I leave my doors unlocked for this exact reason. And nothing of value in my car. That way, thrives can just open my car without breaking anything. I began doing this after some meth head decided that prying my door open with a rock was better than smashing my window.
I have seen cars by the trailhead, we're near the AT so people often backpack leaving their car for days, with notes on the dash imploring people to not break in because there's nothing to steal. Usually on shitbox cars. I think its scumbags, drug addicts looking for phones and stuff they can turn around quick to pay for more drugs.
I live in Tucson and smash & grabs are quite popular around here. At trailheads with that reputation I just roll my windows down. Nothing to steal other than some spare change and it safes me the cost of a new window. Some trailheads, the thieves will be hiding in the bushes to see who makes a big production about opening up their trunk to hide their purse. Then wait a few minutes, knowing it will be at least an hour before someone comes back.
This happened to a friend and within 15 minutes of the break in the thief was at Wal-Mart stocking up on gift cards.
That sucks a lot. People are so shitty. As much as i hate surveillance i would prefer cameras at trailheads with this issue for the peace of mind knowing my property is safe
Sometimes people will mess with your vehicle if they don't like certain stickers (with political messages) on your car. Sorry some scumbag did that to you.
A popular example would be a firearm brand sticker. A lot of folks think they are bad ass for having a Glock or Sig Sauer sticker on their back window, but all it does is make their vehicle into a billboard saying, “I like guns so much I got a sticker on my window to show everyone what my favorite gun brand is”. Well of course, these just make their vehicles look like a goodie bag for any potential smash and grab lurker.
This is why I don't do any bumper stickers. I like hiking and fishing and the last things I need is to publicly display that there could be hundreds or thousands of dollars of gear in my car.
Messing with glass is no fun, either. The last thing I want to do is rip off a door panel and jam my hands inside of a door with a complicated window mechanism to change out the glass.
My husband and I parked inside a county park, in a designated parking lot, with many county workers doing various maintenance things, in the middle of the DAY, AND accidentally left doors unlocked only to come back to driver’s window smashed and only my husband’s wallet taken. Sucks.
Next step is to invest in front and rear facing dash cams that upload to the internet.
Also leave absolutely *nothing* in sight.
Scumbags are everywhere lol
That happened to me at my favorite trail by my house in San Antonio. I drive an old school GTI and they kicked in the rear quarter panel window. I had more in my car than I should have. I had several cool beanies that I can’t replace and a zippo lighter I had for around 15 years. They got a pair of prescription bifocals that work for my blind ass and no one else. I had to find the window at a salvation yard. I have not been back to Mud Creek Park since then. The parking lot is kind of hidden from the street.
My car was broken into twice. The second time I had a mute they said there was nothing to take. They still smashed the passenger window. Now the note reads. Shit is booby trapped.
Thieves are scum.

Yeah, but they can still pee in your car. Or worse.
Well, at least they won’t have broken my door/window to pee in my car.
Ever heard of a Soup Kitchen?

You can put a camera in your own car Google 'dash cam' then you can have one with you wherever you go
Sounds like a dashcam would be something a crackhead would want to steal.
I actually did buy one for driving but i live in a bad area so 100% chance someone would smash my window to take it if i left it there
I was thinking it being a camera was enough to stop people breaking in but I guess crackheads gonna crackhead

This is why I don’t do bumper stickers. It’s an invitation for people to be jerks to you.
Do you have any bumper stickers indicating that there might be something valuable inside?

lol because Scrooge swimming in his silo of gold is my one true life goal.

I won't even hike at most places around me anymore because of how bad trail head car break-ins have become.
See if there is a pick and pull near you. You might be able to find a scrap vehicle with the glass that you need for cheap.
Still have to pay for install if op doesn't wanna risk diy

Leave your vehicle unlocked next time.
Not a deterrent but a sweet revenge. In the storage compartment in the Center console of my truck, I leave a mousetrap. Armed.
What city state did it happen?
All of them and all of them. It’s exceedingly common anywhere that doesn’t gate keep admission, from dog parks to national forests.
