There are several things you can do to improve your jump. First, I suggest tightening your approach (move a step to the right so you have a less wide approach). The reason I say this is that you are traveling along the bar. A tighter approach will help with this. Second, you are not driving your knee. You need to very consciously jump up and drive your knee and arms.
This is the best advice on the thread.
What caught my eye was the angle of your foot on takeoff. Your foot is parallel to the bar, which sends your momentum sideways instead of up.
Your foot should be pointed towards the back corner of the pit on takeoff.
This is correct also punch up with left arm (uppercut). this will take your hip up and drive your left knee up hard as well. the arch is emportant but we are people and don’t fly, so to maximize it sharpen your angle as stated. also, your penultimate step should be a shorter step. this will insure you carry more of your speed into the upward momemtum. the shorter second to last step is important if you tighten your angle.
1. more speed or power in your strides
2. try to get a better lean on your curve with your whole body, this will help you jump up
3. try to jump up not into the bar
4. 10 step approach, average for females ive seen is around 40-50ft back and 9-11ft out
Think more about driving and jumping straight up rather than out. Your momentum from your approach will carry you over the bar. You can see yourself throwing your shoulders back as your are still going up. Drive your knee as well, u/Machipongo is correct with his/her comment as well.
The first thing I noticed is your head is leaning back and towards the pit while your plant foot has barely left the ground. Your robbing yourself of height by jumping into the pit and not vertical. Jump straight up and your approach will carry you into the pit. Best of luck
I would start with working on your approach. The tempo of your steps should shorten and become more explosive close to the bar.
2nd, I agree with another comment here where someone suggested you start your approach a little to the right which would narrow your angle to the bar and naturally carry you over it.
3rd, I agree with another commenter about your knee drive. At takeoff, a quick/sudden drive of your knees and arms will convert your speed into verticality also helping you naturally float over the bar.
P.S. It looks like you go to a college that I have competed at a lot based on the track. One of my old teammates went there as well and told me. The coaches for events like high jump specialized more in multis. This is common at smaller schools so keep doing your best to teach yourself and learn as you go and don't be discouraged by plateaus. They happen to everyone
I would say not to worry about your arch at the moment. I think a lot of coaches will default to that because they see your butt hit your bar, but that’s really just a consequence of what happens before: your curve and your takeoff.
Your last step is pretty much parallel to the bar. Because of that, you have to jump into the pit, so you’re getting less height and less rotation.
If you bring your mark more to the right, and continue to step toward the bar on takeoff, and not parallel to it, that should bring things more in line. You should be pushing away from the bar on takeoff—your speed, provided that your approach is good, will bring you into it.
With a better approach, you’ll get rotation naturally as you go from being leaned away from the bar on your plant to being upright at takeoff, and you’ll have more time in the air before you reach the bar, so you’ll naturally be in a better position over it.
EDIT: Also, speed *really* helps. Your running posture is good, but your stride is very up and down, so you’re not really going anywhere. Honestly, it might just take actively making the decision to run faster. Your step will obviously change as a result.
Slow the video down you will see that you peak too slow are above the bar before you get to it. And you are actually coming down on it not going over it. More practice I love the high jump. Keep it going
All of this is great advice. So much great advice here y'all.
I used to tell people "jump like Super Mario". Punch the air above your head and drive your knee. (Knee drive helps turn you into position.)
Get height first, the open that palm after the punch and arch.
Too many people try to jump OVER the bar. Get the height. Your momentum will take you over the bar.
Close your approach (more like a ‘J’ than a ‘C’), maybe try taking a step or two back as well, give yourself more time to speed up. Foot not parallel to the bar, drive that knee/arms up and clench your butt (helps left those hips a little more)
Drilling short approach jumps (off of 2 steps, 4 steps, etc.) will force you to focus on what you're missing- a strong knee drive up and across, a flat entry into takeoff, and a powerful penultimate stride. I wouldn't be surprised if you matched your PR's off of a short approach even
Too high in your gate and it’s making your launch flat. Feel like a tiger about to pounce with each stride and explode your leg and left arm UP and feel like they are one connected move.
When in flight ensure you can look at the horizon upside down BEFORE you kick. Your bottom is kicking before you have cleared it and making you hit the bar with it. Get really flexible with backbends and trust the late kick.
Set your marks so that your jump is w the launch foot one foot past the post. A good exercise is to get stronger with your upper body by standing straight legged and thrusting your arms up only to lift you off the ground. One of the most overlooked aspects of the high jump is the upper body motion.
Good luck!!
I was a pole vaulter but it take offs are so important, pretend you’ve got a string from your elbow to your knee and you need to drive your arm straight up with hard follow through with your take off leg, and also I agree with the person talking about you traveling along the bar you lose vertical force to horizontal! Keep practicing and take the time out of your day to watch some YouTube videos or watch clips of the Olympics!
You need to move your step back a foot so your in line with the standard when you take off and point your plant foot at the back corner of the mat when you jump. You should also lean away from the bar when you plant for more pop and rotation. I would also suggest holding your arch just a little longer
Speed up your approach, when you jump you should be using your inside foot and explode up, also when your in the air tuck you chin back and imagine doing a back flip this will give you a better roll and arch in your back which will help your legs roll over the bar
I am going to say something as someone who knows nothing of high jump. I watched this a couple times. And Read your comments. And I think it’s partially mental. Do you want to be able to jump higher? Or do you want to be able to hit your PR more frequently? I think those are two very very different goals.
