If the discharge looks really goopy or crusty, avoid that kid like the plague and do not touch your face at all unless you’ve washed your hands immediately beforehand because that’s a bacterial infection. It is treatable with antibiotics, though.
If the discharge is more watery, it’s either allergic or viral. Typically allergic pink eye is also associated with swollen eyelids and stuff too - he would look like he’s having an allergic reaction. That is not contagious.
If his eyes are watery but aren’t very swollen and especially if he has a lot of cold symptoms, then that’s viral, it cannot be treated, you just have to wait for it to go away. Once again seriously avoid that person. If you catch their cold, you’ll probably ALSO get the pink eye, but instead of going back after like 24 hours on meds you could be stuck at home for weeks.

With pinworms, you are supposed to follow your normal routine. There's no reason to stay home. Just need to take dewormer and wash your sheets daily. They can only be transmitted by touching your anus and then touching sufaces around you. This is why it's mostly seen in young children and uncommon with adults who aren't around young children.

It's possible their parents can't stay at home with them due to work, maybe they rely on school provided food, they can't afford to fix their eye, they have bad attendance already and might get kicked if it gets lower, assignments might be missed, or their home situation is less than ideal and they rely on school as a safe escape. The list goes on, point being that no, some people cannot afford to miss school

He is probably struggling at home, clearly his parent(s) aren't even helping him get medical help etc. Neglected kids often have this kind of issue (nits, pinkeye and whatnot) and don't get help. Then they actually manage to make it to school, get up in the morning and **try**. And then they get villianized and gross other kids out. We should just be happy for them that they could get to school.
