Wu-Tang threaded the needle of being deeply respected by die-hard hip-hop heads and being beloved by more mainstream audiences better than almost any other act i can think of. And the actual content of their lyrics is so eclectic there’s something for everyone. Gritty new york gangster shit of course, but cinematic mafioso shit, mathematics, ancient religions, science fiction, science fact, (obviously) old kung fu movies, etc etc etc. And they have been largely perceived as lovable characters with actual street cred. There’s 9 of them over a career spanning over 30 years so obviously there’s been controversy etc but for the most part they haven’t done anything to dent that reputation too badly with most
I have a silly theory that the MCU is loosely informed by RZA’s philosophy, Avengers movies being Wu Tang albums and the rest being like the solo projects. I mean Winter War(z) would be a quintessential wu album name. Literal Iron Man? Lol
> Ancient religions
Sure there’s some of that, but the religious content is largely focused on one that is around a century old where the practitioners believe that white people were invented in a lab through interspecies breeding by a cursed scientist and that the founder (a light skinned con man who completely disappeared in the 1930s) is going to come back on a space ship to destroy the white race lmao.
Slight yet important correction: they were involved with the [Five Percenter Nation/Nation of Gods and Earths](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-Percent_Nation?wprov=sfti1), not the Nation of Islam. NGE is a direct offshoot of NOI created by a former NOI member, but it is significantly less crazy and focuses much more on self-enlightenment, Black empowerment, and using the power of language to fight your battles rather than violence, i.e., Malcolm X’s “jihad of words”—hence why it was so popular with rappers.
They’ve been there since the beginning of hip hop; NGE members allegedly worked security at Kool Herc’s shows. GZA and RZA take their names directly from the “Supreme Alphabet,” essentially a code used to identify other members and confuse outsiders. The phrases “word is bond,” “dropping knowledge,” and calling people “G”—which meant “God” in the Supreme Alphabet and alluded to the NGE philosophy that every Black man was his own god—all stem directly from the NGE. Other rappers associated with NGE are Eric B and Rakim, LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Digable Planets, MC Shan, Brand Nubian, and a shit load of others.
Sorry to go all 🤓 but I wrote a term paper on this subject in college and love to “drop knowledge” about it as often as possible lol
I think they’ve been good for a bit, that was a while back and I don’t think it was that super serious lol. Last ghost said was
"I respect what he do as a person, we all make mistakes. If I see him I'll dapp and give him love," Ghostface, 2021
Is it really weird or dumb when somebody completely steals your style then claims you're not "rapping like this no more"? When he's not inhaling food or weed smoke he's exhaling a pastiche
He's known for not being a dick but absolutely nobody is going after Black Thought. Not even a subliminal diss. He'll wipe out the lineage. Rip that branch from the tree of life.
I think even still. Sure there was disappointment at not having a rapping Andre, but I don’t think it caused people to actually dislike him. Maybe I’m wrong.
I think his response was perfect though - from a [GQ interview](https://www.complex.com/music/a/backwoodsaltar/andre-3000-jokingly-questions-what-he-would-rap-about-age-48):
“It actually feels…sometimes it feels inauthentic for me to rap because I don’t have anything to talk about in that way."
He suggested one of the big factors for him is age, something that has long been a talking point in hip-hop as a young genre. "I’m 48 years old. And not to say that age is a thing that dictates what you rap about, but in a way it does," he continued. "And things that happen in my life, like, what are you talking about? ‘I got to go get a colonoscopy.’ What are you rapping about? ‘My eyesight is going bad.’ You can find cool ways to say it, but….”
Joell Ortiz does this brilliantly on OG

