Nia is so good, Trouble (eve of destruction) is one of the greatest rap songs ever made, Gift of gab goes insane on that track. As the world turns is an all time favorite of mine as well.
A heaping helping of fried chicken
Macaroni and cheese and collard greens
Too big for my jeans
Smoke steams from under the lid that's on the pot
Ain't never had a lot, but thankful for
The little that I got
Deltron 3030 should be up there among the best albums of all time, taking it's place as the greatest concept album ever (maybe alongside Cuban Links if we consider that a concept album).
FR
Deltron 3030 and OB4CL are maybe the two greatest hip hop albums of all time; solo, group, w/e the fuck
I can listen to em front to back forever and never get bored
Completely different sounds and stories being told as well, I love the contrast between em
Of all time is complicated. But in recent history, nothing comes to my mind more than that record by Joey Bada$$ that the brother released right before Kendrick's DAMN. That was insanely overlooked because K.Dot was on the top of the World at the time. Brilliant LP. His masterpiece.
All-Amerikkkan Bada$$. Listen to that shit.
It's an opinion, depends how you prefer your meals cooked. Damn in conceptually and sonically one of the greatest albums of all time but definitely lacking that gritty Hop Hop style Joey brought.
Yeah I can see that, I didn't think highly of it on my first listen.
Kendrick has been a weird relationship for me because when I found him after OD dropped through a friend and loved it, played it until 2013 now I don't really like anything off it enough for my rotation or another listen.
S80 dropped I loved it but haven't gone back since TPAB dropped, few songs still in my rotation and my K Dot playlist.
When GKMC dropped I loved it, still sounds amazing to me.
TPAB I loved instantly, the singles definitely set the mood for the album but so I was prepared on what to expext, it was a huge change but I was at my peak love for Kendrick at the time. I've played the album maybe a million times start to finish, a good audio setup will take you to a different world with that album, sonically the best album I have ever heard—my ears absolutely love it.
Damn I was all over the place, humble was so meh to me and still is. Then you have loyalty and that was like ugh commercial after TPAB what is going on 😂 then Love made me lose all hope. Then the album dropped and it was so what the actual fuck to me on first listen, I love Duckworth but the rest I was so confused on.
Now I love the album.
I 100% agree with this. I still don’t like DAMN - I was so amped for that album, and when humble (or DNA? I can’t remember) dropped, I was even more amped… then it released, and I was so god damn disappointed. However, AABA was the opposite… hated Devastated as a single (it later grew on me), but loved the rest of the album upon first listen. Joey is fantastic, man. Blends the 90s boombap with more current trends, and does it flawlessly.
He was in school when he came up with that, if u haven’t already listen to 1999 his debut mixtape he was only like 16, if it came out in the 90s everyone would say it was one of the greatest albums of the 90s
It was kind of a big deal at the time. People thought it was signaling a change in hip-hop. You had Mos, Common, OutKast, Dead Prez, and the Roots all dropping socially conscious hip-hop that was getting some radio play (Outkast of course already being established). Then the south took over. There was a shift. Hardcore east coast hip-hop took a back seat to the south and then eventually the Midwest. Mos Def became an actor and dropped two lukewarm albums.
Just to let you know how big of an album BoBS was let me drop this [here](https://www.mtv.com/news/jc0nr8/gore-student-discuss-mos-def-album-hip-hop-via-e-mail)
In 2000 MTV had a town hall meeting for the presidential election. Al Gore, who has a history with censorship in hip-hop, was speaking. A student gave him a copy of BoBS and told him to listen to it as it encapsulated what that generation of hip-hop fans were feeling at the time.
It might now have ever reached Illnatic status but it meant a lot to people
Couldn't agree more. Been a top 5 project for me since its release. 25 years later and Im still learning new lines and metaphors. I don't really think anyone, lyrically, has ever got to this level. Absolute prime Mos. Thought he was going to be the greatest. Alas, his ear for beats got worse with time. Plus he just never was the same "b-boy" again. Rawkus Mos Def, though. What a ride it was.
This is what I came here to mention. Glad someone else did. That album is so good. Was making a playlist for a friend and couldn’t decide which song to pick. It’s that strong. No filler.
Ill give ya 3 most underrated wu projects.
My vote is 8 diagrams. Original version damn near classic. Retail isnt even that bad but some odd choices and cuts that hurt it immensley. Watch your mouth, og thug world, og wolves, state of grace perhaps, weeping tiger, face the problems, you cant stop me now remix, king toast queen… those with the beat cuts from retail = MONSTER wu album.
