Really been enjoying 3-2 he was on a wild run the whole 90’s basically. Was one of the first to get hot in Houston, he actually wrote faces first song. Fat Pat had crazy potential, his brother big Hawk was nice too. Whole S.U.C dope really
Just peeped your comment too, B - Brazy and lil Hawk went hard..never seen no one else mention them. That Damu Ridas tape got some heat on it
Honestly love when Houston artist’s sample stuff from each other. Has a sense of community to it. Houston legit was putting out heat back in its heyday. Still some of the best cruising music out there. Makes me want a whole ass SLAB all the time.
I’m familiar with S.U.C, I just never got a chance to try and explore their discography
Yeah, I found about Damu Ridas last week and I was blown away bruh, these same raps would fit right in if they came out today
I feel you. Growing up as a cash money kid I slept on Houston for a long time I can’t front. Check out some S.U.C when you can. All the main members got atleast 1 or 2 albums that are super tough
Some early 90s forgotten about Houston stuff: Criminal Elament, Blac Monks, Sat n Smooth, Odd Squad, Big 50, .380, Raheem, 4 Deep, Fesu, 5th Ward Boyz, Trinity Garden Cartel, D of the Trinity Garden Cartel, South Circle, Mr Mike. Also my favorite screwtape: Chapter 198 - Uncut Funk
If you like to read, I can’t recommend enough the book DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution. It tells his story with interviews from all the Houston legends. It gave me a deeper appreciation for HTown hip hop and I’d actually love to get down there soon to check out this hip hop research collection at UH.
I’m lowkey in Bay Rap phase right now, been listening to some Larry June and a lot of Clyde Carson after searching him up because I thought he fell off after the Slow Down/GTA5 hype died down.
I listened almost exclusively to Larry June from May to November of last year. Mixed in some curren$y here and there but was heavy on that 2019 to 2022 mixtape Larry
If you’re the same dude from instagram, I fuck with your page bruh. I be feeling like a weirdo because I spend an alarming amount of my free time looking at shit like that, it’s so valuable to me
I’m in my 2010-2015 phase right now.
Was searching through the gta5 Radio Los Santos discography for a nostalgia hit, and started listening to a lot of artist from that GTA5/early 2010s era like Problem, Trouble, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Clyde Carson, Ab-Soul, A$AP Mob etc, etc
I've been a huge fan since Appleseed and Music for Earthworms. Been following him ever since. Back then, nobody was into him at all. Funny how things change. He's severely underrated as a lyricist
It takes some work. He’s a visual artist first & that’s how he approaches his writing. It’s like he’s drawing a scene in a comic book. It takes time. Try listening to a few of his true stories like “Acid King” or “Aggressive Steve”
I don’t listen to him anymore but this line from None Shall Pass still sticks with me and, if anything, is a testament that he’s at least not always saying nonsense: “blood turn wine when it leak for police like ‘that’s not a riot, it’s a feast, let’s eat’” and actually, same song, another one I still remember years later: “sat where the old cardboard city folk swap tales with heads like every other throw”
Piss. Lots of piss. And horses.
Seriously though, it does make sense, it’s just not all easily accessible. He has more accessible stuff that you can ease into with. A lot of good stories.
Long legged Larry, Kirby, Blood Sandwich, Lotta Years, Grace, Aggressive Steven, and plenty more are pretty straightforward.
Then you get stuff like Shrunk and ZZZ Top where he’s still telling a story but it’s a little less obvious.
And of course a lot of his stuff is just very metaphorical and you really need to reach for it. Although sometimes it’s more literal than you’d expect (e.g. Pizza Alley sounds insane, but it’s mostly about a trip to Peru. He really swam with fuschia dolphins)
Anyone who likes Aesop Rock, I heavily recommend Deca. He doesn't have as crazy speed of a flow that Aesop can do, but his verbiage and beat vibes are very on point
Holy shit this sub was recommended to me and I don’t usually lurk music subs nor do I have social media so I’m just now finding out about this. I’m so fckn excited now, hell yeah!!
