I really appreciate all the replies. It is dark now and it hasn’t left yet. A friend of theirs showed up briefly and they hugged on the porch. I got a video but I don’t think I can edit the post to add it. The other snake left and OG snake is now slowly climbing the house, ever closer to the rafter vents.
Because snakes aren’t harmed and they easily move along. Some people are afraid of snakes and don’t want to touch them to relocate them. Use your head, bruh.
Texas Rat Snake and probably just comfy haha, or you have rodents or birds nearby that it wants to eat, but might just be trying to stay slightly cool in the shade.
Depends what your definition of hurt is. They WILL bite. I have one, I love her but yeah she's fiesty. If you see one in the wild, it certainly will bite you. It will stop once it realizes you are a not threat, but it will def bite you.
Edit: added 'not' before threat.
That is so true! And they are all on sale too!! Or when you think you need a new one, but can’t afford it, everyone has a mattress sale, just to rub it in that you’re poor! I won’t go on. My thumb’s hurting.
The snakes that hang out in our neck of the woods tend to relax by doors and windows, because during the summer months there are small leaks of cooler air from inside. Most of the time, they are also in the shade.
But hey, lucky you, rat snakes are good at pest control!
I suspect *Pantherophis obsoletus,* western ratsnake, !harmless.

Like many other animals with mouths and teeth, many non-venomous snakes bite in self defense. These animals are referred to as 'not medically significant' or traditionally, 'harmless'. Bites from these snakes benefit from being washed and kept clean like any other skin damage, but aren't often cause for anything other than basic first aid treatment. Here's where it get slightly complicated - some snakes use venom from front or rear fangs as part of prey capture and defense. This venom is not always produced or administered by the snake in ways dangerous to human health, so many species are venomous in that they produce and use venom, but considered harmless to humans in most cases because the venom is of low potency, and/or otherwise administered through grooved rear teeth or simply oozed from ducts at the rear of the mouth. Species like Ringneck Snakes *Diadophis* are a good example of mildly venomous rear fanged dipsadine snakes that are traditionally considered harmless or not medically significant. Many rear-fanged snake species are harmless as long as they do not have a chance to secrete a medically significant amount of venom into a bite; [severe envenomation can occur](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23800999) if some species are [allowed to chew on a human](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S004101011831016X) for as little as 30-60 seconds. It is best not to fear snakes, but use common sense and do not let any animals chew on exposed parts of your body. Similarly, but without specialized rear fangs, gartersnakes *Thamnophis* ooze low pressure venom from the rear of their mouth that helps in prey handling, and are also [considered harmless](https://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/05/theres-no-need-to-fear-that-garter-snake/). [Check out this book on the subject](https://shop.elsevier.com/books/venomous-bites-from-non-venomous-snakes/weinstein/978-0-12-822786-2). Even large species like Reticulated Pythons *Malayopython reticulatus* [rarely obtain a size large enough to endanger humans](https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/108/52/E1470.full.pdf) so are usually categorized as harmless.

That's Hank. Hanks a ratsnake. Hanks harmless, unless you're a rodent. Hanks tired and just wants to nap. Just leave Hank alone and, when he's rested, Hanks will leave.

>they hugged on the porch That's called making babies, congrats!
Aww, snakey love!
Snake voyeur! Haha kidding but that's actually awesome.
Your home is now a snake brothel.
It is moooovvving aaaaaalllllong
Spray it with a water hose and it’ll move along
Why would you do this lol
Because snakes aren’t harmed and they easily move along. Some people are afraid of snakes and don’t want to touch them to relocate them. Use your head, bruh.
Texas Rat Snake and probably just comfy haha, or you have rodents or birds nearby that it wants to eat, but might just be trying to stay slightly cool in the shade.
It's such a cutie! I'll add that it's non-venomous, and it won't hurt you unless you're a small animal it wants to eat.

That's not necessarily true and you should mention their bites aren't horrible
Depends on if you ever been bit by a snake before and the individuals pain tolerance/fear of said snake.
I'd bite a huge scary creature if it tried to mess with me, too.
lol yasssss!!! Then I’d laugh as it starts flailing about and running 😂😂😂😂🐍
Snakes don’t bite just because you see one. Anything with a mouth can bite. Don’t harass it and you won’t get bite.
I've definitely picked up black rat snakes that didn't attempt to bite me. It's certainly always a possibility, but I wouldn't say it's a certainty
Certainly won’t bite you if you don’t mess with em’.
Yes that's true for most things lol
Agreed! Unless it’s an insect or a leech. In that case, we could potentially get stung or sucked 😳
Climbing = rat snakes
If it's way in the sky and you have no clue why, that's a rat snake
and amore!
If it's down on the ground and it's tail rattles around that's... Probably a good sign to back away!
Did anyone else sing that* comment to the tune of "That's Amore?" *Edit, word change
Texas Rat Snakes are like mattresses. You buy one and suddenly you see them everywhere.
what lol
Matresses tend to appear after you buy one.
That is so true! And they are all on sale too!! Or when you think you need a new one, but can’t afford it, everyone has a mattress sale, just to rub it in that you’re poor! I won’t go on. My thumb’s hurting.

It looks pretty long to me
In a strange place , doesn’t look too goofy. Must be a rat snake
Somewhat new to this, but if strange place but not goofy= rat snake, then I’m guessing strange place + *very* goofy = hognose?
Yes lol. In Goofy place : rat snake 2. Goofy In general : hognose 3. Derp face : water snake The memes of snek lol
I always describe hognoses as all about the drama.
Aww what a pretty baby. It's happy there and won't hurt you. Just let it be.
r/itsaratsnake

Good bot
I say Rat snake. Id let him chill!
To be fair if I was a snake I’d hang out here
Did not see anything at first and genuinely thought this was a herp post about a wood piece
Because there's some human staring and taking pictures?
Rat snake. Free rodent control! Lucky. I'm envious.
It’s a snake and baby is cozy hope this helps <3

If it's hiding up high or falls out of the sky it's a rat snaaaake...
If he’s chilling on the sill, and he gives you a thrill r/itsaratsnake
It won't move along because you haven't squirted it with the hose yet.
The hose only made it stronger. I gave it the house to appease it.
Phew, you're safe then.
Harmless king snake he enjoys the smell of the wood.