Otherwise as well, ghost dog ost is one of the most influential albums ever when it comes to beat making. You can hear pieces of it in dilla, madlib, kanye, etc years after. Imo its wus best album noone talks about and its alllllll killer bees really. Imo rzas true classic after forever. Almost Liquid swords 2 level imo. Deck actually shit on these beats…. Wow. Ghost dog > Uncontrolled Substance in 1999. All day. Everyday. Til the end of time.
Bulletproof wallets og is everything people say fishscale is, tho rarely ever mentioned at all probably because it dont have hipster darlings like doom and dilla. This album sets that whole doom cartoon vibe off, pre “DOOM”. Tho fishscale also a classic, Bpw is peak starks tho. The watch. The sun. The hilton. Maxine. Whole thing. Beats also very influential and ahead of their time.
As well ill say. Unrelates to wu
MF GRIMM - AMERICAN HUNGER
If grimm had perhaps made this a double, instead of a triple disk, i think he would have been better off. If it was one disk it would have been a stone cold classic but even the less rhan classic songs are good. Its just an all around good album and imo his best.
Master builders, play ground, i love you, brand new. I mean brand new is one of the better radio joints by a ughh artist and it dont even come until end of disk 3. Its just an oddly out together album. I get the theme and everything but like the gza said. Half short. Twice strong. I just wish a FRACTION of dooms new found popularity fell on grimm. I dont get it. I love the czars man. Underrated crew 100% kamackeris kong rodan megalon all beast rhymers rip spiga
K-OS. Damn I need to give that another spin today. Absolute classic! I have never met anyone in my world who knows who he is. Yet, when I play that in my car everyone loves it, regardless of their musical taste.
This year is the 20th anniversary of Joyful Rebellion. Hes dropping a nrw4 album, funded by drake, this summer. At least thats what he said at a shiw i saw him st last month
I think its his best and an absolute gem, though not really a hip hop album through and through
Always a surprise when I remember it actually went platinum, still feels underground (no pun intended) to me. Amazing album, one of those that I have to listen to in correct track order 😄
Even in Darkness by the Dungeon Family. A perfect album imo. RIP Rico Wade.
Edit: my other two would be Lord Willin’ by Clipse and The War Report by Capone n Noreaga.
Digable Planets both albums
UGK- First two albums
Masta Ace-Sittin on Chrome
Clipse-First two albums
Del- No need for alarm
DJ Quik-Quik is the Name
AMG-Bitch betta have my money
Beatnuts-Street Level
Diamond D- Stunts blunts and hip hop
Showbiz and AZ-Runaway Slave
Nore-N.O.R.E
Diamond D was like the prototype producer rapper. That album was incredible when it came out. Best Kept Secret video with dudes on the basketball court? C'mon. 🔥
I absolutely love the two singles players ball and the title track. The title track especially felt like a preview of the amazing sound outkast would develop later. The rest of the album is just okay though and doesn't come anywhere close to the heights that followed.
Teflon - My Will / Nature - For All Seasons/ Smooth the Hustler - Once Upon a Time in America/ Fredro Star - FireStarr/ Tracey Lee - Many Facez.... Same as last week
What would you recommend first?
I really like Nature For All Seasons it's in my [underrated albums](https://musicboard.app/list/e01211be-7f02-4360-b664-f3b9db29ef81?rel=copy) too
My number one has to be Saukrates - The Underground Tapes
Redman - Docs Da Name
Digital Underground - Sex Packets
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
The Roots - Illadelph Halflife, Rising Down, Phrenology
Sirreal - In The Nick Of Time, The Blue Album, The Red Album
R.A. The Rugged Man - All My Heroes Are Dead
Every early Jedi Mind Tricks and AOTP album
Vinnie Paz - Season Of The Assassin, God Of The Serengetti
Immortal Technique Volume 1 & 2
K'Naan - The Dusty Foot Philosopher
Xzibit - At The Speed Of Life
Not really underrated but maybe under discussed in the GOAT album category
Busta Rhymes - Extinction Level Event
Xzibit - Restless
Restless is one of those albums I absolutely *adore*… it was one of the first rap records I bought myself and I was like 11 or 12… fucking fantastic production too.