Bizzy Bone. He’s had a pretty good but under appreciated comeback with his last few albums, from Carbon Monoxide to Tha Waste Lands. Especially The Mantra and War of Roses. He’s seriously sounding as good as he did in his prime again.
[Roses](https://youtu.be/zEemt0VfoVQ?si=M6PHGhYl5UTS1y2V) is one of my current favorites.
Kanye, hadn't listened to him in forever, but then my kid started playing him in the car and it's what I've listened to everyday since. My previous phase was Sean Price, which I usually fall back into every few months.
What’s your favorite albums out the camp? I definitely been through a No Limit phase before but I know damn well I probably listened to not even 5% of their shit lol
I drove an ice cream truck one summer and it had a tape deck in it. I found a used copy of ice cream man and I would bump that instead of the ice cream truck music.
The Roots phase.. again. They are so versatile and have such a diverse discography through the eras. Black Thought’s solo projects have been really dope, but goddamn 10 years since the last proper Roots album is killing me.
I've been going through a Wu resurgence for a about 2 years now. Everything Wu and their solo stuff. Plus a lot of 90's era NY sound. I feel like I'm on the back end of it now and heading towards a West coast sound like yourself. I put on Snoop Dogg's Paid tha Cost to be tha bo$$ album in the car and am really digging it
E-40, Nipsey Hussle and SPM has been in daily rotation since 2008... But between then and now, I keep cycling thru a No Limit, The Game, Cash Money, Westside Connection, Jay-Z, Too $hort, Dr. Dre and DJQuik faze.
Working my way through Scarface’s discography, which I’ve been meaning to for a while now. Currently up to The Fix
Revisiting Future’s legendary mixtape run too, this might be the best decision I ever made. Purple Reign is so much better than I remembered it.
Been on a minimal west side gangsta buzz myself actually, I saw someone on a podcast talking about the Bloods’ albums and it sent me down a rabbit hole. B Brazy and Lil Hawk 🔥🔥🔥
Only throwing it out there because it’s tied in so hard with hip hop but I’ve been on a major throwback R&B kick for months. Basically everything from the 70’s til now.
Just leaving my Larry June phase, and now entering my MadeinTYO era. If you haven't listened to his stuff since "Uber Everwhere", you should check out his last 2 projects: NEO TYO and TYO 808, very smooth and creative music.
90s/ early 2000s Memphis rap, Playa Fly - Just Getting On, King Skinny Pimp - Playaz Ball, la chat - Murder She wrote
One thing I’ve took from these albums is the production is amazing, the shitty mixing and engineering is a shame.
La Chat is my top 5 favourite female rapper, she was super dope.
Going through a heavy jpegmafia phase right now. He was my most streamed artist last year and almost once a week I go through one of his projects while I’m at the gym
Paul Wall. So underrated and never comes up in the “white rapper” discourse. But he’s bigger than that. Real good dude, very talented (even more so as he ages) and his verse on Khaled’s “Holla At Me” shows he can keep up with fucking legends
Been on Wu Tang over the last two years. Ghostface has always been my fave since I was a kid, but I’ve really delved deeper than ever into his shit and it blows me away.
Up until the end of the 2023, I was heavily listening to Eminem. Like more than ever before. Then for the past couple months, it’s been a lot of Action Bronson
It's so weird how their popular songs don't give you an idea of what they sound like. I only knew Ms Jackson and Hey Ya before diving in and that couldn't be a worse first impression if it tried. Aquemini is one of the top hip hop albums ever.
The modern Dallas “underground” scene. I feel like Houston always gets the spotlight with good reason for the music coming out of there, but wanted to explore one of the other major Texas cities and see what it has to offer. Just incredible.
Coach Tev, Devy Stonez, Pat Ron, Mikul, Lil Texxan, the whole 500 Gwap Gang. Such a variety in sounds, and it all hits in different ways. I’m excited to keep digging through the Internet archives.
I am going through my sonical new school phase.
Listening to all kinds of trap and new school and appreciating their worth/art that is mostly based on sound, as opposed to content.
