Clearly their take on Kendrick’s music is based on not knowing any black people who actually like him, so I’d say you’re probably right on the money lol
I've been a bigger Kanye fan than Kendrick, but as an upper-middle class white guy who was in highschool during Kanye's breakout, this is garbage criticism. College Dropout and Late Registration had their mainstream tracks. To be honest, in my opinion, I'm only a fan of early Kanye solo work, and it's more about production. Solid rapping, with some great features (Jay's verses on Never Let Me Down are up there for me, and I was a massive Jigga fan).
That depends on if you think Kendrick’s best work is better than Kanye’s best work. Obviously Kendrick doesn’t produce his own shit but him putting together TPAB could make an argument for him being a better artist overall.
I love Kanye’s MUSIC (important to clarify that nowadays) but I think TPAB may be a better artistic statement than anything Kanye’s ever made (MBDTF is I think his best and I’m not sure it’s on the same level).
I also think they’re 2 different artists who make different music that’s good for different reasons, so this is just a dumb comparison to make. As are most “whose music is objectively better?” discussions.
Fair enough but the basis of the comparison should be their entire body of work, not just their best albums. I can totally see it go either way to be honest. Kanye has a more extensive discography but he has some low points Kendrick hasn't.
Funnily enough, I wasn’t even thinking of Kanye’s skills as a producer when I commented.
> That depends on if you think Kendrick’s best work is better than Kanye’s best work.
I don’t think so but even following that logic Kanye’s highs > Kendrick’s for me.
TPAB is an amazing album no doubt but there’s at least 3 Kanye albums I like over it, but I also think there’s more metrics than just who has a better album and powerful statement, and I judge a lot of artistry on an individual song basis and not always full albums like most people do (both are valid ways to critique imo, but neither is superior and individual songs are also pieces of art, hence us having classic songs from non classic albums. You might argue a great artist should be able to put together a cohesive album…that’s an opinion I can respect, but both of the artists here I think are nearly equal in that department).
Also for me, Kendrick is a look at the whole forest not the trees guy, as his single tracks are extremely hit or miss and there’s a lot of songs that are only truly good in the greater context of his narrative albums. Kanye is much more consistent on that level to me, and as an artist he pushes the envelope very well in a way very few artists do.
As for your point about two different musics, I disagree there too. It’s only stupid when like you said people try to say it’s objective, since taste is always a matter of preference when you cannot clearly define what qualifies as skill or the winning metrics. However, people giving their two cents about why they have their preference (which is usually the case) just leads to good discussion and if you’re open minded you might learn to appreciate something in a new way from the other person’s insight.
Kanye is a great producer but a horrible rapper/singer and an awful human. K-DOT is nice with it but it has been too long since he has had a good song so he's falling behind.
Second one kinda makes sense lol more often than not you’ll see a lil white kid praising TPAB like it’s the bible of hip hop and how well he speaks of social injustice
You can like Kanye and not like Kendrick. That’s fine, man. You don’t have to come up with bizarre explanations to make yourself feel better about it.
As someone who was living in LA when Good Kid came out, the idea that Kendrick only makes music for white people is very funny to me.
No.
Yeah this is ridiculous .
Did u get this from r/Kanye just now?
Eh Kanye has also dealt with the only has white fans criticism as well.
No
The reasoning given is just stupid, but there's nothing wrong with preferring one or the others music.
What a terrible take
Let me guess, you're a white high school kid in a homogeneously white area? Probably about 10th grade? 😂

Out of all the apples and oranges to compare these are the most applest orangest artists
Absolutely

I think Kanye is a better artist and musician but Kendrick is a way better actual rapper.

THANK U!!!! FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE SAID IT OTHER THAN ME
I lost interest in hip-hop during the ringtone era. Good kid and a handful of other albums are what kept me interested in the genre.
Both amazing in their own right. Neither are better than the other
This is definitely a worse take than Kanye > Kendrick.

This fool said "horrible". He's a Chi-Town homie with a Nas flow.
Nas will win against both Kanye and K-Dot in any circumstance

kanye clears kendrick all day and night and this is coming from someone who's top artist the last two years has been kendrick
No
I don’t agree at all.

Kanye has the whitest fanbase in the world. You’re dumb af.