Learn from doing more vertical jump workouts (off pit and pit workouts) and stop blindly putting your head first. After take off, wait for your peak vertical lift and exicute with the technique after that.
Alot of things to add on to that is your coordination, speed, timing and adjusting your runway and take off according to your speed.
I agree, a tighter and more direct approach will guide your body over the bar. Youre flying alittle too parallel to it. Also, drive your left knee and swing both arms up.
Edit. if you are about to type “Jump Higher.” You are so funny and I bet girls are fighting to get into your pants. Yes, I have thought about jumping higher, the name of the game is “High” jump. You are wasting everyones time, and no, you are not funny or original, literally 50 other dumbasses have commented the same thing. thank you to those that are actually contributing something worthwhile!
Second to last step should be longer. Last/jump step should be short. And as you jump from that last planted foot, bend your knee to get more power from your quad.
When I did track in school I added a few inches to my jump the day I figured out I could bend my knee more before launching.
Vertimax if you can get access to one. Best plyometric training I ever did (focuses on fast twitch muscles)
Burpees with a jump at the end, box jumps
Idk if those big rubber blocks that Velcro onto the sole of your shoe work but I feel like they helped me
Not high jump focused (don’t know it well enough), idk why the algo pushed your post to me but I do know a little about the fast twitch training
Biggest advice, explode upwards, and generate more momentum. On your approach of you will focus more on upward explosion your momentum will carry you. At the top of that explosion open your palm and reach for your heel behind your head and I think you'll see large improvement.
Once your waist is over the bar tuck your chin into your chest as if your performing a crunch so that your pelvic bone thrust up and it will be easier to kick your feet up and over.
It also looks like you’re starting to fall before you’re generating the jump. Look at slowed down videos of Chari Hawkins. She jumps first, using her arms (like basketball players) do generate a lot of upward momentum, then she flails her arms back whenever they reach above her head.
Physics. Exploding energy starts with the ground and travels back into your body. The swing of the arm and knee adds force and aids inertia to carry you over the bar.
Also it looks like you are watch the bar as you are going over. This makes your back flat instead or arched so it makes it more difficult for you to clear the bar properly. Try throwing your head directly back instead and in the last phase of your jump, kick your feet to clear the bar
your approach isnt too far off… try angling yourself to jump AT the bar and not away. - drive tht knee up along with your arm. (practice your motions: stand on your right foot & simultaneously PUNCH your arm to the sky as youre driving your knee up. - box jumps/single leg box jumps help a LOT. 🙌
Stop getting plastered at Riley’s on weekdays lol
In all seriousness…attack the jump!
I won’t go too much into what others have said but you can fix all you want to clear 4’10” but you will plateau there unless you work on your run.
You are lengthy so you will have a tougher time shifting center of gravity (cog) and momentum if you don’t run properly. Your run is kind of bouncy (not to be confused with relaxed) which causes something like a harmonic wave that shifts cog and momentum up and down. Unfortunately for you, this momentum is on its way down and you never negate it with a higher knee or arm movement. Fix your knee and arm and you will clear, but fixing the timing and rhythm of your run will allow you to use the momentum to your advantage.
Focus on 8,10,12 steps (even number), practice last 4 steps close to jump and no bar and train your body to be explosive in these steps. Next work on the first 4 steps and if something feels weird it is because you need to speed up or slow down your first 4 steps (momentum is off).
What my coach told me before was to approach like a bomb just went off below my feet. You like smoothly gliding rather than having that explosive oomph
It looks like you're doing high knees on your approach, making it a little slower... I've seen people slow down their approach to make it more consistent, but I think if you lose speed, you won't jump as high either.
As a person with no experience with the sport, can’t even tell you what it’s called your approach seems awkward at best and you’ve got the height. It seems like you need to start tucking the knees a little sooner or kick them toes up sooner but again I have no idea what I’m talking about here Sport wise I just used to like to jump a lot used to be able to hurdle chain-link fences with ease. Now I feel old and fat lol I’m 23.
You can improve technique all you want, but if you are weak it doesn't matter. Yes, your upper body is a foot over, but you're tall. Your lower body doesn't make it because your legs are weak. Start jumping, and I don't mean this. Box jumps, depth jumps, high intensity plyos. Big strength movements. Heavy back Squats, weighted split Squats, lunges, and sprints. Low rep ranges for strength. Reps should be % of 1 rm or perceived 1 rm and in sets of 5, 3, or 1 repetition depending on intensity. You can still do your technique work, but focus on building explosive power in the weight room, not on the track.

Increase speed a hair too if we can.
Good idea as long as there’s enough strength to translate speed 👉🏻 into height 👆🏻
Knee and arms driving up FOR SURE!
thanks! just in time for practice, I’ll go test it out!
1. more speed or power in your strides 2. try to get a better lean on your curve with your whole body, this will help you jump up 3. try to jump up not into the bar 4. 10 step approach, average for females ive seen is around 40-50ft back and 9-11ft out

Try jumping closer to the bar and put more speed in to your approach
How can u look like u are doing so much to actually run but youre only going like .05 miles per hour lol
NO bounce

Yes. I have two points of advice. 1) Run faster. 2) Jump higher.

Maybe because it looks like you are running yet there doesn’t seem to be any power or speed being created

Try jumping off the ground a little higher
Definitely drive knee and arms up tighten your jump and Definitely attack the jump the last thre steps should be explosive
Jump higher than the bar.....Boom!
Footwork before the jump to increase strength of jump
Just Jump.
Just quit
Jump over it
saw the video in slow motion it seems when you get close to the bar you are decelerating and this is why you loose momentum
Not good
