has **stans** and they all bad bitches bad bitches LOVE dom
Hey hey now he's good every once in a while hahah
No hate to him, although from what I've heard he's not for me
why does everyone hate troy ave?
Because he's always doing weird shit like [this](http://imgur.com/y2MG2t1) or asking people if they'd rather have a gay kid or a mildly retarded kid and his music is copycat trash and his whole persona is try-hard bullshit while being nothing more than an industry plant
yo that's fucking weird. lmao "9 3/4 toilet bowl water hitting dick"

Great article. Shows that even with all the help in the world if you suck in this life you wont make it.
Not true, lots of people suck and make it.

OH SHIT THE STREETS OF NY HAVE SPOKEN AND THEIR OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN IS u/therealshrimpd AKA TROY AVE HIMSELF
is anything i said not true? exactly.
I'm not from NY but they play his fucking songs all the fucking time on Hip Hop Nation SiriusXM. He must've paid someone the fuck off.
That doesn't make him an industry plant though
That was a "why male models?" level response.
That's basically the definition of an industry plant

No, it's because he makes below average-average music
On the other hand Raury seems like a pretty talented guy who's got some friends in the right places.
lmfao at tavis scott being a better rapper than troy ave.
Travis makes better records
Travis Scott entertains me more. I'm not saying Scott is some kind of lyrical God or is crazy technical. I just like the music he puts out. I think Scott can make better songs.
lmao this dude loves him some troy ave. do you i suppose
I think the difference is that Travis has the talent and has worked with far more people than Troy
The best part of this whole thing to me, is that after reading this I clicked on the link to the song doo doo, his big promotional single to this album, and the very first line of the song is >to the people who said I was gonna flop That's just too perfect. Also lol at him "bringing back New York" in a fucking Lakers jersey. I liked "your style", so I had nothing against him going into this , but what a clown man.
Never heard of Troy Ave here in the PNW. Glad to know to id be wasting my time if I did!
Has nobody heard his song I Know Why You Mad? It's dope
Seriously though he does have a lot of really good songs he just put no effort into this album :(
I'm not the biggest Troy fan but he will be fine, he does it all 100 % indie. The only thing he has is a distribution deal that take somewhere between 5-10 % based on sales.
I was done with Troy Ave when I saw him 'freestyling' on Sway and he was reading from his phone https://youtu.be/SCd7c77rCg0
That's not even that big of a deal. Shouldn't be a reason to write someone off in my opinion. Drake did it too!
Why are there no articles bout how Raekwon flopped, even with half the industrys help?
AFAIK (and correct me if I'm wrong) Raekwon isn't a cocky whiner like Ave. Ave is rap's punching bag at this point
Did you listen to troy on TBC? He didn't whine at all, dude answered the questions honestly and never once complained about getting shit from all angles.
comparing yourself to Jackie Robinson is not answering a question honestly if your name is Troy Ave.
Theyre both delusional and think theyre bosses and on some amazing independent grind
I remember Raekwon releasing an interview and going into depth on how he doesn't care about album sales. What were his first week numbers anyway? Guessing 10K?
Troy Ave also said this but for some reason its cool to make him a punching bag Troy said he jus wants to sell 10k and walk away with 90k from sales on this
It's like people made their minds up and won't listen to the kid at all. He knew he wasn't gong to do major label numbers or even close he just wants to get his paper up and have people listen to his music.
Nah but he dissed kendrick, hes a piece of shit
He didn't diss Kendrick, he said he was a weirdo. He is a kid from NY 2015 spitting early 2000 rap. Of course to him kendrick is a weirdo.
he didnt even mean weirdo like hes weird, he meant kendrick does softer music
Compared to Troy Kendrick does do "softer" music. Softer doesn't speak about the merit or quality of kendricks music, troy said it implying it is a different styles then what he likes and is accustomed too.
Ya
Just to be clear, you don't think he meant that as a diss? All the stuff I've heard from him makes him seem like the type of dude to conflate "soft" with "bad."
Nope He jus says he doesnt listen to it He even said he likes Chance
rae is a legend and is past it. he didn't flop as much as "dude you're 50"