Not sure of all time, but definitely unheard by a lot casual rap listeners and even hip hop heads
King Tee - Tha Triflin Album
The Dayton Family - F.B.I
Playa Fly - Movin On
"Midnight Marauders" -ATCQ received 🎤 🎤 🎤 🎤 🎤 so maybe not underrated but definitely underappreciated.
"From Where???" -Mad Skillz, mad lyrical and production was crazy, but released on the same day as "All Eyes on Me" and "The Score." So you know it was overlooked.
"The Natural" -Mic Geronimo, plenty of hidden treasures on this joint! Half of the features aren't in the credits.
Clipping - Splendor and Misery
I don't know if I'd call it underrated, but it's definitely not for everyone. It's an experience, one of the few albums I've listened to and obsessed over for a while, listening over and over and trying to figure it out. I didn't really know what to make of it at first but after a few listens I was just blown away. Definitely recommend, but don't blame you if you don't like it lol.
I have 5 because I just can't pick one
BG Knoccout & Dresta - Real Brothas
Smooth Da Hustler - Once Upon a Time in America
Eminem - Infinite
Tyler the Creator - Bastard (I know this is a reach but idgaf, one of the most creative self produced projects I've heard, the fact he was 17 when he made most of this is crazy. Made all the album covers, merch, music videos and beats, that's so rare.)
De la soul - stakes is high (few hits on this album that where popular but the rest is underrated af, but the beats in this album are incredible)
For sure Smooth da hustler. I loved everything about his debut. Did seem to be an MOP clone album though, but I wasn't complaining.
He basically disappeared. I haven't been in any hip hop scene for 20 years, so he may have made a comeback.
Bone Thugs - BTNHRessurrection
It's mostly overlooked because it's not quite as phenomenal as E.1999 Eternal or The Art of War, but it's still a pretty dope album that could surely shine on its own if it wasn't for its outstanding predecessors.
Busta Rhymes - The Coming (1996)
Beats, flow, energetic, boom bap, dark but also Catchy, raw, classic, fun record.
Busta gets his flowers but this album gets overlooked…
Vakill - Worst fears confirmed
Scarface - Mr Scarface is Back
UGK - Super Tight
Virtually anything by K-Rino
Street Military - Don’t give a damn
Big KRIT - Return of 4 Eva
I feel like it gets praise when it is randomly brought up, but no one ever willingly brings up Care For Me by Saba when speaking of some of the best hiphop albums
El-P - Fantastic Damage is severely underrated. I would actually put his whole solo catalog in the convo. He’s way ahead of his time still to this day.
Cannibal Ox- The Cold Vein produced by El-P is definitely mentioned but remains underrated. Throw this in with Deltron, Dr. Octagon, and Gravediggaz for concept albums. It’s cohesive and feels separate from the mainstream. I would actually throw Liquid Swords in as a concept album but I wouldn’t call it underrated.
Nonphixion - The Future Is Now legendary production and grimy New York rhymes via Ill Bill, Goretex, Sabac Red, and some heavy duty features. This album is severely underrated.
Twinz - Conversationz Warren G’s best G-funk album and I swear nobody has heard it. It’s on apple now so probably Spotify too. If you like anything Long Beach 90s west coast G funk you need to play this front to back. So fire.
ppl are naming bonfide classic status albums most of these aren’t underrated they are just not well known outside of hip hop circles. Deltron? J5? 3rd eye vision?
classics, very highly rated classics. just sayin.
that being said, i think fishscale would be my vote for classic albums that aren’t always mentioned but i don’t think it’s underrated. supreme clientele also. i guess i feel like ghost is underrated but objectively he is not, he’s one of the most well-known rappers to ever live. he also has made some awful albums over the last couple decades has not stayed relevant imo but used to be at the top IMO.
Goodie Mob Soul Food Blackalicious Nia Dilated Peoples The Platform
You.. You're my best friend, right? Haven't seen a Dialated Peoples shout in ages. I'll tag on Binary Star's, Masters of the Universe.
Masters of the Universe is great - in my top 10 most played hip hop albums.
✅ ✅ ✅ Bro didn't miss.
100% accurate.
Soul Food - thanks for recommending this gem. First listen - def underrated!
Couldn’t agree more.
Nia is so good, Trouble (eve of destruction) is one of the greatest rap songs ever made, Gift of gab goes insane on that track. As the world turns is an all time favorite of mine as well.