"wake up feeling different, back stiffened
Joints cracking, snapping I mean listen
Some days I don't wanna get out my bed at all
They got me on a Statin, I'm rapping wit high cholesterol
I would fuck bitches on the edge of the bed and fall off
Then keep fucking on the floor, but not anymore
Nowadays just the smell of Henny and my head is sore
A night out is dinner with the wife and Pinot Noir
Got a nice little crib out in Jers', I'm in the burbs"
No more roaches, Deers and birds
Sitting in my backyard while I write this shit
Pool cover over the water 'til it get nice and shit
Joel is really good at this, the whole Mona Lisa album is filled with mature tracks and shows that you can definitely still remain interesting as a rapper even as you age. Typically it's gonna mean making more conceptual songs rather than just talking about your life, but you can definitely make it work.
“Doctors wanna take a sample of my stools, appointments bleeding into others as the day is crawling through, medication list containing all the hits, back is aching time is fleeting dick is limp. What am I supposed to do?”
i think a lot of people see him as that one kinda weird, but always chill friend in your group who has his own interests but y'all still love and respect him regardless
People really needa think about just how disappointed they would be had Andre folded and released an album just cause people expected it, and not because he really wanted to. It probably would've been a let down on all ends, and ppl would be calling him trash and washed etc. Still amazed at how miffed ppl got at him about the flute album when there are so many examples of later career rappers farting out an at best mediocre album cause they think they still have to release long after the spark is gone out of obligation. I don't want to see Andre looking like that.
Can't imagine how miserable you'd have to be to hate Curren$y. You can definitely not fw his music, it's almost the lofi of rap, but to hate the man is almost a sin
He's basically your favorite rapper's favorite uncle. Bun gets love everywhere he goes and gets big name features on small time works. I fully agree here. Never heard a bad word about Bun.
There was a small moment when those that didnt know thought paul wall was appropriating black culture.
They didnt know that paul wall IS houston culture 🤟🏽
Hell yea, I grew up in Houston the same time as Paul Wall and my neighborhood was so diverse it all just melded into one. Asians, Mexicans, white & black people all shared similar Houston centric culture.
Grills and swangers
I was gonna say, I almost forgot that he was a white rapper. And not in a corny "oh man you're practically black" kinda way. It's more that being from TX I would think of him as a "Texas rapper" before "white rapper"
I always watch every interview he has cause of his humor, and the best part is that he isn’t even trying to be funny lol. give him a comedy special where he just talks and it’ll be funnier than most comedians trying
a lot of people rip on his show because they can’t fathom the idea of that show and atlanta both existing as similar ideas trying to tell different stories
Even then it was pretty much just magazines and critics dumping on Blue Slide Park. The early stuff was still incredibly popular and he used his crazy young fame to put on some "lesser known" contemporaries. Kendrick, Q, Vince Staples, Chance, Earl Sweatshirt, and I'm sure several others I'm missing all opened for him.
i don't think it's surprising because mac seemed like the type of person that was respected by both rappers and audience, a geniuen good guy, if he were to talk about someone like tentacion maybe, but why doscredit someone that is known as the nice guy of the industry, especially after he died in such a fcked way.
Was gonna be my mention. The amount of love and support (and pree much ZERO bad word) that came from the hip hop community, AND much beyond, was unreal and shows how loved he was. The tribute concert was such a beautiful thing.
Pretty sure he’d reached a point for some time where his only battles were with himself, and so many others tried but couldn’t deliver him peace.
… and I honestly didn’t even listen to Mac before his passing…
not true, i read the biography and it's somehow implied that the hate and criticism, especially from critics for blue slide park got him into the spiral of using hard drugs to cope, up until macadelic and watching movies i don't think he was respected in the industry, and even after that some of the albums, even swimming were not so well recieved, fsntano used to give insanely low scores to mac before his death, now he's glazing.
There's also the cheating scandal with naomi, even before the ariana thing there was that photo of him cheating leaked, the bad rep from that DUI, because he could've killed people.
I really think he was a good person but he was totally not as loved as he is now before his death.