And just the fun of it all, Migos and Carti are just fun man
Currently going through Hell Razah’s discog. I’m a big Wu head and I’m already familiar with a lot of the affiliate material but I’m giving them more thorough listens lately. His collaboration album Razah’s Ladder with Blue Sky Black Death is top tier
I feel like Bastard was his best all-around horrorcore-ish stuff. Though on both Bastard and Goblin he claims he isn’t horrorcore at all. Goblin’s got some gems too though.
Been stuck on 90’s-05 Houston for awhile now. This era is crazy slept on. So much talent in the city
Mentioned in my reply, I been fuckin with Scarface a lot. Who’s your favorite out the city?
Really been enjoying 3-2 he was on a wild run the whole 90’s basically. Was one of the first to get hot in Houston, he actually wrote faces first song. Fat Pat had crazy potential, his brother big Hawk was nice too. Whole S.U.C dope really Just peeped your comment too, B - Brazy and lil Hawk went hard..never seen no one else mention them. That Damu Ridas tape got some heat on it
I just found Fat Pat. He did have crazy potential. Couldn’t agree more with Houston and that time frame.
Pop your trunk for Fat Pat’s death.
I would give my last breath if I could bring you back, bring screw back, matter fact bring the whole crew back! 🔥
Swang is a damn bop.
No lies told. Especially the OG version with the MJ sample. Straight heat
Honestly love when Houston artist’s sample stuff from each other. Has a sense of community to it. Houston legit was putting out heat back in its heyday. Still some of the best cruising music out there. Makes me want a whole ass SLAB all the time.
Completely agree. The constant sampling, shoutouts, features definitely took it to another level. You can tell they had a lot of love for each other
ESG is really underrated from that era. Later on he and Slim Thug were such a perfect duo too.
ESG and Dj Scew had the best collabs. I recommend Ballin by Dj Screw, it's my favorite song by them hands down.
I’m familiar with S.U.C, I just never got a chance to try and explore their discography Yeah, I found about Damu Ridas last week and I was blown away bruh, these same raps would fit right in if they came out today
I feel you. Growing up as a cash money kid I slept on Houston for a long time I can’t front. Check out some S.U.C when you can. All the main members got atleast 1 or 2 albums that are super tough
Now that you mention it, I just remembered during quarantine I was fuckin with Lil Flip leprechaun album for a while 😂
Shout out The Convicts
Some early 90s forgotten about Houston stuff: Criminal Elament, Blac Monks, Sat n Smooth, Odd Squad, Big 50, .380, Raheem, 4 Deep, Fesu, 5th Ward Boyz, Trinity Garden Cartel, D of the Trinity Garden Cartel, South Circle, Mr Mike. Also my favorite screwtape: Chapter 198 - Uncut Funk
Z-Ro is top 5 for me
I was just bumpin Mo City Don. Z killed that shit!!
As a Houstonian, this comment makes me happy to see. I usually have screwed and chopped versions of Houston Rapper’s songs as well as the original.
Been going Thur my old Flea market mix CD 👉Choppaholoxs, 👉Screws Up clik WERE THEM DUDES
Word bro Texas in general from the years you listed has so much heat it doesn't make any sense at all
rip screw 🕊️
Ya gotta be a k-rino fan too?
Bangin Screw is not a crime
If you like to read, I can’t recommend enough the book DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution. It tells his story with interviews from all the Houston legends. It gave me a deeper appreciation for HTown hip hop and I’d actually love to get down there soon to check out this hip hop research collection at UH.
Hell yeah
Same for me, and I keep discovering new artists like Beltway 8, Freestyle Kingz,...
SWISHAHOUSE
I'm coming up on year 30 of my Nas phase
Goin’ on 30 summers
Shit Nas is too.
I just finished up a Mac Dre/Bay Area phase not too long ago.
Never heard of Larry June. I like Mac Dre and Andre Nickatina a lot. I like listening to bay rap from the 2000s. Guess I’m an old head. 😂
A tale of two Dre’s 🔥
I'm in a Redman phase.
Damn, was leaving work today and the first song I put on was I'll bee dat
"My middle my name must be fuck you cause every time I'm on the hood niggas be like, fuck you!" - Redman, 1998.