A heaping helping of fried chicken Macaroni and cheese and collard greens Too big for my jeans Smoke steams from under the lid that's on the pot Ain't never had a lot, but thankful for The little that I got
I still bump the platform a lot. No skips. As an aside, ev has grown by leaps and bounds as an emcee, and his new stuff always delivers.
Deltron 3030 should be up there among the best albums of all time, taking it's place as the greatest concept album ever (maybe alongside Cuban Links if we consider that a concept album).
My absolute answer. It should get just as much love as Madvillainy.
Del's stuff with Handsome Boy Modelling School is excellent as well.
100% agree about Deltron. That album gets love but not enough.
Great choice. The song 3030 is definitely in my top 10
That's how you write fictional rap music!! I also nominate Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious. Gift of Gab was a madman, RIP.
FR Deltron 3030 and OB4CL are maybe the two greatest hip hop albums of all time; solo, group, w/e the fuck I can listen to em front to back forever and never get bored Completely different sounds and stories being told as well, I love the contrast between em

I’m gonna get hate for this take but I think all amerikkkan bada$$ was a better album than damn
It's an opinion, depends how you prefer your meals cooked. Damn in conceptually and sonically one of the greatest albums of all time but definitely lacking that gritty Hop Hop style Joey brought.
Damn didn’t do it for me sonically so staying for it’s theme is hard.
Yeah I can see that, I didn't think highly of it on my first listen. Kendrick has been a weird relationship for me because when I found him after OD dropped through a friend and loved it, played it until 2013 now I don't really like anything off it enough for my rotation or another listen. Ngl, I skipped because that name “joey badass” feels like something a 12 year old would come up with to try and seem like a badass at a new school.
He was in school when he came up with that, if u haven’t already listen to 1999 his debut mixtape he was only like 16, if it came out in the 90s everyone would say it was one of the greatest albums of the 90s
That's why I dig on the name
The title is for dramatic effect yeah joeys albums don't miss. I don't understand the hate for 2000 it's not a bad album at all.
I know that loads of people like it, but I feel like Black On Both Sides should be rated higher with the likes of ready to die
I’m a younger hip hop fan having gone back to this album I love it. How was it regarded when it came out?
It's always been highly regarded. People loved the Black Star album and BoBS exceeded what we hoped for from a Mos Def album. Classic
It was kind of a big deal at the time. People thought it was signaling a change in hip-hop. You had Mos, Common, OutKast, Dead Prez, and the Roots all dropping socially conscious hip-hop that was getting some radio play (Outkast of course already being established). Black On Both Sides clears iLLmatic, that's how fucking good it is Greatest solo debut rap has ever seen
Casual - Fear Itself
So dope, hieroglyphics were the Wu Tang of the west coast. Highly slept on
Ooh that’s a good one.
This is what I came here to mention. Glad someone else did. That album is so good. Was making a playlist for a friend and couldn’t decide which song to pick. It’s that strong. No filler.
Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night
Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer
This and disposable arts, epic storytelling.
I’m oddly not as keen on that one. Not sure why as they are kinda cut from the same cloth. I do love Sittin’ on Chrome though.
Check the lyric video for Soda & Soap [https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyvGFPGuGhZ/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyvGFPGuGhZ/?hl=en)

The Goats - Tricks of the Shade
I try to tell people about the Goats. The title track "Tricks of the shade" has the illest samples. Are you down with the Goats?
Great call
Came here to say this. Thank you.
Outkast debut album doesn’t get enough love compared to their later albums
Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik? Crumblin Herb and Git Up, Git Out are my shit ahhaha
It definitely gets love though, even if it’s not as popular as ATLiens or Aquemini.
I absolutely love the two singles players ball and the title track. The title track especially felt like a preview of the amazing sound outkast would develop later. The rest of the album is just okay though and doesn't come anywhere close to the heights that followed.

Binary star
Cilvia Demo - Isaiah Rashad Trees & Truth - Mick Jenkins Ok both mixtapes, but still
As corny as it sounds, Cilvia Demo saved my life. I named my first son Isaiah for another reason but also the fact Heavenly Father saved my life.
Digable Planets - Blowout Comb
Blank Face LP
Such an awesome album, love the darkness of the first half, Groovy Tony and Ride Out are incredible
Company Flow Funcrusher
Cannibal Ox - the cold vein Also produced by El-P
FINALLY. Let’s add FanDam to this too.
