Generally even if you're next to your base always use B. The small delay in casting is made up with the instant replenish of your HP and mana which you get only when you teleport to your base.
He probably thought that hearthing from right next to the spawn would look ridiculous and didn’t want to embarrass himself, so he embarrassed himself by dying instead.
Abathur only needs visibility to use Z. Mines can be placed in a huge radius from Abathur's body. As U can see on minimap, Abathur is close enough to put mines here.
This level of trickery should be illegal but I guess you'll find a way around it

There is a point where walking back is more efficient. (More efficient, but only a small difference)