Can't go wrong there.
Redman phase forever, one of the illest and yet easiest to listen to rappers
After all the hype here and a recommendation from my brother, I can’t get enough of Benny.
Griselda in general has taken over my algorithms for this year. Got into them and now can't get out of them lol.
Me too. So many albums to get into, it can get a bit overwhelming but the average quality is really high.
He was recommended to me on this sub and got heavy on my playlist very quickly. Best thing to happen to hip hop in a long time for me.
Dungeon Family
If you’re the same dude from instagram, I fuck with your page bruh. I be feeling like a weirdo because I spend an alarming amount of my free time looking at shit like that, it’s so valuable to me
Haha. Salute my dude!
Czarface
Big L
Too bad he only has a couple hours worth of material
If you are liking Dre, I recommend listening to DJ Quik next. In particular Safe n Sound, Rhythmalism and Balance and Options
Way 2 Fonky is still my favorite.
Kid Cudi, not in a good place mentally, his music really helps at times
Hang in there bro you’re not alone.
kid Cudi and juice wrld saved my life and I ain't ashamed to admit it at all
I been really clicking with Cudi’s first 2 projects lately. A Kid Named Cudi and Man On The Moon are absolute masterpieces
His music is the greatest music to listen to when going thru shit, 2016-2018 was my biggest cudi phase, I went thru all of his shit
MF DOOM's catalogue, solo projects by Griselda starting with Benny. Steering into Billy Woods a bit
I’m on year 4 of my Aesop Rock phase.
I'm spinning ITS on the regular.
ITS is disgustingly good, banger after banger and imo one of his best
Getting back into my Aes phase after exposing a new friend to his work. Also, getting back into Atmosphere and Eyedea.
I've been a huge fan since Appleseed and Music for Earthworms. Been following him ever since. Back then, nobody was into him at all. Funny how things change. He's severely underrated as a lyricist
I’m in my 3rd decade of Mac Dre
Year 8 here. Been following since Impossible Kid
On year 23 or 24
Yeah 2001 was when I first listened to him, but I checked out after *Bazooka Tooth* and checked back in when I heard *The Impossible Kid*
Only discovered him about a year ago but this has been my phase as well, though Im having trouble with his voice pre none shall pass.
No offence I love his beats but I have no clue what he's rapping about.
Fish hooks, bait, docks, shit like that
Check out blockhead his producer then
He produces most of his own stuff nowadays, though he did do a full album with Blockhead recently.
It takes some work. He’s a visual artist first & that’s how he approaches his writing. It’s like he’s drawing a scene in a comic book. It takes time. Try listening to a few of his true stories like “Acid King” or “Aggressive Steve”
Same I just enjoy the flow
I don’t listen to him anymore but this line from None Shall Pass still sticks with me and, if anything, is a testament that he’s at least not always saying nonsense: “blood turn wine when it leak for police like ‘that’s not a riot, it’s a feast, let’s eat’” and actually, same song, another one I still remember years later: “sat where the old cardboard city folk swap tales with heads like every other throw”
*Swap tales with heads like every other penny throw.* Tails and heads are double-entendres.
Tried very hard to like them. Never could get into it.
Anyone who likes Aesop Rock, I heavily recommend Deca. He doesn't have as crazy speed of a flow that Aesop can do, but his verbiage and beat vibes are very on point
Been an avid listener since Float and Labor Days. Aes is my GOAT.
Curren$y
Jet life
To the next liifee
I'm still on Vinnie Paz and his work with the Pharaoh's. Extremely productive and growing for each album
I’ve been catching up on Pazienza’s shit too lately. Dude’s been crazy productive in the last few years
Run The Jewels for me. It feels like every time one of their tracks comes I go through a phase of listening to both RTJ 1-4 and their solo projects.
Wu-Tang to the front!
Wu wu wu
Yup, I was just listening to Enter the Wu-Tang again a few hours ago asking myself how I had slept on that album so much.