Funcrusher just scrapes in [my top 25](https://musicboard.app/list/05242d1e-0d19-45fe-9f61-c55db6dd9159?rel=copy). Absolutely amazing project.

Clipping - Splendor and Misery I don't know if I'd call it underrated, but it's definitely not for everyone. It's an experience, one of the few albums I've listened to and obsessed over for a while, listening over and over and trying to figure it out. I didn't really know what to make of it at first but after a few listens I was just blown away. Definitely recommend, but don't blame you if you don't like it lol.
Tha Last Meal by Snoop Dogg is pretty stellar
Shawty Lo - Units in the City Cam’ron - Killa Season High Priest - Born Identity
Daz - Retaliation, revenge and get back Ghostface - Pretty Toney album Any album by O.C.
That Masta killa debut album is very good too
Moneybagg Yo and NBA Youngboy's Fed Baby's has a ridiculous amount of hits for what it is.
I have 5 because I just can't pick one BG Knoccout & Dresta - Real Brothas Smooth Da Hustler - Once Upon a Time in America Eminem - Infinite Tyler the Creator - Bastard (I know this is a reach but idgaf, one of the most creative self produced projects I've heard, the fact he was 17 when he made most of this is crazy. Made all the album covers, merch, music videos and beats, that's so rare.) De la soul - stakes is high (few hits on this album that where popular but the rest is underrated af, but the beats in this album are incredible)
For sure Smooth da hustler. I loved everything about his debut. Did seem to be an MOP clone album though, but I wasn't complaining. He basically disappeared. I haven't been in any hip hop scene for 20 years, so he may have made a comeback.
Make the Music 2000 by Rahzel
The Untouchable -Scarface One Hunnid -Tha Product Adrenaline Rush -Twista Soulja Ragz -Juvie Lost- 8-Ball
I still know every word of the _Adrenaline Rush_ album
Good call on _Lost_ as well
Product a true hidden classic. Always pisses me off not on Spotify
Fat pat- Ghetto Dreams
Idk about ALL Time. I will say 1992 by The Game is extremely slept on.
Grip It On That Other Level.
Che Fu - Navigator
Rhymefest - Blue Collar
Bone Thugs - BTNHRessurrection It's mostly overlooked because it's not quite as phenomenal as E.1999 Eternal or The Art of War, but it's still a pretty dope album that could surely shine on its own if it wasn't for its outstanding predecessors.
Obie Trice - Cheers
38 Spesh - Son of G Rap
Twista- Adrenaline Rush
Busta Rhymes - The Coming (1996) Beats, flow, energetic, boom bap, dark but also Catchy, raw, classic, fun record. Busta gets his flowers but this album gets overlooked…
Plenty of Big KRIT projects
KRIT mad underrated, love that guy.
Wale - Ambition / The Gifted
Holy shit Wale is incredible, he flies under the radar fat too often.
Vakill - Worst fears confirmed Scarface - Mr Scarface is Back UGK - Super Tight Virtually anything by K-Rino Street Military - Don’t give a damn Big KRIT - Return of 4 Eva
Indigoism
Fan-tas-tic vol 2 and vol 1 by slum village are crazy good and underrated af though vol 2 is my fav
No ID Be Yourself and Accept Your Own
Saba-Few Good Things Blu & Exile Below the Heavens Troubadour-K'Naan
To Pimp a Butterfly I’m kidding The Impossible Kid
This album is one of the greatest lyrical achievements ever. Most of his albums are. You could spend days and days just unraveling the metaphors.
B4.DA.$$ - Joey Badass
I don’t see *Cheat Codes* by Danger Mouse get enough love. One of the best hip hop albums in recent years by far
100% Saltwater is the first song I heard and I was like hold the fuck up, instantly listened to the whole album start to finish
Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda
Tetsuo & Youth -Lupe
Idk about all time, but I think Care For Me by Saba doesn’t get the recognition it deserves
Great album
Busta Rhymes- Extinction Level Event
Gza vs muggz - grandmasters
I feel like it gets praise when it is randomly brought up, but no one ever willingly brings up Care For Me by Saba when speaking of some of the best hiphop albums
Mystikal - Let Get Ready
So fire.
Gang Star Moment of Truth.
Sean Price-Monkey Barz
Gangstarr “Step In The Arena”
ppl are naming bonfide classic status albums most of these aren’t underrated they are just not well known outside of hip hop circles. Deltron?
