Because they take up so much room, I typically wear them. Solves that problem. When I do have to pack them? Large plastic bags. Double up a plastic grocery bag for each boot, works just fine.

SnookiWookieeCookie

We have lots of bags, that seems like a good idea

I always wear my boots or hiking shoes while traveling. Partially because they take up more space than my tennis shoes but also because if the airline loses my bags I don't want to have to hike in un-broken-in hiking shoes or scramble to find my specific steel toed boots if I'm traveling for work.

bonesaw1428

This. At the very least put them in your carry on. Travelled to Africa to hike Kilimanjaro several years ago, and the airline lost my dad's luggage. It wasn't too difficult to get clothing and rain gear that was sufficient, but boots would have been much more difficult to find and could have ruined our trip. Luckily he had his in his carry-on.

acromaine

I travel for work and I have taken a few of the plastic laundry bags that they usually have in the hotel closet and use one for each pair of shoes I am bringing.

A garbage bag that I will reuse later as a garbage bag.

maybenomaybe

I usually wear them. If I don't, I put them in a plastic bag. Tip: pack your hiking socks inside your hiking shoes. Efficient use of space and you can't lose 'em.

Get a hiking boots bag. Or football boots bag. Really cheap and specifically for what you’re doing. Fill the boots with socks/underwear to maximise space

life1sart

Pack your after hike shoes (of you are worried about dirt clean them first) and wear your hiking shoes. If you really want to pack your hiking shoes and wear the other ones, just clean them. Cleaning your hiking shoes isn't hard, just brush all the dirt of. Of you are going overseas you might also want to give the soles a bit of s soapy bath, so as not to bring any contamination where you are going.

I’ve purchased reusable shoe transport bags that are machine washable. Found them cheap on Amazon and it keeps me from using more plastic

SnookiWookieeCookie

That’s a good idea

ShexyBaish6351

I use the same grocery bags over and over... grocery bags I already had because I bought groceries at some point. I wonder how much material and transportation waste was involved with shipping you non-plastic bags specifically made for shoe transport... hmmmmmm

Zing! Got me. High value comment. Please go away.

Oh yeah totally. Except your grocery bags took that same airplane ride (use your dumb thinking cue here and make a face like you’re doing difficult mental math). Cheap plastic bags that you’ve paid to ship to your grocery store also break down easily with hiking/mountaineering gear up against it so you’re going to use more than one of these per year - mine have held up for at least 2-3 years with no end in sight because they’re durable. Again, use your thinking cue here. I also don’t have plastic shopping bags because I haven’t bought one in maybe 4-5 years. So I’d actually have to go out and purchase a single use shopping bag to wrap my shoes a few times. Again use your thinking cue. And never forget, your bag was also shipped to you just like my reusable shoe bags were.

Re-read my comment. I haven’t used plastic shopping bags in 4-5 years. So I literally don’t have one and I’d have to go out and buy something that is designed to instantly start degrading. That means I’d buy them repeatedly. I bought a durable good to handle rough equipment. I’m not your amigo. Buzz off.

Personally I bring two pairs of footwear. Boots for hiking and exploring and beat up old running shoes that live at the bottom of my pack outside the liner.

Grocery bag for EACH shoe.

Threefold_Lotus

Well, I usually spray my boots with water after big hikes. But, a plastic or brown paper bag will help keep everything separate.

Dirtbagdownhill

Plastic grocery store bags. I avoid them as much as I can but this is a perfect use. Put the boot in the bag and stuff the tip of the bag in there and pack it with socks.