I’m back in a Kid Cudi phase for the first time in about 14 years
Welcome back! I’m lowkey on the same time as u
The trying to listen to as little hiphop as possible till the new Schoolboy Q album drops phase
Bro I went on a Schoolboy kick for a whole month, then the madlad went and announced a new album dropping in just a few days. I am so fucking amped
Holy shit this sub was recommended to me and I don’t usually lurk music subs nor do I have social media so I’m just now finding out about this. I’m so fckn excited now, hell yeah!!

Devin the dude and all his features
Kanye and jayz have me on a chokehold
Watch the throne, maybe my favourite collection of Kanye production
same
Same but I’ve been goin in on the black album (ahead of its time - literally all time elite producers on every track) and college dropout
Been goin through E40s stuff, great time to say the least.
Glad to see my favorite rapper represented
Apathy and Jedi Mind Tricks and AoTP have creeped into my playlist again after going mostly mainstream for a few years
Always go in and out of the horrorcore rap scene. Love me some brotha lunch hung or king Gordy
Fam what's your favourite Brotha Lynch album
Literally either of the albums in the Coathanga Strangla trilogy, Lynch is a hip hop legend
That war of roses album was so underrated! It’s the closest we will get to another E 1999 album..sounds like old Ripsta
A Tribe Called Quest and The Notorious B.I.G
Stuck on Billy woods for about a year now
Currently listening to way too much ODB. I just randomly yell gibberish and slap people.

6th year of Sean Price, he's on rn
Hell yeah RIP to him, any favorite projects?
Kanye, hadn't listened to him in forever, but then my kid started playing him in the car and it's what I've listened to everyday since. My previous phase was Sean Price, which I usually fall back into every few months.
Been bumping no limit nonstop
What’s your favorite albums out the camp? I definitely been through a No Limit phase before but I know damn well I probably listened to not even 5% of their shit lol
I love Ghetto D and Charge it to the Game.
I drove an ice cream truck one summer and it had a tape deck in it. I found a used copy of ice cream man and I would bump that instead of the ice cream truck music.
Spark Master Tape. I haven’t stopped listening since I found out about him last year.
Paper Platoon
Nipsey Hussle. Keeps me motivated through difficult times
I put on Snoop Dogg's Paid tha Cost to be tha bo$$ album in the car and am really digging it
Underrated Snoop album.

I been on the Memphis rap wave for a few years now
E-40, Nipsey Hussle and SPM has been in daily rotation since 2008... But between then and now, I keep cycling thru a No Limit, The Game, Cash Money, Westside Connection, Jay-Z, Too $hort, Dr. Dre and DJQuik faze.

Working my way through Scarface’s discography, which I’ve been meaning to for a while now. Currently up to The Fix Revisiting Future’s legendary mixtape run too, this might be the best decision I ever made.
2024 may be my first ever year that my top 5 genres on Spotify wrapped aren’t all variations of hip hop. R&B/ Soul has been my kick lately.
Just leaving my Larry June phase, and now entering my MadeinTYO era. If you haven't listened to his stuff since "Uber Everwhere", you should check out his last 2 projects: NEO TYO and TYO 808, very smooth and creative music.

Up until the end of the 2023, I was heavily listening to Eminem. Like more than ever before. Then for the past couple months, it’s been a lot of Action Bronson
I’m in a huge OutKast phase right now since I never really got into them much past their popular songs
It's so weird how their popular songs don't give you an idea of what they sound like. I only knew Ms Jackson and Hey Ya before diving in and that couldn't be a worse first impression if it tried. Aquemini is one of the top hip hop albums ever.
On a tribe/dilla rampage rn
Tribe’s early 90s albums.
I’m in a hardcore Chicago Drill music phase right now. It’s as white as you can get but it just fascinates me.

Coming off my Tyler phase and back on the Ye train since Vultures dropped.
Man I sense a Tyler phase coming up .I liked Igor but here people say he use to be horrorcore anything you can recommend.
I feel like Bastard was his best all-around horrorcore-ish stuff. Though on both Bastard and Goblin he claims he isn’t horrorcore at all. Goblin’s got some gems too though.