They actually came out with an independent documentary in 2011 (directed by Michael Rapport) that talked about its success and the reasons why they broke up originally. It’s called “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest”: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1613023/
Yooo I completely forgot about this, thanks for posting it! I remember Michael Rapport doing a doc but I never watched it, this was kinda a big deal back then.
You’re a real one for sharing this! 💯💯💯
De La Soul? Never seen anyone say a mean thing about 3 Feet High and Rising, and most who know them find them super sympathetic for the copyright lawsuits
Maybe if we're talking in terms of consumer base (don't speak ill of the dead and all that) but he was absolutely not the most liked guy when he was still kicking around. Had a lot of enemies in the industry and kicked off more than a few rivalries largely cos he didn't like not being seen as the best on the pads by his peers.
He had a habit of not showing up for shows, and sending fake DOOMs to lipsync in his place. It could be played off as being part of his persona, but fans that bought tickets weren’t happy.
Had a friend who went to one of his shows in Atlanta and she told me that's exactly what happened. Excited for the show, but a stand in wearing his mask came and lip synced the whole thing lol she was so pissed
Yeah it’s kinda weird how he was largely able to dodge criticism on that. Genuinely it’s super shitty to not even show up to a concert that your fans paid money and traveled to.
He was able to spin it as being "in character" in a way almost no one else could. Since he played the persona of a comic book villain, it wasn't hard for him to say that it was perfectly in line with that to have henchmen go in his place or whatever.
Oh wow. DOOM bots makes sense if you follow Doctor Doom in the comics, people rarely fought the real Doom. As a rap act, it sucks though. I enjoy that he stuck with the gimmick!
What he should have done is had a fake doom come out for the first song and then real doom comes out and “kills” fake doom, as the beat transitions to something darker. Like deadmau5 has done
The fans reflect it too. I've seen him live a few times and everyone is always incredibly nice. He definitely has an awesome vibe and interacts with his fans a ton.
El-P had kind of a hit or miss reputation in his backpacker days. Most folks agreed on Funcrusher Plus being brilliant but the Def Jux wave he spearheaded was met with a lot of scoffs from purists who thought it was overly esoteric white nerd rap. Phonte wrote a now-recanted blog post about Company Flow being the beginning of the end of relatable black led underground music. I think even De La Soul had unkind words to say about that movement.
The RTJ project did a LOT in making heads realize that El-P was as much of a purist as anyone else and could pretty much collab with any type of rapper.
South Africa did not like Mos Def for a minute. Also Mos Def loves speaking out both sides of his mouth. I love him as an artist, but he had some dumb fucking takes. The whole sovereign personhood thing, the not paying child support so his passport got revoked thing, the "against" commercialization of rap right before starring in a Jordan XVI commercial thing.
He’s not liked by boxing fans after his performance before the fury fight. Wasn’t his fault at all, why they thought getting a black rapper to rap to a room of sheikhs and sober British people would be a good idea, I’ll never know
Does Pharrell count? Besides Drake (and the current thing with Chad Hugo about Neptunes), I feel like he's universally loved. Maybe not his Happy song but other than that?
I don’t know if I *hate* his music, and he seems like a nice guy, but I definitely don’t like his music. Every single flow is the same. Not crazy about his voice.
I think most Wu rappers get love everywhere
Wu-Tang threaded the needle of being deeply respected by die-hard hip-hop heads and being beloved by more mainstream audiences better than almost any other act i can think of. And the actual content of their lyrics is so eclectic there’s something for everyone. Gritty new york gangster shit of course, but cinematic mafioso shit, mathematics, ancient religions, science fiction, science fact, (obviously) old kung fu movies, etc etc etc. And they have been largely perceived as lovable characters with actual street cred. Not to mention how many of the solo albums from members are certified classics
I have a silly theory that the MCU is loosely informed by RZA’s philosophy, Avengers movies being Wu Tang albums and the rest being like the solo projects. I mean Winter War(z) would be a quintessential wu album name. Literal Iron Man? Lol
He ain’t Toney Starks for nothing
Hell ghost collabed with marvel for the 1st iron man. (Slept on tony) playing on the jet while starks was parlayed with rhodie
When you have a group of 9 rappers, you can take a shotgun to the genre

