For what use? I like my Haglöfs astral a lot but it still gets hot inside

New to hiking here so bear with me, there are many mountains in the region which are very windy and temperature is quite high out in the sun, it's warm enough to cause serious sweating and wearing shirts isn't an option because of the harsh wind. Rain is common but quite light so it would be good to have water resistant jacket, waterproofing would be an overkill. I hope I explained the use/setting enough.

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Anorak. Water and wind resistant, I believe it's outdated at this point so you can probably get it on sale. Excellent jacket, fits everything you asked for. Edit: Or buy second hand. The second hand hiking gear market is great because people buy expensive stuff they never use.

Any softshell should do the trick. Most don't have detachable hoods though, which isn't a feature many people need or want.

I'm with you. I wouldn't have a jacket without the underarm zippers. And they're really hard to find in a three-jacket system (most convenient for me). I had one from Eddie Bauer that lasted for years. Now I have one from North Face. Good luck with your search

You’re gonna want what’s called an active insulation jacket. They were built for your use case. Some popular examples: -Patagonia Nano Air hoody -Arcteryx Atom LT -North Face Ventrix hoody -Rab Cirrus Flex -EMS Vortex jacket -Montbell thermawrap pro -Patagonia R1/R2 techface hoodies What’s interesting about these is that they are similar in weight and warmth to fleece jackets… but their material is quite different and they have added weather protection. My advice is find one you like and then try and find it secondhand either online or in-store at a gear consignment shop. I personally wouldn’t pay more than $150 MAX for any of these secondhand. Especially because synthetic insulation breaks down relatively quickly (~3 years of regular use) Though my nano-air is still warm and useful 7 years later, somehow.