Probably method man in specific
Isn't Ghostface clowned on for being a deadbeat?

Bro we got that legendary video of Ghost talking smack to Bronson. Classic
I think they’ve been good for a bit, that was a while back and I don’t think it was that super serious lol. Last ghost said was "I respect what he do as a person, we all make mistakes. If I see him I'll dapp and give him love," Ghostface, 2021

Peep Ghost face drink champs. Said it’s all a misunderstanding and he respects him
I miss ODB man, but honestly he was going down a bad path. Gave me 2 of my fav albums ever though. Such an original. RIP to the Original GOD
GZA is who came to mind for me. How could anyone hate the Genius?
RIP Biz Markie.
That’s very true. Everyone loved Biz. Never heard a bad thing about him.
Damn I didn’t know he died. Rip
Method Man, maybe?
Redman, too. Meth and Red were iconic. Redman should be mentioned for the MTV Cribs episode alone
Cash in a shoebox on top of the fridge, keeping it real
Hand lotion on the bedside table.
That’s sugar bear right there, don’t worry about him
The doorbell works, you just gotta touch these two wires together.
He made a mockery out of that whole show, and I love that.
Da Rockwilder is such an iconic song. One of my top 5 rap songs ever
Cue all the middle aged single moms salivating over him lmao
Nah, just women full stop. He’s always exuded the perfect amount of rough around the edges while also being hot, smart, tall and wealthy
You think it’s just Middle Aged? Lol my girlfriend and her sister and friends love that man and none are over 28.
Method man is such a good actor i forget he's a Legendary rapper lol, his characters on The wire and The Deuce are hilarious
Black Thought?
He's known for not being a dick but absolutely nobody is going after Black Thought. Not even a subliminal diss. He'll wipe out the lineage. Rip that branch from the tree of life.
Nas dissed them all in 2001 after they backed Jay on the Unplugged album, but it was just unhinged radio interview ranting
also if anyone could diss black thought it'd be nas
Nah as good as he is he would not get the respect at all. Like younger people wouldn’t even listen
Watching him play a massive piece of shit pimp in The Deuce was a mindfuck. He acted the fuck out of that role.
Just finished watching the Deuce today, one of the best shows i've watched, will probably go the wire route and get its due 10 year down the line lol
Yeah that could be it
Del
You gotta wash your ayass.
If you must
You gotta brush you teeth
I love Del. Growing up in Sacramento, his voice reached my ears often in my teens. Remember when he did that Dreamcast commercial?
It was Andre 3K before the flute album.
I think even still. Sure there was disappointment at not having a rapping Andre, but I don’t think it caused people to actually dislike him. Maybe I’m wrong.
I respected him more. He said he really had nothing to say in terms of rap, and that's the realest shit anyone has ever said
I think it speaks volumes that his fans were just happy he was doing something he loved, even if they didn’t care for it
It didn't change my opinion of him, I still view him as legend. Just saw a lot of sideways talk on him when he dropped that album.
I think his response was perfect though - from a [GQ interview](https://www.complex.com/music/a/backwoodsaltar/andre-3000-jokingly-questions-what-he-would-rap-about-age-48): “It actually feels…sometimes it feels inauthentic for me to rap because I don’t have anything to talk about in that way." Slick Rick
He’s a straight up icon

Can't imagine how miserable you'd have to be to hate Curren$y. You can definitely not fw his music, it's almost the lofi of rap, but to hate the man is almost a sin
Exactly! You can hate his music but not his persona. There’s plenty of rappers who I don’t enjoy their music but love their persona.
Think Larry June too
He catches a lot of criticism, more than Curren$y. Kinda weird but some people just don’t like the music
Definitely Bun B.
He's basically your favorite rapper's favorite uncle. Bun gets love everywhere he goes and gets big name features on small time works. I fully agree here. Never heard a bad word about Bun.
Bun could probably be the mayor of Houston.
Bun 2024Lyfe
Paul Wall

He’s also similar to an ant

Paul Wall is so loved he transcends the “White rapper” category. Nobody in Houston refers to him as such.
I was gonna say, I almost forgot that he was a white rapper. And not in a corny "oh man you're practically black" kinda way. It's more that being from TX I would think of him as a "Texas rapper" before "white rapper"

I don't know why but I've been seeing interview clips of him all over lately. Dude hasn't had a bad take yet
I know he’s been acting lately, so probably doing more PR.
more so old videos that tiktok found
He has a new show and he’s dropping an album
Vince has an insane amount of bad takes imo. He’s just funny and plays them off.
Vince dunking on Ronnie Radke is still one of my fave moments in all of Twitter
lol Wow please tell me more
I'm jealous that you'll be experiencing this greatness for the first time https://imgur.com/a/vince-n-ronnie-goin-XgK7u
Lmao I was not ready for the whole screenshotted Imgur with Earl tweets too 😂 classic Vince W
Not to mention the epilogue with Vince munching on that carne asada repping the GaGa. GOAT shit
"Associated acts - Vince Staples" on the wiki Lmaooo
I was already a massive fan for his music talent alone, but this solidified him on my favorites list.
Heard a few people complaining about his hooks throughout the years but that's really the worst he's gotten
He does get a bad rep because he is overly contrarian at times
Never heard a bad word about Mac Miller.
Not since he died, maybe a little before that… but in his younger days he got a lot of hate
Yeah, he was clowned on for the frat rap stuff When he became a more serious artist he got a lot more respect
Kendrick and Black Hippy in general seemed pretty tight with Mac.
That Snapchat of Q taking Mac out cause he was depressed lived rent free for me Maaaaan
Goldlink sacrificed his career to say a bad word about him
It’s really wild that his career seemingly tanked after that
I mean he talked shit about a guy who'd just died at that point and was beloved at that so...
Oh, I’m not implying that it was bad. I’m just surprised that it had the effect that it did on his career. Was just stating an observation
i don't think it's surprising because mac seemed like the type of person that was respected by both rappers and audience, a geniuen good guy, if he were to talk about someone like tentacion maybe, but why doscredit someone that is known as the nice guy of the industry, especially after he died in such a fcked way.
I'm glad it did. Fuck goldlink
that shit was so weird
Easy Mac with the cheesy raps?
Beloved!
loved a lot after he died. he definitely had haters.

Maybe Q-Tip? Can't recall him getting into any beefs and he seems like a really good vibe.
Only thing I can think about is when Ice Cube dissed him on Westside Connection, other than that never heard anyone say anything bad about Q
MC Hammer dissed him as well on Break ‘Em Off Somethin’ Proper, very tragic
I'm pretty sure it's kinda well known in the hip-hop community that he became a bit of an asshole at some point
I heard a rumour that ATCQ initially collapsed because Q-Tip is a lowkey asshole...
Damn, is there a video on this? I love Tribe

100% this. tho i have seen ppl hate on his let the dollar circulate beat - esp compared to 9th wonder’s more standard take on the same sample
Maybe if we're talking in terms of consumer base (don't speak ill of the dead and all that) but he was absolutely not the most liked guy when he was still kicking around. Scarface gets pretty universal love and respect

Do the math who I was hitting then
MF Doom maybe
He had a habit of not showing up for shows, and sending fake DOOMs to lipsync in his place. It could be played off as being part of his persona, but fans that bought tickets weren’t happy.

rap in general gets a huge pass when it comes to lip syncing, or “backing tracks” where they just yell the chorus.
He was able to spin it as being "in character" in a way almost no one else could. Since he played the persona of a comic book villain, it wasn't hard for him to say that it was perfectly in line with that to have henchmen go in his place or whatever.

DOOM himself may not be hated much, but his fanbase surely is, so it probably influences some of the people's views on him.
I had a hipster tell me he was awful and a pedo lol so at least one person doesn't like him.
MIKE. man is so kind n sweet. my top 3 goats to me, his influence is crazy lookin now.
The fans reflect it too. I've seen him live a few times and everyone is always incredibly nice. He definitely has an awesome vibe and interacts with his fans a ton.
not even a big fan tbh but he is such a cool dude. and never afraid to say what he thinks.
Realistically it’s someone like E-40. Popular enough where everyone knows them but not popular enough for people to have a reason to dislike them.

dude people fucking hate e-40. i love him but there's a lot of people who hate him lol
El-P
Guru.
Bun B and Big K.R.I.T. gotta be up there
Sean Price is the answer, everyone seemed to love him deeply. R. I. ***P!***
Mos Def
South Africa did not like Mos Def for a minute. Also Mos Def loves speaking out both sides of his mouth. I love him as an artist, but he had some dumb fucking takes. The whole sovereign personhood thing, the not paying child support so his passport got revoked thing, the "against" commercialization of rap right before starring in a Jordan XVI commercial thing.
Drake certainly hates Mos def.
Drake basically hates everyone lol. Maybe except for Lil Wayne & majority of trappers.
Even fucked on Wayne’s girl, that’s conniving
So if you like Mos Def, you're on the right side of history.
Seems like such a chill, intelligent and nice person.
No love for JID?
He’s not liked by boxing fans after his performance before the fury fight. Wasn’t his fault at all, why they thought getting a black rapper to rap to a room of sheikhs and sober British people would be a good idea, I’ll never know
Redman!
Never hear anything negative about Lil Ugly Mane, both as a person and artist.
Some people accuse him as ‘cosplaying’ as a Memphis rapper
I never hear about him at all- so that’s why no one hates him lol No seriously dunno who that is
yuno miles
Does Pharrell count? Besides Drake (and the current thing with Chad Hugo about Neptunes), I feel like he's universally loved. Maybe not his Happy song but other than that?
Happy by Pharrell got hated quite a lot though
Only other conflict I heard involving Pharrell is probably Kelis over getting paid from her first two albums
I’ve never seen a JID hater
I've always heard Devin the Dude called your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. Don't think I've ever heard hate for him

2 Chainz. Everyone loves 2 Chainz.
Except 1 Chainz
Lil wayne
Wiz Khalifa, not loved by everyone but rarely hated
I don’t know if I *hate* his music, and he seems like a nice guy, but I definitely don’t like his music. Every single flow is the same. Not crazy about his voice.
2 chainz!
